Player to Watch: Emil Jaaskelainen, Akron

He is far from a secret, but what Jaaskelainen is doing this season deserves an isolated look. The graduate senior leads the country with 20 goals, six more than anyone else. Add the seven assists, and Jaaskelainen leads with 47 points, 14 more than the closest competitor. The British forward has been the best striker in college soccer while also peaking at the perfect time, with 17 of those goals coming in the last nine matches for the Big East regular season champions. Identified as a preseason transfer to watch, adding the two-time NEC Player of the Year from Long Island has clearly been a success for the Akron Zips. It must be the tips he learned from his father, Jussi Jaaskelainen, an English Premier League goalkeeping legend who played more than 800 matches.

Jaaskelainen’s Legendary Record

While Hughes chases the 50-goal club, Akron striker Emil Jaaskelainen recently became the highest-scoring NCAA DI player of the 21st century. His 63 career goals top the 62 Alon Lubezky managed for Harvard from 2001 to 2004.

It is important to note that 43 goals came while Jaaskelainen was at LIU from 2020 to 2023, receiving NEC Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year twice in his legendary tenure. The son of Jussi Jaaskelainen, an English Premier League goalkeeping icon, Emil has carved out his own lasting legacy.

The top 15 semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy should be announced very soon

Hermann Trophy Selection process

Mid November – The semifinalists (top 15 men and top 15 women) are announced. The voting of Division I coaches begins.

Mid December – Top three women’s finalists announced at NCAA Women’s College Cup; Top three men’s finalists announced at NCAA Men’s College Cup.

Early January - The men’s and women’s winners are announced at press conference and honored at MAC Awards Banquet.

Emil currently has 6 goals more than the nation's 2nd highest scorer

Will probably need a decent NCAA run for him to get the Hermann.

Since 2009, only two winners were not on College Cup teams. The two were on teams in the final 8.

Ten times since 2009, the nation’s leading goal scorer did not win the Hermann trophy.

The longer the team plays, the better the chance of Hermann success.

That same link also shows that we are the #6 highest scoring offense in the country. Pretty amazing considering how poorly the season started.

Also, Georgetown and UConn are top rated defenses. We broke through and drew blood to defeat one but not the other. It will be interesting how the balance of offensive strength versus defensive strength plays out in a rematch with Georgetown.

@NYC ZIP ...so impressed by the stats that you mention in bold above....

I would have no clue....where to find great info....like that.......

since I am retired, I did a brute force exercise (going to teams individual web sites !!!) this afternoon

I could not find an NCAA site that showed current leaders in Points

We all know that Emil is much more than just a scorer.....

He is very unselfish and makes great passes

Emil always knows where he is on the field ...and is known for making one touch passes to open teammates

Emil  has 22 goals and 7 assists...51 points

Alex Harris from Cornell is #2 in goals....he has 16 goals and 5 assists....37 points

Missouri State is currently #7 in RPI....

you will see below....that I will list points leaders for the top 8 RPI teams in the nation

Jesus Barea of Missouri State is currently #3 in goals

he has 15 goals and 3 assists...33 points

You saw on the stat links that Owen Smith of Western Michigan leads the nation in assists with 15 assists

Owen Smith has 4 goals....so he currently has 23 points

WMU regular season is over

NYCZIP shows above that players that make it to the college cup....are much more likely to win the Hermann Trophy

Therefore, I decided to look at the top 8 teams currently in RPI

I covered Missouri State (#7) and Jesus Barea...above

Ohio State has had a tremendous year and they deserve to be ranked #1

Michael Adekokun gets credit for being their best player

Adekokun has 8 goals and 11 assists ...27 points

I would be very surprised if Michael Adekokun does not end up being one of the 3 finalists for the award.

Adekokun and Emil are both great soccer players.

Denver is currently #2 in RPI

when top drawer soccer did their mid season top 100, they had Emil at #2 and Sam Bassett of Denver at #1

Bassett has 7 goals and 10 assists...24 points

Pitt is currently #3 in RPI

their regular season is over

Luis Sahmkow is their points leader....with 21  (9 goals and 3 assists)

Hofstra is currently #4 in RPI

they have 2 players battling to be their points leader

Laurie Goddard has 9 goals and 5 assists (23 points)

Jacob Woznicki has 8 goals and 5 assists (21 points)

Jacob Woznick seems to get a tremendous amount of respect nationally

Penn is currently #5 in RPI

Stas Korzeniowski is their points leader with 26  (12 goals and 2 assists)

Virginia rocketed up to #6 in RPI after upsetting Pitt in the ACC tourney quarterfinals

