Believe the masses. Do a Twitter search of Kevin Cosgrove to increase the sample size of opinions you hear. Lots of reactions to Tom Deinhart's status about the hire. One thing I can assure you will never happen with me is to base an opinion on counting noses in Twitter or any other social gossip network. A prime example of why I would not trust the chattering of a vocal fan base was the hiring three years ago of Gene Chizik to be head football coach at Auburn. The Auburn fan base went ballistic and filled every known sports gossip network with extreme venom against Chizik, who they loudly proclaimed unworthy of the position for every conceivable reason. Three years later the Auburn fan base worships the ground Chizik walks on because he just delivered a national championship. All of my life I've tried to form opinions based on my personal evaluation of data from what I consider to be the most thoughtful, intelligent sources, not the most numerous, vocal, and opinionated sources, and that's not about to change. You make an excellent point. I belong to a chat group that usually talks college football. Most of the group are SEC fans. They lambasted Chizik mercilessly. And, they still do. As noted, Chizik delievered the goods.

I would love to find a good route between Bowling Green and Akron. The durn GPS is little help. Drove up via the turnpike and US 6. Long, boring drive. Came home via US 6 and US 20 to US 250 and US 224. More cops than you could shake a bagel at. My radar detector was squawking both ways. Thank God for cruise control. US 20 and Clyde always spooks me. I think its where bad cops go to die. The rain of threes was delightful. BUGS had their zone packed in to stop Nik and Zeke. They gambled that they could contain the Zips on the perimeter. Steve nails a trey early (at the deuce) and it was game on. Nitro went krazy. The Zips had more open looks than dandelions in a field. The rare times BUGS went to mano mano Nik and Zeke killed them. They never stayed in man long. Some one commented that we were playing eight against five. All evening to be honest. Tacky, tacky, the BUGS pep band riding Quincy for an air ball when they were down thirty-five, KD began yanking starters with ten to play. Could easily been over a fifty point spread. Certainly fattened up Zips batting averages. Best part of the show: Down a zillion BUGS gets cute and attempts an alley-oop. Bardo intercepts the lob in and reverses. The Zips quick pass up court and do an alley-oop of their own. Successfully!

does YSU even have a forum? haha Not sure - but I do know they did have 3 wins - 200% more than Akron One thing for darn sure ... if YSU played Akron's schedule, they would be 0-12. If Akron played YSU's schedule the Zips, as sad as they were, would probably be no worse than 8-4. But, then, why bother? Be nice to get YSU as our non-IA home game. Suspect that would cause the Penguins to hibernate after the blow out loss. Its easy to flap your gums when you do not have to belly up to the bar. Ianello is no soft hearted Jim Tressel. YSU would get smoked.

The guy you want shooting the ball down three with nine seconds to play is BRETT McKNIGHT. The season statistics bear this out. Oh, and the statistics show that Alex Abreu is far and away a better point guard than Steve McNees. Personally, I love having Steve on the floor; at the shooting guard. The problem is that Steve has it in his head that he is the point guard and when he is moved to shooting guard he sulks, mopes and under performs. Steve needs to get past that. The Zips need him. Although I do not have stats to back it up I sense that Steve shoots the three ball a lot better when he is operating as a point guard. Its that mopey, dopey, "I donna wanna be no two guard" attitude. Oh, and for the person that picked D-Robb. A far better choice than Steve. Remember this from your childhood. Might Casey struck out. ## SUMMARY GP-GS Min FG% 3PT% FT% R/G A/G STL BLK PTS/G ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 04 MCNEES, Steve....... 25-25 31.8 .332 .309 .685 2.4 2.7 22 2 8.7 05 MCCLANAHAN, Brett... 25-24 27.0 .425 .373 .875 3.9 1.4 24 3 11.0 11 ABREU, Alex......... 25-15 19.9 .352 .329 .740 1.5 3.6 36 2 6.5 12 ROBERTS, Darryl..... 25-10 26.7 .416 .370 .930 2.7 1.8 19 1 8.6 13 CVETINOVIC, Nikola.. 25-25 28.1 .444 .000 .717 7.0 2.0 33 4 11.9 23 MCKNIGHT, Brett..... 18-0 17.2 .440 .413 .700 3.1 0.8 8 1 9.2

Quincy can improve his game immensely simply by keeping his shots inside fifteen feet. Beyond the arc he is horrible.

A coach from this staff recently was hired by the University of Michigan, a member of the vaunted BCS conference known as the Big Ten. Thus, some one was doing a good enough job to gain a major promotion. Hear, hear, Vince seems like the man for the job. Based on his performance, not that folks on ZipsNation want him, even though many of us do.

