1. What a great win, 102-101. That has to be some kind of combined points record. http://www.gozips.com/sports/wbkb/2014-15/releases/20150114gq32qd
2. I don't know him from Adam but would probably be my first call: http://www.gobison.com/coaches.aspx?rc=771&path=football
3. Would you care to share what was in the response?
4. In watching the game, I've noticed we throw up a lot of 3-pointers.
5. I also agree with the move to transparency...it's the right thing to do and the other state U.'s in Ohio will have to follow suit. But since the general fees make up our sports budget deficit, are you saying the budget should be slashed? Where would you recommend doing the slashing?
6. U of Akron poised to "lead the way" in athletics funding transparencyhttp://college.usatoday.com/2015/01/13/u-of-akron-poised-to-lead-the-way-in-athletics-funding-transparency/
7. Sounds like he's confirming he will go to the NFL, just not right at the moment.
8. I would just rather not see him win 3 more there and would like to see them have to find a replacement. Just wondering if he's feeling the challenge of taking on Belichick and the masterminds at the highest level. If we're wanting to attract more Joe Akron's to the Zips then it's highly relevant to this board whether they go on a 10-year dynasty run or fall back out of the playoff picture.
9. I just can't see Braxton Miller returning to Tosu and having Barrett and Jones riding the pine behind him. Or Miller taking the chance of losing PT to either of them when he could transfer and start for most other schools without having to sit out a year. Quite a few other QB transfers also looking likely...
10. 3 college Natties with a couple of undefeated seasons, not much left to prove...does he have NFL aspirations?
11. Well, I guess Akronite LeBron is happy. And I'm sure GT and the Akron Beacon Journal staff are thrilled. But most of all, I'm sure the Zips Athletic Dept. staff are ecstatic! GO #TeamOhio !!
12. Perfectly stated, IMO. And then we should actively try to schedule a couple big opponents at the Q; it could only help our visibility in NE Ohio and with Cleveland potential recruits. I'm sure quite a few local Clevelanders attend the MACC there and would also come out to see Akron vs. B1G/ACC/A10, etc.
13. Agree. Dude just keeps getting better.
14. Here's one: http://www.sundomearena.com/arena-info Built in the late 70's for < $10M, renovated 30+ years later for $35M. Today it seems like new and state of the art...of course that was made possible by building a large arena to begin with. Unfortunately for them, the beautiful arena is accompanied by a glaring lack of an on-campus football stadium.
15. Yay for Hannah Plybon, 6 treys and a career high 25 points vs. EMU
16. Not according to that link.
17. http://www.phillymag.com/news/2015/01/05/temple-university-stadium-100-million-dollar-bad-idea/ • The era of high-quality mid-tier college football is coming to a close: Income inequality is a growing problem in America — society is increasingly segmented into haves and have-nots, and giant chunks of the middle class are finding themselves in the second group. A similar phenomenon is happening in college football. Basically, the new college football playoff has helped align the sport so that power schools from power conferences are best able to compete, both financially and on the field. The four teams in this year’s playoff? Traditional powers like Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State. Oregon is a relative newcomer, but it’s backed by Nike’s deep pockets. And the big, rich schools are going to see the tide turn ever more in their favor. They’re already getting the TV money. Now there’s talk that they’ll be able to expand the number of scholarships they’re allowed to offer, meaning their bench players will increasingly be would-have-been-starters-at-Temple-quality athletes. They may also be allowed to offer increased subsidies to athletes like stipends and upgraded health insurance. All of which means it might not be long before college football has two versions: The semi-pro league built among the Power Five conferences, and glorified club teams like you find at tiny NAIA universities. It’s hard to see Temple making the leap to the first group: The top dozen universities have athletic budgets of $100 million or more already; Temple’s is closer to $44 million. The university can’t afford to keep up. Read more at http://www.phillymag.com/news/2015/01/05/temple-university-stadium-100-million-dollar-bad-idea/#PaRziMIS4WZ6xrfV.99
18. http://www.cleveland.com/akron/index.ssf/2015/01/university_of_akron_hands_over.html By John Harper, Northeast Ohio Media Group Email the author | Follow on Twitter on January 05, 2015 at 11:05 AM, updated January 05, 2015 at 11:06 AM AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron will start telling students exactly how much of their tuition is being spent on athletics. Can't State reported that the university, working with the student leaders, agreed to provide a breakdown of the athletic-related fees online or on students tuition statements. University President Scott Scarborough told the station that Akron is "will likely be the first university in the state to provide this information." About $400 of a $428 "general fee" is spent in the athletic department, WCan't State reported. Scarborough told WCan't State that "financial times are tough for students and so they're just wanting to make sure they're comfortable with how their tuition dollars and their student fees are being distributed" Last year, in an attempt to balance its budget, the university raised tuition $102.88 while cutting about 20 academic programs.
19. This ABJ article was the first of its sort I remember seeing specifically about Akron, however a little Googling shows that students/parents wanting a fees breakdown is not a new issue as your Can't piece shows. Frankly I'm surprised it hasn't become more of a national story line by now. What would be interesting would be for some universities to come up with an estimated advertising/branding dollar value from having their school playing in nationally and regionally televised sporting events (with spots about the school/academics), mentions during professional sports games with athletes from those schools, and other sporting events using campus facilities (e.g. HS playoffs, pole vault convention, ncaa wrestling tournament, big east track championships, etc.).
20. At $800/year in fees, if a student goes to 20 games it's still $40/game...not exactly cheap. But it's up to them if they want to go to a university, small private college (at 3x tuition), community college, online school, etc. They just need to look at the bottom line amount they're paying for the quality and marketability of education they desire. Itemizing the costs won't change the bottom line. Although some would probably like to make it an issue that state schools should have lower costs as a priority over sponsoring/subsidizing sports.
21. So the percentage of our fees spent on athletics (28%) is half that of Miami (57%)? Who would ever want to send their kid to Miami?!
22. Duke.
23. This is a cool feature. The USF board has a tab for twitter posts related to their teams. Would this be possible on ZN? From Zips Athletic Dept., Wistrcill, Coaches, players, George Thomas, etc. http://thebullspen.com/page/camp_twitter.html
24. Was looking for something else but this brought back a few memories..
25. Good question. I'm guessing volleyball is the least concern; they will just practice & play at some other local gym(s). If they started renovations right after basketball season they would have 7 months from April-October to work before the next season starts. Even if the first phase wasn't totally complete, it could probably be in a usable/safe state to resume playing before continuing/completing renovations. Kind of just depends how much they bite off for the first round of rehab. I wonder who is going to create the actual plan for modifications, and when.
