i'm going to have to apologize to the board for pimping CJ11 earlier this year and making people believe that he was going to develop into something. i simply recognized that he was the better of the two cj's (which he definately is) and i really wanted to believe that jd and staff had been competent enough to recruit at least one guy in the past four years that would be able to take over and lead this team at qb. unfortunately i overestimated both cj11 and this coaching staff.
-
i've watched both cj's in a couple of games and those kids are terrible. they should have no chance of ever playing at akron, but unfortunately offensive guru jd brookhart has no idea how to recruit. please leave the evaluation of talent to the men on this board who have played the game sweetheart.
-
sgm should've been banned from the board a long time ago. he's an f'n moron, and he's not even a zips fan, he a suckeye fan even though he's never attended the school.
-
I've seen enough. That was absolutely pathetic. He has lost this team.
-
JD lost a lot of my respect when he took the route of recruiting thugs that nobody else wanted. It seems that he had one set of rules for some guys, and another set of rules for others, and nothing will tear a team apart faster. He tried to clean house this offseason and even admitted to that mistake, but it's too late. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Zips graduation levels get back down to the rates of the Faust era. Many of the problem players may be gone (definately not all of them), but their effect on the teammates that they influenced remains. Jackson seems to be a guy that fell in with the wrong crowd in his class and is a cancer cell on the team. JD can't give a guy with an attitude and discipline problem the throne of leadership on the team, and inherently thats what the QB position is.
-
I'll give JD until the end of the season to prove something....ANYTHING.... but if I had to make a snap judgement right now over what we've seen then I'd say it's time to clean house. JD has had four years to improve on what his predecessor did and has been given every advantage that that guy didn't have, and nothing has changed. Why waste another year with a staff that has been outcoached in the MAC time and time again when we're getting ready to head into a new stadium and are going to need the community behind us?? If we don't at least split these last 4 then Mack and Proenza need to show JD and company the door.

Sadly, Carlton Jackson's not the answer GP1. He's an idiot with the football, he's a discipline problem with a horrible attitude, and he's not respected by anyone on the team. I don't think there are any answers because JD's recruited a bunch of rivals all-stars who have never found their way to the classroom or the field, and a bunch of guys who do well at combines but can't run a simple offensive or defensive scheme and just flat out aren't good football players. People talk about how JD doesn't recruit those slow unathletic suburban kids like LO used to. Well hell I'll take a Chase Blackburn, JOHN MACKEY, Charlie Frye, Domenik Hixon, Jay Rohr, Brian White, Ryan Myers, John Fuller, etc. etc. etc. anyday over what we've got on the field right now.
-
Alright, I wanted to give JD more time, I really did, but I am GODDAMN SICK OF THIS SHIT. I am sick and tired of watching pathetic football week in and week out. I love a lot of the guys on this team but JD has them playing with no heart at all.... and I don't care what the hell rivals and scout.com say JD's recruiting as been AWFUL. There's no way in hell you can tell me that this team full of JD's recuits has more talent than the '03 team. Wasn't that the big disclaimer at the beginning.... "OH MAN!!! JD's winning now with LO's recruits, wait till the team is full of his own!!" Well now this team is full of his own and this team blows. I can't take it anymore. I know a lot of people within the athletic department and I'm going to start voicing my opinion that its time for JD to get out of here and Mack to bring in his own guy.

Based on what?? Our awesome attendance and fan support or raging success on the field?I don't want to be a smart ass or a pessimist, but let's be realists. We have nothing more to offer to a BCS conference right now than the Buffalos or Eastern Michigans of the world. Our program is stuck in a rut of going nowhere right now.

