we lost one like this
-
You've got to f'in kidding me right WTF kind of throw was that I don't care what kind of wind there is. The defense give up "0" points and we still lose thanks to the one set of downs CJ7 gets into the game. I'm typing it again -- the defense pitched a shut out and we are still going to lose. A freaking shut out!!!!!!!
-
How bad is the Akron O-Line -- they can't even slow down the D-Line of Miami.By the way that might be why the TE doesn't get the ball thrown to them -- WTF catch the damn ball.
-
CJ7 comes into the game and everyone knows passing is an after thought -- what a freaking joke TD Miami -- that was a good idea. Bring in the terrible QB for the mediocre one.
-
I can't be the only person in this board that saw CJ11 play in HS or see Mentor play -- this kid was not a drop back passer he was and is a spread offense QB. Mentor runs one of the more complex offenses in HS and they run a play every 20 seconds. Why aren't we going down field? They are all up front because we aren't even trying stretch the defense.

Obviously you don't share Bobby's hatred for everything red and gray -- that's okay. I'm ambivalent when it comes to them, but I did crack a smile on Saturday night when they lost. My guess would for why there is hatred for the team in Columbus is the overwhelming gushing by our own hometown newspapers and tv stations coupled with the complete and obnoxious fans that most of which have absolutely no affiliation with the school. Columbus fans remind me of Miami fans (to try to bring this topic back to this week) they look down on Akron, its graduates and its sports teams. Look no further than what the legislature in Columbus is considering doing to a school with well over 100 years of history in favor of one with 40. If the people on this board don't stand up and defend Akron then it's not getting defended. If hating on the school in Columbus some how brings happiness and sunshine to people's life -- so be it. If having a place to post their hatred in a safe zone among many like minded people helps -- good for them. This Akron fan will not shed a tear if Columbus loses next week and a school that lost to a Div. 1AA school represents the Big 11 in the BCS. It will only help to validate the complete and utter BS that is the BCS. Thinking of it that way, this year I'll actually take a rooting interest and root for Michigan.

It is no secret I have been disappointed with the way this team gave up at the Temple game and didn't show up in BG. With that in mind I was impressed with the passion the Zips played with this week and will look forward to it continuing this week. IF this team can win at Miami (a tough feat for Akron teams whenever we play them) I will be impressed with the change -- hopefully JD heard his critics and saw the need for a sense of urgency.CJ11's performance makes one stop to wonder what the BG game would have looked like with him in there. CJ7 is an excellent athlete, but he is NOT a quarterback. I hope those of you screaming for him all throughout the year see that now. This has been CJ11's first year playing QB at the Div. 1 level and if the last game was a sign of his ability we should start to figure out where CJ7 is going to play in 2008. Igor is the main difference on special teams -- call it coaching if you want, but when Igor signed to come hear we were all pretty excited with his potential. If I recall he was a top (nationally) kicking recruit. If he can kick like this year for all four years -- we look to be in good shape at that position. Note -- his former teammate at Mentor Kevin Harper (he of the record setting 61 yard field goal) has been offered by Can't.Another former Mentor teammate Bart Tanski (QB) doesn't have any Div. 1 offers and has run the spread offense since the 7th grade. If you haven't had a chance to seem he play I think he's pretty impressive, just too short (maybe 6-1) for the most schools. Would love to see him and Tyler Shutz (WR) in Akron Blue and Gold next year. The defense looked more alive this week too. They changed things up and got pressure on the QB -- not to mention smothered the running game after the first quarter. If we had DBs that could cover anyone this defense could be scary. The DBs get my vote for most disappointing of 2007. I thought they were the strong suite of our defense and have turned out being the weak link. It could be scheme, but guys running free in secondary week after week looks to me like poor DB play.GP1 Would love to see some supporting data around pro football position coaches making that kind of money. The last I remember reading people were up in arms when Dan Snyder decided to pay his offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator $1 million each. Those are coordinator positions with a free spending coach. I do think the difference between the NFL and College coaching comes down to the atmosphere you want to be a part of and would love to see Mike Johnson return to his alma mater at some point. His knowledge and experience would certainly play well with young impressionable college age kids.GO Zips be the preppies!

