  1. Just so you know the game has been changed to 3:30 PM to accomodate ESPN U.
  2. How about the giving the "Pie in the Sky Mathematician" Award to the guy in the Athletic Department that counts the attendance at the home games.
  3. Despite attendance figures there is no way that 15,000 actually walked through the gates at any game this year. Now it's the day after Thanksgiving (big shopping day); the Zips are staring a losing season in the face; and the game is on ESPN U for those that don't want to put up with the Rubber Bowl hassles. They may announce an attendance figure of 15,000, but I'll bet a day old drumstick that 10,000 or less will actually be in the seats.
  4. To the University of Akron's Rifle Team:
  5. I just have to disagree with your assessment of the coach's abilities and the adminsitration's action during the period that the University of Akron went to D-1A. First Muse was going to make a name for himself and drag Akron into the "Big Time" no matter who he ran over. The AD was nothing more than Muse's gopher. Look at the conference they put us in to get to D-1A status. No basketball, so Huggins left, it wasn't about money. Dennison was never given a chance try to bring the team into D-1A, Muse saw a chance to get a "BIG NAME" coach so he did. And speaking of the abilities of Gerry Faust, I grant you he could recruit, when did he ever win at the college level. He lost at Notre Dame (which is pretty hard to do) and he came to Akron and lost even with the gravy schedules and the cake teams they gave him to play against. I was there in the 60's with Gordon Larson, in the 70's with Dennison, and I was there when they hired Faust. Don't get me started :mad_flame: :mad_flame: I do agree that it was almost thirty years ago, and it is time to go on ...........
  6. I don't think we should get out of the MAC, at least until we are able to win consistantly in most sports, then go to the next level. And I don't understand why everyone thinks that the MAC hates us. What does the MAC have to do with scheduling our games, I thought that was the responsibility of our Athletic Dept. Do we get bad calls from the officials and sometimes the short end of the stick. Yes we do but my observations is that every team in the MAC does because overall we have some of the worst officials I have ever seen in any conference, both in basketball and football. As for other teams hating us, well that I put down to team spirit and rivalry. Last year FOX Sports and this year ESPN certainy have shown the MAC (and especially the ZIPS with their record) some love with their TV schedules.
  7. I originally thought Loyola Marymount would be a big problems, especially after I saw they beat Oral Roberts. However I watched them agains New Mexico State last night (hard to believe they won 71-69) and I feel that the Zips should be able to play with them, especially since we will be at home. The Lions have four big men that they play (Grubb 6'9"; Craig 7'0"; Deric 6'9"; and Knight 6'8") but they don't seem to play big, so we should have the same problem we had last year with Nevada. The guards are probably five deep (Knight 6'2"; Martin 6'2"; Miller 6'5"; Ziri 6'2"; and Montgomery 6'1") but are not that fast, too often play out of control, and with the exception of Knight don't seem to be shooters. The game last night was terrible. The officiating left an awful lot to be desired as a lot of ticky-tacky fouls were called (55 overall) that killed the flow of the game. Loyola came back late as they trailed as much as 21 points in the second half. If the Zips play the way they are capable of we should be OK.
  8. DESIRE ... I did not see that in the offense last night. DESIRE ... I saw it in the defense, but the 3-3-5 configuration put McRae into the our backfield once he got past the line of scrimmage. The 3-3-5 is supposed to handle the passing game that the MAC quarterbacks were going to throw at the Zips this year. Guess what, most of our losses came because teams ran on us, especially their QB's.DESIRE ... I don't mind Jabari Arthur dropping a pass now and then. What I do mind is that all too often he makes very little effort to catch a pass. And last night when that snap went past Stec he made as much effort to get to it as George Bush does raising the minimun wage.DESIRE ... I also didn't see to much of it on the sidelines during the game. The players and the coaches all looked like they would rather e someplace else.
  9. I agree all season long they have been taking a day and a night to review a call. There were a couple of bad calls tonight, but that wasn't what made the difference in this game. When it comes to MAC officials I am worried about basketball. I thought the officials were really bad in basketball last year, hopefully they will improve this year.
  10. I am glad to see Crouch has kept his record intact with a holding penalty. Finally a TD on a pass to Arthur. Now it's 17-7.
  11. The bobcats had six shots from approximately the five yard line and couldn't put it across. Way to go Defense The Defense seems to be the only ones hta want to win. God damn Arthur just dropped a great pass. I'm beginning to think the players on the Defense are great but that 3-3-5 sucks.
  12. I don't think J.D. can get this team motivated no matter what he says, and maybe the problem is he doesn't say anything. Too many players seem to be too lackadaisical. Stec looked like he was stolling in the park going back after that fumbled snap, for my money he gave up on that play and it cost us a TD. Getsy gets sacked on the last play before the half. If the offense can't score maybe we should give our piss poor special teams a chance to kick a field goal? Too many Akron players don't want to win this game, and that has been the problem with most of the team members all year.
