$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$When the community stopped supporting the game, Acme stopped underwriting the event. They tried to continue it with Giant Eagle sponsoring the game and tickets but that was unsuccessful. They might be a local company but it is still big business and when the costs outweigh the benefits, you cut your loses.

There are several things I would like to see as part of game days once the stadium opens on campus.1. A Team Walk - The team will probably eat their pre-game meal at the Student Union or Martin Center so it would be a short walk and would get everyone a chance to see the team and get fired up before the game.2. Band and Cheerleaders Pre-game pep rally. I know they try to do that now at the Bowl but it is difficult because everyone is so scattered in the lots. Have it on Lee Jackson in a central spot.3. Bring back a parade and bonfire for Homecoming.4. Not in the tradition category but work with Goodyear to have the blimp up for every home game. You can't tell me a recruit from outside the region or state who doesn't see it regularly wouldn't feel a little extra "big time" atmosphere for the program and campus. Also, get the fresh bread scent cranked up for campus tours of recruits.5. Being in the stadium for kick off. Not trying to knock our students but at times we look like LA fans arriving late and leaving early. Pack the place from kick-off to the final gun.

Game day parking should not be much of an issue if you don't mind a little walk or short bus ride (I'm guessing there will be shuttle buses like other large universities). There is plenty of parking to accomodate the stadium crowds between the lots by EJ and the Polskys's deck as well as the Exchange and Carroll St decks. There is also plenty of flat lots scattered throughout campus. As for other events, I'm certain that athletics will be careful about not scheduling other large events at the JAR on game days.On a side note, in a discussion regarding stadium parking on Friday at the groundbreaking, a trustee stated that they are exploring options for additional decks and will have a parking plan in place for the stadium opening.

The word has been floating around since football season that UA is switching from Adidas to Nike for all programs. Hopefully the announcement will be soon.

As I see it, only 2 negatives came out of this game.1. This season is over.2. With this strong performance on ESPN for all to see, it will be that much harder to get top notch OOC opponets to play us.And as for KD making poor decisions regarding personnel and play designs down the stretch in games, where is the staff that should be watching his back and making sure he isn't missing making the proper substitutions.

My understanding is that the CBI is going to make offers to teams as soon as the NCAA brackets are announced. They are not waiting for the NIT's leftovers. May be some interesting choices for teams especially since the NIT is now run by the NCAA.My opinion is win the tourney and go to the NCAA. Even as a 1 and done, we get the exposure. 10's of millions filling out brackets seeing the name "Akron". Also, Steve French stated this morning that one of his dreams is to call an NCAA tournament game. He already has a bowl game - which I would have bet against occuring before an NCAA tourney.

What does it say about Akron Basketball if....
flipthezip replied to Big Zip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Was it the right move to start all 5 seniors? Yes. Class move by KD. Was it the right move to let them play as long as they did? No. There was a foul on Goddard a little over a minute in that stopped the clock. The substitutions should have been made right there when it was 2-0. Of course the real damage occurred well after all of this when we went nearly 9 minutes scoring only 2 points. -
I am pretty sure that was the tanning salon. They are already moved in to their new location next to the Subway near the corner of Exchange and Spicer. It marks the first demolition of a Zip-Strip property in quite some time, and a great first step to getting the rest of it torn down.It looks like Bob-a-Louie's was knocked down. The tanning salon is that white building to the left still standing - for now. When are they going to start knocking down some of the houses on Nash that are already empty and boarded up. Start sending the message to those hold outs that the end is inevitable.

You're right. They shouldn't be considered the bad guy. But, I think we have let these businesses slide on their responsibilty to the neighborhoods and markets they serve. Clearly the University and community need this new stadium for continued growth and overall pride. These businesses have been offered fair value for their properties as well as ample time to secure alternate locations. While I'm sure the city and University were not the most helpful in finding relocation spots for bars, tatoo parlors, and a head shop, they have been very upfront and straight forward about the stadium plans. What I would hope the city would do is declare the plasma center a neighborhood nusiance and move them out allowing Manny and The Sun to move their places and construct a new multi-use complex there. Both bars, the coffee shop, a restuarant or 2, maybe some shops.