I'm a Browns season ticket holder and I'm glad DA is doing well. At the first game this season Charlie was holding the ball too long, but the offensive play calling changed significantly when DA got into the game. Also, the defense backed off because they were already up. This is not an excuse -- it is a fact I witnessed from my seat in the dog pound. I don't know if Charlie would have faired any better if he stayed in, but going down to Pittsburgh early wasn't all his fault. Pittsburgh's first drive was 22 yards after a Cleveland punt, the second was a field goal after a CF interception and the fourth was a one play 40 yard drive after a Jamal Lewis fumble. He was responsible for 3 points and took 100% of the blame for all 17.

I kind of think your an asshole to come on this board and post this message for no other reason than to bash Charlie Frye. The numbers are the numbers, but the point of posting this is for nothing more than to say I told you so. Now go away -- you told us so. Hope your fantastically happy and happy that one of our own is a third stringer.

Where are all of the JD apologists today?Last night was an incredibly poor excuse for MAC football. I'm pretty sure that team last night would have lost to most Div. 1-AA teams. This team is playing completely uninspired. CJ11 was suspended Domonkos is off the team for the year. One would think with all the suspensions and the tight ship JD is trying to give the appearance he's running this team would be playing solid fundamental football, but not only is this team playing terrible they are completely undisciplined. They are regularly out of position on D (see sucked in) and commit penalties at the most inopportune times (see the first play of the game WTF). Everyone is frustrated by the 3-3-5 -- here is something even more frustrating the depth chart shows that 6 of the 11 are seniors. What does that mean for next year? When is someone going to ask JD some tough questions about this team? We've all heard him talk about why he decided to play the 3-3-5, but who has heard them explain their complete and utter incompetence. This team is coming apart at the seams. I'm guessing we'll be able to count the people at the game on Wednesday while we're sitting in the stands. In another section someone point out -- at least we're not Can't. Oh yeah that makes me feel better -- that is what I want my alma mater to strive for. Barring a miracluous come back this team is going to have gone from 6-5 to 7-6 to 5-7 to 3-9. The interesting thing about those asking for more time is they are asking for us to ask for more time with JD. The further we get with JD's recruits the worse this team gets. For those asking about Paul Winters - I'm not sure he's the answer it appears his teams have taken on the big offense no defense look of the LO era. Saw that WSU lost a 58-50 game in 3OT this year.It is time to up your expectations! If the people on this board don't have higher expectation for this University and its athletics then we've really got no hope. Tell me you watched that game last night at your really looking forward to watching that kind of football for another two years. Tell me that's the kind of football you want to open a new stadium with. Tell me that's the kind of football that is going to bring this program to prominence. Signed -- Sick and tired of being sick and tired with this kind of horrendous football.
-
What I have a hard time understanding is the use of the 3-3-5 or as it was known years ago the Nickel defense. Isn't the nickel defense supposed to be used to stop the pass? I can tolerate a defense like the3-3-5 if it does the one thing it is designed to, but when it can't do that either -- what is the point? As for CJ7 -- this guy needs to run the option not the pass offense. I'm starting to think CJ11 was the QB because he was a quarterback not a running back taking snaps.

