  1. I know we have a new A.D. and there are several new faces in the Athletic Dept, and I hate to sound like a whiner, but ..............The football schedule this year sucked. I know that this is the fault of the "old" Athletic Dept. but the first three games are away and six of our first eight are away. The basketball schedule doesn't seem to be much better in my opinion. The new web site design (GoZips.com) in my opinion is not nearly as good as the old one. Too many ads, the page is awful "busy", hard to read, and it loads a lot slower than the old one. And the information is lacking timeliness. Articles, quotes, and box scores on the games and matches usually come the next day or not at all. The rosters for the teams (usually girls) have no photos, is there a reason for that in today's society? The page lacks consistancy across the various team pages. I purchased a Family Pac for the football season, and after talking to many friends had to get more tickets for friends and relatives that wanted to go the games. The week before the Can't State game I went to purchase tickets for Miami, Bowling Green, and Western Michigan only to be told that they "weren't in yet". This was already after four games into the season. I won't even mention the $500 "donation" fiasco for parking in Lot #1. But why is it a parking pass cost $25 ($5 per game), when you can drive up the day of the game and park for $3.00?This season started off with such high hopes for our athletic teams and right now everbody seems to be foundering. The Men's Soccer Team can not score, and most of the starters are back. The Football Team seems to be going nowhere fast. And the Women's Volleyball and Soccer Teams seem no better than last year after such a promising start.Like I said, I normally don't like to complain but I really think some things could be a little better. I remember (in my undergraduate days when the university was smaller) when myself and some of my friends complained about Memorial Hall being closed on the weekend. Later that day Red Cochran stopped by my dorm room and told me that from now on it would be open at certain times on the weekend. That's the Athletic Department I was used to, and maybe today it is not possible, but it could be a little better.
  2. Eric McLaughin was smooth ...... and I may be old, but I ain't dead (yet).
  3. I would also like to hear a little less about how Brookhart is going to end up at some BCS school next year; how Getsy is going in the 1st round of the NFL draft; and how we are going to do the number on Ohio State next year. I am a fan (I sat through the Army game last year) but let's stifle the hyperbole and get realistic. I would like to see a consistent offense, less penalties, a defense that can tackle, and coaches that can change a game plan when it doesn't work.
  4. To clarify, even though I noted you said you understand. I was making a statement about the players who lost their job to Sutton when they make those kind of decisions. It was late when I typed the inital post. If I don't make sense now I guess I don't have another excuse. ....... I thought people play for the love of the game not to sit on the bench on gameday or get beat up in practice. Take it from someone who "sat on the bench" for 3-4 years, you do play for the love of the game. And the chance (note I said chance) to date a cheerleader ain't bad either.
  5. Nor the perimeter shooting of "Sumthin'" Smith or Ken Mackovic or the dunks of Don Williams! I never thought "Sumthin" was anything, but the Turners, "Big Don", Mackovic, Sloan and the boys will always be my heroes ... even Terry O'Hare rates a mention, if just for old times sake.
  6. Why are you jumping to conclusions? ..... Let me put it to you in terms you can probably relate: Toledo Rockets couldn't have less sex. This means that you don't have any sex and therefore can not have less sex than not having sex at all. If Toledo Rocket fans don't have sex ... where do all these dummies come from?
  7. Since this is about ' ... the Mac baby" you might be interested in what the Canton Repository reported about a couple of Ohio University football players. http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Categor...&ID=311158&r=10Please ignore the part about the MAC "Player of the Week"
  8. Today was a wake up call .... not only for the coaches and the team, but also all the Zips fans. We were never as good as we thought we were on Friday, just like we aren't as bad as we looked on Saturday. This team needs to come together and play four quarters like winners, and not depend on those 4th quarter drives to win a game. I like the "never say quit" attitude that this team has. I really hate the "don't worry, we don't have to play hard to win" attitude that they seem to exhibit at least a quarter or two during the game. Hopefully we learned something today and will turn it around for the Cincinnati game. If not it will be a very long season. And speaking of long seasons, what up with the men's Soccer team, other than they can't put the ball in the net?
  9. I've seen every game this year and I have yet to see the Zips put together 4 quarters of "I want to win". My hat is off to Can't, they wanted this game more, their quarterback was on top of his game, their receivers ran excellent routes, and Akron got its butt kicked. It seems to me (and I hope that I am wrong) that the offense feels that they just have to show up and other teams are going lay down and let them score. Nine penalties for ninety yards didn't help either as a couple of them came at critical times.
  10. That would solve not only the problem with the kicking game, but also the attendance problem. I know so many horny old men that we could even raise the ticket prices for senior citizens.
  11. Wrong .... wrong .... wrong !!!Tom "Jamal" Svetlik, without the "college experience" will never find a woman to marry him. He will never find a job to earn enough money to buy a "Vette". And when it comes to a sex life, well maybe he'll never know what he is missing!
