The "I hate the spread offense" thread
g-mann17 replied to scottditzen's topic in Akron Zips Football
I don't want a run oriented offense. I don't want a pass oriented offense. I want a balanced offense. Those who want a two back offense, I agree. Especially in short yardage. If we ran the spread offense like other schools do, we would have two backs in the backfield. They are the RB and the QB. With Jacq in the game, there was never a threat of him running so it was a one back offense. Let's see if we have "two backs" this week. The next time we are in short yardage they need to have the QB under center and Tuzze blocking for Alex A. If Tuzze touches the ball once a game, that is one time too many. We don't have an offense that could make a fullback effective except as a blocker. Our inefficient running game is a product of our defense. I know that sounds strange, but the defense we run is soft. Our offense practices against our defense in the spring and two-a-days and it makes them soft as well. We are not a physical team (Akron has really never had a very physical team except for some of the Faust years when we ran a power offense). Our offensive line is not as physical as it should be making the rest of the offense soft. Offensive linemen taking penalties after the play is not physical, it is stupid. The cycle continues.WRONG!**I say we start a new trend on the board and this is it.You lie!Forced 6 turnovers in 3 games (2 per game not an average), have allowed 119 rushing yards per game. They've played two Big 10 opponents. The defense is far from "soft".Subtract out the game against Morgan State. Please have these stats completed and posted on this board by 8:00 PM toady.Forced 4 turnovers in 2 games (still 2 per game average) 151.5 rushing yards per game. Average starting field position for opposing offense Opponents 46. Sorry, you're still...WRONG! -
Here is a run down of the last two games...In 2006, Akron's last trip to Mt. Pleasant, the Zips were coming off the high of defeating N.C. State for the program's first win ever over a BCS program. However, CMU's Josh Gordy had a 100-yard interception return for a TD and then freshman Dan LeFevour completed 16-of-23 for 162 yards while rushing for 67 yards on 10 attempts. Akron rallied, scoring with 11 seconds left to make the score 24-21, but UA did not recover the ensuing on-side kick, providing the final margin. In 2007 - the last time the schools met - Central came to the Rubber Bowl on a cold and snowy day the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 23). The Chippewas scored twice inside the final seven minutes, including a one-yard LeFevour plunge with 1:31 left for a 35-32 win. Down 12 with 8:08 left, LeFevour had a four-play, 57-yard drive that only used 1:05, capped with a 30-yard TD pass to Kito Poblah. Akron looked to put the game out of reach, but a penalty would ultimately force the Zips to punt. Five plays and 53 yards, covering 1:12, put CMU on top as LeFevour scored on a quarterback sneak.

Doing what? If we're talking rumors, as fan sites are want to do, what is the substance of this rumor? Everybody here knows who we're talking about, but there have been no names mentioned, so no names, but what sort of infractions are included in the rumors? STZDon't ask me, I didn't start the rumor. I was just reiterating the fact that it was a rumor, and trying to say that if said rumor were 100% true than we have at least one AD that completely missed it or didn't care. (or in other words, everyone needs to calm down)
-
I would like to remind everyone that this was a rumor, has yet to be confirmed. If it is true, yes it's better to lay down the law now because then the NCAA is less likely to sanction. But again until it's in the Beacon (or any legit media) I find the rumor suspect at best. We're on our 3rd AD (in the JD era) and the rumor says the person has been doing it since JD got here, trying to tell me that Mack wouldn't have picked up on it? If so Houston is in for a world of hurt.
-
Well I would argue that Ohio beat Cal Poly (really?) and a very bad North Texas. EMU is 0-3 and just lost Schmit for the season.
-
No running game = no passing game and tired defense (ask the Browns)

So you admit to being a front runner

My friend there are no "minor recruiting violations"

To do what? Coach or fly over the stadium in lieu of the Goodyear Blimp or both?He is a Hell of a coach though. Probably not a good fit in college. At least he would have a heck of a view of the action from up there.

Have you seen the estimates on the needed maintenance and refurb to the Rubber Bowl? Not to mention the sponsorships?I happen to agree with your qualification. The new place was needed just to keep the program running in place. But this reality in itself disproves the concept that it was built "for bigger things than the MAC". It was built to help Akron excel in the MAC. Nothing more. Nothing less. But to acccomplish that, it requires a football version of the full-court press. I'm not sure (never have been) that the people on the ground are capable of pulling off what it takes to fill the stadium on a consistent basis. That's why our new man, Wisty has to crack the whip. I'd love to be a fly on his wall this week! Minus the fact that the quote you use "for bigger things than the MAC" comes directly from the university president, the fact remains that many teams play in far worse stadiums than we did. They could have went the route of doing minor structural repairs to the Rubber Bowl for ages. They could have built a MAC stadium (any MAC stadium) for half of what the built the Info. Yes everyone here wants to excel in the MAC. But we also don't want to be stuck in the MAC. At what point some of you decided to seperate the two is beyond me. Some of you lack vision.