The Roberts and B. McKnight starts were a direct result of the injuries and illnesses. I'm just glad we were able (forced) to do this against a short benched Toledo team. This situation will probably continue for Saturday's game against a weaker EMU team.Yes, KD is quick to pull a player who makes a mistake on the floor. But I think that is more about insuring he has 5 guys on the floor who are all thinking on the same page at the same time.As for letting the hot hand stay in the game, I think that the Dials substitution was just part of the rotation of last nights game. KD clearly will stick with the hot hand as he played MVP Linhart all 40 minutes last night. Great job Nate.

Those pictures do bring back a lot of memories Captain. Including the days when Notre Dame could beat somebody.

Not suprised, but Akron GETTING ABUSED!!!

akronzip12345 must be a doctoral student in arithmatic at Can't. He was able to count all the way to 5. -
All the re-development of small buildings in the world downtown won't allow the city to overcome the problems that keep people from heading down there:1. The Mayflower Hotel and its colorful cast of residents2. The Metro bus line up each evening and its cast of characters3. Real shopping, restaurant, and entertainment options. Look at the large successful areas around - ie. Fairlawn/Montrose, The Strip/Beldin Village.

That is about all we have in common with UCF. They are the 7th largest university(47K+) in the country and have a pretty selective enrollment. They accept less than 50% of their applicants.Average freshman SAT 1200, ACT 26, GPA 3.7Tuition is very reasonable for in state students and establishing Florida residency is pretty easy- 1 year. Lots of jobs in Orlando to get you thru that 1st year.

Great idea. I'll check with my boss and see if he will go along with giving up 80% of our sales.
-
Would love to have just one system to deal with. Unfortunately, will never happen. I am in the fastener business and easily 80% of the nuts, bolts, screws, and washers in your house, cars, and anthing else assembled is in English measurements. Start converting now with new assemblies and construction but manintenace and repair operations would take 40-50 years to phase out english measured parts.

I know everyone wants to play better competition so let's get after scheduling it using our connections. Call down to Cincinnati and Xavier where our former AD's are at and ask to for some help. They were here once facing the same problems with scheduling. And it's not as if these 2 schools are ducking tough OOC opponents.

Yes, the University and campus are different today than it was even 5 years ago. Jeff Boals made note of that in the post game radio show Monday regarding comments made by coaches coming to campus for the Nike and Lebron camps about their surprise regarding how nice it is.So one key should be on getting alumni back to the campus. The new stadium should help draw some out of 1. curiosity, 2. novelty, and 3. to see a local high school game. Oh yeah, and maybe 4. to support their alma mater. Also, maybe some focus should be made on improving the Greek housing. Each Fraternity and Sorority yearly sponsor some type of alumni event with ranging degress of success. New housing would be a boost to these organizations and events in drawing alumni back to campus. How about May Day? I think we are over the parties and/or riots that once were. But why can't we get back to what it was pre-1987 when it was a day of celebration on campus. I know the street festival was tried with little success but something different could work. Maybe similar to a First Night idea - open up the campus, bring in bands and vendors, show off the student successes at the end of the school year.Bring back a parade through campus for Homecoming.Lot's of ideas and probably rambling to long on the wrong thread but something to get kick around. And based on the discussions taking place here, this may be where the impetus for increased alumni involvement comes from.

