The future of televised basketball and football games

With the Bally’s networks in bankruptcy (and rumored to be closing down soon at the hands of MLB), what does this mean to TV football and basketball games on TV?

Will the games be available via streaming, like the other sports are?

I haven’t heard any rumors yet, was wondering what others have heard.

IIRC the Zips football and basketball have had games broadcast on Ballys Cleveland. Maybe I’m thinking of past seasons.

Way back when, the MAC used to broadcast quite a few games on Fox Sports Ohio/SportsTime Ohio. The MAC tournament used to be played there, Akron/Kent games, MAC football games, etc. Off the top of my head, I can't remember when that ended. Probably around the time that ESPN gave all MAC schools the ability to broadcast their own games.

I watch the Zips basketball and football TV shows when they're uploaded to YouTube, but I'm pretty sure those are still broadcasted on Bally.

I'm not very familiar with Bally.  Did they buy out the FoxSports regional networks?  That's where I used to view the John Groce Show -- as recent as two (maybe one) year(s) ago.

Yeah Ballys pretty much took over the Fox networks. They still have the football and men's basketball coaches shows, for however long they'll exist.

What I've heard is MLB is getting rid of the regional sports networks so they can put the MLB games on streaming. What that will cost I don't know. That would leave the Cavaliers and Bluejackets without an outlet. The Crew switched to streaming on Apple TV. So if you still gave a crap about the team you pay for Apple TV and then pay for the MLS pass. Yeah that's a NO for me. These entities will continue to charge more and more until its not worth it anymore. Nothing good can come out of all this for the consumer.

So much good is going to come out of it. Blackout restrictions will be gone soon and you'll be able to buy your team's games straight from MLB or NHL, or NBA.

Understood. It remains to be seen if the cost will be higher when you pay multiple sources instead of one. We've already decided against the Crew package. If that continues we'll have more decisions to make.

I love Zips Weekly on Bally Sports Great Lakes and hope it has a home by next fall.

Thanks to Bud Wentz and the other sponsors - Zips Football, Basketball and UA receive great exposure in a chunk of the Midwest.  It is my understanding that Zips Weekly is actually an infomercial paid for by the sponsors.

Me too. I have my DVR set to record both series. Each time they’re on, in case a game runs over or there’s a program change.

This past week Walsh Jesuit HS baseball played the top ranked team from Michigan & the game was broadcast for free on YouTube. The production was fantastic w/ 3-4 different camera angles & competent announcers. It was produced by a Michigan company (the announcers were slight homers for the Michigan team but nothing egregious).  It was free.  It was high school.  I watched it on my 64" smart tv w/out a hitch.  With stuff like this Idk how much longer ESPN is going to be relevant... or even a viable business model at all.  Looks like sports production is really beginning to filter down to grass roots.

Pat McAfee is a gazillionaire now because of YouTube. I'm not sure how much revenue he generated from YouTube specifically, but providing a free show that everyone with internet can access has attracted such a crowd that his sponsor deals have been in the $100M+ range.

The MAC has the 2nd largest non P5 TV deal that ends after the 2026-27 season. I do wonder how lucrative that deal is, being paywalled behind cable/streaming/ESPN+ subscriptions, vs a deal or independent movement to go to YouTube.

Hell, all ESPN+ is anyways is a platform where the University's broadcast can be seen. I don't know if the TV deals include equipment or funding for equipment, but it's an interesting avenue that could be explored.