Yes unfortunately there are only 2 good teams in the three conferences you mentioned.Florida and Texas. The rest of the schools in both those conferences suck. And their bottom is damn near worse then the MAC bottom (Colorado anyone?)...and the PAC 10, their stud team just lost to Washington, really Washington? They've choked in conference for the last 4 years, but the "PAC 10 is a great conference"If the Big 10 would man up and get some coaches with some real aggression it would not even be close. Rich Rod is going to end up owning the conference for the next 10 years after another recruiting cycle.*edit - but this is all off topicOff topic....sorry.Name one Big Ten team that could win the PAC 10. The best Big Ten team lost at home to a PAC 10 team that lost at Washington last week and will not win that conference.Name one Big Ten team that could win a DIVISION of the Big 12 or SEC. Maybe the Big 12 north is as bad as the Big Ten, but I'd like to see it.Can every coach in the Big Ten be that bad? I forgot, this board is full of Browns fans. The rest of the teams suck? Cal seems to be a good team, beat Minnesota at MN. USC just beat the jok........ darling of the Big Ten in Columbus. Texas Tech seems to be a good team. Alabama seems to be a good team. Oklahoma seems to be a good team. OK State seems to be a good team. Mississippi seems to be a good team. LSU seems to be a good team. Are you sure you want to say they all suck?Ugh. Yes, every coach in the Big Ten is that bad. They all play Big Ten ball. Because they all play in cold climates. Come November you aren't running Texas Tech style offense when it's a rainy, snowy mess. (at least that is the ideology in most every Big 10 team)To compare "who would win the PAC 10 or Big 12" when teams play each other 2 times in a 10 year period is idiocy. If OSU played in the PAC 10 it would take 5 years and they would win consistantly. Why? Because they make more money than any school in the nation. You have the advantage of seeing a team every year, you have tons of tapes, tons of connections with other coaches, the ability to personally scout more than one game, exposure to their tendencies to a much higher level.Hell OSU has already went into Texas and beat them. PSU has an exceptional record against SEC schools. Hell a soon to be horrible Michigan team put the wood to Florida 2 years ago.The overall records are going to be horribly skewed because the Big 10 schools constantly play "away" games in every bowl they qualify for.Bring any of those schools to the Great Lakes in January and see how they play.

Now, you all know how much I back Jacq (I think he is a better game manager, that's what we needed) however at this point, until I know Jacq is even an option, I say don't burn the Redshirt on Nicely.Rodgers had some moments, the lack of any kind of run game hurt. The couple times we moved the ball, we had very solid runs that set up some decent passes. Heck he was 7-8 for 96 yards and a touchdown in the first half.He fell apart in the second half because he started trying to force things to happen instead of letting them happen. I think if he knows he has the reigns and knows he has something to fall back on (Burney, Allen, and Torrence being able to run a little bit) he will be less likely to force things. Now barring an injury, he can hopefully play the rest of the season and win us 6 games. But we will see.(Again, Rodgers because I don't know if Jacq will ever play again, if he only skipped a class or meeting, I say Jacq plays next week, but unlike the last suspension, I didn't even see Jacq on the sideline)

"Should JD be fired (any time soon)?!?"For what? For finding out a player broke a team rule and suspending him? For putting in a player that 74% of this board begged for last year and still over 50% begged for this year? Because Rodgers came out in the second half doing his best Vinnie Testeverde impersonation? I'm sorry, if we wind up at the end of the year 5-7 yes Wistrcill is required to "re-evaluate" and we probably will end up with a different coach. However going 6-6 or better JD handled the situations he was delt in a fine manner and he won't be going anywhere."If we lose to CMU it's panic time"Only if we lose players too. We would be 1-3 at that point. So what. The MAC is what it is. No team is dominant and the east teams we play are damn lousy (Ohio, Temple, Can't, Buffalo, are as bad as they look) and we have 4 other games that are winnable."The defense stunk it up (maybe no one on the board said this, but if the fat lady and her husband behind me stayed for two more minutes they were getting clackers upside the head"The defense did a lot of good things. Two turnovers, forced situations that resulted in two great special teams plays. What lost us the game, was stupid penalties, a lost QB, and 4 interceptions."The tailgating experience is driving people away"Funny that people who showed up for one game, and barely post on here (fans?) can come up and be the first negative comments about the experience and stadium. Funny that everyone from every media circuit has talked about how great everything has been. Funny how nobody talked about getting ticketed last week. People who act like asses and draw attention to themselves are going to get ticketed. It happens at OSU, Browns, and any other game you go to. "The Info isn't as good as you think"It is vastly superior to the MAC stadium I've been to. Peden, Glass Bowl, and WMU are probably the next three. Buffalo is passable, the rest are pure crap, sorry. But none of them come close to the Info. IU officials were impressed, as were there fans, and everyone who has been in it has had nothing but good things to say about it. The few people that had any issue are the same people that only come on and post after a loss or when something negative happens.