Negative talk on this board? You make it sound like it is a crime for wanting more.......no expecting more, because that is what we should be doing. Sounds like you want us to sugar coat things. We both want success but you can't get there unless you acknowledge your weaknesses and mistakes. We wanna be big time you gotta act big time, expect big time, but at the very least you should minimize mistake, no holdings, dropped passes, redundant screens, etc. These are all easy fixes!!!!!I remember when Bill Snyder Kansas State's head coach at the time, came into our locker room after we just got our heads kicked in by his team, said that they were once where we are, and to stick to doing the right things, work hard, and not just believe but know you are better than your opponent, don't EVER settle for less.If you are used to a Faust 1-11 season a L.O. 2-10 season saying 7-5 is great is settling, it's settling for good when you should strive to be great. Saying stuff like *in a mopey voice* "Well we were 3-2 at half with OSU and barely lost to Temple, Buffalo, Miami, and Central. We could be 8-4!!Could be 8-4 don't sell tickets, get better recruits, or go to bowl games!!! The teams 8-4 or better like OSU, Indiana, UConn, Central ya know the teams we lost to?!! Go to bowl games, get better recruits, and don't have to fudge ticket sale numbers to keep D1 status. Teams like Louisville, Kansas St. Boise St., Hawaii, stop settling. Like we should too.Actually at many of the major schools, if a coach has too many 8-4 or 9-3 seasons he will be fired.I don't think anyone is asking for a NC or even a top 20 team. We are merely asking for a respectable and entertaining team to watch. We are asking for a team that consistently beats the teams they should beat. Yes, there are upsets. However, there isn't usually 4-5 the same season. Once that happens, they aren't upsets. Here at Akron most of us would be happy with 8-4 and crazy about 9-3. I don't think that being negative because we aren't even a 500 team is a bad thing unless you are used to losing and accept it.We finished 2005 at 7-6 after the bowl game. Everyone called that a great year for Akron.........Talk about being happy with mediocrity. If any national powers had consecutive 7-6 seasons, the coach would be gone in a heartbeat. Here at Akron we are happy about it.7-6 should be a down year/rebuilding year at UA. Not a good year. I couldn't believe early in the year when people called this a rebuilding year. What?????????????????????????????????? Did we go 8-4 or better last year? Did we win the MAC?How can you have a rebuilding year after a year that you were not very good? That is a losers mentality. We really need to change that. I am not calling for JD's head. He is a young coach that I think is learning on the job. Many great coaches took more than 5 years before they started winning. To call out posters and say they are being negative is absurd. If you want to see negative, go to other teams boards that are whining because they only beat a team by 21 points when they think it should have been more. Or they lose one game and are calling for a coordinators head. Not all negative talk is bad. Some of it is reality.THANK YOU BUCKZIP!! Finally some speaking with some sanity!!!!Who doesn't want to win 8 or 9 games a year at Akron on a consistent basis? All I hear nowadays is that college football is all about recruiting. Actually, college football is all about scheduling. Until the MAC and Rick Chryst gets his head out of his *** and stops playing big ten teams and we build relationships with the other non-bcs conferences and play ONE BCS school a year and 3 NON-bcs schools a year, nothing much will change for any MAC school-expect 6-8 wins a year and then 5 or 6 wins the next year.Speaking of scheduling, just check out the country's top 5 frickin programs......Going into the weekend, only Georgia, I believe, has played a top 20 schedule. tosu's wasn't in the top 50, WVA was barely inside the top 50 and at one point Kanas was outside the top 75.Yet all these teams will be rewarded and then some. Mythical NC will ring completely true for the eventual winner this year. NOTE HERE - The individual schools schedule their own out of conference games - not the MAC or commissioner. If you are unhappy with our current schedule - take it up with the boys in Cincinnati. These current OOC games were scheduled 3-4 years ago. Hopefully Mac is scheduling some challenging but winnable match ups for the new stadium. Either way, we still probably will need to schedule a BCS team per year to help with recruiting and the paycheck.recruitimng

Was speaking to Hunter yesterday at the RB and he said we will have 5 home games next year.

Maybe he has watched to much Ace Ventura - Pet Detective and thinks he is suppose to have the laces out.

This promotion will never work in Oxford.I'm sure the sweaters follow the rule of not wearing white after Labor Day.
-
First, let me say that I am generally happy with JD at the moment. He is developing a program that should be ready to compete at the top of the MAC at the same time we move into the new stadium. If it does not happen and the plug is pulled, my vote would be for an Akron man. And let me be the first to throw out the name of Bobby Johnson. Currently he is at Indiana as OL coach and running game coordinator. He is from Akron - Hoban. Played in the MAC at Miami and coached there (Cradle of Coaches). GA at Akron. Wife is also from Akron.

That NIU number is skewed / inflated due to them opening at Soldier Field against Iowa in a home game.
