Big East update

Recommended Posts

You know as much as last year was disappointing, it's pretty amazing that the Zips have only lost one conference game in the almost two years they have been in the conference and that team is coming in on Wednesday (or two losses if you count last year's conference tournament).

with 3 games left to play,  (maximum of 9 points can be earned)

the zips have 15 points

they have 8 point lead over

Creighton 2-2-1......7 points

Marquette 2-2-1  ....7 points

Akron plays those 2 teams in their next 2 Big East matchups

Creighton plays Marquette in the last Big East game of the year

https://www.bigeast.com/standings.aspx?path=msoc

Wednesday night Oct. 23 matchups

Marquette at DePaul                   3 pm

Georgetown at Villanova            3 pm

St. Johns at Seton Hall               7 pm

Xavier at Butler                           7 pm

Providence at UConn                7 pm

Creighton at Akron                   7 pm

One wednesday afternoon result was absolutely shocking to me

Georgetown, 4-1-0 ...in the league played Villanova   0-5-0

the 2 teams played to a 3-3 tie

this tie against a winless Big East team dropped Georgetown down to #10 in RPI

UConn and St. Johns can both tie Georgetown at 4-1-1 if UConn and St. John's can get wins tonight

Marquette played at DePaul this afternoon

the 2 teams played to a 2-2 tie

Marquette now has 8 points as a result of their 2-2-2 record

DePaul is now 1-3-2

Go, Zips.....The zips can win the Midwest division with a win tonight

in all honesty, they would also win the division with a tie....

as of 5:37 this afternoon, the zips are #32 in RPI

The zips need to get the full 3 points tonight.

Creighton is #48 in RPI...they are the highest ranked RPI team on Akron's remaining schedule.

The zips must get a win tonight......to further improve their RPI.

Seton Hall at Xavier                   7 pm

Akron at Marquette                   8 pm...........................game will be on FloFC

Saturday afternoon games

Providence   1   Villanova   0

Providence moves up to 14 points with a 4-1-2 record

Providence finishes their year on Nov. 2 with a home game against Xavier

Villanova drops to 0-6-1...and is eliminated from being one of the final 8

UConn and St. Johns played to a 1-1 tie

UConn now has 11 points...with a record of 3-2-2

St. John's now has 14 points with a record of 4-1-2

St. Johns can now only possibly reach 17 points.....so they can not beat Akron (already 18 points) for the #1 seed in the conference tournament

Georgetown mauled DePaul  4-0

DePaul has 5 points with a record of 1-4-2...their Big East tournament hopes are on life support

DePaul's last game is at Butler

Georgetown moves into sole possession of first place in the East Division with a 5-1-1 record (16 points)

if they win their last regular season game (not an easy game....Saturday Nov. 2nd at St. Johns), they would finish with 19 points

Georgetown is the only team....that has a very, very long shot of being the top seed in the conference tournament (Georgetown would need to win its last game and have Akron lose its last 2 games).    That is not going to happen...as the Zips will win tonight against Marquette.

Akron has 18 points after playing only 6 games.

A win tonight at Marquette would give Akron 21 points and would give them the top seed in the conference tournament.

in the 4 pm conference game,  Creighton currently leads Butler  3-1 ...19 minutes left in the game

A win would push Creighton to 10 points with a 3-3-1 record

Creighton plays at Marquette next Saturday

A Creighton win today and next week...would probably bump them up to a 6 seed in the conference tourney

Seton Hall defeated Xavier 1-0

Xavier would need a miracle to get into the tourney

current standings

Akron                                    21

2. Georgetown                         16

3T. Providence                           14

3T. St. Johns                              14

5. UConn                                  11

6T. Creighton                             10

6T. Seton Hall                             10

8th. Marquette                      8

current also rans

DePaul and Xavier have 5 points......

