  1. With this logic other teams would want to travel to Akron to play the Zips. They would get more point IF they win at Akron and the Zips are more than just a decent team. Personally I think this is only part of the answer. The University of Akron has problems scheduling home games for both Football and Basketball, but they don't seem to have that problem with Soccer. Does Duke have problems scheduling home games in Basketball? I think not. I am not sure exactly what the problem is, but I personally feel that a better scheduling job could be done.
  2. I thought we had made it into the end zone the play before.
  3. Wow ...... made it back home in time to catch the 4th quarter. I have to admit, with three (yes 3) seconds left I would have "wimped out" and kicked a field goal. Maybe that's why JD is the coach and I am the guy just watching the game. Congrats guys ....................
  4. When I ask Sports Stores like Dick's, Logan's, etc. they tell me that they used to carry University of Akron items but then the University took over the merchandising of their logo items several years ago and want an arm and a leg for the right to sell the stuff. All I know is that the selection is limited (even at the Bookstore) and many of the sizes are suspect. I bought a 2XX sweatshirt and had to give it to my 5'2" (135 lb) wife, as it sure didn't fit me. And this was even before it was washed. I did notice Champs had a fairly large selection of Akron T's and sweatshirts, at least it was comparable to OSU.
  5. From the two matches I saw this is the biggest problem. Hopefully it gets corrected soon as the schedule will get a lot tougher.
  6. Nice job if you can do nothing and get paid for it.
  7. I received a response (such as it was). It seems that everyone at the Beacon just "KNOWS" what the public wants and those of us making suggestions are nit-pickers, nay-sayers, and know-nothings.
  8. You're right it was "Don" .... as the years go by it gets tougher on those of us with "old timers disease".
  9. What is happening in the world? Can this be the third (yes, THIRD) sports prognosticator that has Can't winning the MAC East. This is football guys, not basketball. Put out those funny cigarettes, sober up, and get serious. Wait now I get it ....... it's a joke right!
  10. I like this idea and don't forget about the "older" Zips. Bill Turner was the Center for the Zips NCAA Runner-Up team in 1963, he also played in '64 and '65. He was drafted by the old San Francisco Warriors (later Golden State) and played for four or five years in the NBA. The Alumni Office should have an address for him. A note on that same team Gus Williams, a forward, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns even though he never played football. He didn't make the team.
  11. This weekend I have to drive my wife to Rochester Hills, Michigan so she can help plan my daughter's wedding. Mu future Son-In-Law is an Ohio State Graduate and a huge fan. Since they only have one TV, and both games are on at the same time, I will either have to kill this guy and look for a new Son-In-Law or find my way to Fenton, Michigan. Where's BW3 in Fenton?
  12. I strongly agree .... I don't know what happened, but obviousily this team has a good deal of work to do in order to finish as strong as they did last year. But don't give up the ship yet ...............
  13. Excellent ideas ...........
  14. I have always thought that Bill Curry was a lousy coach, is a really lousy announcer, and now I know that he is a real idiot when it comes to prognostications. And so does Bill Curry .....................
  15. Everyone should remember that this is the preseason and the matches don't count. Also the four teams in the Westfield Cup will probably go deep in the NCAA Tournament. The Zips have work to do like I said in my original post, but I don't see any reason to panic. My biggest problem is that they had numerous chances to score both Friday and Sunday and only managed one goal.
  16. Ryno I agree with you, however it is the other 20% that gets you butt beat. NC State and Penn State have greater depth that Akron and probably a few more skilled position players. While I agree that Akron just might get a win or two here, these games are NOT going to be cakewalks.
  17. The four teams are playing for the Westfield Cup are all in the presean Top Ten of soccer. Unfortunately the Zips (ranked 7th) lost their first match to Creighton (ranked 10th) by the score of 1-0. Both teams semed evenly matched, the Zips just couldn't score after several chances. The Zips showed good teamwork and were quick to the ball, however they just couldn't seem to put the ball in net. They will play at noon on Sunday against St. Johns (ranked 17th) while Creighton will meet Clemson (ranked 15th) for the title. This first match pointed out that we can't take anything for granted this year and we will have to work hard to keep our ranking. There are a lot of good teams out there and four of them are in Akron this weekend.
  18. Ohio State doesn't belong on the same field with the Zips in soccer .And then Zip Watcher said: "Quite simply, the Suckeye futbol team isn't of the caliber required for the Westfield Cup. IU might be the only big 11 team worthy."Great minds think alike ... or in my case sometime even not so great minds.
  19. Who sets up these events? Why is there a scheduling conflict with the Zips football opener? Doesn't the Athletic Department oversee these things? So far I am not impressed with the new AD and the directions (plural as in more than one) the department are going.
  20. Hey ... Hey ... Hey, let's not have any sarcastic comment about age on this site. Not only do I probably have underwear older and with more experience than you, but when I first started at THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON it was a city college and was called Akron University. Remember the older you get your short term memory gets a little shaky so if I sometimes slip and Akron U. comes out, please forgive. Even in my day some things were the same

  23. GP1 said:"Fan support did not die with Dennison beiing let go, it died when free tickets were no longer given away at games to the bitter, chaep bastards who live in NE Ohio."I beg to differ, and I was there. Fan support died with the attitude brought on by Faust and his "we're in the big time now" attitude. Faust walked into Buchtel Field, saw over 150 brand new football cleats and said, " Get rid of them and get NIKE." Gerry had a contract with NIKE so the University bought new shoes, upped the price and procedure for buying ALL sports tickets, shit on ACME (no more Acme-Zips game), and let a pretty good basketball coach go to Cincinnati because there was no longer a basketball conference in Akron. The attitude of the Athletic Dept. and the University left a sour taste in many alumni's mouth for quite a few years. Oh yeh, and Faust sucked as a coach, couldn't carry Dennison's jock.
  24. iheartkarriker said ..........Folks this is the cost of building a successful promotion. I do agree that $525 is high, however, money is needed to be raised. I'd be in favor of a lower price. ....... It is Pat's job to make money, if he doesn't make money the athletics department can not and will not grow.and bobbyake said ..........what wont happen is making money by raising prices, it's economics. The demand is simply not strong enough. You have to be kidding me if you think the people around here are going to pay over $500 to park for a ZIPS game. Your denfending a bad idea.I have to agree with bobbyake, this is a tremendous increase in price and very few fans will accept it. I used to have six season ticket for football and basketball every year for years until "The Great Faust" graced our campus and football program. Prices went up dramatically, donations were then required, and membership to the Zips Athletic Dept was required. Now I donated to the University, and the price increase wouldn't have bankrupted me, but I dropped all my season tickets and donations and the only thing I've bought since are single game tickets. Call me stupid ... I don't mind sex, but I'm really not found of rape.
  25. The investigative panel that Dr. Proenza requested has delivered it's preliminary report into the Plimpton affair and the Beacon Journal has two articles in today's paper concerning the results. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/15187011.htm http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/15187096.htmThe comments from the public regarding the panel's suggestions are especially enlightening. Obviously none of the readers were University of Akron graduates, or maybe even Central-Hower graduates, or maybe even Perkins Jr. High graduates.
