From what I have seen, OSU plays Toledo at Cleveland Browns Stadium on the 19th. That means that the original home opener (and inaugural game) would have been competing against OSU. Now the home opener competes against the USC vs. OSU game that is at 8 pm. So I would expect that we will play Morgan St. at high noon so as not to compete in anyway for viewers. In fact the reason the Kentucky game was originally on the 12th was so that our openning was in no way in the shadow of OSU being in Cleveland.

Not too bad, but 3 straight Fridays!!!! I can deal with the home one the day after T-giving as it basically plays out like a Saturday. The MAC really needs some help here though. Damn you Chryst!!!Better than Wednesdays.

No Miami (Ohio) again? What the hell?Though our "weeknight" games are all on Friday.

The new renderings are actually old renderings before the board approved anything. The block style dorms were before Ted Curtis put the finishing touches on the residence project (they will be of the same style as the honors and Exchange st dorms) and you will notice that in the stadium itself the north endzone facility is missing. The rendering is a stock photo that WKYC has.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but are you guys saying UA should take over NEOUCOM, and Can't & YSU should drop it? I don't really understand the whole debate. Some (including myself) feel that NEOUCOM would be better served if the medical school was in Akron, with the current buildings downgraded to a satellite campus or technology park. My specific comment was referring to the fact that UARF now handles both The University of Akron and Cleveland State's research operations. It has made both incredibly profitable (per investment dollar), so NEOUCOM would benefit immensely by being under The University of Akron Research Foundation.

A postgame quote from KD..."And the one thing I will tell you with our administration, that's the president, the board of trustees, athletic director, they're going to put money into the program, which is going to separate us before it's all over. And you like that pressure I put on you?"He knows that he has the support of the school. This time around you have administration that wants to improve all sports at the same time and not just do what is best for one program.

Just to prove a point. Memphis and Louisville both play downtown. Costs offset by the cities. If Akron and Summit County are willing to help pay for an arena. Then by god let them. Summa was ready to pay for a recreation center/rehabilitation clinic in 2000 before construction of the current rec center began. The student body voted this down. Forcing all of the students to foot the bill. The plans for the Summa Recreation Center would have dwarfed what we have now. Ocasek was to be replaced completely along with a new diving pavillion, plus state of the art rehabilitation equipment would have been readily available for the athletes. But instead every single student to this day is paying 300 dollars a semester to pay off the very nice rec center.

The difference is that Main and Exchange is less than a mile away (.7 to be exact). And is in the footprint of campus. The Polsky building and deck both belong to the U. CBA is on Broadway. The Rubber bowl was almost as far away from campus as Can't St is. (6 miles vs 11.5 miles). You can see the difference a 10 minute walk vs a 20 minute drive (assuming decent traffic).

As has been said by coaches and administration alike..."We have to think bigger than the MAC."

If there is one thing that I noticed (and I make fun of all the time) it's that since we showed we are a program capable and full of potential we are getting people talking about us. Some of these people a month ago would not have even acknowledged us. My questions for Zips Nation...Will this one gritty, gutsy performance in the NCAA tournament equal a larger fan following for next year? Has this hard working blue collar team, and incredibly determined coach, endeared itself to the city?

The JAR doesn't fill consistently because... a.) we don't get major media coverage consistently and let's face it, northeast ohio and Akron, are the biggest bunch of front-runners in the nation. If the team doesn't win they don't care and if the media isn't talking about it, they don't care. b.) It is not fan friendly. There is nothing for the average fan to do around the JAR. Gonzaga built a 6000 seat arena because their student body totals less than 5000. Duke (another arena suggestion) has a 9,000 seat arena and only 12,000 students. We have 25,000 students. For the city to have buy in, it is going to have to be useful for something other than college basketball and volleyball. Otherwise why even build an arena, we already have a 5,000 seat arena.