if zippy loses this week, should we get a new mascot?
InTheZone replied to zippyrifle32's topic in Akron Zips Football
The current CC also has a lot better material and equipment to work than the previous CC!! NO EXCUSES!!! -
NC State is in the ACC. They drew 56,000 fan to the Akron game. 56,000!! We drew 7,000 butts-in-seats for Temple last week.OSU drew 105,000 for it's game against Akron. Their ticket prices average 20X what an Akron game ticket costs. Programs like NC State, and to a larger extent OSU, are dripping with money. Their stadium upgrades cost twice what our entire new stadium will cost! They don't recruit, they select.Akron beat NC State, who's grad assistants makes as much money as JD.Akron played OSU within 18 points. Ans the disparity between OSU's football resources and Akron's is similar to my salary vs. Bill Gates'.That's not impressive? That's a guy that should be fired? Gheeeez...Is JD perfect? No. Was the Temple collapse boardeline unforgivable? It was close. But if you ride JD for that loss, then where's the anger towards Dambrot for the Miami collapse? A 7-point lead with 2 minutes remaining? And we blow it? I guess JD just isn't that "loveable?"In the big picture, JD appears to have the program going in the right direction. To blow off his MAC championship as "luck" is ridiculous. To harp on his recruiting mistakes, while giving no credit to the quality players he's brought to Akron is self-serving. It is funny that, in mid season, all you heard from Indian's fans was grousing about Shapiro not picking up quality free agents..that Dolan wouldn't spend the money to be competitive...that Wedge was a boob. The Tribe is 1 game away from the World Series, and where are those guys now? They just sit and wait for the team to fail, so they can say "I TOLD YOU SO." Just like last week...the JD haters disappeared. Then the Zips lose, and the haters return. As predictable as an OSU fan's response to "O-H."All of you are welcome to post after the Buffalo game. But if we win, I can easily predict who will post, and who will disappear...until the next loss.Everything you just said could've been used to defend Lee Owens before he was fired....Oh....in his second year he came within three points of Virginia Tech.... their facilities are miles ahead of ours (especially back then!!)Oh....the Zips only lost to those mighty Buckeyes who hand select their players by 14 points (not 18).....Oh.... the Zips beat a top 25 team!! (has JD done that yet?)Oh.... the Zips won the MAC East!!!Oh.... the Zips went 7-5, 5-3 (but unfortunately that wasn't good enough to win the MAC that year.... it was good enough to send a coaching staff packing)Oh.... Lee Owens is bringing in some great talent!! (I think we forget some of the great players that Lee Owens did somehow convince to come to a school that looked like an NYC slum.... and how many of them actually were able to keep their grades up for all 4 years...to think!!)The point is not to say Lee O shouldn't have been fired, but that JD has not progressed this program at all since he's gotten here, and the facts back that up. It's still the same ole Akron Zips, and like I've said before, he's got a lot more to recruit with and develop players with than previous coaches ever did... he's got all the advantages (a completely recreated, beautiful campus, one of the best practice facilities in the nation, and a new stadium on the way...) JD has not shown that he can take this program anywhere that it hasn't been before, and if he doesn't show it by next season, then I say it's time to get somebody in here who will... especially as we take the next step with an oncampus stadium.
-
Let's all remember that JD was not hired by Mack and is not Mack's guy, so this is not out of the realm of possibility if the Zips go into the tank. What are some thoughts?4 Seasons prior to JD2000: 6-5 (5-1) 2001: 4-7 (4-4) 2002: 4-8 (3-5) 2003: 7-5 (5-3) TOTAL: 21-25 (17-13)JD's First 4 Seasons2004: 6-5 (6-2) 2005: 7-6 (5-3) 2006: 5-7 (3-5)2007: 3-4 (2-2)TOTAL: 21-22 (16-12)Excuse me if I'm not impressed. It may anger some of you to hear this.... but we've really seen no improvement whatsoever from Lee Owens to JD Brookhart.... and JD Brookhart has a helluva lot more to pitch Akron with to recruits than ole Lee O ever did. Not saying Lee O was the greatest coach in the history of College Football.... but if you're objective neither is JD Brookhart. I say give him one more year to make some progress after this season and if not then.... BUH-BYE.