Hoo Hoo Hoosiers coming to town to show you wazzup!
g-mann17 replied to hoohoohoosiers's topic in Akron Zips Football
Reports from practice this week indicate that Bill Lynch has solved our offensive deficiencies and does not want to have to rely on defensive struggles to win games. Ben Chappell is a sleeping tiger who is about to be let out of the cage. We may even use a fake play or two(watch out for the fake punt lol).2-0 IU hoosiers!HOO HOO HOOSIERS!That's always interesting. "Hey the offense has been performing a lot better this week." Doesn't that just mean your defense has been performing a lot worse?Oh well we'll see how the Maroon and Cream Dream Team play away from home. -

I just don't see the Hoosiers scoring 45 goals, that's unheard of.Oh, he's talking about football, I didn't even know they played football in Bloomington, I mean you never hear anything about them. It will be interesting to see how they manage 45 points in one game when they have barely been able to do it in two.*edit - they haven't even got to 45 points yet, total 19 and 23 = 42 -
It does have to do with talent, but not in the areas where people look. The skill players at tOSU are for the most part just as fast and big as the players in the three major conferences. Where they have no athletic talent is on the offensive and defensive lines and LB positions. USC beat OSU because they created a match-up on 3rd & 17 late in the game where a far superior athlete was covered by a slow "suburban" LB from tOSU. Game over. With the addition of Pryor, they will see increasingly less skill players. Any kid with pro aspirations would not attend tOSU with him there. He can't throw the ball and the skill player would not be able to showcase his talents. Tressel is "all in" with Pryor. I'm not certain what he was trying to accomplish with him.tOSU is the best team in an increasingly bad conference. The do have to go to PSU and UofM is getting better. The Big Ten needs UofM to be good in orded for the country to take the league seriously.I've been reading the Columbus Dispatch a little this week. The coachers down there want Tressel fired for not winning big games. The truth is, he was not brought to tOSU to win big games. He was brought there to do two things: First, beat Michigan. He does that. Second, run a clean program. With a few exceptions, he runs a clean program. They did not hire him to win national championships. If they fire him, and they won't, they deserve their next John Cooper. You do realize that USC started 2 slow "suburban" linebackers on their ridiculously great defense from last year? Does Clay Matthews Jr and Brian Cushing ring a bell? They didnt exactly light up the combine with their 40 numbers. The difference is that Pete Carrol always had them in the proper position to make plays. He doesnt get middle linebackers matched up one on one with the best athlete on the field. When top 25 teams play (especially top 10), it doesnt usually come down to talent, it comes down to which coach makes the adjustments and puts their players in the best position to win. I could go on for days about how Urban Meyer, Pete Carrol and Les Miles made adjustments that Tressel never saw and couldnt deal with. He has his gameplan and that it is...he wont change from it. In the end it will be his demise.Unfortunately, we have seen the outschemed problem at Akron since I have watched in the mid 90's. I think we have upgraded our coaching staff to the point where, hopefully it is a thing of the past. We will see how this year unfolds.I do have to agree with Zipgrad here. There isn't really a talent discrepency and teams have been trying to get a running back or slot on a linebacker since the 70's (football is a game of mismatches look at Ozzie Newsome and Kellen Winslow Sr.). No the problem with the Big 10 is that the coaches in general are of an older generation. They play 60's ball while everyone else is perfecting 80's (run and shoot) and Urban Meyer ball. It's hard to put up points when your game plan is "get as many yards as possible then punt".Michigan is the only team in the Big 10 (Indiana and Illinois a little bit) that is really trying to go with a modern offense. They are going to be the ruling team in about 5 years unless drastic changes occur. With that said, this is a Zips board, and more importantly a Zips football portion of this. Big 10 is very much off topic.
