Of course logic doesn't seem to play a big role in these anyway, how in the world did former #4 BC beat unranked Boston U and then lose to unranked Providence and rise two spots to #2?
-
I hear what you're saying about ND's incredible "poll buoyancy" Cap'n, but they DID beat Duke 4-1 the day after the 3-0 Zip win. Hey, I guess we should oot for them to stay highly ranked. This way, come NCAA tourney seeding/selection, it will go down as a true, undeniable quality win.I think the pollsters were just giving them due credit for not getting a bigger beat-down from the Zips. They stayed within 3, quite an accomplishment.

The National News had a story on LeBron at the Olympics. They used some footage of him at a clinic for kids at the JAR. You could clearly players names on Banners, some of the MAC East Championship banners and Zippy on the floor but not one mention of where they were. Someday.
-
Opening quote from that article "What do we really know about the MAC? I’m willing to bet that the average college football fan couldn’t name all 12 teams in the conference and they would struggle naming half of them." I guess so, since we actually have 13.

You know golf just tends to draw these kinds of people. If you want to have a winning team you have to put up with a certain amount of it.

The Cuse are not that good. They lost to Miami of OH last year 17-14 and just barely knocked off Buffalo 20-12. There only other win was the upset win over Lville. They were bad last year. They were shut out 35-0 by a medicore Iowa and blown out in back to back weeks Vs WVU 55-14 and Rutgers 38-14.At 2-10 The Cuse is very beatable by UofA. I have doubts the Cuse will improve all that much this seasonExactly why I'm "worried" about our game with them getting the pillow fight of the week designation that ESPN's Bottom Ten designates every week of the season. If we both lose our first game (which is quite possible) we may get that "honor". Oh well, at least as you said, we could still beat them.
-
I have a bad feeling about the "pillow fight of the week" game against the Cuse.

Anyone who can salvage something of their lives from an awful situation (especially at a young age), at least deserves another chance. If you screw up again, it means you didn't learn anything and that's then on you. The Buckeye board seemed pretty lenient, most of them wished him well, and while it seems like they'd be williing to take him back, they understood why it probably wouldn't be a good idea. Several metnioned that he was coming to the Zips, but I didn't see anyone badmouthing him or the program or the school. There were even a few that had good things to say (of course that could be some of our guys in disguise ), but I just found it interesting that there was nothing disparaging thrown our way.

You missed #3 Indiana, but you're right, otherwise that's it.
-
And if you look at the top 100 freshman to watch on the same site, four of the top 100 are Zips. Wake has five and Indiana and Maryland have four as well. So we got more top 100 than UCLA and as such are ranked aboved them. When I look at the teams ranked below us, I am incredibly impressed with what Coach Porter has done in a very short time. I do believe it will transfer to the field.

Well at least he has a chance to go out a winner. And now that he's closer to me, maybe I can talk my boss into letting me take the Browns tickets when they come in Oct 19th.

Scouts write up about Zeke @ WV Jamfest
MDZip replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Zeke's a smart guy (as shown by his choice of major) - any chance he can graduate right now? We can't wait another year and a half to see him. Some of us are getting old already. Of course five years from now (I hope) we'll all be whining about the Zeke era being over. -
Wow, that is a really weird site - the rest of the site is just like it, it's all written in that very strange style. And its not like they have a college football preview section, it's just individual stories on different programs, I wonder how they picked the Zips to preview? This is either a foreign operation trying to break into an English langauge market or a summer school project for some seventh graders to pass a failed English class.

Did anyone read to the bottom of the article where it had a suggestion for a combined MAC/WAC TV network? (The (M)(W)AC network?) Since most of the schools are separated by 3 hours, you could have four games a day (two from each conference). I think that's brilliant - anyone sent this on to Rick Chryst yet?
-
Especially when looking at who got selected for some of our MAC brethren (Ball St, CMU, Buffalo) who aren't exactly household names (probably even in their own households).

Wow, first Andrew Moss, now Rydell Brooks

And it made the top "headline" section on ESPN's men's basketball. For a guy that never even played one minute for us. Great. -
A Msg from Zeke Marshall's MOM...
MDZip replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
A suggestion - don't read it, don't post it - who cares. Zeke made a decision that he thinks is right for him and good for him. Even had he chosen to go elsewhere, I would wish him the best. He seems like a fine young man, bright, level-headed, and the definition of a student athlete. He picked a school for academic reasons without getting stars in his eyes. What more could you want from a 17 year old? As a basketball recruit, terrific - picking Akron for the right academic reasons - priceless. You don't get a lot better publicity for a school than that (see the article on the artifical pancreas again). Not once have I seen anything about picking Akron as a nice steppingstone to the NBA, think Micheal Beasley or OJ Mayo picked their schools that way? That's what's really great about this verbal. Congratulations Zeke, I hope your college experience turns out to be just what you evidently are envisioning. -

And Kentucky has an 8th grader. This is nuts.http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/05/02/...at-high-school/ -
While I love when our football and basketball teams are doing well, this is the kind of stuff that really makes me proud.

Toledo hires Gene Cross as Head Men's Basketball Coach
MDZip replied to ZZZips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
"The University of Toledo is expected to name Notre Dame assistant Gene Cross its new men's basketball coach today.Former Providence coach Tim Welsh also interviewed but took his name out of the running for the job after he visted the campus."I guess you could understand Welsh's reasoning. Seriously, I still don't understand why they got rid of Joplin. He was dedicated to the school and had done a pretty good job. Guess they just felt as though they had some ground to make up to catch up to the Zips success. -

Since I had heard a lot about him, I got to see Zeke play down at the Hoop Magic tournament in Chantilly, VA this weekend. I was nothing but a fan interested in watching him play, but it was fun to watch him knowing that he had some interest in UA. Since he is only a junior if he continues to develop his game and especially continues to get stronger, he will be a force to be reckoned with. And as the saying goes, you can't teach height and he has plenty of that. He is already a pretty intimidating force in the paint, I only had the time to see one game, but he must have blocked a half dozen shots in it. He had several nice offensive rebounds and a few putbacks. His team didn't seem to work real hard getting the ball into him, though it seemed that he had established position plenty of times. His free throw mechanics look smooth, a nice easy high arc to it. I am afraid I was bad luck, though, as the only game I saw was the one they lost. They played a tough team and could have beaten them, but if he looked good against a good team, I wish I could have seen him play against one of the lesser teams. Good luck in your senior year Zeke. -
I love KD and I certainly hope you are right, but when you look at the cash they're offering (probably in the $800K range) he's got to at least talk to them if they are interested. I hope not, but remember, we do have a very smart head coach. After all, he is a UA grad.

Darn it, I was hoping the big news would be that he still had some eligibility left and regretted missing the college experience.

Thanks Mods for a great job!

I absolutely second that opinion. It is especially helpful for those of us who live outside of the area. I only discovered the site by accident a couple of years ago and just lurked for a while thinking I wouldn't have anything to contribute. Then I signed up and never posted anything for quite a while but then once I got past that I've been throwing my opinions out there just like everyone else. I especially like some of the newer improvements like the chat room, I used that a lot while the post season was going, nice to root with like minded people, even if only virtually. So thanks for all you've done and the effort you've put into it. No chance something like this would have existed when I was in school (despite the fact the Internet didn't exist ), there just wasn't this kind of passion nor energy nor enthusiasm. Hell, we were an also-ran OVC program then. So again thanks, we also recognize that this isn't done for free either.
