  1. Pete was the best. As a kid I used to take my transistor AM radio to bed, with my ear phone plugged in my ear (so my parents couldn't hear it) and listen to Pete until he went off the air. Many times I'd wake up for school with the earphone still in...and the WWWE morning news playing. The callers were the best. A bunch of entertaining wing nuts. Pete had a great balance of real sports substance, coupled with entertainment. If callers were uninteresting, he hung up on them. If they were idiots, he hung up on them. Kids? Hang up. He had a great knack for what was really interesting, and what was worthless. You can do that when you're confident, have a great show, and aren't begging for listeners. No one hangs up on idiots anymore. That's why I don't listen to radio sports talk today. It's time has passed. This guy is a close to a listenable, knowledgeable, interesting sports talk host as I've found in the post-Pete era. Too bad he's no longer on the air locally. +1 on Pete Franklin I'll never forget the bits he would run about the Cavs .. something like "Follow the bouncing Ball" ?? Called Stepien "Uncle Teddy" .. hilarious stuff.
  2. +1 on that. And also "Tall Tales" .. they were great books because he was able to set the stage to the story, and let the characters (interviewees) tell the story directly. Both are must reads for basketball fans. I'm not a pro ball fan anymore, but those are good books back into the history of the game.
  3. If you haven't read Mark Titus' blog, I think you're missing out. He's a younger Bill Simmons with the experience of being inside a BCS athletic program. Usually a good read. Titus weighs in on Miami @ Club Trillion
  4. Interesting point about this maybe making the hill from mediocrity to respectability tougher ... at least as it relates to becoming a good tournament team in the way the Zips have. It'll be a little harder to progress later in the weekend and build that experience if you have a .500 or below regular season.
  5. I actually like it mostly. 3 road games in the first swing through the East. That means 3 of the last 5 are at home before the Zips Invitational at the Q. B) B) Go Zips!
  6. Now, what POSSIBLE reason could there be for Can't State to get the home game vs. UA at the end of the regular season 2 years in a row?
  7. I've been to pretty much every MAC tournament game since it moved to the Q in 2000. It's a great time .. and a corporate holiday. That aspect of my reservations doesn't really relate to how many games the Zips are in .. I'm there regardless. For the price, you can't beat it if you're a hoops fan. Go Zips!
  8. "Dambrot said he's got a good idea of the starting lineup. Cvetinovic and McClanahan will line up with junior 7-footer Zeke Marshall, sophomore point guard Alex Abreu and junior forward Quincy Diggs." Article also says that Kyle Peterson is going to get significant playing time. No offense to Kyle, but I very much doubt he see's anything more than mop up time. Of course, with as good as we are supposed to be this year that could mean him getting 10+ minutes a game (just stirring the pot here). Really?
  9. This isn't going to matter to the Zips.
  10. As a fan of the tournament who declares the quarterfinals day a company holiday ... I don't like this format. 3 evening sessions is a crap load of babysitting to come up with. Also, the Zips would have had to win 5 games instead of 4 last year? Gut reaction here .. I don't like it. I do reserve to change my opinion with further thought.
  11. Archive is up for anyone who missed it. Or wants to watch it at work the next 60 days or so.
  12. So since my lunch meeting is late, here's the timeline: - Mid-March 2010, Zips lose to OU @ the Q, and to WGB @ the JAR - March 24th, Abreu Commits to the Zips for fall 2010 - March-April: Three Zips guards depart the program (Humpty, Steward, Sullivan) - June 2010: Ennis decommits (had been committed for fall 2011). - September 2010: Ennis commits to Rice. - November 2010 - March 2011: Abreu instrumental in NCAA appearance And everyone lives happily ever after. B) B) Go Zips! P.S. Regarding CK's original post, I agree .. KD has seemed to win with these transitions when they've happened. Cedric was an absolute program changer for the Zips, in his approach, intensity and work ethic.
  13. I thought Ennis re-opened his recruiting after Rico signed on, and also following the departure of Humpty, Sullivan & Steward.
  14. Were you able to make the trip? Unfortunately no. I'm following the game via Twitter updates. 1:24 into the 7:00 game Zips up 7-0. Who's tweating?
  15. Were you able to make the trip?
  16. Picking up the pace. 52-37 Zips after 3. Walsh playing well.
  17. Defensive 2nd quarter. Zips 26-23 @ the half.
  18. End of first quarter of game 1, zips up 22-17. Tree with the starting nod @ pf.
  19. But will Reggie start him and play him in crunch time?
  20. Here you run into trouble. You're here admonishing energized fans about their opinions, and you want to base the cold shower on facts to back up your reservations. I think it's good to be cautious here. You live in NEOH and are a Vikings fan. I get it. We all have big hopes, and some of us are more eager than others to dream big for our guys. Problem here is that your "facts" are categorically and completely inaccurate. The Zips have received AP votes, on multiple occasions under KD. It's not some magic land they've never visited. Is the AP poll a real poll? Two NCAA births in 3 seasons are real, tangible evidence of success. They weren't accidents. I look forward to more. I've got them on. B) Go Zips!!
  21. Good for him. I love to hear about our student-athletes graduating. +10
  22. So it wouldn't surprise you for the zips to be rated worse than BSU & Miami?
  23. Check out Zach on the bandwagon early! Welcome aboard! B) B) Go Zips!
  24. We do?!? Why? It's called an exhibition game. Everyone plays them.