I also like the idea of a downtown arena. Some don't, but they also don't realize that Main and Exchange is inside the campus footprint. The issues are funding (who pays), control issues (who decides what events happen), and the big one, public buy in. As much as Summit County has been supporting the team the last week (and yeah just one week) the majority of them see any campus or downtown improvement as "unnecessary". With the current recession how do you justify what will at minimal be a 50 million dollar investment. Now with the negative out of the way, I fully believe the area needs and can support a 9-12 thousand seat multi-purpose venue. There will be nay sayers that say Cleveland has two and Youngstown has one, why do we need one. Well to this I say, Dayton (a town half our size) has two arenas Is only 50 miles from Columbus that has two arenas and is a short distance from Cinci that has an arena. Why does Dayton need two? Because Dayton, like Akron, is it's own independent city. People with vision know a downtown arena will work. They also know the potential for recognition to the city through events like the NCAA tournaments.

Some more Tournament Coverage of the Zips
g-mann17 replied to RootforRoo44's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
What year did Akron first play D-I basketball? This article says 1980-81. I swear they were D-I when I started there in 77.You must have studied history at Can't state We were D-II from 1975 - 1980, and began D-I in the OVC for the 80-81 season. -
D'oh, yeah I totally just blazed right through that one and didn't think. LOL Too redeem myself...Today's date 03/19/2009 13+11 (Z.I.P. can verify if I messed up there) equals 24 (Romeo Travis) equals 6 multiplied by the number of NCAA Tournament bids 2 (current) equals 12 (Dru Joyce III). Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce III should have gotten a chance to play in the NCAA tournament (along with several others but they are the ones directly tied to Lebron) And that is all the numerology I know.
-
The digits of the date today 03-19 add up to 3+1+9 = 23.
-
Does anyone know if they are planning on adding more seats in the gap shown in between the upper section and the club/lodges...seems to be avery large gap still or this is a bad angle. It would see from the renderings that there should be more capacity on that second level than there is now. Seems like a big chunk left to do?The stands will connect to the tower. However, they have to set up the external wall structure for the 4 lower stories before they start putting in the steal for the remainder of the upper deck. Otherwise it will be difficult (impossible) to move the fork lifters around down there carrying the external wall materials.
-
Lot of movement in the east stands upper deck. Not sure what they are doing though.
-
Zips hit a three during penalty time (at least I assume that's a rule in the MAC tournament, how else do you get 3 extra seconds?) to win it.

Their ay-crappy-doodoo colored background is hurting my eyes.

resource on UA projects and growth
g-mann17 replied to zen's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Selectivity into the school is over rated. A university's main purpose is to educate the population (the entire population). So if a 2.1 student with an 18 on their ACT want to go to class at Akron, fine. The fact is, if they don't work, they won't make it into a college (Busines, Arts and Science, Nursing, Engineering). The other "hidden secret" about open enrollment. It only applies to the schools main campus. Anyone can go to a Can't regional campus, anyone can go to an OSU regional campus it's because they don't have room on the main campus they get to be selective. Notoriety doesn't come from selectivity it comes from wealth of the school and the capability of its graduates. -
For the record we dumped out on them because buying out of the Wisconsin game last year was more expensive then buying out of the Kentucky games.
-
Hmm, what we know so far...9-5 @ Penn State9-12 ???9-19 Indiana9-26 ??? (Colorado has an open date, Miami is Trying to buy out of the 9-12 match up. However the Buffs are at WV on Thursday)10-3 ??? (Wyoming at BGSU, Bowling Green was willing to change this game to assist Miami in getting Kentucky, this is a good possibility)10-10 ??? 10-17 ???10-24 @ Syracuse10-31 ???11-7 ???11-14 ???11-21 ??? at least two of these November games will be Wedsday Thursday11-28 ???12-4 MAC Championship (@ Ford Field)We also know that we didn't play Miami last season, that means we will have to play them this season. Assuming an alphabetic rotation, and that Can't will never not be on the schedule, the most likely MAC East team we will not play is going to be Ohio. Temple and Can't will be home games, Buffalo and BGSU are both away games. Miami is a toss up, but I think we played at Miami the last time we faced them. That leaves one MAC West team for a home game. If logic prevails are home games should be Indiana, Can't, Temple, Miami, Directional Michigan (East or West), Random FCS school or Wyoming. We should have 6 home games for the first time in as long as I can remember.

I have to say, I amy need to change my quote now.Especially if he decides to hate 3 things "the devil, losing, and Can't"Haha! I saw this in class and nearly laughed out loud.I try.
