I was embarrassed to see that. Knowing that was an issue, and with the weather, they should've just moved the game into the fieldhouse.

I forgot how much we really got screwed at the end of that game. That was almost an amazing comeback. NOBODY was offsides on that fumble. Even without that fumble, Paris McNeal should've had that last onside kick, it deflected off the Memphis player and bounced right to him. He didn't lay throw his whole body in there the way the Memphis player did. Oh well, what might have been! I'd love for Classic to show either the '04 Marshall game or the '06 NC State game sometime. Both were ESPN games if I remember correctly.

Zips still using outdoor practice field?
InTheZone replied to InTheZone's topic in Akron Zips Football
Anyone who has gone thnt rough winter workouts and spring practice knows tonight will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, party night for the football team. Bigger than the last game of the season. Workouts during the season are a cakewalk compared to what the players have to go through in the winter and spring. I hear that. Guys will be drinking their faces off tonight. My one and only "trip downtown" in my life came the night follwing the spring game. Team was having a HUGE party on Brown, nobody was in their right mind or had been since around 4 PM. There were teammate's dads there reliving their glory days who had lost the ability to stand since about 2 hours after the game. Well long story short, Akron's "finest" showed up when some of the partying had spilled out to the street and from the yard I saw one of the officers giving a female friend of mine a hard time. Being the fine gentleman that I am, I proceeded to walk over to the officer and tell him that he was a f***'n prick and a pussy and to leave little girls alone. He then asked me if he could see some ID for that Natural Light in my hand. I defiantly produced my ID and shoved it in his face. Only problem was my ID said I was 19 . The fine gentleman seemed intent on only giving me a citation, until I told him to f*** off, and that I was an Akron football player (it's funny how when you're a freshman you think that actually means something). It was then that he decided cuffs and a trip to jail was in order. -
The quick and dirty: -Wasn't all that impressed with Nicely. He has a nice arm but has accuracy issues and struggles in his ability to make the correct reads and get the ball off. While this could somewhat be expected of a young QB, I was hoping he'd be farther along at this point. No wonder Ianello isn't handing him the job yet. -Alex Allen looks fully healthy and ready to close out his career spanning over more than half the decade in a big way. - The offensive line looks night and day better than last year, at least the first unit. Their footwork in pass protection was solid (yea I watch those kinds of things, I'm a nerd), they were getting out of their stance quicker and looked more forceful at the point of attack. Browning has done a great job this spring. - Shawn Lemon has found a natural home in the 4-3. Look for big things out of him in '10.

At least you were inside. There could've been tornadoes whirling around the Rubber Bowl and ole Lee O wouldn't have called practice. I can remember lightening striking all around us multiple times and Owens acting like he didn't even notice. Winter conditioning on the hardwood of Memorial and the JAR were a real treat too. My joints still ache from thousands of updowns on that damn floor. -
Zips still using outdoor practice field?

They played on grass once last year (Penn State) and will play twice this year (Kentucky, Temple). The MAC title game is on artificial turf as well. Seems like the 50 yard practice field is fine for the frequency of play on natural grass. It's impossible to run a college football practice with over 100 guys on a 50 yard field, individual drills would be impossilbe, not to mention the kickers need a place to practice, and being that we have no goal posts on the grass space, that's impossible. If there's one position where practice on grass before a game on grass is an absolute must, it's kicking, and right now they have nowhere to do that. I've seen them practice kicking from the grass before. It's not that big of a deal. As far as "not enough room for a 100 guys", I would beg to differ. I can't even believe you're still on this topic. The practice facilities that we have access to are excellent, and all facilities have more use than just Varsity athletics. Are you joking?? You really think a 50 yard field is big enough to run a FULL TEAM practice??? It's a tight squeeze with different position groups running into each other's drills with a 100 yard field!! Most programs and all NFL teams have TWO outdoor fields for this very purpose, and the offense and the defense each take a 100 yard field. You do realize how many position groups there are that need space for individual drills don't you? QB's, RB's, OL, WR's, TE's sometimes split off, DL, LB's, Corners, and Safeties. You've obviously never played college football. A hundred yard field is a tight squeeze. A 50 yard field would be impossible. All I'm saying is that we built multi-million dollar facilities and didn't include a grass practice field, a standard of all college programs. Hell, Can't State has 3 of them. Find me one other school with facilities like ours that doesn't have a grass practice field. Heck, I bet every other school even in our crap conference has a grass practice field, regardless of what the quality of their facilities. Whether you think it will or not, the fact is is that it will make a difference when we play grass teams. Are you kidding me? We have an indoor facility, an outdoor facility (2 practice fields) an all weather game day surface (3 areas to practice) and a grass practice field (4 areas). I'm pretty sure you're aware that warm up drills can be run anywhere. You need the grass practice field (which we have) to practice kicking and run Team O and Team D for the whopping 2 games a year we play on grass. Not only that but you also have the infield of the track that you can use (5 areas). Unbelievable. You just want things to complain about I think. Trying to build in excuses. This isn't the old days, there is barely any difference between prograss (artificial surface) and real grass anymore. And like Zach said, the Rubber Bowl practice facilities also still exist (8 areas to practice, 5 grass 3 artificial). Individual drills are not warmups, they're probably the most important part of practice. That was an incredibly ignorant statement. And practice in the infield of the track complex, Really?? Number one, it isn't lined. Harshmarks are incredibly important to things like alignment and you're basically wasting your time trying to practice without them. Number two, there's a nice long hard surface running down the middle of it for pole vaulting. I'm sure that would make for some interesting injuries. Incredibly ignorant statement number two. There's a no difference between prograss and grass?? Ignorant statement three. I've played on both partner, I'm not THAT old. And there's a huge difference, grass sets the game at a different speed than turf not to mention its a different running on it and making cuts. It throws off everything from QB-WR timing to running backs footwork to the ability of defensive lineman to make pass rush moves. You wouldn't understand what I'm talking about unless you've played a college football game on both surfaces, but it makes a HUGE difference, and our players should be able to practice on grass before they have to play on it. The bottom line is all college teams have grass practice facilities. We built a multi-million dollar practice facility, and don't. The fields out at the Rubber Bowl are no longer kept in practice caliber condition (not that they really were to begin with, but that's beside the point...), and the fact that we would even have to think about bussing to the rubber bowl with as much money as we've spent on facilities is ridiculous. It was a stupid decision to change the original plans, and now we're landlocked and have no options correct it. Thus, we have a multi-million dollar practice facility that puts us up shit creek when we're playing a team on grass. Stupendous. -

