Our inability to make the outside shots in the beginning of the game is what killed us. What was our shooting percentage at the end of the first half? Until our shooting guards and small forwards start hitting the wide open shots they were getting, we will struggle. That compounds itself, because the more we struggle on offense the worse we play on defense. It looks to as though we start to take more chances on defense when our shots aren't falling which just made things worse. McNees is killing us with his inability to make a shot. He missed at least 3 wide open lay ups last night. Dambrot needs to shake up the starting lineup so we can get out of the gate better.Halftime stats of note: Akron 21, Ohio 37. The Zips are shooting 28.6 percent, compared to Ohio at 51.9 percent. The Zips hold a 17-12 rebounding edge. Akron has 10 turnovers and four assists; Ohio has five turnovers and 12 assists (Cooper has 10 alone). Tommy Freeman leads the Bobcats with nine points, all on 3-pointers. The Bobcats have made 6-of-11 3-point attempts; Akron is 1-for-6. Marshall has two points and no rebounds.

I watch football, and it's obvious to me when a somebody (Colts last weekend) gets out coached. Does anybody think that KD was out coached last night?
Yes

The originator of the massive thread I've been following posted a really brief summary today that gives a good idea of the scope of the FBI investigation. It appears that a lot more will become public by the end of January. Here's the brief summary of what to expect:
The FBI and DOJ are involved for three reasons. BingoGate, Lowder & Co., and the shopping of players. Look at the charges and understand the severity of each segment.
(1) BingoGate is an attack on the very foundation of Democracy - Maybe if it involved just one crook and politician, they would not be as concerned. But the depth and magnitude of this Network, combined with the ulterior motive to create such an elaborate organization, the Feds don't care for what they tried at all. Everyone's head will be had before the day is done.
(2) Shopping of Players is the least severe of the three but it deals with human traffic commerce, concentrated in urban areas preying on economically challenged youth - tantamount to slavery - again not good.
(3) With Colonial/Lowder, the Feds are looking for $2.9 Bln (that's with a "B") and they're pissed because we as taxpayers had to foot the bill to cover Dear Bobby's overdraft account. They want their money back, and they want it now. They don't take kindly to swindlers such as these and their conviction rate is pretty high.
This is all interesting stuff; however, I'm not sure what direct ties there are to college football. The only link is a guy who was involved in bribes is also a Auburn booster. That's not unusual as a person who could issue a $180K bribe probably is one of the few people in Alabama who could purchase a casino.
There is an interesting logic to conspiracy theorists. If a conspiracy theory is proved wrong, to the conspiracy theorist, the conspiracy only becomes that much great and complex. Sort of like the people who think JFK was shot by the mob or Castro or "others". JFK was shot by a guy out of a building window.
This is what I think happened. Cam Newton father probably talked to some parents when his son was at Florida and realized some of them took large sums of money. Some parents drink before games and they all sit together. Loose lips sink ships. The Newtons didn't take any money on his way to Florida or the church is father preached out of in Atlanta wouldn't have been a falling down mess. When his son left Florida to go to JUCO, he realized Cam's rerecruitment to another school could land him a large sum of money to remodel his church. Newton's father actually got to live the old saying, "If I knew then what I know now, I would have..." I think that is where the story ends. I really don't care what posters on a thread have to say about it unless they work for the NCAA, FBI or they are a Federal prosecutor.
So you agree that the real reason that the SEC is so good, is that they are all a bunch of cheaters?

Since we have had two NFL'ers since I have followed the team, I don't buy it for an second. Derr & Alcorn. Both recruited to kick in the Rubber Bowl too. It's hard to predict. Apparently it's very difficult to find a kicker for the college level. Nevermind that it seems like every team in the country from the BCS all the way down to D-III can find one that is more consistent than ours were.Zac was the last reliable kicker we had. His wife Hilary is a former Zips Dance team member.
On Wednesday, the Rev. Zac Derr was named pastor at the Wadsworth campus. Derr, a former University of Akron football standout, and his wife, Hilary, live in Wadsworth with their two children — Jillian ''Davy,'' 3, and Andrea, 1.Derr, 31, began attending the Chapel while at the university and became involved in the college ministry. During his junior year, while studying emergency management, he felt God calling him to the ministry. After completing his undergraduate degree, he took a detour into the world of professional and semi-professional football, trying out for the Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Falcons and landing positions in the Arena Football League.
His last attempt to venture into the pros, in Atlanta, ended in 2006 with an injury during the first day of training camp. He came back to Akron and returned to the Chapel, working full time with young married couples and earning a graduate degree in religion from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He most recently served as family pastor at the Chapel, overseeing the children's, youth, marriage and family ministries.

