  1. He'll be in their dowtown Chicago office. Maybe he got the parking fees for his new job confused with those here in Akron.
  2. Somewhere people missed that this thread is under BASKETBALL not Football. We are working on playing Pitt on the hardwood this season.
  3. Heard the same on media day. Also, heard that it was Pitt.
  4. I know everyone is a a little nervous about losing JD and KD to more money. But we need to relax and have faith that Mack and the administartion is getting it done. Mack said it was one of his top priorities along with the stadium deal. However, we need to remember he has been on campus for about 4 1/2 months and has already hired a women's basketball and women's swimming coach as well as a replacement for Waddell. In addition, there are now vacancies in softball and tennis. JD and KD are professionals and I'm certain the desire to keep them here has been expressed and they know they will be getting their due real soon. As for the stadium, that seems like it may be up to the fans to give it the push needed to make it happen. Increases in ticket sales, merchandise, and donations will drive the stadium proposal forward. This isn't like Field of Dreams where if they build it, they will come. We need to start coming to games for them to build it for us. To keep with the thread topic, I think it is a real honor that a Big10+1 school is plucking our assistants - even if it is only Illinois. Isn't it fair play since we are regularly plucking BCS schools of their assistants.
  5. Akron Public Schools has it slated as transition space during it's school rebuilding and renovation phase over the next 10-15 years so I don't see the U grabbing a hold of it any time soon.
  6. Had a discussion late last week with a department staff member as I was wondering about the progress of the search. Finals are next week and then the students scatter for the summer.Apparently Mack, Mary Lou, and the search committee have been doing a nice job bringing the team together weekly and keeping them informed of the progress. They have also prepared for the likely event that a new coach won't be announced until after some of them have left campus for the summer and made arrangements to continue contact and information flowing.I'm glad to see that we are taking our time in this search. Let's find the right coach this time and finally get this program turned around.
  7. The University is doing a real good job keeping costs in check and in line with inflation. The problem comes from less and less support from the state each year. These tuition increases are to make up for the short fall each year from the state. We are becoming less and less a state supported school everyday. The best ways to keep tuition from continuing to increase are to see an increase in revenue from donations and money generating entities (athletics, merchandising) and for the state to find a way to generate more revenue earmarked for education ---- umm casinos. What I lost in Detroit for the MACC and MCB, I could have easily sent a student to school for a semester. If only there was a casino in an Ohio city with a domed stadium and a bowl game and Super Bowl and Final Four. Sorry, off track.Just remember as bad as it gets, it could be worse. Just think of the fools paying the same amount for a Can't St. education.
  8. Yes Zip Watcher. He is one and the same.
  9. During the halftime of the Spring game, they interviewed Mack. He said at the top of his priority list at the moment was 1. Finding an assistant AD and women's BB coach, 2. Locking up JB and KD to long term deals, and 3. A new football stadium.I would think you would like to get a coach hired before the end of the semester and the current players scatter for the summer.
  10. If the trend continues in the NFL for big TE's, with good hands, who can get down field, I'll put Kasparek at the top of my list.On the defense, I would definately go with Kiki.
  11. Good Luck goes out to the cheerleading squad as they travel to Chicago to compete in at an Americheer Nationals competition at the Navy Pier on Sunday. These young men and women put in a full year of work and dedication to the University and the Athletic Dept. and teams. This is the one sport at the University with no "off-season". They have tryouts in late April and begin practice immediately throughout the summer to be ready for football and straight into basketball. They also spend a large amount of time at various promotions, community events/parades, and teaching and conducting clinics for area high school and junior high cheerleaders.Go get 'em Zips and bring back some hardware. And a note that I'm sure the cheerleaders would want to pass on....
  12. My believe was that a large screen / jumbtron like item was always planned for the fieldhouse. It's main purpose would to help post results and relay info during the indoor track meets. Of course, a nice benefit will be it's use during the Spring Game.Several luxury items were either cut out or installation pushed back due to some cost overruns and the push to get it open.