How about we worry about our kickers getting good on turf first. Let's not waste our time worrying about kicking on grass until we make our extra pts every time on turf. I can't disagree with that unfortunately. -

What if he never figures it out? Almost to my thirties, I am just now fully realizing how much I enjoy chicken wings and beer. I want to fully realize my potential before it is too late. Nice. In my mid 30's and realize wings and beer are IT....nothing more to see here...that's it...oh yeah, boobs are nice too...enjoy. My wish is sometime soon the Zips play YSU and end this pointless discussion. Zips would win 9 out of 10 games played against YSU. I would be highly upset with 9 out of 10. There is no excuse for us not to win 10 out of 10. That was just a hypothetical scenario guys.....dont be specific..... ok ok Zips would beat YSU ANYTIME they played each other...BETTER? GOOD. I wouldn't go that far boys. Once again, you are vastly overspeculating the difference between teams in a crap 1-A conference such as our own and FCS teams. Sure, YSU hasn't been that good in the past couple of years, and most years we're going to have a better team, but in a given year that we're down, and they're up, they can certainly beat us, and history shows that (just ask GP1 ). I guarantee you that about half of the FCS playoff teams from last year would've beaten us.

Right, and I think that's fine, but my only concern is in weeks where we play on the road at a "grass team", there's nowhere for this team to practice on grass (and yes, for those of you who have never played, the feel of grass and even field turf is very different, and when all you've gotten used to is playing on turf for the whole year and offseason, playing on grass can have a weird feel to it that our team should have the opportunity to get used to before gameday). -

They could've still built the softball stadium where the turf field is now and put the entrance to the eventual "all sports plaza" on the OTHER side which would've been incredibly convenient being right next to multiple parking garages and all. I just think it was kind of silly to put a practice field that far away from the fieldhouse. The original plans called for 2 hundred yard fields, one turf and one grass, right up next to the fieldhouse, and this would've been great for both soccer and football, as it would've been basically connected to the football locker room and and a whole heckuva lot closer to the soccer lockerroom in the JAR. Poor poor planning if you ask me. You must be awfully lazy. If you think walking a very short par 4 to a field is "inconvenient". I'm just saying it could've been done better and it was supposed to be done better. That's like if you owned a large piece of property and wanted to put a pool in your back yard, but you built the pool "a short par 4" away from your house instead of right out your back door. Is it a horrible walk? no. Is it an inconvenience that makes no sense? Yes. -

Just wondering, since I haven't gotten over to watch practice since the stadium was completed. From what I've seen, all the team's outdoor practices have been at the new stadium. If that's the case, that outdoor field half a mile away from the field house was the biggest waste of money ever. I never really understood why they didn't build the outdoor practice field on the spot the original plans called for, which is where the softball stadium is now. They could've put a grass practice field there, gated it off so as to connect it to the field house, and we would truly have an all inclusive first rate practice facility. They could've put the softball stadium where they put the practice field. As it is, we wasted money on a field halfway across campus that the team never uses because it's easier just to walk to the stadium.

