  1. I can't be there, so everyone please give Ivey a great ovation. The last part of the season's been rough, but I hope everyone cheers this team on. It's so easy to soon forget that KD left this program in a heap of ashes. Groce has almost had an identical job as Zips' baseball coach, Chris Sabo, i.e., starting from scratch. Ivey stuck around and is a Zip for life! Thank you Jimmond!!!

  2. If we had players that could knock down open 3's or a C that could catch a dump off pass and slam it home, LCJ dribble penetration ability would be much more useful. We have neither.

  3. I watched a decent chunk of that video @Illini Zip posted on 2/15. Dawson seemed to do a good job at both finishing at the rim in traffic and at hitting open 3's. It's just a chunk of 1 game, but I feel he would be an instant help on the offensive end. I feel he has some improving to do on the defensive end of the court. I'd expect the team culture and Groce stressing defense to earn minutes will help him make big strides in that department.

  4. Saturday was just a formality, but a fun one, as the Zips won their sixth straight MAC Championships. Mackenzie Vargas defended her title in the 200 Fly successfully, with teammates Paulina Nogaj and Jessica Bonezzi sweeping the medals. EMU's Delaney Duncan showed why she was Swimmer of the Year with her record in the 200 Back, with Zip Paula Garcia taking silver. Sarah Watson won the 100 Free setting up her title as Freshman Swimmer of the Year, and Morgan Waggoner, Sadie Fazekas, Ragen Engel and Ellie Nebraska made it a 1-2-3-4-5 sweep for Akron. Avery Movold and Olivia Gardner made the Championship finals in the 200 Back. Akron was shut out of the 1,650 Free, but no big deal. And Karly Crail r3ocvered for a silver in the 3 meter dive, with Kami Goodrick placing 5th and was named Freshman Diver of the Year. Akron 0ut an exclamation point o n the meet with a 2 second besting of the Meet, MAc and Ocacek records in the 400 Free Relay, as Engel, Wtson, Fazekas and Henell clocked in at 3:14.42. Total score - 867 points to EMU's 583 in second. Mde up for the stinker in the JAR that afternoon.

  5. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I felt it was a mistake adding additional non-revenue sports when the ones we have already aren't properly funded. From what I understand the baseball program is supposed to be self funded. I read a week or so back how we got something close to a million dollar donation for a stadium renovation, which is nice, but I haven't heard anything about us receiving large donations to endow scholarship/coaches salary/travel costs/etc.. Is the university going to get stuck covering these costs when/if the donations dry up? As for women's lacrosse, pretty much the entire conference, outside of Kent, is in the Carolinas or Florida. It can't be cheap to bus them back and forth. I have no idea why we started the program. If it was a title IX issue, we should have just not brought back baseball and cut the men's golf team. Take that savings and use it towards resurfacing the track, better funding the women's programs that perpetually underachieve (basketball, soccer, softball), or just reduce the deficit.

  8. Anybody ever notice how the recruiting threads pick up when the team is playing poorly. So much for living in the moment!

  9. I noticed that LCJ was the first one off the bench cheering on his teammates after he was taken out on Saturday. I think he has the right attitude. He has a poor percentage shooting the 3. He has a quick first step but has had difficulty finishing among the trees near the basket. He has been making his short jumpers but forever reason does not want to take that shot. When he plays poorly this team looks really bad. I like Cheese playing point.

  10. Davis was top 5 in everything but bench and 20yd shuttle among his position group. Nice job! It might be time to start guessing where he gets drafted...

  12. AKRON BASEBALL SIGNS 13 STUDENT-ATHLETES AKRON, Ohio —University of Akron first-year head baseball coach Chris Sabo signed 13 student-athletes to his first class. "I am pleased to announce our first commitments to the University of Akron baseball program," Sabo said. "The 13 players represent a solid variety of junior college transfers and high school seniors, position players and pitchers. In addition, I'm excited that we have signed a number of strong players from the state of Ohio, a state which we will always have a strong focus on." The class features homegrown talent. Five student-athletes list their hometowns within the state of Ohio, four within a 30-mile radius of campus. Additionally, three incoming Zips hail from Indiana, two from New York, and one each from Colorado, Illinois, and Texas. One signee— junior LHP Austin Gussman (Thornton, Colo.)— is currently enrolled in classes at Akron. Additionally, four are high school seniors, while nine are junior college transfers. Six are listed as pitchers, four as outfielders, and three as infielders. Eleven of the signees played at least one other sport in high school. Nine earned academic honors for sporting a 3.5+ grade-point average. "As we create a new baseball program at Akron, I'm delighted that we have generated interest in student-athletes who share the same vision and passion for The University of Akron as myself and my assistant coaches. These student-athletes will have a lasting legacy at Akron," Sabo added. "I look forward in working with these young men when Akron baseball takes the field in the fall of 2019." 13. They fell to one game over .500 in a down season in the MAC with a huge group of pansies on the OOC schedule by losing to what may be the worst OU team I have seen in years. Having a tough time putting a positive spin on that one. I realize it is only one game and we've seen some good effort this year, but to lay that egg against a bottom dwelling team in such an important game is disheartening.

  14. Just listened to the post-game. Groce told us the obvious- Ohio U was better physically and mentally and played with more heart. He left out that they were better coached. That was a heartless effort. Nobody seemed to much give a $h!+. Ivey and LCJ got introduced to the bench early and deservedly. Shame the didn't have enough players available to sit Utomi, Riak, Cheese, Banks and Roscoe with them. Too bad they won't dress Lucas Smith. He'll at least put up a fight. The next time I see the bench crew having a party during a loss, I will start screaming at them from the rail. I realize this loss was an ugly one and the exception to the rule, but today I am left to wonder where the progress is in this program. This sure as hell better be a wake up call. If we see the smallest modicum of this Tuesday night, we can pack it in.

  16. This was the worst performance I've seen since the VCU debacle in the Dance. I was not a fan of the hire when we brought in Groce. I fell for some of the hype, but he's proving otherwise. John Groce is not a good basketball coach. The records prove it. He was supposed to be a good recruiter. Two of his prime recruits never played a game for UA. I'm still rooting for him to change my mind because I love this school and it's teams, but next year better be big strides forward.
