Another Possible 2014 Recruit - Noah Robotham
Captain Kangaroo replied to Akron1's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
So you are saying in Kretzer had to sit out a season for concussion-related symptoms (Note - completely hypothetical situation), that couldn't free-up a scholarship? I guess if I cared more I'd research it, but I don't...so I won't. -
Another Possible 2014 Recruit - Noah Robotham

So who's gone? I'm guessing Evans will be given the opportunity to find another team...probably Div 2, unless he can graduate this summer. Betancourt gone? Could be. If Robotham is as good as advertised, Betancourt will likely be back to an appropriate 5-8 minutes per game. Maybe he won't like being a back up? Maybe he knows that's as good as it's going to get for him, and he embraces it? Other than the mercurial Harney potentially walking off into the sunset, I don't see any other possibilities. Ibitayo's going to play his senior season @ UA. Maybe Kretzer gives his head a year's rest and redshirts this year (wild-ass speculation only)? Oh, and what if Abreu comes back? Too bad the BB golf outing isn't tomorrow. -

I would have hoped to see a kicker signed before a punter. -
2A is the second smallest school size in Florida. Many of his games seem to be played on fields without Visitor's stands? I trust Bowden's knowledge of what it takes to be a D-1 QB. He must see something.

I'm tired of sin taxes. The lowest of the low-hanging fruit...tax cigarettes and alcohol. After 230 years, that's as creative as anyone can get?

Malcolm Walters PG 2014 verbal
Captain Kangaroo replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Wasn't Darryl Roberts a scholarship player who decided to quit? Then returned to the team after his scholarship was given to another player? That is a far cry from being a true walk on. Jesus...I know the quality of posts on ZipsNatiion has eroded recently, but don't think everyone is stupid here. Roberts was a scholarship player who screwed himself out of a scholarship. Tim Carroll was a great kid, but his contributions on the court were virtually nil. Pick the level of good sports talk up here, people. Please. -

There hasn't been a walk on under Dambrot who's played even a slightly significant role on the Zips basketball team. With our PG position as it is, it unfortunately wouldn't shock me if a walk on Freshman could see significant minutes. I do like the kid from Houston. Even at 150 lbs, I'd pencil him in as the starter next year. He can pass, AND make an open lay up. That's good enough for me. -
RB transfer from Colorado State
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Awesome pick up by the Zips. I am shocked that there is even one iota of doubt about it. As solid-yet-unspectacular as Chisholm is, there's been no one I've seen with the ability to fill his shoes. Now we have one. Hopefully one of the young new guys steps up this summer to be our #2 man. Kennedy-Biggs. Hendry-Payne-Gray. We have nothing like those tandems in 2014. At least that I've seen. The summer will reveal a lot. -

We are going to need to switch host servers. Please bear with us. Not something we are enjoying right now. -
14 women's scholarships and four MAC-level coach's salaries are an "unbelievable drain" on a 26,000 student university? Who knew?

I am concerned about Carmelo Betancourt QB-ing our basketball team. I'm not concerned about Pohl QB-ing our football team.

Aside from displaying an obsession for repeating adverbs, this is a pretty nice, comprehensive column from Hustlebelt. Al Kerkian's name brings back memories...anyone else used to go to Sarah's downtown back in the late 80's? That was a great bar. Live jazz. Free chips and dip (key item for a poor college kid at the time).

Surprised no one has mentioned this? If was a popular topic at the spring game tailgate.

A few quick-hitters from Saturday's game - Awesome day for spring football. And the community seemed to take advantage of it. I've definitely seen smaller crowds at actual Zips games. Tailgating was great. Wish I had arrived earlier. Lot 9 was near capacity and rocking?! Very nice job by UA Marketing. Autograph line was well organized, BEER sales!? And full-blown concessions?! My biggest 2014 football concern was the potential drop off in the secondary. I thought the DB's played great. I foresee no drop off. They might even be better? Hirschman looks ok, and will be a solid #2 option. Threw a nice 55yd completion, and didn't hop around the field to celebrate afterwards. Good step forward for him. I think the OL will be fine once they aren't a split squad. Poor Rodney Carrol got the short straw being lined up against Okafor. The redshirt Fr. was beaten left, right and straight ahead by the heretofore unknown Senior DL. Can Okafor repeat that performance in the Fall? Wow...what a gift if he can play like he did on Saturday. More than one person commented that #99's performance reminded them of another famous 6; 6", 230 lb #99 who played for the Zips a couple decades ago (#33 at that time). Pohl is the man. No use wasting a scholarship on a 5th year transfer at QB. I can't wait to see what he can do with a two good wheels and last year's experience under his belt! Woodson isn't ready to challenge for a starting QB job. But I like how he looks. Thick, strong kid. It will be fun to watch him and Kincade battle for the #2 spot next season, unless Woodson would want to get on the field faster than 2016 and convert to WR or defense (LB or S). MTB continues to be an enigma. I don't know that he's one of our top 3-4 WR's at this time. Pratt looks very good. A breakout season looms. Chisolm still appears to have no competition for the #1 RB slot. Neither Morgan, Lawrence or Jones showed much. But with a split OL, maybe they didn't get a fair opportunity. We'll see how it goes in the summer. Our DL is pretty strong. Walking through the autograph line it was apparent that this will be the physically largest, strongest Zips team we've ever fielded. Keonte Hollis is a beast. Yet another player who can really dominate in the fall. I agree that this Zips team should be bowl eligible in 2014. And anything less than 7 wins will be considered "underachieving." Go Zips!

Topic to Which a Zips Fan Can Relate
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
While that game could be described as comical...historical...memorable...and a lot of other things (depending upon your point of view), in 2014 I am ecstatic to have Chuck Amato directing the Zips defense. Under unbelievable circumstances the guy has out-worked, out-recruited, out-motivated and out-strategized pretty much every offense he's faced. The 2013 Zips D was as good as I've ever seen it. He meshed a bunch of transfer mercenaries and Ianello leftovers into one of the top defenses in the MAC. Amato was a goofball in 2006. He's indispensable to the Zips in 2014. I hope he's on our sideline for the next 10 years. -

Captain Kangaroo replied to Akron1's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Glad we are still in the running. We need him. There's no other true mid-major school where you can essentially guarantee you'll be playing in multiple conference championship games and experience multiple NCAA appearances during your career. And be guaranteed to have the same coach all 4 years. Good fit for both Noah and the Zips. Hope to see the signing today. -
