  1. I have a letter written to my grandfather from a kid he taught in high school in WVA in the 1930's. The kid was a star athlete and was recruited to play football at Tennessee. UT was a powerhouse program at the time. In the letter he describes how demanding the football coaches were and how he wished he was getting Paid more than he agreed to for all this hard work. He even related that the baseball coach wanted him to come out for the team but he wasn't willing to pay him enough to make it worth his time. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

  2. Good win yesterday, here is what I would ask Rob in his season wrap up press conference.

    1. Coach, you have been in this role for about a year now. Looking back and self assessing what if anything would you have done differently or what did you change throughout the year which was a positive?

    2. The team played better in the 2nd half of the year, was competitive and gave great effort when they could have folded. That is a testament to the staff and players. You have consistently praised Mike Thomas and Alex Allen for their leadership. Who are the leaders of the team now? Are you comfortable that enough key people are ready to assume leadership roles?

    3. Over 90% of the carries went to Alex Allen and Nate Burney. With their graduation, the only players on the roster with any significant carries are Broderick Alexander and Dale Martin. How is Broderick healing? What does Martin have to do to see the field?

    4. 2 of your key recruits who played fairly well, Antoine Russell and Richard Hall were suspended the last couple of weeks. Are they still part of the program?

    5. As a follow up, more than several players left the program or were asked to leave throughout the year. Do you expect more attrition in the offseason? Has everyone else bought in to your philosophy?

    6. Are you planning to recruit at the JUCO level? If so, heavily or just a couple of guys?

    7. The top 2 playmakers, LaFRance and Carter are graduating. Is there anyone currently in the program ready to step up into a playmaker role? Who are you high on?

    8. Assessing the program, where do you still see holes that need to be corrected? What is your plan to correct them?

    9. While many areas could be improved, the QB always gets the most scrutiny. How did Patrick do this year? Has he done enough the be the starter? Will there be open competition in spring ball?

    10. Are there any injuries that will hold guys out of active conditioning come the 1st of the year?

    11. Were you pleased with your assistants? Barring any leaving of their own accord, do you forsee any changes in the offseason?

    12. I may have missed this but did not see Doug Richardson walk the field yesterday with the seniors. Is he coming back next year? Further, is there anyone else listed as a senior who has gained another year of eligibility?

    13. Your numbers are low and if I understand correctly, we can only sign 25 guys per year. That will take several years to get to the full allotment of 85 scholarship players. Is there anyway around this?

    14. Will there be any scheme changes?

    15. Finally, everyone on this board cares deeply about the Zips and wants the program and you to succeed. It's been almost 25 years since moving to Div 1 and we are still waiting for sustained success. You mentioned several times that progess is being made, progress that can't be seen and eventually it will be seen on the field in wins. How close are we to seeing it? I know this is one you probably can't answer. On the outside looking in, I don't see how you can have this much turnover and get competitive in a year or two unless you get a couple studs and some luck. Tell me that I am wrong.

Best of luck Coach in offseason recruiting.

Based on past performance, I wouldn't expect much in the way of answers to any questions. :nutkick:

  3. There was a minute and a half left in the game, we have ball...the rowdies try chanting "stand up"... no one did it...we miss the shot, and then CSU scores...

Some of you think that the soccer and basketball teams aren`t playing with a killer instinct...i wonder why...they have NO motivation because fans like we had in the reserved sections DID NOT stand up for the most important/crucial part of the game...this was on STO and the fans did not do their part....if this keeps happening, Can't will beat us twice again this year and so will ohio...and soccer will lose this weekend to Indiana...

Sure, Dambrot will say in the postgame that the atmosphere is great...but he HAS to say that...or you fans will boycott and not come...

If the atmosphere never changes, by doing the simple things to keep this team motivated, then all this program will be is what it is now...

I didn't notice the fans letting CSU's guards drive around them for a dozen or so layups. Must have happened while I was in the restroom.

  4. Fun with small sample sizes!

Come on. Let us enjoy it while it lasts. For a few days, at least, we can the Zips are a top-ten calibre team.

Now, next season we might be able to say that all season long and not be lying once our secret weapons join the team. ;)

I've just heard snippets about these guys. Who are they, where'd they come from and how good are they supposed to be?

  5. Why, oh why is attendance so low?

Maybe the University can commission a $100,000 study to determine the cause of the empty seats?

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night."

So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports.

Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So They created two positions: a time keeper and a payroll officer, then hired two people.

Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?" So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an

Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one Year and we are $918,000 over budget, we must cutback." So they laid off the night watchman.

  6. A lot of angry Rowdies tonight. The Band has moved from the south side to the north side seats and is taking up the entire side nearly. It's kicked out a bunch of regulars on the North side (me included). I'm not too worked up over it but a few others are. It makes you wonder why they dont just sit up top in their designated area?

Yes. They could have at least provided a warning that they were going to double in size and then kick out about 75 Rowdies from sitting down below.

If their job is to fire up the crowd then they need to move closer to the part of the crowd that actually needs firing up, not next to the group that would make noise regardless of the band's proximity.

Disgusted with the band arrangement. Was told that it is for just one game. A number of St. V band

members merged in with the Zips regulars.

