2017 Bowl Watch

Did a quick spreadsheet but it won't translate copy/paste wise.  We should know a lot more after this weekend but as of today:

39 eligible teams (50% of 78 Bowl berths)

76 teams could become eligible

15 have been eliminated from contention (barring the need to take a 5-7 team)

That being the case, I don't think the tweet from Camara indicates any behind the scenes information as to which bowl the Zips may get invited.

Rather, I think it's the case, as @kreed5120 mentioned, that they're planning for all contingencies.

Correct.  Like I said.  I think we learned a lot from going through this 2 years ago.

Bahamas just happens to be in the pool of possibilities once again.

Last night Ball State moved over to the elimination category.  No new teams became eligible.  The quote above has been edited to reflect that.

Tonight, FAU could become the 40th bowl-eligible team with a win at home over Marshall.  No teams have the possibility of being eliminated.

11/3 teams that could gain eligibility:

Texas A&M (vs Auburn)

WKU (@Vanderbilt)

Houston (vs ECU)

Virginia (vs GA Tech)

App State (@Louisiana Monroe)

UAB (vs Rice)

Wake (@Notre Dame)

Iowa (vs Ohio State)

WVU (vs Iowa State)

 North Texas (vs LA Tech)

Northwestern (@ Nebraska)

Wyoming (vs Colorado State)

UTSA (@ FIU)

FIU (vs UTSA)

Southern Miss (@ Tennessee)

Colorado (@ AZ State)

Oregon (@ Washington)

Fresno State (vs BYU)

11/3 Teams that could take a 7th loss:

Umass (@Miss State)

Illinois (@ Purdue)

ECU (@ Houston)

Texas State (vs New Mexico St)

ODU (vs Charlotte)

Cinci (@Tulane)

At the end of Saturday we could have as many as 67 Bowl-eligible teams.  It sure is fun to watch the dominoes fall this time of year.  Hopefully we'll flip over to that group on Tuesday.

So ideally we are looking at 6-7 MAC bowl eligible teams. (Akron, Toledo, NIU, WMU, OU, and CMU as essential guarantees). Only one of Miami/EMU can win out as they face each other. Buffalo plays BGSU, Ball St, and OU, so it is possible for them as well.

Updated through Saturday 11/4:

50 eligible teams (64% of 78 Bowl berths)

60 teams could become eligible.  There are 12 teams sitting at 6 losses.

20 have been eliminated from contention (barring the need to take a 5-7 team)

Umass, Illinois, ECU and Texas State all took 7th losses Saturday.

In mid-week games:

ZIPS could become eligible

WMU could become eligible

CMU could become eligible

Appalachian State could become eligible

Miami OH could be eliminated

Buffalo could be eliminated

EMU could be eliminated

Cincinnati could be eliminated

59 eligible

25 eliminated

46 possible eligible for 19 remaining spots.

19 teams are sitting with the zips at 5 wins.  It seems possible that 6-6 could get left out this year.

Hopefully after tonight we won't have to worry about talking "if".  Go Zips!

I'm just so worried about going 5-7 for the umpteenth time under TB. I counted my chickens last year before they hatched and we lost 4 straight and went from 5-3 to 5-7. Only bright side is if it happens is that I won't have any issue with him being fired.

6-6 is sort of a toss up to me. Would prob be fine with whatever direction Larry W. wants to go.

7-5, and MAC champ birth and he keeps his job/few year extension, no more than 3.

I think 5-7 is questionable and 6-6 moves him to the hot seat. I agree that the record is not what you would like to see but it seems rather short sighted to let him go, now, as we have been increasingly improving recruiting classes and next year's class looks legit, especially when we would have likely beat Miami with woods in at the helm.

Personally, I felt the air gushing out of the tires last week when I heard about Tommy and then minutes later we lost Sands. I am not getting my hopes up that we will see Tommy and would like to be pleasantly surprised if we do.

5-7 should be a one-way ticket out of Akron.

I think you're right, because that would mean we just lost at home to Kent, and lost 3 in a row to end the season.  It would be impossible for Terry to frame that as "we're moving in the right direction".

I think that would be enough for the new regime to justify moving in another direction.

But I think he stays at 6-6 with a bowl win.

If the Zips go 6-6 there's no way Terry gets fired.  Sorry folks.  Bowl game, win or loss.  2-bowl games in 6 years is enough to guarantee coming back, especially when your previous bowl total was one game...in 10 years...scratch that, 20ish years since joining D-1 football?

I'm not saying that as a Bowden Cheerleader...I'm saying that as the reality of our circumstance unfortunately.  Akron football has been that bad, for that long.

You're right that's what the outcome would almost certainly be. I just won't be happy with it. Hopefully we win the next 2 games and its a non-issue.

I agree.

I'm thinking we lose tonight... decisively.

We then beat K.ent to become bowl eligible... making us the single weakest bowl-eligible team in the nation.

We'll then proceed to lose the bowl game... but Terry & Co. keep their jobs.

I'm cool with it as long as all of our current verbal commitments sign.  Last year's class was strong as well.  So...

Keep bringing in the Jimmie's & Joe's.

Indeed.  Winning the next two games would mean 2-post season games.

Totally agree with this.  When Sands got hurt I put my palm to my face and said "are we really THIS snake bitten!?"  Because it literally feels like every single time we have a chance at something special...SOMETHING happens to derail it.

Beating some 6-6 G5 team in the (insert sell out sponsor name) bowl is irrelevant to me. I expected more than a 6-6 or 7-6 team in year 6 of Bowden's tenure. Like I said hopefully we jump on OU early tonight (as I feel that's our only hope) then beat Kent next week to clinch our division. I'd be happy with a trip to Detroit even if we lose by 3 touchdowns to Toledo. It would be a sign of progress.