Butler at 3 and Villanova at 1...have been eliminated

all 6 games next saturday start at 2 eastern

Georgetown at st. Johns

Xavier at Providence

Villanova at Seton Hall

DePaul at Butler

Creighton at Marquette

Akron at UConn

if Creighton and Marquette, Marquette would finish as the 8 seed and play at Akron on November 9

I would expect Seton Hall to beat Villanova

If Marquette were to beat Creighton next Saturday (and Seton Hall wins or ties), Creighton would drop to 8 seed and come to Akron on the 9th

I will let someone smarter than me.....figure out what happens if Marquette, DePaul and Xavier tie for 8th with 8 points

I hope that Georgetown wins or ties next Saturday....I would like them to be the 2 or 3 seed and be on the opposite side of the draw from the zips

So I did a little analysis on who the Zips opponent will be in the first round of the tournament. The Big East uses points and then the best result against common opponents starting with the highest seed.

The current standings:

1. Akron 21 points (clinched top seed)
2. Georgetown 16 points
3. Providence  14 points (by virtue of beating UConn and tied St John's)
4. St John's 14 pts (tied UConn)
5. UConn 11 points
6. Creighton 10 points (tied Providence)
7. Seton Hall 10 points (lost to Providence)
8. Marquette 8 points

Outside looking in
Xavier, DePaul 5 points

Eliminated:
Butler 3 points, Villanova 1 point.

So not trying to figure out all of the permutations of all the seeds, but trying to figure out who the 8 seed will be. It cannot be any of 2-4, they have too many points.

It cannot be UConn because if Marquette wins, that would knock Creighton (whom they play) below UConn in the standings.

If Marquette ties Creighton they are the 8 seed.

If Marquette beats Creighton and Seton Hall wins or ties, Creighton is the 8 seed.

If Marquette beats Creighton and Seton Hall loses, Seton Hall is the 8 seed because they lost to Providence while Creighton tied them.

If DePaul wins (they have Butler) and Marquette and Xavier lose, DePaul gets the 8 seed because their best result is a win over Creighton.

If Xavier beats Providence and Marquette loses, Xavier is the 8 seed, no matter what DePaul does (Xavier will have the best result amongst the highest seeded team).

So there are still five teams possible for the eight seed, so now you know your rooting interest. Personally, I'm rooting for DePaul, Creighton and Providence. ☺️

DePaul leads Butler 4-0 at half time....

so , they stand very good chance of getting 8 seed

DePaul is rooting for Providence win or Tie and Marquette loss

Creighton leads Marquette 2-0 at half time

Xavier and Providence 0-0 at half time

Xavier needs a win and Marquette loss to get 8 seed

Seton Hall leads Villanova 1-0 at half time

Georgetown and St. Johns 0-0 at half ftime

akron will host DePaul    next Saturday

(using MD Zip analysis)

DePaul   5     Butler   3

Creighton   5  Marquette 2

both Marquette and DePaul finish with 8 points

   MD Zip analysis

If DePaul wins (they have Butler) and Marquette and Xavier lose, DePaul gets the 8 seed because their best result is a win over Creighton.

Xavier loses 1-0 to Providence

St. John's gets 2 seed with 2-0 win over Georgetown

Zips still have work to do to lock up ncaaa spot.

agree completely with you

they must get a win in the quarterfinals

while today's game was being played, Akron was 26 in RPI

after the tie, Akron is showing at 29 in RPI (RPI as of 4:25)

DePaul is 93 in RPI

Marquette is 113

Georgetown is currently 12

Zips must get a home win.......on Saturday November 9

losses to IU_indy (currently 146 in RPI) and Temple (currently 111 in RPI)...are really hurting the zips

Don't like that Georgetown dropped to number four. Partly because I think they're the second best team in the conference, but even more so the semifinals will be held about 40 minutes from their campus.

I wish the regular season were like this too. No OT rewards teams for parking the bus and allows underdog teams to play not to lose. If OT were implemented for the regular season, I think we would have a few more W's on our resume.

I respectfully disagree. The extra minutes are a lot of wear and tear on our players in a compressed season. We'd likely see more injuries.
