  1. Has anyone taken a look on the gozips.com at the 2009 Football Schedule? If so, you will be able to find a link for Game Day and Rubber Bowl Info. I know we don't have a lot of things finalized with the new stadium but one thing is for certain, we aren't returning to the bowl.No wonder some of our opponents still list the Rubber Bowl as the game location for this season.
  2. Based on the progress they made today on the seats, I think they will be in by this time next week.
  3. The two small buildings are the entrances to the endzone facility for the stairwells and elevators for the building. The area between the entrances can be used on gameday for fans to view the game SRO.SRO...lol hopefully one day! With no alcohol standing up shouldn't be a problem.
  4. Correct. I SHOULD have said, can you imagine a front FOUR of Sewell, Bain, Henderson and Tonga! The Purple People Eaters, Steel Curtain, and Fearsome Foursome might have a little company Couldn't happen soon enough. Watched the replay of the Wisconsin game earlier today on the Big 11 Network. As much as I want to believe, with a couple of breaks, we had a shot in that game. Now I am facing the truth. We didn't stop them all day. We barely slowed them down.
  5. Any chance they may move camera 3 inside the press tower or loges. There is not much construction left in this cameras scope to watch. After the scoreboard goes up, camera 2 will have little to show. Also, I would guess that all the cameras will be taken down in another 3-4 weeks anyway. JD is planning to practice in the stadium and I know he tries to limit the number of eyes on some of his practices.
  6. The only thing that might be going on with a football is the guys getting together to play a little 7-on-7. And the kickers practicing on their own.Mainly a lot of lifting, running, and playbook studying.
  7. You must be talking about buying beer in Epcot. There is alcohol all over that place. The Disney World Park is dry. Walt didn't want alcohol in his parks so any venue opened when he was alive are dry and anything after his death can serve alcohol.
  8. I went with Hunter. Most of our sports are either at the top of their game or are making the move in the right direction. I think this will continue under his leadership. The biggest item on the plate of the AD at the moment is the opening of Info. Hunter has been here listening to the fans as to what we want in this new stadium, what we want on game days, planning how things are going to run with the new stadium. I don't really want to start fresh with a new individual so close to the opening. We are in a big transistion as a department and university. Hunter will bring stability immediately and not present a probable hiccup that would occur with a "new" AD.
  9. I would have to go with WMU due only to the fact that my wife went there. As for the east, I went with OU. Not that I am a big fan of any other school in the east but at least they gave us "The Voice of the Zips" Steve French.
  10. I thought one of the current ideas in the recent upgrade and expansion of the athletic facilities was to create an athletic campus within the campus. The new arena should be developed on the site of Memorial Hall. The existing space it currently occupies as well as the space between it and the JAR should be ample. I know that area was slated for the new college of education. Just move that project to behind Central Hower or downtown between the old Inventor's Hall of Fame, which is becoming the new STEM Middle School, and Quaker Square. It would allow you tie in with either school building and develop programs for our students to get more time in the classroom while getting their degree. The costs would be minimal in only needing to acguire land form one source either APS or the city. Plus, it makes it easier for the community and students to get to the facility. It is no different then going to the JAR now and over the next several years many will grow accustomed to coming to Info. which will only be a block away. Most importantly, we can do it as our own arena and not as a city partnership. Next step, $$$$.
  11. I think this puts JD squarely on the "hot seat". The next AD must show success immediately in terms of sold tickets and $ raised and the push for that starts with wins!!! There is no longer the excuse of bad facilities. You have the gem of the conference in the Info.Football must begin to climb into that national spotlight. Anything less than a bowl game would be a failure.Basketball is coming off their best season in 20+ years with a monster recruiting class and are only going to gain more attention with the release of Lebron's movie. The AD needs a good Fall to help with the push for getting these guys a new arena. Speaking of new facilities. Soccer will be playing for a national championship. Let's get them that stadium built. The Lee Jackson Track looks great with the new stands and the track programs responded with a conference sweep and now are poised to make a great showing this week at the NCAA's.Let's build on our success. We have the defending NCAA rifle champion in a freshman. The future that we have talked about for years arrives this Fall at The University of Akron. GO ZIPS!!!!
