Desired future opponents at InfoCision Stadium?
Zipsrifle replied to joshgozips's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'm sure if there was a need for InfoCision to seat 100,000, then we wouldn't be in the MAC and OSU would play us. I think it has more to do with money than anything else. $60 a ticket * 100,000 seats + Concessions + Merchandise = $8,000,000+ per game is my guess. -
Desired future opponents at InfoCision Stadium?

I thought I read somewhere a while back that OSU would never play a MAC school during the regular season anywhere but in Ohio Stadium. -
Most Memorable Rubber Bowl Experience
Zipsrifle replied to g-mann17's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I've been a fan since......: "The Toilet Bowl", 1994 OU vs. Akron, my first year in college. I realized that College Football was big Buisness: VT - 1996?. I still think that some money exchanged hands somewhere! I was there when: Byron got beat up by the big bad Akron defense?!?! Great win, too bad nobody was there to celebrate.Biggest Kick in the Gut: Can't State 2003. I was REALLY hyped up that year. It was after that game that my HATE for Can't State spiked!Worst Weather: No question, Turkey Bowl 2005. Greatest Win: Marshall 2004. Most Electricity before the game: Miami 2004.Most annoying visiting Band at the RB: Western Michigan - 1996. Every damn first down: da.da.da...dadadadada..dada.daaaa.daaaaaa.daaaaaaaaa! -
And it could be the Rifle team that gets it!

Strickland's message to UA
Zipsrifle replied to ZachTheZip's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Interesting topic. I see merit in both arguments. I haven't been following this topic in the papers, as I live in Michigan, so I don't have all the facts. As with everything, the key is moderation. Lets face it Ohio (and Michigan too) are in a tight position financially. Creative ways must be found to save money, and I can see some merit in combining disciplines that are taught at many schools, but have low demand. With that said, there are other disciplines that have a much higher demand, and a need exists for multiple universities. Each University has its strengths. OSU, because of its size, probably has more strengths than other schools. For a discipline were the job market and/or enrollment is too low, then I would favor a few schools being the center for that discipline and the other schools offering the classes remotely. This would still enable competition between the few universities offering the courses, and give the students a choice. No need to attend that school, you could take the courses remotely. For disciplines such as Nursing, Teaching, core Engineering, etc., it is probably a good idea to let the existing programs alone. As for having OSU being the “Flagship” and the other universities as satellites, I don’t know if I agree with this. Why does there need to be a “Flagship”? I too feel that OSU, since it is in the State Capital, and is the only “Major” college sports school in the state is considered as the most important school in the state, and gets some favoritism. As I mentioned earlier, OSU has many strengths, and it should be considered the center for those strengths. But it should not be the only school in the state offering ALL disciplines on campus. ZW, thanks for the comments about UA Engineers. I also do not put a lot of weight on the “Rankings”. As with all schools, there are great students, and there are bad students. Being one of the few UA grads working in Detroit (until recently) I have had the opportunity to work with engineers from the “Best” schools. While at Akron, I considered GMI (now Kettering) as being a very prestigious Engineering school. After working with many grads, and taking a few classes there, it is no different that UA. I’ve worked with some very, very good engineers from GMI, and with some that are not very impressive. As for rankings, I was always amazed while I was in school, how Akron Engineering was ranked much lower than other schools. This was despite the fact that Akron flat out DOMINATED the national student engineering competitions. Fortunately, business and Gov’t did not miss this fact, and I think this is one of the main reasons why UA is one of only 17 teams from across the country to chosen to compete in the Challenge X competition. -
I imagine that Rasor is right, they'll probably promote from inside. If not, they'll try to grab someone from somewhere else. Unfortunately, the ABJ is not going to sell significantly more papers if they cover the Zips more and neglect the other major sports teams. I also agree that TP seemed to treat UA as that nice little school next door. To be honest, I'm actually impressed with the coverage DLM is putting up these days. I've actually seen a few articles by him, more than in the past. Now, if the ABJ can just have someone attend all the games and not copy an article from the wire, I will be very impressed.

I too think that Hakes saw that he would be #4. I would think that Rodgers would be at more of a disadvantge here for two reasons. First, as a true Freshman, he is still adjusting to the pace of D1-A college football. Second, he is a true Freshman, and that means if he doesn't get the nod, he could redshirt and have 2 years after Jackson and Jaquemain leave. Does anyone think both CJ's would leave if Rodgers got the nod? Don't want Rodgers to leave if he is this good. I haven't been a practice, but if it's that close, and nobody is courting Rodgers, I would see if he would want to Redshirt!

I'm sorry BZ, I guess we don't know about football on this board. Akron fans only talk about simple things...like the band. If we knew how it worked, we wouldn't get so worked up when someone on the board makes blanket statements demeaning all of Akron's players. Please, show us the way, we are only Akron fans, we don't understand these complicated things. I'm glad that someone from OSU showed up to explain how things are done.

I remember how pumped I was when JD started. Thinking we would give PSU a run for their money and how Akron was going to tear everyone up. We got creamed and lost 4 of our first 5. Then we got rolling. I guess I hope the same is true for Army. I hope that the new offense, young line and new QB will put them at a disadvantage, since we have a coach starting his 4th year.

