2002 Zips Game the Defined College Football
Zipsrifle replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Uh....2 different Marshall games here folks. Leftbitch was 2 years before our Marshall MAC Farewell gift. -
Eminent domain is tough. I support bills that outlaw tearing down a bunch of occupied housing and giving it to for profit corporations. I'm not too worried about slum lords losing their rentals to eminent domain, we all have seen how bad some of these places are, but I don't like the idea of kicking out private residents. I saw the TV spot posted here on the stadium, and apparently UofA can't pay more for a property than it's appraised value. I think it should be some % over that, say 10% over the appraised. For someone losing their property, they should get something above and beyond for being forced out. I guess I could see the same for Buisnesses and Slum Lords. As for stadium design, I'm with ZFF. Build it with character! Make it the Camden Yards of College Football (Though I think it will take more than $60 million to get us Camden yards). I'd like to see 30,000 seats, but could live with less. I would rather the team play in a smaller, nearly sold out stadium than a huge, 25% full stadium. PLAN for future expansion so that any additions fit seamlessly into the stadium. I like the enclosed endzone with grass seating idea. For big games, it's packed and looks like regular seating, or maybe they could put up some portable bleachers. For other games, it just looks good!. I would like to see a scoreboard at least as nice as Miami's right off of Exchange street. It would be cool to be able to see the street from inside the stadium, and it would be cool to drive by during a game too! They are building those Condo's on the Zip Strip too, so maybe people could sit on their roofs and see into the stadium.

2002 Zips Game the Defined College Football
Zipsrifle replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
What amazed me was that before the game, anyone would have said our D was horrible. After the game, ESPN said something about how Akron's big bad defense was too rough with Byron. I was especially happy, because 2 years earlier Byron brought the Hunkering Terd back to keep us out of the MAC Championship game. -
Someone posted a link to some pics of the UCF stadium a while back. I DO NOT want a stadium like that. To me, it looks like they stretched their dollar as far as it would go to maximize seating. It appears to be a steel superstructure, aluminum seating, with a little bit of brick to give it a less flimbsy appearance. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/coll...adlines&index=1I will take 30,000 seats, with a bell tower and something that looks more substantial.

Soccer Stadium Master Plan
Zipsrifle replied to userduders's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I thought the new stadium was going to double as a soccer/football stadium? -
On YSU....hang with me on this one...
Zipsrifle replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I don't think the Steel-Tire would be a good trophy....not much steel or rubber around anymore. Maybe we do something completely different, the LOSER gets the trophy! In this case, it would be a vacant factory from the winners city! Personally, I think it would be good to play YSU. I like local rivalries, and God knows we don't have one of those! As for who has the better stadium....we're letting ours fall apart so we have to build a new one! -
If I remember correctly, he was probably "Discovered" when he ate then #15 Virginia Tech for dinner at the RB back in what, 95?

Don't know if this has been posted yet, but I found in this document:http://www3.uakron.edu/bids/findesignsvsva...mpusprojrfp.docwhere "The University intends to commence construction of the new on-campus stadium no later than September 15, 2007. "Also, the deadline for the Request for Proposal was May, 18th 2007. So, I imagine there is a flurry of activity within UA right now.
-
I wouldn't be suprised if things are already finalized, or will be in the next month.........Seems to me that tangible construction activities are taking place, and UA is already spending money on this thing. If an opening for the 2009 season is going to happen, we can't wait much longer. I always thought the proper forum to announce this would be at a major U Akron Sporting Event (BB, FB, Soccer). But nothing like that over the summer. Even if they are planning on announcing it at the first FB game, it seems that they must make some things public knowledge, and I've been able to dig up a lot of details so far.

I don't see where anyone is calling for JD's resignation here. Basically, I'm looking for some year over year improvement. JD isn't going going to get heat from anyone at UA for at least two years. LO was predictable. The first Offensive series after the half, we would go deep at least once. Lots of Offense, No Defense, and we would find a way to lose an exciting game. I give LO credit for getting me hooked on MAC football...it was exciting if disappointing. JD isn't as predictable, Defense getting better, Offense getting worse, Special Teams suck. Finds a way to win.Looking at our schedule, Given the QB and Line situation, I would expect to get pummled OOC, but the last two games better have MACC implications. If we aren't in the running, I'll be disappointed. If we lose one of the last 2 games and that keeps us from the MACC, I can't really complain.
-
I'm looking to this year to give me a feel for how good JD really is. We all thought he was a god at the end of the '05 season. After NC State last year, people were standing in line at Hopkins airport wishing him farewell, then....... He's got his 3rd great recruiting class in a row. I expect to be watching the Zips in Detroit at least once in the next two seasons. He's got the program built the way he wants it, now, will it win Championships?

General Parking is the way to go. Now, what are we going to do in '09 when we need to park in the city? Enjoy the inexpensive, good parking now. I imagine there will be assigned lots where we can Tailgate close to the stadium with open containers....we'll get bent over to park there!Oh, and I thought I read somewhere that they were going to have a "Tailgating" section on Brown St. just outside the stadium. My suggestion for UA: Start noting those of us who tailgate in GA at the Rubberbowl and GIVE us those spots for free the first season. If you put a premium on them the first year, they will be empty just like the "Premium" tailgating section is at the RB.

