  1. I just posted in the BG thread that Antino is dedicating the rest of his final season to E-man because his season is over. Situations like this push basketball so far down the list of priorities that it is hardly visible. Get well, big man.

  2. USA Today released its grades for college football programs (rather subjectively related to "reaching their potential"). Akron got a B+ and was listed first in its grade level because of alphabetical order. Iowa State got an A. Nice to see both teams get some recognition for seasons that were beyond just about everyone's expectations.

  3. I must say that I'd forgotten what it was like to watch bad basketball from "my" team. Safe to say we're spoiled.

  4. EDIT: Fun listen...The stuff about the moped accident and going to play college soccer at Akron, the references to LeBron and Romeo Travis, whose name Steve doesn't say but we Akron fans know, the discussion about Darlington Nagbe, the comments about Caleb Porter...fun stuff. http://www.natebowling.com/podcast/2018/1/7/ep-24-twenty-years-from-now-yallwill-all-claim-you-loved-colin-kaepernick-and-other-musings-steve-zakuani-color-analyst-seattle-sounders 2:00: Steve summarizes the backstory of his youth that begins in the Congo (then Zaire) and life in English Council Estates (projects) in Tottenham. American soccer saved his life. Steve found that, in America, one could play soccer and go to a university. He was on this way to the University of Akron (where Lebron is from and we find out more about that at 45:00.)... ...Hot Take 5 Your thoughts on the Sigi Experiment in LA. Your thoughts on Darlignton Nagbe moving to Atlanta. What’s up with Caleb Porter? In reference to the US Men’s National Team: if I make you technical director of US Soccer, what do you do? Who are the soccer writers who you read first, who do you trust? Who is doing good work? Just before the 8 minute mark he starts talking about Akron.

  5. There are a lot of empty seats in front of me now. They were all Dambrot supporters who bailed on the team when he left. This includes the guy who would yell "3 seconds" every time an opposing player stood in the paint. If you are so enamored with Dambrot more than you are U of A, it's a 2 hour drive to see him coach. This is when the team needs our support. And I do enjoy my unobstructed view.

  9. Loved the defensive intensity displayed by Buffalo. I truly appreciated that effort and hustle. The quick, relentless, swarming defense Buffalo displayed against us on the hardwood reminded me of what Stanford did to us on the pitch. Totally took us out of our game & we weren't able to adapt/respond. Haven't had a beatdown like that since VCU. I think we're athletic (at least relative to past Akron squads), but Buffalo looked much quicker to a man. Loved the game & attitude Cotton displayed. He's the only one who didn't look frustrated & rattled. There was one point where we had four freshmen and a sophomore on the floor last night. Earlier in the season I said I just didn't appreciate E-man's game. Then he had, what, 3 good games in a row (and even made basketball moves a couple of times)? Looks like that was clearly an aberration; he's just not worth much -v- quality competition. Kostelac looks to have potential, but remember how underwhelming even Zeke Marshall was his first 3 years? I guess most bigs are like that. Kostelac's got a ways to go. I wasn't able to make the game last night, but this team definitely needs our support. I'm going to be there cheering for & encouraging the fellas on Saturday, win or lose.

  10. Kind of a low key affair this past weekend, T & F held their first Open Meet to coincide with the Annual Pole Vault Convention, but some nice results. On the women's side Dara Perry had a nice 60 dash, and it looks like having Olympian Bridget Franek on the staff is paying off in the distances, with Haley Hess winning the mile, Ashley Murray taking the 3,000 and freshman Lean Recker winning the 800. Multis talent Jackie Siefring got some workout in the individual events and won the long jump, and Olivia Snyder took the win in the shot put. Lucy Bryan is a real class vaulter and placed 3rd in the Elite group. Taron Slone took the 200 on the men's side, while Garret Crichlow won the mile, Freshman Marc Migliozzi won the 3k and Preston Fillman took home a double with wins in the 60 Hurdles and the Long Jump. NCAA finalist Curtis Richardson got the season off with a nice win in the high jump and NCAA champ Matt Ludwing won the Elite PV in a jump off against former Zip and World Champion Shawn Barber. One of the Zips Football team members OL Nick Fazio threw int he weights, but no sign of Jovann Letuli or Kwadarrius Smith...too early to get them back in if they come at all.

  12. Best wishes to Joao. At the beginning of this past season, I thought that the zips would lose in the NCAA round of 32 because I did not know what to expect from the 2 center backs. I had no idea that Joao would be the best player on the team that Daniel Strachan would also be outstanding. The 2 great freshman center DB's propelled this team to the final four. Thank you for everything , Joao and do super in MLS.