What I don't like is the loud and often ill timed band playing in the ears of the Zips players and

coaches during time outs. The overly aggressive band leader seems to think the game is about him.

Fire the band. Bring back the Rowdies.

First of all, as someone mentioned earlier, this was for only one game because we were joined by high school kids, which was KD's idea in response to someone in athletics wanting to charge the highschool band members for being at highschool band day for football. So you can yell at Dambrot for inviting the highschoolers. I personally find it to be an excellent recruiting tool. And it was just for tonight

Next, we were originally told that we would be in the upper former band section, and started to set up there, until were were told by someone in facilities that we were going to be on the floor on the north side. This all happened before our director showed up, so don't act as though he just decided we were going to do that ourselves.

Also, I don't know how we have been "playing in the ears of the Zips players and coaches during time outs," when we are never on the same side as the team. And as far as our "overly aggressive band leader," he is often times responsible for starting cheers that the ROWDIES will join in on, sometimes. I also don't really know if I should aplogize for us being loud, you know, since we are a pep band.

As far as notifying people about our temporary placement, I texted one of my friends on the ROWDIES board at 5:50 telling him about it and he told me that he already knew. So really they could have communicated it to you, but I think they probably thought what everyone else thought, that it wouldn't really change anything. The spots were not available either way, sorry.

I don't know why you would recommend firing the band and bringing back the ROWDIES, as though us existing has somehow reduced the number of ROWDIES. If there is a lack of space then that is failure of the facilities, not us. If people can't cheer because they aren't on the floor, they are bad fans. I know I cheer for the whole game, so I am not taking away from anything another ROWDIE would bring. I also try my best to get other fans in the stands to chant but they are lazy and passive and only care when something big happens. Also, I think that the games would be pretty quiet without a band, maybe that's just me though. If that isn't enough for you, we have been told by players that they enjoy having us there.

Finally I would like to say that this isn't coming from some random band kid who only comes to games as a member of the band. I am in the ROWDIES and have stood directly behind the goal screaming durning every soccer game this year. I am proud to be a member of both of these groups.

    Thanks

Right on Yaz. The band does a great job of both playing and cheering for the team. The Rowdies have nothing on the band, but dare to complain? Until I see more than a few hundred Rowdies show up, I'm with the band. :nutkick:

  7. Okay, I'll start this post by admitting this :horse: , but there is an update. It looks as though Howards football career might be over. He did appear in the one game mentioned by Dr Z, but that was it.

    What Happened to Eric howard?

hes actually back here in north canton working at grand slam again. he hurt his knee in practice and is done playing football. he said his career is done

  8. Zips Signee Dylan Brumbaugh was named 1st team Div 1 all NEO Inland. Congrats and lets hope you have a stellar career at UA. I had the chance to see Dylan play 6 times this season and he is going to be a good player for the Zips. Sure would be nice if the Zips could land the RB from Marlington.

    All NEO Inland

    Dylan Brumbaugh, Green

    6-5, 265, Sr., OL

Akron recruit. Two-way force in the trenches. Helped pave way for Green to gain 368.4 yards a game.

  9. Going off topic, but Zips Win comment on the tents/canopies prompted this question. Who is responsible at the University or athletic department for "licensing" products like that? A couple of other examples are fatheads, Tervis tumblers, etc. I can go buy these products for other MAC teams...why not us?

The athletic Depatment. They are in panic mode down there right now. There have been numerous meetings with other department heads in the last 2 weeks trying to come up with some way to get the students to come to another home game.

  10. Its always better to have a high list price for your product. The way to be successful is to inflate prices for a period of time, then offer significant discounts. The discounts should go to your best customers. The guy only coming to 1 game per year should pay full price. Make it a real deal$$$ to be a season ticket holder. Offer season tickets for $25-$30 for GA. Reserved on the edges for $75-$80. Do what ever you need to do to get fans into the stadium and hope that you build a following. If you have success on the field you can slowly lower the amount of discount. Until this program starts to win again, its going to be a tough sell.

  11. Alex Abreu could emerge as the starting point guard as a freshman.

If Alex is PG and Zeke and Steve can work an inside out game, Steve should get great looks at open threes. I think we go as far as Zeke and Steve working together takes us. I'm hoping (getting excited) to see a different style of game from last year.

I don't like the "slow as molasses" comment by KD. confused0006.gif I'll have to evaluate that myself on Friday. A better evaluation will come on Tuesday, but I'll still be able to tell by Saturday morning.

    Nice article BTW

I think its a bit of hyperbole. Abreau is pretty "Thick" for a 5'9"point guard. He has a barrel chest and a thick neck which is uncommon for a guy his size. I think KD mentioned elsewhere that he could use to loose about 7-8 pounds to improve his conditioning. He looked plenty quick to me last Friday.

  12. If Rasor's source is correct, I think i figured out where at least one of the extra scholarships is coming from.

This might be the last season you see Cvetinovic. He is only a junior, but will have graduated in advance of next season. His goal is to play professionally in Europe. If that can happen, it will be a difficult decision for him.

Is Brian Walsh (the Xavier transfer) eligible to play this year? Where does he fit in, PT-wise?

He is not eligible this year. He has to sit per NCAA rules. He can practice with the team.
