No, they were both invited to an open tryout for area players that the Browns usually conduct as a PR move right after the draft. Not to belittle those guys, but they aren't getting one of the Browns 30 draft workouts lol. Some guys have taken this opportunity and made good with it though, and its been a positive experience for many former Zips in the past.

Well if his 2 mil was only going to go towards giving scholarships to "gays, lesbians, and transgendered" students, then I can't exactly say I'm disappointed that all those scholarships will now be going to Can't. Something tells me those kids would fit in a lot better there anyways...

People underestimate the dependency of the 3-3-5 on defensive lineman who can wreak havoc. The d-lineman in this system don't make many tackles per say, but they are depended upon to make PLAYS all day by getting penetration and requiring attention from mulitple blockers. Ryan Bain will certainly require the attention of mulitple blockers, which is going to free up our LB's to make plays all day. Kevin Grant should take him out for a steak dinner after every game.

Still don't know if this will get him drafted, but he'll get a look in camp from somebody for sure.

So who are we going to open the new stadium with? I'm confused.

Even though Long wasn't an Owens recruit, he was probably still influenced by the amount of Owens recruits that he played with early on in his career moving on to Ashland. Also, if you really look at it, if your a D1 Ohio guy looking to remain instate and transfer down to a scholarship program, what are your options really? There's YSU, which is a good program but has a horrible campus and location, there's Findlay, who's God-awful, there's Tiffin, who has horrible facilities and doesn't compete at a high level in D2, and then there's Ashland, who sits at the top of a D2 power conference, is a private school with a beautiful campus, and is opening brand new football facilities in 2009. I think we'll probably continue to see guys who want out of Akron going down there, even though Lee Owens old recruiting pool has now run dry.

Jabari Arthur - not invited to combine
InTheZone replied to ZipGrad93's topic in Akron Zips Football
No, Hixon didn't get an invite, and was still a 4th round selection. Does JA have the same ability as Hix to blow away the scouts at AU's pro day and raise his stock? We'll see. -
yeah, go blaze it up and look at some porn...You're a solid piece of life :rolleyes:The Odd Corner is not the kind of business that we should want around the University or in it's vicinity... I don't know why anyone would feel sorry for a guy who makes a profit off of ruining people's minds and lives.

InfoCision Stadium - Residence Hall demolition pics

There's some vodka-throwup stained carpet somewhere in that rubble... -
No, they've done this for quite a while now with football and basketball and nobody ever shows up. It ends up being the players and cheerleaders talking to each other for a little bit, eating the free food themselves, and leaving.

Good ole Brown St dorm.... a lot of memories from my freshman year and many august camps in that place.

Wow GP1. That hardly deserves a response it's so idiotic. Since others already took care of you, I'll respond to skip-zips statement that our 4-8 record was somehow the fault of Owens final class. So you think that John Mackey, Jabari Arthur, and Mike Schepp were what was wrong with this year's team? I'd say they were about the only thing that was right. And since some of you seem to think there's more talent on the team now then any of Owen's teams, let's just compare Owens final team with some of JD's studs on this team.Offense:QB-2003: Charlie Frye2007: Chris JacquemainAdvantage: LOL... I think I'd give this one to the Owens guyRB-2003: Bobby Hendry2007: Bryan WilliamsAdvantage: Bobby was great, but we'll give this one to JD, even though he didn't recruit WilliamsFB-2003: Dan Basch2007: Joe TuzzeAdvantage: OwensTE-2003: Mike Brake2007: Merce PoindexterAdvantage: OwensWR-2003: Matt Cherry2007: Stephon FuquaAdvantage: LOL.... OwensWR-2003: Nick Sparks2007: Alphonso OwenAdvantage: LOL.... OwensWR-2003: Miquel Irvin2007: Brandon WilliamsAdvantage: LOL.... OwensOffensive Line: Wow.... The offensive line's Owens recruited make JD's recruits look like little boys, and 2003 was no exception.Advantage: OwensIf I remember correctly, that '03 offense finished 6th in the country. When any of JD's talent filled teams break 80, please let me know.Like I've said before, I'll give Brookhart one more year, but from my view he's done nothing but take the program down since he's been here, despite being given every institutional advantage his predecessor never had.