The next few weeks will tell us whether the Cavs think he is NBA worthy or he is just someone to fill a spot on the roster of a D-league team in order to showcase some other player. I hope he is having fun.
Who would he be showcasing? Seems like he's the best player on the team.
Maybe this guy.
Alabi Returns to BayHawksToronto center reassigned to Erie
Erie, Pennsylvania, Thursday, January 6 – The Toronto Raptors have reassigned center Solomon Alabi to their NBA Development League Affiliate, the Erie BayHawks. Alabi (7-1, 250 lbs) is on his second assignment with Erie this season.
During Alabi’s first stint in Erie he started all seven games he appeared in and averaged 8.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots in 22.9 minutes per game. He has appeared in just five games for the Raptors this season playing a total of 15 minutes.
Alabi, a rookie out of Florida State, will participate in the team’s practice on Thursday and be in uniform for Erie on Friday night.
Alabi was selected in the second round, 50th overall, of the 2010 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks and traded that night to Toronto.
The BayHawks (11-6) return home Friday night to face the Sioux Falls Skyforce (2-12) at 7 pm, when former BayHawks guard Maureece Rice is expected to be in uniform for the Skyforce after being dealt from Erie earlier this week.

I watched quite a bit of the game last night and even though Nate looked good, I was concerned with how he was being used by the team. With as bad as the Cavs are playing right now and the amount of injuries they sustained, this is Nate's best chance to get a shot in the NBA. On offense it appeared that he was not part of the game plan. He stood around outside of the three point circle while the team tried to work the ball down low to the other big men. No plays were run where he was an option. Most of his points came in transition or after an offensive rebound. The next few weeks will tell us whether the Cavs think he is NBA worthy or he is just someone to fill a spot on the roster of a D-league team in order to showcase some other player. I hope he is having fun.

I sent him an E-mail.

Maybe we should ask him? It would be kind of cool.

Sunday morning thoughts:
Abreu had some nice plays down the stretch, but I thought he was pretty ho-hum for most of the game. He wasn't penetrating the way he had been in previous games and he wasn't up in his man's grill getting steals the way we have seen in the OOC season. Still, it was nice to see him finish drives at the end of the game when it matters. So nice to have a guard who can finish plays at the hoop for once. He got a taste of what this rivalry is about last night and he's only going to get better as time goes on.
I think he played his best defensive game so far. He didn't get any steals, but he also didn't let his man go by him for a layup. I only saw one time where I thought he took a big gamble on defense. Overall I thought the Zips played pretty well defensively. The only low point was letting Sherman take those uncontested threes in the first half.

What was really impressive was the way Zeke handled Greene. He was defending Greene most of the night and kept him from being a factor. The other impressive performance was from Rico. Played under control most of the night and those 2 baskets he made late in the game were huge.

Maybe the title of this thread should be State of ohio moves forward to the 1930's. I know you young guys haven't been around long enough to know that 75% of what comes out a politicians mouth is nothing more than hot air, but that $400 million dollars was not going to buying anything that would ever resemble high speed rail.
The title of this thread has nothing to do with trains. It has everything to do with raising the speed limit to 70mph, however.
The thread title is still wrong. Ohio had 70mph speed limits in the 60's and 70's, until Jimmy Carter decided we all couldn't go faster than 55mph.

Zips 79 Can't 61
A lot of frustration is unleashed on the chickens tonight.
I like your optimisim CK. But since this is the Can't game anything can happen. Its hard to get a feel for how this will play out tonite. In the past we had played several common opponents before meeting the flushes, so I could get a good feel for where we stood. The Zips need to contain Greene and shoot a decent % themselves and we will win easily.