Virginia is a strange team....as their points leader only has 12 points

Nick Dang 6 goals and no assists

In the link that I posted, you probably noticed that Duke is the nation's leader in goals per game

Duke is currently #8 in RPI

Duke has an impressive 3 players with 20 points or more

Ulfur Bjornsson, has 29 points (13 goals and 3 assists)

Adam Luckhurts has 24 points (11 goals and 2 assists)

Drew Kerr has 20 points (5 goals and 10 assists)

when I have watched ACC soccer on the ACC network....the announcers  rave the most about Drew Kerr

Obviously, this brute force "Hermann Trophy" analysis...ignores great defenders and great goalkeepers

speaking of defenders...when they name the 15 Hermann Trophy semifinalists in mid November, I know that I am biased...but I think that Beto Ydrach deserves to be considered for that elite group of 15 semifinalists.

A little lost in the disappointment of the loss to Georgetown yesterday is the fact that Emil now has the second highest number of goals for Akron in a single season. And I don't think this season is over yet. 😊

I believe that surpasses Louis Nanchoff in 197…. 6? @ (22) goals.

I can't answer your question.....but one site had interesting info .....on 2 brothers being all americans

Louis immigrated with his family from North Macedonia, then Yugoslavia, when he was thirteen years old. His family settled in Akron, Ohio, where he attended Central-Hower High School. After high school, he attended the University of Akron where he played as a forward on the men's soccer team from 1974 to 1977. He and his brother George were top players with the Zips. Both Louie and George earned first team All American honors in 1976. This was the first time in NCAA history that two brothers received first team recognition the same year. Louie then garnered second team honors in 1977.

Here is another MLS Mock Draft

https://draftutopia.com/2025mlsmockdraft.html

Good news and bad news for Zips fans.....

Emil is again forecasted to be the #2 overall pick in the draft.

The bad news is that the writer lists 90 players that he thinks....will be drafted.

Emil is the only zip forecasted to be drafted.

Be sure to read to the bottom of the note....at the bottom, I share who the ESPN soccer broadcaster....predicted to win the Hermann Trophy

That just does not pass my smell test.

Dyson Clapier and Malik Henry were both drafted in the top 40 last year.     Are they tied to the team that drafted them last year?

There is no possible way that Beto Ydrach is not one of the 90 best draft eligible players.

Mitch Budler was 3rd team all american.    I do not know if Mitch is draft eligible (Juniors can be drafted) but Mitch is one of the Best GK's in the country.

In this mock draft, I was absolutely floored by the dominance of the 4 college cup teams in this mock draft.

This writer predicts that Ohio State will have 3 players selected in the top 10 and that Denver will have 5 players selected in the top 25.

Again, I know nothing about this writer.....but The talent gap between Akron and the college cup teams .....to me ...is not this extreme.

Writer has 7 players being drafted for 3 different teams (Denver, Vermont and Marshall)

1 player for Akron ?????   - I Just don't agree with this writer.

Let's look at the 4 college cup teams

Ohio State

1. Michael Adedokun

8. Siggi Magnusson

10. Nathan Demian  (this was the young man , who was shot as he was walking home....the night of OSU QF win...he was innocent bystander and was not able to play against Marshall)

33. Deylan Veilos

41.  Anthony Samways

Denver

4. Sam Bassett

16. Ian Smith

19. Jason Belloli

20. Trevor Wright

25. Ronan Wynne

62. Oje Ofurein

68. Ben Smith

Vermont

9. Yaniv Bazini

11. Sydney Wathuta

24. Nathan Simeon

34. Mike Bleeker

40. Aarean Schultze Solano

55. Zach Barrett

69.   Max Murray

Marshall

13. Lineker Rodrgiues Dos Santos

21. Marco Silva

29. Tarik Pannholzer   (this young man was super impressive in college cup....if Marshall had won, Pannholzer should have been voted Most outstanding player)

39. Takahiro Fujito

42. Tajima Okiyoshi

43. Alex Bamford

51. Theo Goddard

At halftime, the one ESPN soccer broadcaster....asked the other Broadcaster(Devon Kerr).....to predict the final 3 for the Hermann Trophy...and to predict the winner

Devon Kerr could not narrow it down to 3

his final four were:

Michael Adedokun  , Ohio State  ....11 goals and 11 assists

Sam Bassett, Denver......13 assists

Lineker Rodrigues Dos Santos, Marshall....15 goals

Emil Jaaskilainen, Akron......23 goals

Devon Kerr said that Emil Jaaskilainen has been the best player in college soccer and that Emil should win the Hermann Trophy