  12. I think that works out to be sections: 116-120, 215-220 plus whatever the south grass zone is numbered/named.SECTIONS 119 and 121. Then the grass. Basically the same location as they sat in the Rubber Bowl.
  13. Told on Saturday that the scoreboard units start arriving on the 16th.
  14. I was told on Saturday during the open house that they will be using the stadium to practice. In fact, they plan to use it for pre-season camp.
  15. They did place classrooms in the JAR so that they would be able to use certain earmarked funds toward the buidling since it had a designated % of educational purpose. I believe it is also happening with the new stadium. As for the changing and scaling back of the JAR, it did occur and really screwed the place up. Did anyone ever wonder why the first couple rows of stand are unused. Or why the track around the top is not a full 1/10 of a mile in circumference. The measurements for the interior layout were off in the construction after all the adjustments and cutbacks.Something similar happened with the Natatorium in the laying of the pool. I recall they had to do it twice because it didn't measure right for NCAA or Olympic standards.
  16. Maybe a little background on this topic might help some fully understand how the JAR came to be.James A. Rhodes Arena, commonly nicknamed "The JAR," is a basketball arena in Akron, Ohio, named for former Ohio governor Jim Rhodes. The arena opened in 1983 and is home to the University of Akron Zips men's and women's basketball teams. The new facility was six years in the making. Some delays were encountered after the General Assembly, in 1977, appropriated $8 million for the construction of a 10,000-seat building for the 1977-79 biennium. However, by October 1978, when preliminary plans for the new complex were presented and accepted by the Ohio Board of Regents, construction costs had risen so rapidly that it required $12.5 million to complete the project.[1] After scrapping the original design, the University decided to go ahead with plans for a scaled-down version of the building. The 125,538-square-foot building, including an 18,000-square-foot wood floor, was designed by architect Thomas T. K. Zung. The University Board of Trustees approved the new version in July 1981, and ground breaking occurred on March 8, 1982. The Convo Center opened in 1991 so we didn't lose out on that project. Also, Akron has only averaged over 4000 once since the JAR opened - the first year. I don't know what this past season's numbers were but for the previous 4 years we averaged 3369, 3470, 3593, and 3454. It is going to take a lot more to convince anyone we need a new arena. As for building a mutli-use arena downtown by Canal Park, that makes a lot of sense. However, in taking a point made earlier this week on the Channel 3 piece on the new stadium, it was clearly pointed out that Akron has developed this combined athletic complex on campus including the JAR, Natatorium, Info, Lee Jackson. Once the soocer stadium and tennis courts get done, it would be hard pressed to go against everything else and place an arena on the other end of campus. How long would it take to build an arena? If we started demo of the JAR at the end of February, could it be ready by January 1 and the start of conference play or would we lose a whole year of having to play home games off campus? Or bring in portable bleachers, suck up the inconvience and play in the fieldhouse.
  17. hate to burst your bubble/rain on your parade/step on your foot, but it was already announced on the last page... its all good thoughOh well. Put that in about 9 this morning and never hit send.
  18. DRUM ROLL............AND THE WINNER IS MORGAN ST. ON SEPT. 12TH.
  19. The comment was made by Ted Curtis, VP for Capital Planning and Facilities Management.
  20. Couldn't happen to a better group of criminals. Of course now this group of felons is now off the court and back on the streets.
  21. Being outplayed. Not getting any breaks from the replay officials. But Temple's kicker is really doing his best to help us out. Hopefully today we become a second half team. This game is there for our taking. Let's win a record 5th game on the road. GO ZIPS!!!!
  22. While rooting for the ZIPS today, we also need to root for some other teams to keep our bowl hopes alive.UCLA against Arizona St.East Carolina against UTEPToledo against BGSTDUNebraska against Colorado
  23. I put a post on here Sunday detailing each team that is still eligible and what they must to do in their last games. There is one correction to that post and it is for Hawaii. They only need to split their last 2 games to be eligible.