I know you young guys haven't been around long enough to know that 75% of what comes out a politicians mouth is nothing more than hot air, but that $400 million dollars was not going to buying anything that would ever resemble high speed rail.
Ultimately, Plain Dealer columnist and former editorial director Brent Larkin wrote: "Voters never warmed to the idea of spending hundreds of millions on a passenger rail project that would have taken riders from Cleveland to Cincinnati over a period an hour and 15 minutes longer than it would have taken on a New York Central train in 1935."He referred us first to a year-old feasibility report on the proposed Cleveland-to-Columbus-to- Cincinnati Amtrak service."This is the schedule Amtrak said it would run, and the schedule Ohio included as part of its application to the feds for the $400 million," Larkin said. "No other schedule was ever formally provided to the feds."The proposed schedule shows a 255-mile Cleveland to Cincinnati trip taking 6-1/2 hours. The first daily train would leave Cleveland at 6:30 a.m. and arrive in Cincinnati at 1 p.m.
Larkin then shared a railroad timetable from New York Central Lines, effective Feb 3, 1935. It showed a departure time of 3:10 p.m. from Cincinnati and an arrival in Cleveland of 8:20 p.m., for a travel time of 5 hours 10 minutes -- an hour and 20 minutes faster than the 3C line.
The Ohio Department of Transportation responded in September with a new average estimate of 50 mph and "speed up to 79." It shortened the Cleveland-to-Cincinnati trip to 5 hours 12 minutes.
But, not so fast.
As an October story in the Columbus Dispatch noted, ODOT itself had said a year earlier that the trip couldn't be made in less than 5 hours 20 minutes -- even if the trains didn't stop. ODOT’s revised schedule hadn't even been seen by the three freight lines that own the tracks the 3C passenger trains would use, putting its feasibility in serious doubt. And, no matter how weak or strong its support, the optimistic revision still comes up longer than the best rail time of 1935.
"The schedules speak for themselves," Larkin said.
We rate his statement as True.

Playing to win puts the focus on winning and keeps you on your toes. Playing not to lose puts the focus on losing and sets you back on your heels. You're more likely to win by staying on your toes than on your heels.
Losing stinks, period. But, as a fan, I'd much rather see my team lose while aggressively trying to win than lose by desperately trying not to lose.
My friends and I were actually lamenting the same thing from the stands watching the game. It seemed we were doing a great job pushing the ball and beating ORU in the full court and breakaways. Then shortly before halftime the style of play began to change...I'm not sure if it's a lack of depth thing or conditioning or what (though neither of the other two freshmen saw the floor), but it was frustrating. We settled into the halfcourt game, had very little inside-outside action and quickly melted away our lead(s). One thing that would help, in addition to some stronger post defense from Zeke and Nik, would be to post up BMcKnight. He probably has the best post game on the team inside of about 8 feet.
Its simple, when #11 is in the game things happen. He only played 18 minutes and it would be interesting to see the +- for that time.

I moved it to basketball since this is supposed to happen during a basketball game. What does this topic have to do with Football?I remember when coach Lolla would come out during half time and bounce a ball off his knee for entertainment. Now the team is celebrating a national title during this time. How far they have come!
Agreed. I would hope they take as long as they need during halftime. Thanks for putting the topic in the correct forum.

My poster/schedule/magnet/billboard marketing campaign for next year has a photo of AA & Z with the title "RICO & THE MAN"
(we can probably only market to the 35ish and older group though)
Someone gave me a game ball signed by this years team. Abreau's signiture was; Rico P.R. #11
-
I agree with Dave, Rico is the key to this team. When he is on the court the Zips have the kind of ball movement and defensive attitude that has been lacking for a while. He is still a freshman, but the Zips have finally found their true point guard.
-
I will admit that I have a very loud voice, but this happened with a minute or so left on the clock and the Zips clinging to a 1 point lead. If a fan is not going to cheer his team on during that situation, when else?
Earlier in the second half, I took advantage of the dead crowd to remind Bo Boroski and his crew, that the game was being played at both ends of the court. During ORU's second half opening run the refs swallowed their whistles on every Zips possession, but a bad facial expression by a Zip defender earned ORU a trip to the line. Soon after pointing this out the Golden Eagles were whistled for 5 fouls on one Zips possession!
If only a few thousand fans are going to attend, somebody has to make some noise!

it was the best high school basketball game between to excellent teams that i had witnessed in a long time.combs played about the best defense that you could have on justice but he was pulling up from the volley ball line with a hand in his face and still drained them,he was like 13 for 20 from three point line.both benches played well also.pretty evenly matched teams it should be another good one when they play eachother again on jan.25 at peebles.congrats to both teams on a great game and excellent sportsmanship. -
