  1. 4+ star quick offensive guard Bob Gulley (6-4, 274, 5.0, Berea, OH) according to Max Emfinger at http://www.maxemfingerrecruiting.com. He calls a Four-Star Plus Players are considered to be in a Category of about the Top 500 Players in the the Country, but there may more than 500 Players in this Category, because if a Player is a "4+" on film, then he is a "4+" and not a "3". Zips are on his list along with BG and TOLEDO. Anybody know anything about this kid?
  2. Rec Center open to public UA invites public to use campus exercise and wellness facility by Coda Pritchard Staff Reporter The Rec Center has traditionally served the fit and soon-to-be fit students and faculty at the University of Akron. They may need to wait a little longer to use their favorite piece of equipment. The Rec Center is now offering its facilities to the local community and UA alumni. According to Roy Ray, vice president of business and finance and chief financial officer, the Rec Center opened to the public to reduce costs and to supplement the budget. "We've only been open a year and we want to optimize the Rec to better serve the students," he said. The Rec Center features a swimming pool, an indoor track, a fitness floor, table tenis, basketball courts, a weightlifting area and studios that hold aerobics classes. While the use of the facilities is free for students, the new members will be charged an annual membership fee, which will provide additional revenue to the Rec Center. The Rec Center will limit membership to 1,000 new individuals to prevent overcrowding. According to the director of Recreation and Wellness, Brian Lewis, 1,000 people may seem like a lot but they are equipped for the addition. Last week, the Rec Center had 2,500 students in one day, and it can accommodate up to 7,500 people. All of the benefits offered to students in the past will remain. Lewis said he would continue to look for ways to best suit the needs of the students. "There are 11 managers programming for the students and campus base," he said. Andrew Clevenger, a member of the fitness staff, does not think the students will be bothered by the new members because they will probably come during the early morning and evening hours. "I doubt the students will notice," he said. "It seems like the public doesn't want to be here when the students are here." Lawrence Liptack, an accounting student, said the new members won't bother him. "A facility this big that can be opened to the public would provide a nice service to the community," he said. While some students are concerned about the Rec Center becoming overcrowded, most don't think sharing the space will be a problem. "It depends on the time of day," senior Mike Archinal said, who frequently visits the Rec Center. "There are times when it's packed." Overall, sharing the space will not affect the UA campus, he said. According to Lewis, the Rec Center will remain the students throughout the process of accepting new members. "Our main mission was, and always will be, for the students." http://www.buchtelite.com/2005/0908/news_05.shtml
  3. Anyone can have a bad century. With the 49-24 loss to Purdue, Akron is now 1-14 against the Big Ten. The last win came over Ohio State ... in 1894  http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/4864824 The time has to be coming...
  4. Buckzip, If I'm not mistaken radio stations pay the university to broadcast their games, not the U paying them.
  5. Per the Beacon on 7/6/05, Fox Sports Radio is now on WJMP in Can't. For some reason the Beacon thinks 1520 is an Akron station when they broadcast from Can't. I tried tuning it in and you can't even get a signal on Route 8 south of Howe Ave. Fox Sports on 1520 AM The Fox Sports Radio Network and the nationally syndicated Jim Rome radio show is now broadcasting on WJMP 1520-AM in Akron... Fox Sports Radio programming formerly had been heard on 1350-AM in the Akron market. Why would 640 WHLO broadcast a Can't game, shouldn't they switch affiliates to 1520? I think they are just wasting air time in Akron broadcasting a Can't game. BTW. "The Big One" already broadcast Buckeye games, it would be sweet to steal those air waves though. On a side note, I never noticed before but it is pretty slick how when you type "K-E-N-T" you automatically turn it to "Can't." I just always typed as "Can't."
  6. Chase Blackburn was added to the Giants roster on June 22. Wonder how long he'll stick? He made it as a tryout player and another player was cut to make a roster spot. http://www.bigblueinteractive.com/pub/news_notes.cfm http://www.giants.com/team/giants_roster.asp
  7. This probably is old news to most of you but I hadn't seen it posted. Boom Goes The Dynamite If an ad pops up click "skip ad" and go to "watch now." This guy is hilarious... "Boom" In Hiding Ball State's Finest!!
