Zips Win! Christmas Gift also Aids the Z-Fund
g-mann17 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I don't really know what to think on this one. On one hand he's a famous Alumni, on the other hand he still coaches for what is technically a competing program. I think if he had retired, I would have no problem with this, but since he isn't retired I feel like it's kind of a smack in the face. -

I'm confused Cap. Are you saying he's ours? Or was it just an update? -
Gaffney Writes a Recruiting Column?
g-mann17 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I can honestly say that I don't miss Morgan at all. Gafney has been terrific as of late. I also don't miss Pluto's "Poor little Zips" columns either. -
Anyone got a read on the grey stuff that is going on the upper deck of the east stands? Is this part of the pre-form concrete? Also, did they hire some ADD construction workers or what? One minute they are adding the steel forms for the final portion of the east upperdeck and the next they are adding some non descript grey stuff.

JD Critiques, the 3-3-5, Recruiting etc.

58th nationally? What were they in the MAC? 4th in the MAC, 1st in the MAC for defensive scoring, 1st in passing defense. So I am going to say that the offense didn't "hide" anything. They were a top MAC defense. So yeah I'll take the 58th ranked defense when it's one of the best in the conference. By comparison the 12th ranked defense in the nation was Iowa. Iowa is 8-4 (which we wish we were because that would have won us a shot at the conference title). Iowa has some happy fans, but they have more disappointed fans because they had a mediocre year in their conference. (5-3 Buckzip would agree with me). The point is, right now, all we can care about is our performance in the MAC, and the only thing we should compare ourselves too is what won the MAC. Ball St ran their 3-3-5 effectively and was a top defense in the conference. So it is possible, are there other ways? Yes, but to say it's the base defense and not the lack of experience or the scheming is wrong. And my point is valid. Ball St. 12-0 struggled with two teams the entire season. Central Michigan and Navy. Their defense only allowed an average of 17 points per game. If we could say the same thing, we would all be renting hotel rooms in Detroit tomorrow. -
Bricklayer's Union? Where were they when Hipsher was playing? I doubt all those bricks he threw up was union work. or...You don't mess with the masons. You piss them off and one day we all wake up, and their will be just an open field with a few trees where the University used to be.

Very good post, at least I think, I'm one of those that Buckzip says "settles for mediocrity" so this could possibly only be an average post.On a side note, I always think it's funny that people don't understand that a 3-3-5 is a flexible defense. It's a lot like the 42 Defense in that you can change one person and you have entirely different group. A defense that has a ton of injuries and youth is destined to fail no matter what your base formation is. It still did what it was designed to do (cause a lot of turnovers).BTW, can anyone tell me how Ball State did with the 3-3-5 in the MAC where it's destined to fail with experienced and healthy defenders? I forget. -
First, You can finally see the the highest portion of steal going up for the eastern stands. As best as I can tell it will be a full 4 stories above street level. Second, does anyone know the real lighting structures that will be used on this side of the stadium? I've seen post lighting in the renderings but I could have sworn that I had seen arched ligthing. It would be one single structure that ran from the north to the south. similar to Canal Park.

Now everyone knows I'm all for JD but...5-7 A whole win more than last year.Vs. Non-Conference 2-2Vs. MAC West 2-1Vs. MAC East 1-4To me, that is unacceptable. It's all well and good that we have wins against BCS schools, but if you can't at least turn out a 3-2 record in the East there is a major problem. I'm not calling for coaching change, but there has to be something wrong with the philosophy here. The only positive I can even come close to taking out of this is that the entire Division has more experience on the field than we do. 3 of those loses were very close games. I am a believer that experience is what wins close games. However, how many of those games should really have been close?