Compare CJ-11 with numbers of other Zip QB's of the past:Butchie Washington's passer ratings year-by-year:2000: 82.16Charlie Frye's passer ratings year-by-year2001: 82.432002: 91.162003: 99.762004: 94.36Luke Getsy's passer ratings year-by-year2005 (MAC CHAMPIONS): 78.712006: 78.64
-
Doing the calculation of Chris Jacquemain's passer rating after 6 games as our starting QB using the NFL formula (which most of us are more familiar with), CJ-11's rating comes out to an 87.79. Not bad for a guy in his first year of starting and working with a lot of new faces on offense.I think if we give Jac time, he's going to develop into a very good QB for us. I said back at the end of last fall when everyone was all over CJ-7 as being our next big thing that I thought Jacquemain was better and would end up winning the starting job. He's just got a cool, calm collectiveness about him that I think a good QB must have and he has leadership qualities that CJ-7 has never and will never posess. And oh yeah, he's got a pretty accurate arm as well.... much better than Luke Getsy's in my opinion. Give him some patience this year and I think by the end of the year you'll all agree with me.

You're an idiot. Every single one of your posts try's to slide in some point about YSU being on par with Akron (which is an absolute slap in the face to any Zip fan) and then you try to cover your ass at the end of the post with some stupid compliment. If I was a moderator I would ban you, because you bring absolutely nothing to this board. If Akron played YSU it would be a five touchdown win. Your football program is small-time, your school, city, and campus are hideous, and you aren't on our level or anywhere close to it. Stop trolling and get lost.
-
Well it's not Brion Stokes it's Doug Williams, who came to UA as a d-end, but your point is taken about Rasor.
-
It's too late in the season to start making that drastic of a change in the schematics of your offense. If they didn't think we had a good pocket passer, then they should've tailored the offense to what we have in the offseason. We've got to go with what's been hammered into place in the spring and fall camp now.
-
A 6th year of eligibility of Mackey would be great. Of course, that would mean one more year until JD is through with all of those horrible Lee Owens recruits .
-
The Zips do have a sub package which is a 4-3. Their base set as most of us know is a 3-3-5 stack look, but a look that the Zips have and is used quite often is a four man front look where the Bandit goes down on the line and one of the ends (Tackle on the depth chart) shades over to a 3 technique. The nose shades to a one and the other end is in a five. The Rover comes down to what would be an outside linebacker position in a typical 4-3. So the 4-3 is already incorporated into the Zips defense if you watch the game closely.... I seriously doubt that they'll use it more now though.
-
You've got to remember that high school kickers are allowed to kick field goals off two inch blocks. That adds 10-15 yards onto kicks, so numbers are always inflated, and that's why a lot of these kids that look like they can kick it like Jason Elam are only 2 star players and don't turn out to be all that great of kickers when they have to kick the ball off the ground (see Igor).
-
I hate rooting for the Flushes.... but I am.Jarvis and Edelman are running wild, Edelman is throwing the ball well.
-
I said last spring that Jaq should be the starting QB. Jackson is a selfish player, unreliable off the field, and does stupid things with the ball.... none of which you want in a QB, the leader of your offense and a guy who does more than just throw the ball, he sets the entire attitude of the offense in the huddle. Glad to see you in the Jaq camp CK, he's our best chance to win. I've got to agree with you on Merce Poindexter as well.... he should be the starting TE. He's a much better reciever than Kasparek and despite Kasparek's size, he's not a physical blocker at all so I'd say the two are a push in that regard. Poindexter-Kasperek makes for nice two tight end sets but I think Poindexter is definately the top TE.

I don't know if "beast" is the right word for Shawn Lemon. I mean the kid is 220 lbs soaking wet. Extremely quick and agile yes, and that's what is going to make him valuable in pass rush situations. I don't think he can be an every down player in the Zips 3 man front unless he puts on about 30 lbs. You absolutely cannot take the chance of having him line up to the tight end side in a running situation, because he will see double teams and be blown off the ball every time, and teams will pull the guard around and run power all day long. Given that the Zips line their d-ends up based off bench and field, there's no way to ensure that Lemon isn't to the tight end side. I have a feeling he'll see most of his minutes on 3rd and longs this year and hopefully Dan Bailey and the strength staff can get some weight on him.

Anybody know when camp starts this year?? Since I no longer live in the Akron area I've found myself out of the loop on such matters even as small as this and I'd really like to make it up for a few practices.

Well what else is there to do in Youngstown on a Saturday night?..... I mean, besides getting shot