Come on my fellow Zips fans, we can't expect the Beacon to cover our Zips if we the diehards don't even know what's going on. Etienne quit in the middle of the season. From what I heard at the time, like a lot of those great quality recruits JD went down and got out of Florida, he quit because he didn't like getting yelled at. CJ7 thought he was better and more important than he was, and he's another cancer cell that this team will be better without. You know many on this board talked about we should just wait and see how great Akron was going to be once he weeded out Lee Owen's recruits. Well.... as it turns out, the only success JD's ever had has been with LO's recruits, and now he's stuck with a problem of having to weed out his own recruits: all the cancer cells he brought in '05 and '06. The fact of the matter is JD walked into a great situation at Akron with a lot of talented players and brand new facilities and he has dug his own grave trying to take shortcuts.

and we thought Dwight smith was a good guy...
InTheZone replied to timmyboy's topic in Akron Zips Football
Dwight wasn't exactly a choir boy in his akron days either. I know we all complain about the local media's lack of coverage of Akron sports, but trust me, it has its advantages, especially with the lot JD's brought in since he's been here. -
Fleming has a pretty checkered past as a head coach, and with the way our D has performed this year, I doubt he gets a look anywhere but at the hs level if he isn't at Akron.
-
Considering the source, I highly doubt any of that is true.
-
Really?? Did you play D1 football in college? Last time I checked, girls didn't play football.

I actually think Mack may fire him this year. Say what you will about his leadership style, but from my encounters with him he seems like he's got some balls. I don't think he and JD have ever been on bad terms, but they certainly aren't as cozy as JD and the previous AD. If Mack wants to move on in the sports world, he's got to do something bold and make an impact. As long as JD is still here, even if he wins, the previous AD is still going to get the credit for hiring him. If Mack can get the okay from Proenza (big if), I think he cans JD in the coming weeks.
-
The school would not have to pay the remainder of the contract if jd got another job, which I think he would. He wouldn't just sit around on his butt for two years and collect from the university, especially considering he wouldn't be getting any benefits and he has three children who would need medical coverage. People are making a huge deal out of paying off his contract, but I don't think we'd even have to.

I'd like to hear more. What luck? What so-so play calling brough us back from 20 points down in the fourth quarter? Please expand.I would challenge you to find any other season in the history of the MAC (prior to these stupid divisional games rules) when a team went 5-3 in the conference and won the championship. Heck JD's predecessor got fired for going 5-3 in the MAC. We had a three way tie at the top of the East and because of some third tier tie breaker got in. We depended on the failures of other teams and a few back of the books rules. In a court of law, if the Zips were charged with Championship by luck in 2005, it'd be pretty hard to acquit. JD's regime has some very scary parallels to the Faust era. Some early success with the previous coaches recruits, he goes out and recruits a bunch of thugs who can't find their way to the classroom, our graduation rate plummets, and the program sinks further than it was before. JD is actually pretty good friends with Faust and consults with him often. How ironic .

John Mackey defines Zip football. Or at least, he should be what defines Zip football. I'm going to truly miss watching that young man and his classmates. I many not renew my season tickets next season unless some drastic action is taken in the offseason to right this sinking ship because without Mackey, Corner, Schepp, etc this team has no leadership (including the coaches) and is doomed for worse than what we saw this year.
-
We lost 35-32. We gave up almost 700 yards on defense and the only bright spot on offense was once again Brian Williams. We had a two touchdown lead and completely crumbled.
-
Hell.... Lee Owen's Ashland team just finished off a top 25 season with the #1 offense in the country. I went out to watch them play Wayne St to visit with many of my old coaches and sadly ole LO's offense looked more talented than the Zips. That's a freakin D2 team boys. Brookhart has got to go. Joe Moorhead and Jim Flemming have to go at the very least. I don't give a damn who's calling the plays, as long as it isn't any of those three.

Here's to a class of guys who has given their all for the Zips the past five seasons, playing for a staff that didn't recruit them and that they didn't come to Akron to play for. If not for the incompetence of that staff, they might have had a lot more success here than they did. No one can question the heart of guys like John Mackey, Jabari Arthur, Mike Schepp, Yamari Dixon, Chevin Pace, Kris Kasparek, and Reggie Corner and as the last recruiting class of the previous regime we are going to be in deep trouble without them (never thought I'd hear myself say that). All of those guys are Zips through and through and understand what it means to bleed, fight, and leave your all on the field for the Blue and Gold. Unfortunately a lot of their teammates and many of their coaches don't. You guys will be missed.

Unfortunately we don't have much to be thankful for as Zips fans this Thanksgiving (outside the promise of a new stadium) but nevertheless Happy Holidays to all the great fans of this University and here's to a better tomorrow for Zips sports.