1) We need to win. Things are much better now than they were in past, but we need to be at the top of the East year in and year out. Nobody likes a looser.2) Scheduling. Our scheduling sucks. I live out of state, and Akron makes it very, very difficult for me to make it to games. F the MAC, F ESPN. I'm sick and tired of Tues, Trs. night games. If we get a weekday game, there better be only 1 a year and it better be against Can't early in the year, or with something on the line late in the season. Can't State needs to be early in the season, PERIOD! That was a HUGE crowd a few years ago!3) Tradition. There is NO TRADITION for the students on campus. No rallies, jumping in the fountain, following the band through campus, etc. When my buddies first started at OSU, they were swept in by the whole follow the band through campus thing. Need to get something like this started for the Freshman. It will take a few years to catch on.4) New Stadium. I didn't even know where the stadium was when I started at Akron. I didn't even know they were D1-A. I didn't even know what confrence they were in. The RB is too far away. It is an afterthough. Prospective students need to be shown an impressive stadium and fieldhouse when they come to campus.5) OSU needs to suck! Lets face it, with OSU winning, nobody is going to pay attention to Akron, no matter how good we are. If Akron goes undefeated, and OSU wins the Big 10 in a Bad year, OSU will still get all the press. That is the hand we've been dealt, we can't do anything about this. At some point, as with most people/programs in the spotlight, somebody will slip-up and OSU will fall slightly out of favor. We need to be on top when that happens and capitalize.IMO, we need to get our students involved. The community has shown that they are not going to suddently follow Akron. We need to build the Alumni base to get this program where it deserves to be.

WOW, hot topic. I am a HUGE Frye fan, but I agree with SGM and GP1 on a lot of points. Everyone is counting Charlie out. I will admit that he has an uphill climb, Cleveland got a Poster Boy, and the fans will want to see him play. For Charlie to LOSE his starting job will have to prove beyond all doubt that he is the better player. If BQ gets the nod, then Charlie is a backup, or gets traided. Whoever is the starter will get their brains beat in, unfortunately.I am a Browns fan, have always been a Browns fan (Though my interest in NFL Football fell dramatically when "You know who" took the team to Baltimore). I hope the Browns do well, but I think there will need to be a fundamental change in that Organization. Oddly enough, I don't really care what happens to Charlie. Part of me wishes he will get traided, because I sure as hell don't see the Browns Line getting him more protection. I don't think he is the next Joe Montana, but if he was dealt the hand the Big Ben was, he would succeed. He doesn't have a good NFL long ball. All of his passes are short, safe passes. If he had more time in the pocket, he would do well. In the end, Charlie has a pretty good gig. He's a millionaire, has a few more years in the NFL. Hopefully he doesn't take too much of a beating and will be able to live the rest of his life better than any of us could ever dream.Go Zips!

7 MAC Players drafter.Oh, and can someone from OSU remind me, when was Troy Smith Drafted?

It is always a shame to see this. Unfortunately, because the sport involves guns, a large portion of the population will applaud the elimination of the sport without the slightest understanding of what it involves. I commonly tell people that Rifle is primarily a “Mental” sport, kind of like Chess. A lot of mental training is required to excel in this sport, where you focus on a circular target for hours at a time. It is physically demanding in that matches are more of an endurance type of event. If you aren’t in shape, you’ll be able to get through one, but your performance will suffer. The goal is to hit something roughly the thickness of a mechanical pencil lead from 50 feet away. Great shooters can do this roughly 90% of the time, with the remaining 10% missing by just a hair. Though I have no numbers to back me up, I’m willing to bet that Rifle has the lowest rate of injuries of any NCAA sport. Also, as someone recently posted, it uses relatively little money. I applaud U of A for their continued support of the Rifle program. Coach Engle has been building this program for years, to the point where they are on the cusp of the National Championship match nearly every year. I believe, that sometime in the near future, they will make it into that match. We have some great athletic teams at UA, but I believe the Rifle team will be the first Varsity Team Sport at UA to win a National Championship!

Driving home today, listening to Sports Radio with the topic on how coaches were trying to steal commits from VT. This was based off of a blub by the VT coach. Something about how he had to reassure his recurits because other coaches were tyring to steal them away after the tragedy. I was waiting, and sure enough, the commentator said it was "Probably some Mid-Major school, the Mid American or something. It wouldn't be someone from a bigger school." WTF! I agree, it is pretty damn low to try to steal players due to something like this, but come on, pointing the finger at the MAC!?! After all the $#!+ we have to put up with in every sport, and now it is just assumed we are willing to do anything to break through. Of course it's got to be a MAC team. I'm never going to listen to "Sporting News Radio" again.

This is all because the University can't keep a secret. They should announce that the new stadium has been cancelled and that the RB will be undergoing $30 million in rennovations AND that the land U of A bought for the stadium will be turned into a sewage plant. Then they could get the land real cheap! THEN build the stadium there. Just need an elaborate hoax costing a little less than the premium the holdouts would receive.
-
OK, when is UA going to make a formal announcement? This has GOT to be the worst kept secret in Akron history. Come ON already!
-
This is a good deal. I think people would gladly pay $125 to see Akron play at The Columbus State University and in Cleveland. I've already got one new Akron Season Ticket Holder for this upcoming season because of this schedule. I'm already pumped!

!!!OPPORTUNITY!!!I've got a good idea. They should put together a package. Pay $$$ for two tickets, one for the Indians, one for the Zips, and throw in a couple of free hotdogs. That would really help attendance IMO. Don't they pay somebody at UA to think of stuff like this, and make it happen?

Letter To Coach Dambrot, Coaches & Team.
Zipsrifle replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
*Signed*Great Job Coach! I don't know what the Athletic Dept. feels about what is said on this site, but this is the site of the fans and this letter is unprecedented!
