  1. Anybody know what happened to BGSU's Turner? Canada is looking relatively pedestrian with 4 losses already to Dartmouth, UConn, Vandy, and Army. O-Who vs. Purdue tonight on ESPN2, 9PM. Boals has the team playing some tough competition OOC - already games against Nova, Baylor, and Utah. Toledo only beat Marshall by 10 the second time around.
  2. This is the perfect pre-MAC tournament for the Zips. I think the bracket was initially poo-pooed by some just due to the lack of name recognition, but these are some competitive mid-majors that will give us a great gauge as @clarkwgriswold mentioned heading into MAC play. I didn't realize Tulane hired Ron Hunter AND nabbed KJ Lawson. Hunter has won just about everywhere he's been. He knows how to get his guys to play. Very intrigued by this match-up. Interesting Ron Hunter story from his Wikipedia... On January 24, 2008, Hunter coached a game against Oakland University while barefoot. He did this to benefit Samaritan's Feet, a foundation that works to provide hope and love to impoverished children around the world by washing their feet and giving them a new pair of shoes. His goal was to collect 40,000 shoes, however, before tip-off, over 110,000 pairs of shoes had been donated. Very cool story. Wishing him and Tulane success (outside of their game against Akron of course ?).
  3. Agreed. Many teams will eek a win out after facing adversity/struggles all day. The Zips won by 15. I think that says a little bit about where this team is at talent wise, focus wise, and potential wise.
  4. Excellent, common sense news. Thanks for sharing!
  5. Probably has more to do with the embarrassment that is the operation of the thing in general. Can never get it right.
  6. CMU played a team with Trolls as their mascot (Trinity). They are automatically barred from any "top of the MAC" discussions until further notice. ? BG's win over Cincy is impressive. Buffalo is up there but thankfully they're not the same Buffalo from year's past. Toledo is gonna be a PITA this year; thankfully we only play them once and it's at the JAR. KSUcks is KSUcks. These MAC schedules are overall pathetic minus a few (Akron's is by far the best thus far).
  7. Excellent, EXCELLENT road win, which isn't something that has been said during Groce's tenure thus far. Definitely a down Marshall squad this year (I, like others, certainly hope this series is renewed moving forward), but we did exactly what I expected us to do - control the game from start to finish and win comfortably. Looking at the box score... - LCJ & X. WOW. - Did Ali really start? That's surprising. Seemed to have a quiet game, too. - Definitely not the greatest games by Cheese & Banks. Cheese with zero FT attempts shows he wasn't himself based on a lack of aggressiveness, and Banks missing 4 FTs is uncharacteristic of him. - Riak seemed to have a decent game, no? - What's up with Reece only getting 14 minutes? Did it have to do with his 6 TOs? - 50% from beyond the arc and 46% from the field as a team. Please tell me we stole the hoops from Marshall and brought them back with us. Definitely some questions (mostly thanks to a LACK OF UPDATES from The Board ?) but overall very impressed from what I'm hearing and seeing regarding the summary of the game. Interesting that Marshall plays Toledo again. No letdowns against Southern, Finals Week, then let's get geared up for this DC tournament that includes a solid Tulane game (Tulane is 7-1 with a win against the PAC 12's Utah). To quote the great @NWAkron, but this time without the sometimes-painful sarcasm, "Excitement is building."
  8. Second-to-last class before my final tonight. Gonna need some top-notch updates from The Board. Please & thank you. Go Zips!
  9. Still makes me sick that we shot something like 60% from the charity stripe that game (correct me if I'm wrong). Should have been a W. Fazekas was on that squad, as it was the return game from the Bracket Buster the year prior.
  10. I applaud Utomi for adapting unselfishly as he did with Groce's system, especially in year 2 of Groce. He was on the low block quite a bit, when he was originally brought in to be a cold-blooded shooter. Unfortunately he was never able to fully adapt to the speed of the uptempo system, and his lack of body control (countless number of offensive fouls/charges) was the #1 indicator. He was also a very streaky shooter, so hopefully he can get on a hot streak for USC's sake.
  11. This is the biggest OOC game (aside from WVU/Louisville) for a number of reasons. - We have a guy on our staff with a STRONG Huntington, WV, connection for recruiting. - A down Marshall squad is who we should be beating in year 3 of Groce. - Road wins have been tough in recent years (as @NWAkron mentioned). - Prove we deserve to be talked about with some of the expected top teams in the MAC (Toledo, Buffalo, etc.).
