I find that interesting because the Carnegie Foundation does not rank universities. They only provide a portrait of what the universities offer, and the level of research they do. The only organizations that rank schools are for-profit magazines like USNWR.

9. Surprise team of the year: Temple -- The Owls are a team no one is talking about and that's probably a big mistake. The Owls finished third in the East last season and were a game away from bowl eligibility. Behind a new (unnamed) starting quarterback, they should be much improved this season.Talk about spin. Did this guy graduate from Temple or something? Temple finished 5-7 just like Akron. They were 1 win away from bowl eligibility not a bowl. Even at 6-6 chances are neither team get's a bowl invite last year. Then Temple is supposed to be improved behind an unnamed quarterback when the only games they won last year was under Dimichelle?pfft...

Best quote Even JoePa thinks Can't should be 1-AA.

Well if they quit than that is on them and not JD. Oh and no more recruits by the name of Jake, it's obvious they are quitters.

Not that you need it, or want it, but...I defend Zipgrad on this. Some of you are making a huge deal about nothing. And some of you are incapable of distingquishing between the University of Akron student that supports his team, but likes what he rooted for as a kid, and the University of Akron student that get's an education and wears Buckeyes garb the entire time and treats UA Athletics as glorified High School.

So I bought the book when I was picking up my $205 Business & Government book (I better get some money back at the end of semester this time) and promptly read the foreword when I got home. You people are getting your panties in a bunch about 4 paragraphs that basically say "Thank you for the opportunity, I loved the school, and everything that I am is because of the University of Akron. This book is full of information that even I wasn't aware of and this book will be great for all Zips fans."

212 Row 4.I always sat mid level at the Rubber Bowl. Close enough to read names far enough away to see the whole field. I think it will be a pretty nice view from the second level. Most importantly far enough away from the student section to appease the Mrs. No offense to the fanatical student section, my wife just doesn't want to have to put up with kids that are only 1-2 years out of being in her classroom.

You just did and BTW, Canal Park is a bad idea for UA to take over. One big reason: It's not on campus nor can it ever look like it is on campus. End of discussion. So far now: 51 for on campus 12 against on campusWhy do I even bother, but what the heck. I don't know what math you are doing but...Rec center parking lot [ 6 ] [9.09%] On CampusKaiser building location [ 3 ] [4.55%] DowntownCentral-Hower location [ 21 ] [31.82%] Off CampusLocation south of Exchange St. [ 6 ] [9.09%] Off CampusLocation North of campus [ 3 ] [4.55%] Off CampusMemorial Hall location [ 8 ] [12.12%] On CampusLocation east of campus [ 1 ] [1.52%] Off CampusOther location downtown [ 12 ] [18.18%] DowntownOther location on campus [ 6 ] [9.09%] On CampusFrom my calculationsOn Campus = 20Off Campus = 37Downtonw = 15So, off campus it is. I mean shouldn't you stick to your guns "conspicuously in the middle of campus"?Anyway, I just did this to point out the way you continue to skew facts and so that I can read the huge hissy fit you will have. Otherwise I and probably everyone else is pretty much done with this thread until we get another sound bite in about 2 - 3 months.

What a bunch of tools. He's an alumni. He wanted a career, so he moved on and eventually ended up a head coach at YSU. They could have given him a shot when we decided to go D-1 but they chose Faust. To act like he's some evil turncoat when the school never gave him a shot to take the reins, and to treat someone who is an alumni like they are trash and a worthless embarassment is completely assinine. I would expect that out of some of the younger fans but anyone with a sense of history for the team should hold the fact that he was coach and student at the university in higher regard. With that said (and Buckzip and Zipgrad can attest to this) I'm not a big fan of the OSU wearing, Zips "fan". But all of you sound like a scorned girlfriend. Why don't you go teepee his house or something sheesh, bunch of immature miscrients."OH BOO HOO!!! A coach, alumni, and athletic booster who donates thousands of dollars and time to the University that gave him his start got to write the foreword to a book about our football teams history. That might mean some crusty OSU fans may buy it and end up taking a small wrinkle of interest in our program BOO HOO!!! Whoa is us."

even betterI know the Akron City Series has at least 5 dates scheduled this year.
-
So are you saying our pass defense needs some work?Well they did pick off two passes, and they only gave up one touchdown, everything else were field goals.

We better beat those farm boys.

