Regardless - Cheater referees and opponent thuggery will doom the Zips. We have no hope. Seed schmeed.

Akron vs Ken+, (hopefully) home season finale.
Captain Kangaroo replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
The Zips were slow and lazy. That's how K.e.n.t's string bean "bigs" got endless dunks and rebounds. And how K.e.n.t.'s guards got easy, uncontested lay ups. It wasn't until the 10 minute mark that Tree started going strong to the glass. Then he made shots. He was able to get put-backs after misses. He got to the free throw line. We began whipping the indersized K.e.n.t. like we were capable of whipping them. If at any time in his life Mark Henniger is considered too rough for Akron bigs, we should immediately drop the Zips men's basketball program and go watch rifle. -

Ugly win, but that's how we roll in 2014. We aren't a sexy fine-tuned machine. Our meat grinder team just needs to find a way to win by one every night. Watching sausage get made is gross, but the end result tastes delicious. Keep fighting Coach Peters! And congrats to Frenchy! Thank you Zips for the #4 seed and for beating K.e.n.t. Someone has to win the tournament. Why not the Zips? -

Tree played soft for the first 30 minutes. Consistently settled for jump shots and fade-aways instead of taking it strong to the hole. Big Dog played like a 12 year old basset hound. As skinny and undersized as K.e.n.t.'s interior was, they did whatever they pleased for the first 30-or-so minutes. It sucks when the K.e.n.t. offensive haiku is: dunk, dunk, dunk, dunk, dunk Layup, layup, layup, dunk layup, dunk, dunk, dunk On the positive side - Props to Deji for stepping up and putting the team on his back. He was the difference-maker in an otherwise low-level UA-K.e.n.t. game (by the standards set over the past decade). McAdams made the most of his minutes as did Evans. Aside from the late missed FT's, Tree manned-up the final 10 minutes and pushed us over the top. Take the ball to the glass and you either score or get fouled. Fade away and you miss more than you make. And you don't get fouled. And, Diggs should never be our primary ball-handler in a half court set w/ < 1 minute remaining. The ball is more-likely to go off his hip or into the 3rd row than it is to go into the hoop. -
I like the idea of the Thursday night opener. The quicker football arrives, the better. Summer night...take off the afternoon from work...the only drawback is Friday morning. I'll probably take an hour or two PTO for that one too.

If Evans can hit his open looks, we'll win. If he doesn't, and Ken.t can slack off on the perimeter, Tree will get stifled. We can lose. McAdams can obviously help there too, but I can't see him playing more than 20 minutes. The other guys need to hit their open looks. Or in Harney's case, don't shoot the 3 at all. Finally - Whether or not Dambrot's chioce of the word "quit" was correct or not, the Zips played with no sense of purpose vs. OU. Even Tree went through the motions, putting up soft shots underneath when no defensive player was nearby. Conversely, they played with great purpose against Buffalo. It was a completely different team vibe. If they play with that intensity again, we win by 20. And we've sucked on ESPN2 thus far. It would be nice to put on a good show for the people on the BW-3 bar stools across the nation tonight. BAC the Zips! -

There is no player or coach on the face of the earth thast whines like Hurley. I've never seen anything like it. I don't think his dad "coached" that way? After his review of the video, I would be curious to hear our new friend's opinion on whether Reggie would be faring similar to Hurley had he stayed @ UB? I think he would have been similar.

Nice find. Curious to see if our new member w/selective memory calls that a clean off-ball screen.

In the same light as OJ's glove not fitting, there was no video of the rabbit punch, so it must not have happened. But moving onward - McCrea is the 2014 POTY. It will be interesting to see if he gets his ring this year, or simply a personal award and a CBI away game. Stay tuned...

Resounding "Boo" to the Clevelander being our team bar in Cleveland. Expensive and packed. Will Zip81 be able to get us hooked up at the bar next door again? -- Liked Reggie's 13 minutes tonight. Hope to see him for 20 minutes on Friday -- This team seems hell-bent on beating K.e.n.t. I think the swagger is back. I look for a 20-point Zips win on Friday Night -- I am the "Carmelo Betancourt" of Chuck-a-Duck. Frenchie should wear a helmet when I throw. BAC the Zips! Note - Issues with the new board caused me to separate everything into multiple, successive posts. Not what I wanted, We'll need to figure it out.

I really thought he substituted well tonight -- Hurley is a dickhead. He is so hateable in defies logic -- Diggs plays so much better when he's pissed off. He seemed to have a genuine Tuesday night hatred for Buffalo. His passing blunders drive me nuts, but man was he fun to watch tonight -- Welcome back Nick Harney. Played well at both ends of the floor tonight. -- This ref crew sucked the fun out of the game. I am so tired of every contested shot in the paint being a foul, and every clean steal being a foul -- The Daisy Duke dance team outfits are a keeper -- Seeing Coach Peters on the bench is a gift every game. I hope to see him next to KD in Cleveland

Good things happen if Evans can hit the open three. Tonight was one of those nights when he was "on," and I am grateful -- Ibitayo had some nice blocks. He's not a good shooter when he has a hand in his face -- Buffalo's Oldham IS a great shooter when he has a hand in his face. Drained three 3's in Forsythe, Big Dog and Tree's face. Nothing but net - Javon vs. Tree -- edge went to Tree tonight. He won. Tree is doing it all -- Tree's full court bullet-pass to a streaking Harney was one of my favorite plays of the season -- Credit Dambrot for rallying the troops and putting a Chauncey Gilliam-esque woodshed beating on the Bulls.

How to Improve the Student Section

You're a pretty negative guy. If the Buffalo game was played on the weekend, the crowd would have been 1.5k bigger. The Zips aren't battling for first place, they're battling for 4th place. On a Tuesday night. Against Buffalo. 3k is fine. The crowd was vocal and gave the team a big lift. There's nothing to grouse about. -

As GP1 mentioned - we drew 4,000 fans to a game against sub .500 Bowling Green, with the Zips coming off a 3-game losing streak and missing two of their top five players. And another player coming off a slightly embarassing 2-week disiplinary suspension. We are 1,500 fans short of a sellout, with a team that starts Carmelo Betancourt and Nyles Evans. With Deji Ibitayo as the 6th man. The JAR should have been barren! Who in their right mind would brave single-digit temperatures to watch that? Someone should be praising UA marketing for filling those seats instead of grousing about the minority of the empty ones. But to the point of a "winning program" - We have a winning program at the MAC level. Students today have been bombarded their entire lives with BCS hype. Back in the Huggins era, the OVC was still a pretty big deal. The Beacon gave the Zips a ton of coverage, and ESPN was lucky to get college hockey reruns to fill it's programming time. The Zips brand was locally stronger in that era, with much less competition for attention. Now, fans of that era are dying off. And there is a TON of competition for the Zips fans attention. Until the Zips really become The Gonzaga of the East, we should be estatic that there are only 1,500 empty seats for a highly unattractive mid-major match up. 4,000 "hard cores" beats 5,500 w/1,500 "halftime-leaving t-shirt mongers" every time. -

Is this basketball Chauncey Gilliam?
Captain Kangaroo replied to Big Zip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You're right. It's probably the Chauncey Gilliam from Stow. Totally different. -
Chauncey may indeed be up sh!t creek. But at least he has a paddle.

Big Dog bringing it tonight. Good to see.

I wanted a pic of him next to this guy at the Michigan game, but it never worked out...

Tonight is the night the Zips 6th Man is sorely needed. Please get liquored-up heavily prior to tonight's game, ZipsNation. From what I hear, BAC levels below 0.10 will be turned away at the gate. BAC the Zips!