Cap'n I'm not sure why you would be surprised by the fire JD conversation. You have been one of the leading proponents of expecting more than mediocrity from Akron athletics. Now that people are expecting more I would say you are backing down from your expectations. You were the one who thought this team could win the MAC East this year and now that they look like they aren't going to figure in the top half of the division your questioning other people who think the coach should be canned? It doesn't seem consistent to me. Financially speaking I don't see firing JD as an option and at this point it might not even be the right decision, but you have to admit four years in nobody on this board was expecting our high point to be his first year. The expectation was to get better every year and now it looks like we are going the other way. I always appreciate your opinion and look for your rational thoughts after a loss when most of us are pulling our hair out. Please tell me you aren't really asking the question why people are calling for JD's head. People have upped their expectations

The only reason I don't see JD going anywhere is because of his contract. Regardless of how manageable some people on this board seem to think the contract is they aren't going to pay a person that much not to coach football at Akron. As far as expectations go -- I'm always the one leading the expectations bandwagon on this board so I'm not sure why anyone is calling me out. I'm merely pointing out Cap'n was the only person I saw who thought this team was going to win the MAC East and why I asked him to put it on the front page. I thought from the beginning this was a rebuilding year and I'm afraid early success against Can't and the miracle win against WMU raised expectations. That being said I'm not too thrilled by Moorehead's play calling and have said since game one the look/look offense has got to go. The defense is pathetic and the 3-3-5 (as has been discussed to death here) is atrocious. The excuse that there aren't enough good big d-lineman is exactly that an excuse -- if it was the truth plenty of people would be running the same sorry excuse for a defense. When does basketball season start?
-
JD isn't going anywhere. You're entitled to be disappointed in his team this year, but outside of the Cap'n I'm not sure there were too many of us expecting much from this team this year.
-
This team is just not very good. I'm not sure they are mentally strong either -- the mental mistakes just seem to be pathetic at this point. Missed 35 yard field goal, missed TD catch by Williams -- those two scores and this game is completely different right now.

WGR 500 AM from Buffalo has there feed. You have to register, but the game comes in fine.

Well as predicted by many on this board the MAC East and MAC in general seem to be in a down year. With Temple manhandling (I never thought I would type those two words in succession) Miami yesterday if Akron wins out they win the MAC East. It seems highly improbable they could do so given their erratic play this year, but I must say the bye week couldn't have come at a better time. The ability to circle the wagons and regroup heading into the most significant part of your schedule could prove to be the difference if we can get consistent play from both sides of the ball. The Buffalo game is going to be critical this week. Has anyone had an opportunity to see Buffalo play? How are they doing it -- as Cap'n said in a previous post this not what was expected of this team. I heard Tony Kornheiser even reference Turner Gill in relation to replacing Bill Calahan at Nebraska not that Tom Osborne is back in the fold. What is it going to take for Akron to run the table in this conference? Is it simply to early for this team to compete given the inexperience on the offensive side of the ball? Has the topsy turvy beginning of this season provided them with enough real game experiences and interesting situations such that they can parlay that to their advantage in the second half.....what do you all put the odds of the Zips finishing the season on top the MAC East. I'm putting the percentage at 20%. We never play well at Miami and freak things just seem to happen -- Big Ben and Travis Prentiss are two things that come to mind when I think of games down there.
-
I think this team may struggle to get going early as they add the new talent and others start to play a larger role. With that said I think this team will gel as the season goes on and probably be playing their best baseball at the end of the year.

The thing that I'm sick and tired of are fans on this board who get mad at those of us that expect more. We've had this conversation many times over on this board, but it usually centers around why we as fans don't expect more from our athletic department. In the WMU post I pointed out why all of the accolades for Brookhart? The one accolade he deserved was his teams willingness to never say die. I'm not going to apologize for my expectations. I'm sick of it not being us year in and year out. A few years ago when the ball bounced our way four about four consecutive days and we were able to win the MAC East -- JDs team showed heart and a never say die attitude in winning the MAC Championship game. A lot of people got excited because of that, but since then we've regressed. JD may still prove to be a good coach in the next few years, but I've given him four years before passing any judgement and in year four I'm not impressed. I'm not impressed with the offense and the 3-3-5 is pathetic. We get the excuse for the 3-3-5 that they can't recruit enought DL to run anything else. If that were true the entire conference would be running the 3-3-5. A school like West Virginia that should be able to recruit DL by the buckets wouldn't be runnning either. I think he simply likes it and won't say it. It took him how many games this year to shelve Dennis Kennedy when it was obvioius he couldn't get out of his own way. I'm not sold on either QB right now, but I know for a fact the offense Jacq ran in HS was far more complicated than the offense they are running now and Jacq played an excellent WR his junior year so to say he isn't fast enough or he is the problem in this offense I'm not buying it. Not having Jacq or CJ at WR on this team in the slot makes me wonder what the coaches are thinking. Proud alum that is expecting more from his alma mater and sick of losing games we should win! I'll root for this team and argue with my friends about Akron, but don't bust my balls because I've taken off the rose colored glasses after four years. How about you join us here in reality!