Heisman is standing in front of old Buchtel Hall, and that picture was taken from the UA website. So Tressel graduated from Akron as a grad student. He was still only a position coach here. The point is, even Heisman had ties to other schools (even while being here). Hell Heisman coached at 6 universities after us. And this was during an era when there wasn't even a thing called a "position coach" you were a coach or a player.Tressel is Alumni, he received his Masters here, he wanted to be a coach so he was a grad assistant under Dennison. The only tie that Heisman has to the school is 1 and half years of coaching, in which he wasn't happy because of the administration.Do I have respect for the Heisman legacy, hell yes, he would have stayed here for several years if not for the administration. However, you can't sit here and bad mouth Tressel when he is A) an alumi and B ) was here longer than Heisman. Do I hate OSU front running (never even went to the school but are college students elsewhere) fans? Yes. Do I think they used Tressel to help sell the book to people outside of the hardcore Akron fan? Yes. Does it bring the school money and recognition to our program? Yes. Will it build a fan base (even if only casual)? I sure as hell hope so.
-
This coming from a person with a Heisman picture where he is wearing a Univesity of Pennsylvania shirt. Do you not see the irony here? He's an Akron great because he is a graduate of the university not because he was a position coach.
-
Zach, fans who know also respect that Tressel is an Alumni, and one of the winningest coaches in the state.I would have preferred a retired coach or an NFL star (just to avoid looking like "me too" kind of thing), but you can't beat Tressel in regards to success from a coaching standpoint and he is one of the programs biggest cheerleaders.

Athletic Director to be named by end of the month
g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Other Sports
But the question remains...Who are the candidates?75 people showed to interest to the consulting group. Well there are 120 FCS schools. Only 68 are BCS programs. How many candidates are from those schools? -
and afterward by Bubba Walther

So you'd prefer more biased reporting? Guess you are a big FOX News watcher than.

Yes, and it is great, and I wish more of our successful football alumni did the same thing. (or at least were more visible when they did it)

Good lord I have never seen so many jealous, crybaby OSU haters. Seriously, the guy was the quarterbacks, receivers and running backs coach here for 3 years. He also got his masters degree at Akron. Why would you even bring an anti-OSU comment into this? Also, why would you be disappointed that he wrote the forward? In the end, these people are trying to see books. What sells more books and is better for the program, Jim Tressel doing this or Lee Owens? I just dont get you people. I can't imagine a Miami (Oh) fanbase being upset because Woody Hayes, Jim Tressel or Bo Schembechler gave the forward in their book. I mean...they all 3 did coach there.  Thank goodness OSU has you to protect it.I agree with you, Tressel is probably our most prestigious (living) coaching alumni. The problem being, he's still OSU's Coach. If he had retired ok. His tie to our school is 3 years. It would have been better to go and get oh, I don't know, NFL Man of the Year and future hall of famer Jason Taylor.Tressel is part of our history, and deserves some place in the book, but it does reek of "Please OSU fans, pay attention to us, Jim Tressel wrote something in here."And you have to realize that leaves a bad taste in a lot of hardcore Zips fans mouths.
-
I'm always interested in these stories. The "sure I went to Akron and got a degree, but why are they trying to better themselves, they are what they are" deal.If your school isn't trying to better itself, to make itself more visible, than your alma mater is doing you a disservice. The more notoriety that Akron gets, the better my degrees look. So every alumni should be cheering on the advancements the university is making.

Petition: Ending Open enrollment
g-mann17 replied to ksu sucks's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I you're 100% positive that this is where the university is going with open enrollment then I'm completely satisfied. I think that's a great idea.I honestly believe that. We have had continued enrollment increases for the last decade. We are trying to fill every seat at the University. Once that happens than you can be selective. It's the old adage "Beggers can't be choosers". We were desperate for students so we have to make ourselves available to all who are interested. There is also a small underlying committment that as an urban university we have to do what we can to make education available to everyone in the city that seeks it. But again as the student population grows on campus we can justify doing urban learning centers and college prep style centers off of campus. -
Petition: Ending Open enrollment
g-mann17 replied to ksu sucks's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Yeah it stinks, the national average is 53.7%. Your data is fine and dandy, but you see what I'm talking about with the fact that all students drop out. What would selectivity do for us? Bump us to Can't State levels? They are still below the national average (49%). Right now, as we are, we are more respected than Can't. We do tangible things right now, they did some LCD research 20 years ago. The problem being that we would not be where we are now, with out the open enrollment. We certainly would not be growing as fast as we are. And you still seem to think that Princeton Review and US News and World Report is who we have to impress. That is not the case. We are well respected as a University by peer institutions. Proenza is head of a coalition of university presidents that include Yale, OSU, and MIT. Of all applicants we accepted 75%. And 40% chose to go to school here.Again, if you want to cut off the growth of the University than by all means get rid of open enrollment. If you instead want the University to grow and necessitate better selectivity because of maximized class room space, than you leave things be. A high ranking in US News does not make us a top school. Being innovative and growing rapidly does. Being able to produce solid graduates through a tough curriculum does. -
Syracuse has 27 players leave team in the offseason
g-mann17 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
If they were clearing out all the underachievers wouldn't they only have about 12 players left?