Granted, but do you want to rely on that happening every game? As has been stated on this board a bunch of times, even if you are having an off night offensively, defense can keep you in the game. I was just pointing out that after what appeared to be a very good defensive first half (28 points), that was a lot to give up in the second. Western Michigan got 17 pts on 20 free throws in the 2nd half alone. Was starting to look a lot like our game @ NIU when they shot 40 from the line. Not sure they deserved that many free throws in a half...especially in our house. Credit the three not so blind mice for all the WMU free throws. They "homered" the Zips repeatedly. If you were paying attention or watch the replay on STO you can observe that the refs repeatedly tried to get WMU back into the game with bad calls/no calls etc. Every run the Zips made the refs countered with calls to stop the bleeding. Or, the classic no call. WMU made grabbing Zips jerseys an art form and not once were they flagged. Traveling? You bet. Calls for traveling? Get serious. Zips flagged for "touch" fouls while WMU needed to draw blood for a Zip to get a free throw. I hope we never see any of those clowns again. They need to go back to reffing CYO ball. And, here is a clue for the lame. The lame, the folks that bleat, "but, but, the total fouls were nearly the same". Review the play-by-play and discover that Zips fouls came in bunches during the heat of battle while padding the stats with WMU calls when the game was lost come at the end of the game. Most officials are dishonest, not stupid. Yes, I said it, "most officials are dishonest".

A 1-11 team is a tough sell; new facilities or not. What perks my interest are the JUCO transfers. These are athletes that were originally targeted to BCS caliber teams. This is a core to build on. Kids do grow up. I hope that especially Moore brings maturity, leadership and a winning attitude. Then, the lowly Zips actually have a genuine chance of success.

Dambrot has contracted the Hipsher syndrome. Hipsher never trusted any player except his own sons. Your points are spot on. Isn't it odd that two years in a row a Freshman phenom point guard ends up unraveling. How would you react to being continually shoved aside so a more experienced, but lesser caliber player could do your job?

Nice Bio .... Kayvon Afsarifard

Let's see. Downtrodden, back bencher Zips getting away with fouls even at home. The Refs must be slipping. Most coaches "work" the refs. Get over it. Kest has done a pretty decent job of lifting the lowly Lady Zips out of the stink cellar. All this while being continually poached by other conference teams ... including yours. This season Zips are young often starting three true freshmen. The Sockets start juniors and seniors. Zips got lucky with the scheduling or the might Sockets would have crushed the poor Lady Zips in TwoLeeDo. Try tossing a compliment or two rather than ranting how your over dog team sucked on the road. Geez, one of your ex- players decides to transfer to a school that wins, gets to the postseason, and ranks in top 50 of attendance in NCAA. What a piece of **** she is for having those aspirations. BTW, she is not on scholarship and probably won't be next year. Didn't realize you start three freshmen...im sure Tricia Cullop will convince them to transfer two hours west where they might have a chance to win... Yeah, she left a scholarship for a dump campus in a city that's only famous for its NeoNazi groups and the fact that it's conveniently close to Detroit without actually being in Detroit. She also left a team that was definitely on the upswing and no doubt on the way to being a contender in the conference. She's a traitor and a stupid one at that. An incredibly stupid decision to give up a scholarship for walk on status. She probably could not graduate from the University of Akron in the first place. Bad decision; a really, really, bad decision.

Wonderful ... !!!! Just fricking wonderful .... !!!!! McNees plays 35 minutes. I predicted at the beginning of the season that this team can NOT win with Steve on the point. Alex plays 13 minutes. So, obviously Steve is on the point. This woe will continue all season. KD has crawled into his Dan Hipsher shell. At the Ohio game a friend remarked that the Zips were not playing as a team. The box score shows that they are no where near being a team. A woeful SEVEN assists to compliment the TWELVE turnovers. Wonderful, just fricking wonderful. Its time to play the kids. No one can shoot from the perimeter? Really? Josh Egner got TWO whole minutes and Dakota got ZERO. Both these kids can launch from Mars let alone downtown. Bardo plays FIVE minutes? Bardo at least can control the middle, scoring aside. More proof of crawling into the Dan Hipsher (I can only trust my sons) shell. Pooey. KD is love with multiple offensive schemes. Junk them and run basic pick-n-rolls and ball screens. Pound the ball inside. Kick the ball out, etc. Oh, get their damned paws out of their pockets and up in the air on defense. Count me as one of the many who are totally P.O.ed at this.
-
Two points: 1) Judging Ianello recruiting skills is totally premature. The proof will be in the pudding. 2) The highly regarded Miami of Oxford team of 2010 had a fortuitous interception/fumble (I don't recall which) in the last minute of the game against 1-11 football team to win the conference championship.

