It's damn good to be on this list again.

IMO the same thing would happen with MAC football if it played half of its games against football superpowers. Instead of 1 or 2 football games against ranked teams, imagine 4 or 5...

Deep thoughts by Spin.

Nothing unusual here about MAC football. Pick any MAC sport (men's or women's) and have all of their OOC games played against that sports superpowers and one would expect similar results. However, examination of the SOS in my last post demonstrates that the pathetic W/L record and RPIs of Ohio college baseball teams (from 6 different conferences) is not the result of them loading their schedules with college baseball superstars.

Almost 50% of MAC baseball teams have a winning record in conference. As expected.

Yes Ohio baseball teams are at a disadvantage in overall win/loss records. But how is that different from football where we play B10 and other FBS powers every year, often National Championship contenders? We are on a different level than them, but we play them to pay the bills. In baseball we play the championship contenders for half a season because it's not snowing there.

In football a winning MAC record and a MACC win or bowl game trip is the goal. Some hold baseball to a different level.

SPIN, You are very confused. Ohio teams play teams south of the Mason Dixon line because it's warmer there and very few of the games are against championship contenders. Take a look at the following OOC RPI numbers to see how good MAC teams are at lining up OOC games against really rotten teams.

Newsflash. The teams in the bottom half of the conference standings have worse records than the top half. And don't draw as many quality opponents. And MAC teams as a whole are not as good as teams in the south. Then there's "Spuds" who we hired to build the program and didn't. We know. We know.

It's a good thing we don't hold football (2-10) to the same standards.

The teams in the top half of the conference standings have better records than the bottom half.) And don't draw as many quality opponents. (Wait a minute, I thought MAC baseball teams play championship contenders for half a season - because it's not snowing there.) And MAC teams as a whole are not as good as teams in the south. (it's impossible to swing a dead cat south of the Mason Dixon line and not hit a simply awful hardball squad.)Then there's "Spuds" who we hired to build the program and didn't. We know. We know.

It's a good thing we don't hold football (2-10) to the same standards. (To what standards do you think the Zip's baseball team is being held?)

You post W/L records of Ohio baseball teams when you know it’s not a level playing field. You ignore the fact Zips baseball had an absentee head coach 7 months of the year.

The two MAC sports are more alike than you want to admit. The MAC will never have a team in the College World Series, or a football team in the College Football National Championship. We all know that. Only you expect baseball to play on the same level as Wake Forest and LSU.

You provide an excellent answer to several question that I did not ask.

I must admit that I did not realize there had to be a level playing field to post what I thought was some interesting info about the performance of Ohio college baseball teams.

I also did not realize that the Zips having an absentee head coach would have a significant depressing effect on all Ohio college baseball teams.

I did not know that I didn't want to admit that MAC football and baseball have similarities; but I am willing to do so (hell's fire, both sports have the word "ball" in their title).

Kent State made it to the College World Series in 2012; if it happened once, it can happen again.

I did not realize that I expected MAC baseball teams to play on the same level as Wake Forest and LSU (how in the world did you come up with that based on my previous posts?).

To refresh your memory, the question that I asked but you failed to answer was:

To what standards do you think the Zip's baseball team is being held?

Being competitive in the MAC, make and do well in the MAC tournament, and not embarrass the university like the Spuds did.

Im personally looking at 2024 or 2025.

Your expectations for the baseballers seems reasonable (although it was a lot like pulling teeth to get you to reveal them).

You have expressed the opinion (multiple times) that the expectations for the football  and baseballs teams are not the same. Do you have any information you can share about who (hopefully someone in a position of authority) holds these different expectations and more details on exactly what the differences are?

I don't always put words together properly. My English teachers loved me. Not.

Actually IMO the expectations of baseball and football are very similar. Mid-majors neither have the budgets/conference/legacy to contend for hot prospects or national championships, and both sports have a large number of starters/players. And we have crap weather for a big chunk of both seasons, which also makes recruiting and attendance a challenge. Then add the programs have been historically bad (and baseball got the boot).

I think it's fair to say this season marks the first real signs of improvement since the program returned. Overall and conference winning percentages by year shows the improvement compared to stagnation in previous years:

2020: .077 (n/a)

2021: .294 (.200)

2022: .268 (.275)

2023: .365 (.370)

And this year's schedule featured fewer non-D1 opponents that allowed us to boost the overall winning percentage in recent years.

The weekend schedule for the last series is today at 3pm, Friday at 3pm, and Saturday at 2pm at Skeels Field against the Bobkitties. (there's no Sunday game). We're one win from the 20 win mark for the first time since coming back. As Indians said, this season is a big improvement already.

I have not seen anything on ESPN about streaming. I hope to get out to the ballpark, but we're moving so...

The Zips took a 7-2 lead into the 9th, and gave up 4 runs to squeak out the win.

Akron wins #20 and Ohio is knocked out of the MAC tournament.

And if a closer isn’t at the top of the scouting list, it needs to be.

2 games left, we’ll see if the Kitties mail it in from here. Wouldn’t break my heart.

I like Michael Bevin as a writer, and he does a fine job covering soccer and track and field, and this was a nice article.  But it sure would have been nice if the ABJ didn't wait until the last home series to write something like this....better something than nothing, I guess.