  13. Last year it was Plinton and a police informant. Now it's Harry Collier (a convicted felon) and purse snatching. I am not sure what the answer is, or if there is really a problem with the dorms, but the University is starting to get a bad reputation concerning on campus crime and on campus housing. Today's Beacon Journal has this: http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/16025518.htmHopefully most of the people that commented on this online article were not University of Akron graduates because frankly most of their comments were just plain stupid. I spent three years in the dorms and I can see several sides of this issue. People that have served their time in prison shouldn't be discriminated against, however I think the University has an obligation to the students to make sure that the dorms are safe and that the students living in them are law abiding. The University can and should do a better job in this area.
  14. Oral Roberts has always been a good basketball school, I just didn't know that this year they were good enough to beat Kansas. Also look at Dec. 29th with Loyola Marymount ... this is another basketball team that is tough year after year, and they have already beaten Oral Roberts this year. This basketball schedule is no piece of cake.
  15. I couldn't agree more. I know I used to have season tickets for football, and went to most of the basketball games. After they replaced Dennison with Faust I stopped donating to the University and quit going to games for several years. It was only the last couple of years that I started attending basketball games and this year bought season tickets for football. Even today I still hope that Dr. Muse rots in hell.
  16. Pardon me if I smirk a little. I have DISH Network so last year for the Nevada Basketball game I shelled out an extra $8 or so a month to get a package upgrade and ESPN U. I kept it, and now I get to sit home and watch all the Zip games everyone complains that they can't get. I'd invite everyone over to watch with me but you would probalbly drink all my beer and my wife had a "serious talk" with me some years ago about inviting my rowdy friends over to watch football and basketball. I do wear the pants in the family, but if she divorced me I guarntee you she would own those pants and naked I'm not a very pretty sight.
  17. While everyone is predicting and complaining about how "easy" Akron's schedule is and that ther are only 3-4 teams to worry about look at what Oral Roberts did tonight against Kansas (the #3 team in the nation). They beat Kansas 78-71, and most impressively they made 11 of 19 threes. This will not be an easy season but it should be interesting and the JAR should be rockin' all fall and winter.GO ZIPS
  18. The Beacon Journal now and then comes up with a pretty good article. Terry Pluto wrote this today about Dennsion and Tressel. I remember Jim Dennison, he was a good coach, but even more important, he was a CLASS ACT. I'm sorry Akron lost you, but you're doing great at Walsh. Oh, here is the link: http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/16016207.htm
  19. I have to agree that rebounding (or lack of) was probably the main reason. And yes,the loss was a team loss just like tonight's win against Gardner-Webb was a team victory. The entire team played much better tonight or was it that Gardner-Webb is a much weaker team the Arkansas-Little Rock. It is almost imposible to tell by just listening to the radio.
  20. The regular season is important .... if it wasn't why play it, just go straight to the MAC tournament? I'm not going to panic after just one game, but I am also not going to get caught up in predicting 24 or 28 wins this year. I may sound like a broken record but we need to become a better rebounding team or we will be limited to one shot everytime down the court.
  21. Zips lose 81-79. The same problem we had last year with rebounding is still with us, and Woods didi't seem to make that much of a difference. UALR killed us with 3 point shooting and they were extrememly efficient at the free throw line. Joyce and Dials did not have a very good game. But the main thing that concerns me is the rebounding, that is the one thing that will continue to kill us all year. This is one that we hate to lose, but give UALR credit, despite their turnovers they found a way to win.
  22. If in doubt (and from what I've read we should be in doubt) GET YOUR PASSPORT. I've got mine, but if I remember correctly it took six weeks, including several appointments with the Immigration/Passport Office. There should be one in the Akron Post Office or the Federal Building, I got mine in the Main Canton Post Office. I think the new fee is somewhere betwwen $75-80. It's a pain, but I think it will be invaluable down the road.
  23. Sorry about the "stupid" comment Rowdy Zip but I'm sure you know what I mean ........
  24. I know Butler was an Acme-Zip game and I think Tampa was also. The Acme-Zip game tickets were not BOGO's. Acme originally sold the game tickets at the store for fifity cents each, then a little later (in the 70's) the game tickets were sold for $1. The price was deeply discounted and the attendance after the Acme-Zip game dropped off very dramatically, but that game did put 30-40 thousand butts in the seats. You could take a family of five to see a footaball game, park, and feed them for less than $15.00, and the shows were great. It wasn't all fun though, the "fans" never seemed to be interested in the game and you were always dodging soft drinks thrown by some kid whose parent was elsewhere. I remember an awful lot of cops for crowd control but they never seemed to be interested in controlling the crowd.
  25. Crouch with another penalty ... that's not a prediction ... that a given.