A question for the Nation. Wasn't there suppose to be a first team All State player from Medina? Is she coming or did she bail?
-
More real defense, please. This "hands in the pockets" defense flat out SUX. I did like the 1-1-3 (as KD calls it). The down side is that a good trey shooter would feast on that defense.
-
According to KD; Josh Egner will see 5-10 minutes in the first half every game the rest of the way. If Josh does well, he will be rewarded with extra playing time in the second half. The plan is to have Josh take minutes so starters can rest. Heard this on the radio post game interview. Like another poster I would like to have seen Egner and Dakota Euton come on the floor with 4-5 minutes remaining when the outcome had been decided. They need the playing time and the Zips need the depth. BTW, I see that the Zips are still using KD's patented "hands in pocket" defense. Thank God they were playing the worst shooting team in the conference last night.

Same here, my wife just doesn't understand how yelling at the TV or radio helps anything. I always tell her that the Zips feel the vibe no matter where they are playing. She hid the camcorder on me one night when the Zips were being televised. Afterward, even I had to admit that If my performance had been reviewed by mental health professionals I would have probably been safely locked away in a rubber room. It is a passion. Amen, Amen. And, I am still looking for a wife that shares this passion.

BG Game Saturday - A "Must Win?"
GoZips replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Ada Zip, excellent points. Matt Futch has matured into a decent professional player. Too bad Matt did not have the body bulk he has now when he played for Akron. Mike Bardo gets minutes based on more than his years of experience. Mike gets minutes partially because he is a six-ten wide body that defends and rebounds. Like you, I would love to see Josh Egner get more minutes, especially in meaningful situations. You have to love Josh's athletic abilities. He just needs to get playing time to improve. It is regrettable that the Zips had to "burn" Euton's red shirt. Had a recent conversation with Dakota's Dad where his father lamented that Dakota came to Akron feeling pretty good about his conditioning. Coming out of high school Dakota was bench pressing 240#. First day in the weight room Dakota discovered that Darryl Roberts bench presses 340#. Its a learning year. Dakota will, like Josh, be a major part of future Zips teams. Mike Green I am not so sure about. Let us see how he handles the competition. Ada, few players come straight out of high school and become instant stars in college. Don't you think that coaches usually like having juniors and seniors on the floor? Look at the fine end of game performance Steve McNees and Darryl Roberts gave us against BGSU. Oh, and the calvary is coming. Haney and Treadwell are doing just fine in school. Makes me wonder if there will even be room for Nikola next season. Yeah, you bet there are plenty of minutes if Nik elects to play another year. Sure hope he does. Oh, QUICK, I think the sophomoric comments made by unTrue, were directed at me since I am a well known arrogant, S.O.B. know it all who fortunately can back up my mouth with my experience. Besides, the grammar was atrocious, I'd say on the level of a nine year old or a Cant grad. -

Yes indeed. It is about the people. As I watched the post game interview with KD the interrogator remarked about the large crowd size. Blistering cold, three losses and still the people came. I missed it. More than a bit under the weather I lurked close to the throne room all day. At one point I went out and started the car. Did the obligatory snow removal and then ... my tummy reminded me that venturing even this far from the throne room could invite disaster. Turned off the engine and beat a quick retreat to the throne. Alas. I watched the game on TV. Which is something I never do. It was remarked to me late in the loss to Ohio that the Zips were not playing as a team. Well, the Zips looked very much like a team against BUGS. -
The popularity of College Soccer
GoZips replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
LOL! I loved this statement: "Two sports however, women's professional basketball and women's college basketball, are not favorites for any sports fan." It's certainly good to confirm what I am not. I wonder how many people who said they did not follow any sports reported they love soccer. Anyone in the know knows that football (i.e., "soccer") fans know their game is much more than any mere "sport". Ah, but women's vollyball is ranked right behind NFL football ... !!!! Got to love those Danskin togs. -
"However, after Guyton passed a stipulated polygraph test on Thursday and a theft charge — a fifth-degree felony — was dismissed by Judge Kevin Poland in Portage County Municipal Court in Can't, Guyton has been reinstated to the men’s basketball team." Okay, all you lawyer types, since when is a polygraph test admissible evidence in a court of law in Ohio? Shady Cant State and Portage County politics continues.

Thnx for mentioning the "I Believe" celebration. It was a joy to watch as the basketball team joined in with the Rowdies and danced in glee.