Patriot Bowl seats for Season Tix holders
Zipsrifle replied to doccomet87's topic in Akron Zips Football
It seems to me the issue here isn't with the seating, but rather that some feel UA has pushed their die-hard fans aside in hopes for more money. We'll have to see what happens in later years, but I'm sure this is part of the deal UA had to agree with to be in the Patriot Bowl. Though I would have liked better seats, the Patriot Bowl is out to make money, and giving the best seats away to people who would be coming to the game anyway is not going to make you money. We all know that attendance will be sparce, so the cheap seats will be the more exciting areas to sit. And as many have mentioned, just move to better seats as the game goes on. Don't get me wrong, I would have liked better seats too. At least UA is trying to improve it's image with higher profile games. -
Hmmm, that article did seem to make UA out to be this unstoppable growth that will soon take over the city. I agree with what most here said, UA is THE driving force in the city right now. I firmly believe that a city without a strong university is bound to wither and die. UA is not just strong, it's thriving and is in need of room to grow. The city should be glad the UA is willing to step up to make over the areas surrounding campus. As for the $400,000,000. That probably includes every dollar that can in any way be connected back to Quaker Square. A new hotel will be built, downtown will become more vibrant, and Akron will be a better city for it. Lets face it, Mayor Don is struggling to stay relevant in Akron.

I agree with a lot of the points Buckzip made. Our O-Line and D-Line is inexperienced and OSU has a LOT more depth than we do. We'll be gasping for air, no matter how close, late in the game. Purdue 2 years ago, the score was close, and we were threatening late in the 3rd. It seemed at that point we ran out of gas. You could see Purdue just running guys in every play, our guys stayed out there, and Purdue pulled away. With that said, I don't know if I would make blanket statements like OSU's D-linemen are better than any of the Akron players...I detect some bias in this statement. I agree that OSU has better talent, but that is a pretty strong statement. We could have some stars on our hands but don't know it yet...I guess if your screen name was ZipBuck, I would give you the benefit of the doubt, but since Buck is first, I get an idea of where your loyalty lies.

Glad to see Dru get picked up somewhere! How does that usually work out in Europe? Do they get a decent wage or will he be working durng the off season to pay for rent?
-
I'm very glad we have Army first in CBS. Hopefully there is a decent crowd, because that place is LOUD! The guys will get good experience, but we'll still be very green when we arrive in Columbus. As for almost upsetting OSU in '01, I don't know if I would go that far. We played them very well that year, and we should have given them more of a scare than we did.

If I remember correctly, didn't an Akron DB tip a pass (Should have been intercepted) in the 2nd half and it was caught by OSU and ran in for a touchdown? I also seem to remember the announcers saying that if it was intercepted, it would have probably been 6. I would say we should try run-run-run with what appears to be a pretty good stable of backs, but I don't think our O-Line is ready to try that against OSU. I hope we minimize our mistakes, and capitalize on theirs. BTW, how does the special teams look this season? Hopefully we can pin our opponents deep.Someday, I hope the stars align. We'll be stacked with veterans, comming of a MAC Championship season and catch a Big Ten team in a rebuilding year. Upset!

I was wondering what would be a good place to park for the OSU game? I just received my Alumni Bus trip invite, and the bus will arrive at the Fawcett Center at 9:30. I'm not riding the bus, but will be there with the Zip Truck! I did some checking, and it appears that the parking lot in front of the Fawcett Cnter is open for general parking, so I think I'm going to tailgate there. Attached below is the parking map for OSU. The Fawcett Center is the parking lot just above "OSU Parking Permits Only", with the number 284 next to it. I don't know how quickly the parking lots fill up, but I'll be there WAY before the bus gets there!http://tp.osu.edu/Maps/FootballParkingMap.pdf

So, will he need to sit out a year or would he play this season? Does he have significant playing time?
-
I also don't see why they would move the game. I mean if they wanted a larger gate, just have the game in Browns Stadium.
-
Well, apparently it is a foregone conclusion that Quinn will start later this year. If he had just signed and been in camp day one, he would have been the starter from the get go. Sure his first practice was terrible, but he's good for it. Sould be an interesting year!
-
EXCELLENT! Remember, he was our top DB before he moved to WR. He still is learning the position. I have high hopes for him!
-
Actually, if you look at the background on the season tickets, you get a better idea of where the current logo comes from. I don't know if I like it. No need to show more of the roo face. Hell, Wilson on "Home Improvement" didn't have to show more than his eyes for what, 10 years?
-
MECH ROO brings images of Batman, the Dark Night to mind. I would rater see this than the current cockeyed roo.

Glad to see the Rifle Team get some comments. This never used to happen. Looks to be a very nicely done media guide (140 pgs.....WOW  )

I would love to see UA have a new arena downtown, but realistically, I don't see it happening any time soon. I agree that it could be used year 'round and that it may draw a minor league team. I like the idea where everyone want's to put it. It all makes sense. What I don't agree with is the "Have Faith, look to the future" ideas. How has this NOT been the mentality of UA recently! Have you guys been to campus recently!?! That is having faith in spending a TON of money knowing there is a high probability that student enrollment will increase. Guess what, enrollment is up. I also want to know where is UA going to get the money? The State isn't about to cough it up and UA already has a new stadium being built. As much as it is not ideal, the JAR is not falling down and it is not undersized for our current needs. I don't consider "Build it and they will come" or "Have faith" as an adequate justification for pouring millions of dollars into an arena. I think we all know the RB was allowed to fall apart so we could get a new stadium...we've all seen the "improvements" over the past 10 years. That was easy to get away with in a 66 year of DPW stadium. That isn't going to happen with a 20 year old arena. I would like a new arena as much as the rest of you, but it's not going to happen until we sell that place out for several years in a row!

Is there a reason this can't be done now....other than we don't have enough students at the game to actually make UA big enough to be seen?
