Yeah, thanks for the nice pics. It still warms my heart that this project can go forward and provide work for some construction folks during this severe recession. Less than 5 months to christening...who's got the champagne?

Dr. Luis Proenza wants your input
ZippyRulz replied to WinZip's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I think we already have a decade's worth of worthy planned/unfinished projects, including the Education building, International Business building, Greek Village, Soccer stadium, outdoor living room plaza, parking decks, dorms, etc.Another thing I would like to see would be an entrepreneurship center open to all Akron residents where anyone with an invention / product / business idea could come to campus and have access to all the resources of the university to help develop it, including graphic design/drafting, engineering/prototype-building, legal/patenting, marketing/sales, etc. In exchange, UA would get royalties from future sales. If/when a new business gets started it could then move to the Akron incubator to continue growing. I think there are a lot of people with good ideas out there but could use some help bringing them to market. A lot of jobs could potentially be created. -

Have I Got a Scarf For You?!
ZippyRulz replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
That San Jose Earthquakes scarf gives me an idea (the We Hate... part). I also like the Deutschland one. -
The new stadium will improve all aspects of the Zips football experience, including the band...you'll soon see.

CUSA would give us exposure to large (southern) markets like Orlando-FL, Birmingham-AL, New Orleans-LA, Houston-TX and Memphis-TN. Baseball/softball, mens and womens soccer and M/W golf would benefit from the milder climates but do the southern schools want to come to northern Ohio regularly? Although, it does seem like a league of (widely-dispersed) misfits...Rice, Marshall, Tulsa, ECU. Unless there's some major conference reorganizations, we probably just fit better in the midwest-based MAC.I think it's pretty obvious the conference-home topic persists because it has a lot to do with the success and direction of a school's athletic program, fan support, finances, etc.

I still would like something like this flying around campus before/during games...I think it would add to the atmosphere and would be appropriate for Akron.http://www.rcblimp.com/helium/aeroblimp_30.htm

I think they would come play in the new stadium in a 3 for 1 but I don't think there's any way in hell *we* would do it now.

Dude, a jury gave the Nemers over $1 million for their run down hell holes. Buying out The Chapel would cost 3 times your estimate at least. Yeah, you're talking about an eminent domain takeover where property values become wildly inflated; I'm not suggesting that...just a friendly offer on the table in case they ever want to find more space somewhere for a megachurch building + ball fields, their own school, etc. Looking at the Google map, their footprint isn't all that big and they have to use campus parking plus they've already had to create a satellite church in Green. Knute Larson is about to retire so who knows what the new leadership might consider. It might be cheaper and easier than buying out a block of 20-30 individual houses or businesses along Exchange St. or dealing with county school board beaurocrats on CHHS.

Elton Alexander on the Zips + Zeke
ZippyRulz replied to Dave in Green's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
We could just put our big team out there (Zeke, Bardo, Swiech, Chris & a PG) and see what happens  -
Just to throw out a couple of ideas...1. Buy The Chapel property for about $1.5M and help them find another location where they could custom build a new state of the art church. Then we could use that site for basketball or other campus expansion (+ tailgating). The problem is they currently have a good central Akron location easily accessible from Rte 8 so it may take more money to get them to move off our campus 2. Re: renovating the JAR...could the roof be raised with new supports at the exterior walls? Then remove the interior corners and add more seating. Remove the track and railing, move upper seating forward and put a walkway w/concessions at the top (and/or loges). Then we would still have our own nice arena on campus but if the city builds an arena downtown we could possibly get some big name opponents to come to Akron and play us at the 'neutral site'.

20 injured players in the spring? That's crazy. What did he mean, 3 former Zips ran in the 3.3's at Pro Day? Did he mean to write 4.3's (in the 40-yard)?

The University of Akron men's basketball program will commemorate its historic 2008-09 season with a celebration on Friday, April 17, at Rhodes Arena.View the full article at www.GoZips.com

I think each season we will/should have: one payday game (no return visit...any school that will show us the money), a 1 for 2 with the Big East to maintain and enhance our ties w/that conference, a 1 for 1 with a 1-A non-BCS conference school, and a 1-AA opponent at our place only. I wouldn't be interested in 1 for 2's with any conferences other than BE or BigTen...not enough local interest.

I like the fact that when we play IU we will have a game under our belt in the new stadium and some of the opening-day drama will be over so we can focus on the Whosiers. The first game in the new environment might be a little distracting, especially with no airplanes taking off and landing nearby Where will the Rowdies be stationed, in the student section or an end zone? The traffic/parking/tailgating scene is going to be utter chaos at first.

Stadium Mock-up from Osborne Design
ZippyRulz replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Those drawings show it at the current site. I don't see how Osborne would get $10,000,000 (8 figures) as shown in the PDF just for the architecture/planning for that facility. I'm disappointed if the U. can't shop around for a better offer than that. -
Wake can't hang with CSU in the first half.

He has a space between his words so we know that one works. The Shift key is another issue though. Just be glad for the periods at the end of the sentences. I think RACER is his own man with his own style, no matter what others say. And maybe he also likes pulling our chain

http://www.print-epro.net/freeport/446/Akr...09/index.php#/0This link is to the current Akron magazine. Page 13 has the ($500M) Capital Campaign report. $200M is the goal for continued "improvements to campus facilities". I heard the KD post-game interview and he did mention the support of Proenza, Directors and AD and putting money into athletic facilities. He must be expecting something to happen.
-
Try convincing KD we don't need a facility upgrade until the JAR is filled consistently. The arena is a recruiting tool, it's where the prospective recruit pictures himself playing before he decides. That's why KD is talking about it. Better facility-->better recruits-->more wins-->more fans in seats. We'll see it happen when Infocision opens.

I agree with HH and DR as the primary guards.HH role: protect the ball, take open shots, drive/score, drive/dishDR role: take open shots, drive & draw foulsSM role: spell HH and/or DR, ball handling, open shotsRS role: same as SM(?)
-
We need more go-to inside game for when the shots aren't falling. Zeke can help us with that next year. Great run to win the MAC and break the NCAA tourney drought.

Holy cow, Bardo draws a foul from Heytvelt and gets a dunk within one minute