Effort There, Execution Not So Much....Yet
InTheZone replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
With new coaching staffs comes new opportunities. Guys that weren't even given looks and written off as scout team fodder under the old regime are evaluated the same as everyone else and sometimes those guys show that they deserve a look. That's the thing with new coaching staffs... guys looking for a chance love them, and guys who feel like they already proven themselves and are entitled to something hate them. That seems to be the feeling coming out of some of our "insiders" on this board about some of last year's "leaders" feeling like they're being disrespected. -
Zips sign Deangelo Williams
InTheZone replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
did they sign him or is he going to be a walk on. seems very small for that position, and his speed isnt very good either. His 40, broad jump, short shuttle, and 3 cone are all awful. And he has no size whatsoever. Reminds me of a great movie quote... "You're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for 2 years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen. Now go on back." Let's hope this guy is just a natural football player who had some bad combines. Or let's hope he busts his balls and provides a great look on the scout team for the next 5 years. That looks to be his role. -
Now your getting it. For comparison's sake, it would help if they played for the same team in the same era, but I'll let you slide for the point of illustration. Okay, I can do that too. The goal of every season at the University of Tennessee is to win the national championship. Tee Martin 1, Peyton Manning 0. Tee Martin > Petyon Manning for the same reasons that Luke Getsy > Charlie Frye.
-
What's the goal of every season? Win the MAC Championship. Getsy 1, Frye 0 Don't get me wrong here, I love Frye, but Getsy got the job done. Rationalize away. What's the goal of every NFL season? To win the Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer 1, Dan Marino 0. By your rationale, Trent Dilfer > Dan Marino.
-
Now we are making excuses for winning? Zips fans, we rule! It's not an excuse, it's just a fact. We won the MAC with a 5-3 MAC record and a lot of tiebreakers. Two of the MAC East's best teams were gone. We won the MAC that year by the rules and fair and square, but for the sake of this argument you cannot take that and say it shows that Luke Getsy was superior to Charlie Frye. The facts just don't back you up. The year before, Charlie Frye, with a new head coach and a brand new system, had gone 6-2 in the MAC, against a much stronger MAC East.
-
Charlie Frye as a Junior and Senior 2003: 273/421 (64.8%) for 3549 yards and 22 TD vs. 9 INT. 111 carries for 288 yards and 7 TD Record: 7-5 (5-3) 2004: 220/346 (63.6%) for 2623 yards and 18 TD vs. 8 INT. 100 carries for 446 yards and 2 TD. Record 6-5 (6-2) Luke Getsy as a Junior and Senior 2005: 278/525 (53.0%) for 3455 yards 23 TD vs. 12 INT. 56 carries for -9 yards and 1 TD Record: 7-6 (5-3) 2006: 199/380 (52.4%) for 2662 yards 18 TD vs. 11 INT. 58 carries for -142 yards and 0 TD Record: 5-7 (3-5) So whether you go by any stats category, Total wins, or MAC wins.... Charlie comes out on top. Make your argument.
-
Until Getsy hit the field you are correct, once that happened, it was Charlie-WHO? 1. Getsy 2. Frye Getsy's best season was 7-6 and 5-3 in the MAC. Same as Charlie's. His stats were worse. The man barely completed 50 percent of his passes. His senior year, he led the team to a very "winner-like" record of 5-7. Charlie was drafted in the 3rd round. Luke was not drafted and cut as a free agent. Both were good QB's for us, but I don't think the facts support you in saying that Luke was the better QB. His MAC championship happened because he was the very fortunate benefactor of circumstances and a very weakened MAC East with Marshall and UCF gone and Miami on the decline. I mean we lost to Ball State that season for craps sake.
-
Luck? Isn't there a saying that goes something like this, "If it wasn't for bad luck, he would have had no luck at all." C'mon GP, I know your disdain for Frye, but can you honestly look this board in the screen and tell them that any first year coach wouldn't be jizzing himself to inherit a QB coming off a 273/421 (64.8%) for 3549 yards and 22 TD, 111 carries for 288 yards and 7 TD, season?? I know Robby I. would. I would agree if the guy wasn't a career loser. Stats are one thing, winning is another. The man led the number 6 offense in the nation. There's not much more he could've done in my book. His defense was near the bottom of 1-A football, and couldn't stop a fruitfly. You know of any other QB's in our 1-A history that put 500 yards of total offense on a Big 10 team, and a good one at that? The thing I remember most about Charlie Frye's teams, and a few of my teams at that, is that we would score and score and it wouldn't matter... we could count on the defense to let the other team score more. Let's remember that Luke Getsy's MAC Championship squad also had the 26th ranked defense to go along with it, and still went 7-6 with that. If we've had a winner at QB in the 1-A era, it was Charlie Frye.

Devoe Torrence is better than any YSU running back there or coming. Regardless he is a linebacker first and foremost and eventually will figure that out. Also, I dont see him as this "bum" as some people are calling him. He is a tremendous talent that just hasn't got his chance to shine, like i said, when he figures out what his true position is he will be a star. Same thing I was thinking. There is no way YSU has any running backs anywhere near as talented as him... I can't help but laugh when someone comes around here and tries to act like YSU is so superior to akron. Trust me the worst players on Akron's team would be stars for the penguins... I don't know if I would go that far... I think we've seen in the last few seasons that the difference between FBS and FCS isn't as great as we'd all like to believe, and Akron right now is a bad FBS team. Certainly, our talent level is superior, but there are guys at YSU that would see significant time here, and there are probably a few bums on our roster that would be bums on their's just the same.

Might as well inject some politics into this dead section of the board. So where does the Zipsnation stand on the hottest political issue of the day?