Ummmm, excuse me how is JD getting credit for a complete blown coverage of a kick that was returned 89 yards. If the team went into Western and took care of business I get it, but this was a miracle win. A miracle win that I'll take, but this was a horribly played defensive football game that saw (IMHO) horrible play calling on the final drive that stalled with four passes into the end zone from the seven. Don't get me wrong -- I'll take any win. Keep in mind though we have no idea if this WMU team is any good -- they beat a terrible Toledo team that barely squeaked by Liberty yesterday and Central Connecticut State. On the other hand GP1 how is it we doubt the coaches competence and we're but monkeys and you trash (far worse than any of us) the QB of this team and you don't get the same moniker? By the way the QB that threw for almost 400 yards yesterday. Someone has to get him some stickum, but this was a quite an improvement this week from the passing perspective.

Why is it bad for a fan (short for fanatic by the way) to get pissed off when we are in our fourth year with a coach and we still haven't seen much? Didn't we hire JD to turn the corner -- isn't year four the year we should be turning the corner? Maybe the reason people get pissed when Akron gets smoked by UConn is because we're sick of losing those games and we want our turn. We want our Urban Meyer, we want our Brian Kelly, we want our Terry Hoepner - why can't Akron catch lightning in a bottle once and pick the coach that turns them around quickly and we get national recognition. Truth be told we stuck too long with Owens and I'm personally afraid the same thing may happen with JD. Maybe Captain will be right this year and we'll win the MAC (I'll be one of the first in line of tickets to the MAC Championship). One year everyone is complaining on here we don't get any respect and the fans are happy with moral victories when we shouldn't be. The next year people are sick of settling for moral victories and the same people are bitching because people don't want that either?I'll probably take a beating for this, but I'll can say one thing about the Owens era - it was known for offense. We may not have stopped anyone, but it was some entertaining offensive football most of the time. We are in year four and I can't count on seeing one side of the ball be entertaining. The defense looked like they turned a corner and then shit down their leg against Indiana and UConn.I'll give you there is nothing that can be done now and I'm hopefull I'll be surprised if we win the MAC East -- I'm not leaving the bandwagon yet.

Interestingly enough I can promise you my response was most likely the first or one of the first into WEWS. I was watching the game at home because i was coaching football at the same time as the first half. Like I said I think I wrote to a different address at WEWS. Misson must be the sports guy this person sounded a lot more rational.
-
I must have wrote to a different part of the station -- here is my response. Thanks for writing in with your thoughts. There were many viewers disappointed, but NewsChannel5 had an agreement with ABC to begin carrying the game at 3:30. Our apologies that you missed the ending. Darlene
-
I mentioned it before and I'll put it here again -- George Thomas is an OSU alum. I have yet to receive a response from WEWS -- I did ask them to add a discussion thread to their website titled. Did Akron/Can't fans get screwed by cutting over to the OSU game on Saturday? Haven't checked yet to see if they posted it -- I'm guessing they didn't.

Blame everything on the fraternities everyone else does -- please if every fraternity member at the University came there would be 400 people there. Trust me you were lucky if half showed up.