  8. Here is what the license plates look like if you haven't already seen them. Not too shabby if I don't say so... http://www.uakron.onlinecommunity.com/licenseplates.htm
  9. The method to that madness might be vague, tricky and hard to understand, but it is working and has shown through athletic directors in mid-major conferences making extreme efforts. Conference USA has attempted an extreme effort that has been paying off over the past year. During the 2004 football season, the conference has played games on Tuesday night, as opposed to the normal college football days of Thursday and Saturday, to get aired by ESPN. The National TV exposure has brought more attention to mid-major conferences and has been a recruiting tool used by schools from smaller conferences. The Mountain West and Western Athletic Conferences also have contracts with ESPN for Friday nights and late games on Saturdays. “Building around a winning foundation can be hard for some schools, but efforts have to be made for success,†Max Corbet, Boise State assistant athletic director, said. “Finding ways to get your program on TV, whether it would be at 8 a.m. or 11:30 p.m., is a big way to attract recruits that might not be blue-chip recruits, but ones that are not far from that line.†http://www.ocolly.com/new_ocollycom/show_s....php?a_id=26655
  10. Check out this comment by Frye's high school coach: “He’s a tough, gritty, smart, determined kid,†King said. “He’s a winner and a leader. One year we were playing Shelby and were down 14-7 at halftime. On the first play of the third quarter, Charlie throws an interception and this big linebacker heads for the end zone with the ball. Charlie takes off and catches up to him at the 1. “Now, most high school quarterbacks are just going to let that guy run the extra yard for the touchdown, but not Charlie. He stood the kid up like he’s the one playing linebacker. “Charlie comes to the sidelines and I say to him, ‘Why did you do that? You could have suffered a concussion.’ But it wasn’t in Charlie to just let him score. “Ever since I met Charlie, I’ve known that with his make-up, he was just different. I knew he would someday get to the NFL. “Like I said, I’m a huge Browns fan, and while not wanting to put pressure on him, there’s a little bit of Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar in him. He’s an old-school kid. He’s not flushy. He’s not going to pull up in a BMW wearing all these gold necklaces. That’s just not his way. His passes don’t always look perfect – they sometimes wobble – but when the game is on the line, he gets the job done. A guy like Ryan Leaf can throw the ball 90 yards, but he can’t get the job done. Charlie can, and has. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news_room/n...rts/4226.0.html
  11. Zipboy, No mention of Romeo? I guess that was all just for fun earlier...
  12. Here is an article in the Buchtelite, (I know it is the Buchtelite), on the next QB. I hope JD has a better idea after today. http://www.buchtelite.com/2005/0414/sports_01.shtml
  13. From football.com... http://www.football.com/cgi-bin/posters/pr...at=draft1.shtml Akron quarterback Charlie Frye is receiving additional interest from Cleveland and Green Bay. Also, there is at least one team had has Frye rated ahead of one or both Aaron Rodgers and Alex Smith and there is at least one team that has him as the top-rated quarterback in the draft.
  14. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3530128 http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/3519586 Both continue to point to the Packers.
  15. It is kind of rough to look at the FIU website and see the stadium they have at a school like that. http://www.fiusports.com/football/stadium.htm Luckily our time is coming.
  16. Frye goes to Cleveland at #23, via trade!! http://www.gbnreport.com/2005projection.htm Cleveland (from Seattle) Charlie Frye QB Akron Browns use some of the profit from earlier Vikings' deal to jump ahead of Packers to get QB of the future; the fact that Frye is a local kid should also help to keep the dawg pound in check for a while
  17. This may be a month late, but I never saw anyone else post it here. I can't believe they wrote losing a talent like Frye will be a bit of a concern. You Think?! What a stupid comment. They also have Can't placed one spot above the Zips. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/Sp...nglooks_MAC.htm Akron Spring practice starts March 15, Spring Game April 16 What needs working on ... Running the ball. The passing game will also be a bit of a concern without a talent like Charlie Frye at quarterback so there has to be more than 97 yards per game on the ground to keep the offense moving. New running back coach Bill Biel will have his work cut out for him. The most important position to watch is ... Quarterback and offensive line. It's hard to immediately replace a talent like Frye, but big, strong sophomore-to-be John Ferguson will give it a try. The biggest issue is on the offensive line losing four starters. Don't expect that running game to rock right away. Spring attitude... Try to regroup in a serious hurry. This is still a good enough team to hope for a shot at the MAC title helped by losing Marshall from the East, but there's now Bowling Green to deal with. A win over Miami would mean almost everything, but it's going to take a while to reload on offense.
  18. Some Frye info... http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=149&p=2&c=368005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charlie Frye School: Akron Ht: 6-4 Wt: 225 40: 4.88 Year: 5Sr Bio: Four-year starter and All-Conference quarterback who holds numerous passing records at Akron. Posted 63.6%/2,623/18/8 as a senior. Positives: Nice-sized passer and a natural, smart leader. Sets up in the pocket with good footwork, remains poised and goes through receiver progressions, buying time for wideouts. Displays good field awareness and very good at finding the open wideout. Throws with an over-the-top delivery displaying zip on the short throws and the ability to quickly get the ball into the intended targets hands. Tough competitor who plays while injured. Negatives: Steps out of throws on occasion, which adversely affects his accuracy. Possesses a solid arm, yet does not have the gun to drive deep throws. Analysis: A signal caller who’s displayed progress throughout his college career, Frye offers both the physical and mental intangibles for the next level. More athletic than given credit for and can be used in a variety of passing offenses.
  19. Still no news of the stadium... http://www.buchtelite.com/2005/0407/news_01.shtml http://www.upakron.com/index.html How about the name for that website "Up Akron", maybe not the best word choice.