  13. We need an NIT bid. From where this program has been, we have climbed a long way in a short time. Another posting out there is titled 'baby steps'. That is what we need to do here. We won a game in Cleveland. Yes, we are talented enough to have won all 3, but it is at least a start. As much as the NIT may be looked down upon as second class, it is a step this program needs to take to re-emerge into the national spot light. The more post-season experience this team can get, the better. In watching and reading how things are coming together for the NCAA, it looks very promising that we may be invited to the NIT. Most teams being projected for the NIT have 17-22 wins, RPI's of 50-100, SOS of 85-185, and from conferences ranked 8-14.Who does that sound a lot like????When you haven't been invited anywhere since 1989, you don't start turning down dates - even if it is for the Junior Prom.
  14. I spoke with a conference observer of officials following the Can't game and he stated that Futch is not required to sit a game. An ejection for a flagrant foul does automatically also make for a game suspension. The ejection was also not required but a judgement call from the official. Here's to hoping for good officiating in the tourney> Also, breaking news >>>>>
  15. He could have been forced to enroll at Can't but that would be considered cruel and unusual punishment.
  16. As for other activities being disturbed or interupted because of a JAR renovation. The classroom space at the front part of the building is used moderately and could easily lost in the overall count for general classrooms. The gymnasium facility would need to be available until the start of Fall semester for Volleyball. It would inconvenience the program during summer practice needing to move elsewhere. It would also cause the basketball programs difficulty hosting summer camps. Memorial Hall is available but not the greatest of substitutes. Central Hower has limited gym space that might be available depending on the BOE's plan for that building with the closure of the school in June. Of course, that would also move intramural basketball or possibly cancel it for the year.Cancel any use for high school graduations. Relocate the annual AA conference. I'm sure I'm missing something but this at least the minimum to start. The biggest question is can renovation be completed in the time frame of April 1 to Sept. 1.
  17. "Fear the Roo" is not about fearing some 7 foot character running around the gym or stadium. It is about knowing that when you play the Zips that you have the to contend with a determined competitor and a wild group of backers in the AK-Rowdies and ZNO.We showed it with the 10K+ fans who got theselves to Detroit to represent. We showed it at Can't with the great prank. We need to continue to show it at the JAR and to the Gund.Zippy is an image for the kids and the community to embrace and feel good about. A lovable creature who brings joy and is fun loving. Leave him be.
  18. Not sure how close we are with compliance to Title IX. Would have to believe any additions would need to come on the womens side. Or a 2 women's for 1 men's addition if we went with a hockey or wrestling. Most logical for women's sports would be Golf and Field Hockey.
  19. Tom- Nice article. I too would love to see more people at every game. Just let them know that the correct address for the James A. Rhodes Arena is 373 Carroll St.Continue the accurate journalism we have come to expect from the ABJ.
  20. They don't look all that bad for what you can see. As long as they go 6-0 the last six home games, I don't care what they wear.
  21. Currently the travel party is at 16 and growing each day. Looking for 2 dozen. :macc:
  22. To late for the medical reshirt. Injury needed to have occured before the Miami game (ie. the first 1/2 of the season). With an 11 game season scheduled, game 6 starts the second half.
  23. There are no moral victories. We lost by 25. Big Ten (11) team yes. But with 60 minutes of focus and lack of mistakes this is a 7 loss. Add a couple of breaks and we have a 3 point win. Buckle up the chin straps and get back on that practice field and lets get it together. There is no way we should lose this weekend at Mid Tenn.
  24. I totally agree with the board as Steve does have a "here we go again" voice as well as an over excited call at times. But isn't that what makes him "The voice of the Zips". He is a true fan and calls the games from and with his heart. He emotes the same emotions we are feeling. Also, it was game 1 of the season. Give him a little break on the numbers and players.
  25. Yes the Guzetta Hall expansion is under way. Also, as for the Gas Turbine Testing Facility, I believe it may be going into the old visitor parking lot near the railroad tracks by the bend where Carroll and Wolf Ledges meet. I saw new construction there but no signs stating what is being built there.