  12. If that's your secretary, where do I apply for a job at your place??
  13. I don't know what others in the community think, but it is obvious to me that the University of Akron has come a long way since my undergraduate days, or even my daughter's undergraduate days. The blocking off of the streets throughout the campus was a great idea long overdue. The new buildings and landscaping make the campus seem like a campus. This has to be a combination of efforts by many people over many years, it's not something that just happened yesterday.
  14. Sorry but I must respectfully disagree .... We will never know what Dennison could have done in moving us to Division 1-A, as he was never given the chance. We do know that bringing Faust in and meeting his demands cost us a coach the caliber of Huggins (although I do dislike his reliance on JV players). Both the football and basketball programs went into the dumper until just recently. But hey, everything is now great because we are and
  15. Personally I think that the "new & improved" GoZips.com is really bad. Not only does it load really slow, but I hate all those commercials. The pages are too busy, they need to eliminate half the crap they try to cram onto a page. I like the old format much better. And oh, by the way, in case I forget this week And we are
  16. Gerry was a terrific recruiter, an outstanding motivator, an all around nice guy, but probably the world's worst coach.
  17. I like the idea, I think its great ................
  18. Sometimes I feel I've been around since they built the Rubber Bowl. However it's time has come and I fully agree that there should be a stadium on campus ... Hell there should have been a stadium on campus thirty some years ago when the city sold the Rubber Bowl to the University for $1.00.However I don't really see that being a permanent solution for the attendance problems. The newness of a stadium on campus may draw 20,000+ crowds for a while, but my guess is that the newness will soon wear off. Attendance has ALWAYS been a problem. During my undergraduate days the complaint was that Akron was "a high school town" and people would rather go to a high school game on Friday night rather than Saturday afternoon. Even in the Dennison era when the Zips were competing for the Division II-A championship I don't remember the attendance being better than 10,000-12,000 except for the playoff games. A stadium on campus should be a priority, but I don't see it bringing out all that many more students. Like it or not Akron is still a commuter campus. I'll bet most (most not all) of the students at the game Saturday were residence hall and off campus housing students, that's the way it was in my day. An on campus stadium will draw more of the same type students, but not 10-15 thousand of them, the numbers just aren't there. Getting alumni out to the games is a big problem also, an it shouldn't be a problem. Check the Alumni website to see how many signed up to spend a couple bucks to eat an socialize before Saturday's game. LIke it or not the "cheap tickets" that the Acme-Zip game sold was the only thing that put 35,000-40,000 butts in those seats,What's the solution ... wish I knew ... then I'd offer my expertise to the Athletic Dept. for free.
  19. When was the last time that Can't State beat both Miami and Bowling Green in football in the same year? When was the last time that Can't State opened up the season 2-2 and 2-0 in the MAC? This has to be a media conspiracy fomented by those three "experts" that picked Can't State to win the MAC East. I don't know how they did it but Can't is now a team to be reckoned with? Please tell me I'm dreaming.
  20. At the risk of getting kicked out of this forum ... I happen to agree with you. When I was an undergraduate I spent many weekends partying at Can't. One of my daughters graduated from Akron and the other graduated from Can't. The University of Akron is my first loyality, but Can't and even Ohio State get my support on occasion. However I must say that when Akron plays Can't
  21. I still have to laugh about our old high schoool basketball coach. He had a cake put in the locker room at half time with the intention of telling us that the other team sent it and that they thought we were a bunch of "cake eaters". When he came into the locker room almost half the cake was already eaten ... you should have heard the language, seen the clipboards fly, I think one of our basketballs is still in orbit. At practice the next day the windsprints weren't as funny.
  22. Akron U????? lol Just how long does he want to "retain" these freshmen and sophmores? Until they are 7th, 8th, and 9th year seniors?
  23. Bob Huggins. Bob Hugggins maybe was not fired, but believe me he was "forced out" when the hired Gerry "The Notre Dame Wonder". In order to meet one of Gerry's many demands (after firing Dennison) they went to a "big time" conference in football, but left basketball out in the cold. Basketball did NOT have a conference and had no chance of making post season play. Without a conference Huggins could have won every game, and still not made it to the NCAA. Everyhing but "Gerry's team" was second class, and Huggins was not a 2nd class coach.
  24. Pal, if you think 4-6 is a "great start" for the volleyball team , you woulda loved Lee Owens. I think its time to stop not caring about the UA volleyball squad, and time to make a change if they don't dramatically turn things around (ala wahine soccer). I think they've only been competitive for a MAC East title once in this guy's forever tenure. We can do better! Are you listening Mack?Maybe you should take a deep breath and read my signature statement again ...........
  25. Tip of the hat to the Women's Soccer team and the Women's Volleyball team. Soccer is undefeated and Volleyball is off to a great start. Not to be sacreligious, but there is more to our Athletic Department than Men's Football, Soccer and Basketball. Go Zips And even in the womens sports ...........