  12. This could be HUGE news. Fingers crossed it all transpires how we hope it does!
  13. Sounds like it was a rough game with a good close out to win by a solid 17 over a team that has a lot of fight and zero fear with it being their first DI season.
  14. You spelled "pathetic" wrong. Fearless Forecast: This will be the last game of the 2019 season for the football team.
  15. Miss Mary Mack Mack Mack All dressed in black, black, black With silver buttons, buttons, buttons All down her back, back, back. She asked her mother, mother, mother For 50 cents, cents, cents To see the elephants, elephants, elephants Jump over the fence, fence, fence. They jumped so high, high, high They reached the sky, sky, sky And they didn't come back, back, back 'Til the 4th of July, ly, ly!
  16. Should go 12-0 in the OOC, meaning he only has to win a pedestrian 8 conference games to get to the magical 20 number.
  17. This is an incredible effort. Absolutely incredible. Have to applaud the Zips squad.
  18. Vue has the ACC Network as well. Lots of options for coverage on this game.
  19. Our football team is in its 27th year in the MAC, and is currently winless. Why not just join and start building the tradition back up?
  20. Sayles is the last remaining Dambrot recruit, and it shows. That's most certainly not a slam on Sayles. He was recruited for a completely different system - half court offense, half court defense, inside-out gameplan on offense, man-to-man on defense; a system I think he would have truly excelled in. Groce employs an up-and-down attack on offense, and whatever he needs to use on defense to shut down the opponent - full court press, zone, man, etc. I think Sayles is a good player that could have really developed into something had he not dealt with the injury bug. The jump from high school to DI ball is huge to begin with - size, speed, strength, pace, pressure, etc. He lost half a season his freshman year, and basically the previous 2 seasons in their entirety. The obstacles on his uphill battle include conditioning, as well as STILL adjusting to DI size/speed/strength/pace/pressure/etc. In many of those categories, he's still a freshman basically. I have always admired how he stuck around through the coaching change, and how he's always out there with the team. Speaks to the kind of person he is despite the series of unfortunate events that have taken place on the court these last few years. I think you'll see Sayles become more of a factor as the season wears on, especially during the MAC portion. He's an athletic big that I believe will find his place and get somewhat caught up in the categories I mentioned above. Wasn't his hanging-on-the-rim-induced injury a byproduct of a technical called earlier in the game on either him or someone else for hanging on the rim (I think it was him?)? Robotham is a perfect example of how injuries can derail a career. He was getting P5 transfer looks during his freshman year if I remember correctly, and probably would have departed if not for the injury. He eventually ended up going back home to play for UNLV, and had a decent finish to his career there, but nowhere near his ceiling. That kid might have been the best true basketball player this program has had as a freshman. His vision, shot, and ability to slash to the basket were unrivaled in an Akron uniform (at least as a freshman). After that injury, he always seemed timid. Glad to see a solid highlight video from the other night. Love how we're finishing at the rim. Everyone looks so smooth.
  21. I believe he did play PG for most of his basketball career because he was a late bloomer height wise. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Admittedly I haven't been able to watch this team aside from the NCCCCCCCCCCC game, so I've missed them at their better/best. I can't add too much to what has already been said. However, as I've posted before, this team resembles the successful squads Groce had at OU - athletic, deep(er), and versatile. For the first time since Groce has taken over, we have 2 legitimate post players (Riak more-so defensively, Reece all-around), 2 legitimate PGs (LCJ & Tribble), an athletic stretch 4 (X), and multiple interchangeable parts (Cheese, Banks, Ali). This should be a very fun season, and much needed after football and soccer.
  22. Try to be competitive in this one, but more importantly, avoid injuries. Louisville made the perfect hire in Chris Mack, and they're a good, good team. I'm expecting to get beat handily in this one.
  23. Why the delay to join the MAC? Logistics?
  24. Seems like it was a good win. Convincingly rolled over a regional competitor. I'll get to watch this Buffalo/UCONN game as well as the Toledo/Notre Dame game with a smile on my face. Completely forgot that UCONN's coach is Dan(?) Hurley.
  25. In class currently. Can someone give me a synopsis of what was so good about the first half aside from the 18 pt halftime lead? Please and thank you.
