Not exactly correct: On Portland's website: “I am truly excited and honored to be provided this unique opportunity to coach the Portland Timbers, an organization that in a short-time has established itself as a model franchise in Major League Soccer,” said Porter. “I know that Merritt and Gavin are committed to long-term success for the Timbers and come December, I will be completely focused and driven to continue building a professional club in which the Timbers supporters, city and organization will be proud of. In the meantime, out of respect to the Akron program, I will not be commenting further on this matter until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season.” On GoZips: "I always believed that it would take a truly special situation for me to leave Akron, and the Portland Timbers position is that type of opportunity," said Porter. "Given how invested I have been in the Akron program and community for the past seven years, this has been an extremely difficult decision. However, after many conversations with my family and close advisors and, given my long-term aspirations, I feel this is the right time and place for me to take the next step in my coaching career. "In making this announcement, everyone should know that my role with Akron during this college season will not change, nor will my commitment to the players, alumni and supporters. I am extremely proud to continue coaching my team through the fall and the Akron soccer program will have my undivided focus for what I hope will be another championship year. Out of respect to my players and this program, I will not be commenting further about this situation until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season."

Zips in the MLS, NASL, USLPro 2012 Season Thread

Anyone want to watch Darlington Nagbe shave? -
Marla Ridenour @MRidenourABJ Caleb Porter confirms he's staying through end of Zips season. "That's what's fair for the players," he said as he left team meeting. George Thomas @GeorgeThomasABJ No comment from Caleb Porter. He wants to concentrate on the season. #gozips https://twitter.com/#!/search/caleb%20porter

When Lolla left, Akron tried extending his contract and matched Louisville's offer. I can't remember if he took a couple recruits with him as well. Here's the Lolla thread: http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?sh...t=0&start=0

Just a reminder that we've been here before. There are other threads worth digging up if you need some optimism that the next coach can carry the torch.
-
So there he goes, I love the Timbers Army and Have watched almost every Portland home game the past 2 years on TV/MLS Live, but I was holding out hope he'd land in Columbus. Portland is on track to get the third pick in the draft, would any Zips players go that high?
-
The next coach is walking into a very talented young team. My only concern is over whether the MAC will be able to send 2-3 teams to the tournament every year. The addition of West Virginia came at a bad time, especially with NIU's improvements.

We've been here before. I'm still optimistic we'll find a great replacement

We will find out within the next couple of days http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012...coach-hire-week

I believe that if Porter planned on accepting the job, he'd take it after the Zips season ended in 2012 because he's not the type of person to leave a team in the middle of a season. You have to wonder if the offer being leaked by the Portland media hurts Portland's chance to land him, considering Porter has to deal with the players emotions and their worries of losing the coach they came to Akron to play for.
-
the question is, is Portland the best place for Porter? They will have to increase the dimensions of Jeld-Wen field for Porter's style, and the Google Maps image doesn't seem to give them much room. It would be great for soccer in Ohio if he could land in Columbus with the Crew. Regardless, I don't see Akron moving back any after Porter leaves, especially with Embick
-
I've always wondered why we've never lost Jared Embick to another school looking for a head coach. Makes me wonder if he turned down offers to stay at Akron knowing he was next in line here.
-
Bowling Green's first game was in front of a capacity crowd of 2,076
-
Akron could still counter the offer. I was hoping we'd lose him to the Crew when he makes the move to the pros. Michael Beaven from the Akron Beacon Journal was a guest on MLS's extratime radio http://www.mlssoccer.com/extratime

the MLS is now spreading the news Portland Timbers offer, they made a facebook posting and it's on their website. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012...ns-porter-coach http://www.facebook.com/MLS

With Portland's season almost over and no playoff hope, I wouldn't think he'd leave until after the Zips current season if he accepts their offer. Whether it's with Portland or another team, I fear this will probably be our last year with Caleb Porter. Winning a second national title would be a great way to go out.