Lee, let's look at bowl games. WMU has one, they lost, they will likely get another one this year, that they will lose. They have not won a MAC championship since Cubit took over. He benefitted from being in a conference with a down NIU and a weak Ball State. Then he get's to play EMU, Toledo, and a FCS team. My point is you say we settle for mediocrity and then compare us to a mediocre team in the west. We played them head to head last year and beat them, during a horrible year, at Waldo. Yet you want to compare us to them. Do I wish that we had the number of championships they have? Yes. Do I want us to be like them? No. They are mediocre and will likely stay middle of the pack until Hoke and CMU's coach move on. They will always be a MAC school and I think everyone on this board feels our school is trying to grow and shed the MAC.

Ball St 45 WMU 22. Ball St. 41 Akron 24MAC Championships since Cubit took overWMU 0 Akron 1now see i think that is enough said

Looks like what is going up on the east side is the steel that will support the pre-formed upper sections of stands. That is right. Awesome to see some progress in the cameras. I know they are working hard on wiring, plumbing, drainage and the lot, but when you only means of seeing improvement is a bigger structure it's nice to know they are still pushing hard to get this done.

Still pretty nice to see the stadium from that perspective.

I watched two measurements in a row where the first down marker was clearly on say the 42 and half yard line, and when they brought it out to the ball it was miraculously on the 42. How do you lose half a yard when you bring out the sticks? I was watching as an impartial fan, but the way the refs called the game last night felt to me as if there is a mandate by the MAC to give Ball State as much benefit of the doubt (cough cheat for them cough) as possible to maintain the national ranking.

I don't follow women's basketball much so I don't know how strong the Michigan program is; but, congratulations to the ladies and Coach Kest. Apparently that house cleaning was worth it.

I have to disagree with this. There are 3 areas to park at the Rubber Bowl, but only really 2 ways to get there. 224 or some verion of Waterloo Rd.In contrast, there will be several lots to park at for the 411. That can be accessed by Market, Exchange, Rt 8. Brown St., 59. There is also better flow to the highway and many more options for leaving the stadium. Traffic will be a non issue. This on a typical Saturday mind you. MAC weekday games, forget about it, it will be a nightmare. But I have no problem dealing with that.

I am with you and have preached the same thing about the fact it doesn't matter on the primary defensive formation. They chose the 3-3-5 because of the flexibility it has for personnel. Unfortunately we don't have that primary hero-back that we need (he's recovering from a shoulder injury and is hopefully going to be available next year) Williams was supposed to be, but he is designed more as a cover safety the a true Rover. Bottom line if a coach is an idiot for running the 3-3-5, then I guess Ball State has the dumbest 10-0 coach in the nation.
-
A family of 4 could have entered the Rubber Bowl for $12.00, instead of $4.00. The extra $2.00 per ticket wouldn't have deterred anyone. UA left $20,000 (or more) on the table just to pay homage? That's insane. Ask anyone @ UA how difficult it is to raise $20,000. How long (timewise), and how many people does it take to get an additional $20,000 for the Z-Fund? Four people making phone calls for a month? Probably. Maybe more.BTW - Acme-Zip tickets may have been $1.00 in the 70's, but they were $5.00 or BOGO in the later years.MUST...STOP....RANT....SO...DIFFICULT.....I appreciate your rant, I do, but if they can get 20,000 at a 1 dollar that is 20,000 and it is 10,000 more people buying concessions so it balances out.

Yay for cloudy! Now no fair weather fan has an excuse, no precip and above freezing.
-
Yeah I notice he doesn't refer to a home side or visitor side, just West concourse and east councourse and Press/suite tower, except for one point at the end. Which means the athletic department is making an effort to get rid of the Home side, Visitor side, high school, low division idealogy that plagued the Rubber Bowl.

We know that we play Penn State to open and Indiana on September 19.

Nick's Picks for MAC Football Week #12
g-mann17 replied to IBleedMACGreen's topic in Akron Zips Football
Ironically Buffalo has yet to beat a team with a winning record. Nice spin there Nicky. -
Why would you do that? maybe it is an inside joke that went over my head lol.To give them a better chance at beating Toledo, seeing as how his former team lost to Toledo.
-
Yeah he had a huge fumble recovery on a kickoff as one of those big special teams plays.
