Zips ranked 7th in nation for '06
ZipAlumn replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
You are being unkind to the Beacon Journal. They posted a HUGE article on the 25th. http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/sports/colleg...on/15115999.htmLets see that was three paragraphs and four sentences, but at least it was at the top. :wall: But so does the Beacon -
Frye is the Man in Cleveland now!!!
ZipAlumn replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
The Canton Repository has a historical breakdown on their quarterbacks over the years and a nice little commentary on Charlie Frye. http://cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=17&ID=297752&r=7 -
Despite the BIG RAISE for Proenza, money is an issue at the University of Akron, as it is with any public university in Ohio. Earlier this year an e-mail was sent to all employees "suggesting" the low single digit increases in wages for the next year. Remember tuition increases have been astronomical for the past umpteen years and the Trustees are still screaming about lack of funds.

The Freekin' Ur'nal's New Ownership
ZipAlumn replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Better sit down for this one ....... in Thursday's Beacon Journal I counted three - YES THREE - articles concerning the University of Akron. That must set some kind of record.    -
Any new news about the football stadium?

Allyn Street alum wrote: I checked at Ticketmaster and couldn't find this event listed. Can you buy tickets the day of the match - game - meet - whatever? I'm old enough that my playing days are over, but I could definately be a spectator. Does Can't State have a squad, if so I'll bet (ready for this)

The Freekin' Ur'nal's New Ownership
ZipAlumn replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Hopefully the local coverage, ESPECIALLY THE LOCAL COLLEGE SPORTS COVERAGE, improves with the new ownership. I don't plan on holding my breath, but hope does spring eternal. -
Major congrats has to go to those members of the University track team that went to the NCAA Championships in California.John Russell finished 6th in the Men's Pole VaultAshley Kaufman finished 8th in the Women's JavelinTomaz Smialek finished 8th in the Men's High JumpNatalie Sako finished 12 in the Women's High JumpAlthough Randall Hafner and Auston Papay did not make it into the finals they also should have our congratulations. These were the NCAAl Championships -- not the MAC Championships -- and definately not the Akron City Championships. So why wasn't this covered better by the Beacon ... the Canton Repository had better (and more accurate) coverage.

Congratulations to Tomasz Smialek, John Russell, Natalie Sako, Ashley Kaufman, Randall Hafner, and Auston Papay for advancing to the NCAA Championships. Well Done !!!

A litle historical perspective might be in order here ...My first day at the University of Akron I was sitting outside my dorm when Paul Winters (then Band Director) came up to me and asked me to join the Band. I never played and instrument and told him so, but he didn't seem concerned. I declined and later saw the Band at the Rubber Bowl during half time of the football games. This is the truth, they turned off the stadiium lights, and about thirty memebers of the Band walked on the field and played the Alma Mater, they turned off the lights again and the Band walked off. Talk about an embarrassment. The current Band could be improved (what organization can't be improved) but it has come a long way, and from my point of view is pretty damn good.

I am not sure of the depth chart, but I agree with you on the number of guards versus forwards and centers skhorbotly. I think that the lack of height and maybe athletic ability is the only thing keeping this Zip team from taking the next step and not only making the big dance, but going several games into the tournament. But good big men are harder to find than guards, especially when you see 6'6" guards all over the place.

I am not entirely sure that any university is doing a "real good job keeping costs in check". I don't know for sure as I don't have access to any operating budgets over the years. All I know is that sevral years I had a multi million dollar operating budget reduced by a couple percent and was still expected to "grow the business" by five or more percent.Of the two daughters I put through college, one went to Akron and the other went to Can't and she cost me more. I know, I know, my "Can't Girl" broke my heart but the education both of them received was comparable. In some areas of study Can't is preferable to Akron. It is just in the area of athletics that there is no comparison. And finally .... Zipmeister this was posted in the General Discussion area not in any of the Sports Forums.

University of Akron Trustees agreed to a 5.7% increase in tuition Beacon Journal and I was wondering if it was just me or was anyone else concerned about the continual spiriling costs of education. It isn't just the University of Akron, but every institute of higher learning seems to increase tuition and room & board costs two - three - or even four times inflation every year. College education costs have definately outpaced the average cost of doing busines within corporations over the past ten to twenty years, and no end seems to be in sight. Tuition alone at the University of Akron will be over $8,000 next year and that is not even including room & board. The cost of a four year college eduction can range from $60,000 to $160,000 (at many private colleges) and who graduates in just four years anymore. I realize that the future earning power of college graduates will more that offset this over their lifetime, however the cash flow needed to immediately pay for this education is often daunting. In the business world there is a contant pressure to reduce costs as seen by the continual "downsizing" of many large corporations. It just seems to me that the academic community shows no concern for holding expenditures in line, let alone reducing them, thus the continual increases. I struggled to put two daughters through college about ten years ago and I made a very good salary. I don't know if I could do the same thing today.

Mine goes back to my student days in 1968 when the Zips played in the Grantland Rice Bowl (the Division II Championship). A group of us drove to Murfreesboro, Tennessee for the weekend and the game. The party was great the game left an awful lot to be desired. The Zips lost 33-13 and were never really in the game. Terry Bradsahw was Louisana Tech's quarterback, and he was literally a man among boys that day. The play that sticks in my mind is when two Zips hit Bradshaw in the backfield and he was going down ... he threw a sidearm pass ... forty yards downfield to a streaking receiver ... for yet another touchdown. Many years later (after his Super Bowl years) I met Terry Bradsaw when he was the speaker at our company's awards banquet. I thought about that play and wondered if I could have tackled him, but instead settled for "catching" my award.

This is a serious question......Did he whistle and dance? You couldn't have been in the locker room too often after a win when Gerry Faust was the coach. Great speaker, great recruiter, excellent singer and tap dancer ... not a very good coach.

Soccer Forum -- what's the matter?
ZipAlumn replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Board Comments, Suggestions & Technical Support
I believe, but I'm not 100% sure, that you must go to the main index page to catch the Soccer Forum. If nobody has posted to this board in a while it doesn't show on the first page of ZipsNation. When I have gone to the main index page the Soccer Forum is aways there. -
David Giffels seems to think that U Of A students are being kept in the dark about this subject. Today's Beacon Journal Click Here is critical of the students response to the Charles Plinton affair. Giffels feels that the students should be interested so I guess we will see more articles on this subject.

Campus Improvements, part...6,129b
ZipAlumn replied to urbanpreppie05's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
You hit the nail right on the head. If not for Dr. Proenza, none of this would be taking place. That guy must be one heck of a salesman because he is convincing the state to shell out all of this money for our school. I can't wait for the new football stadium. I understand that a big part of that project is going to be privately funded. I've personally known a couple of University Presidents and Dr. Proenza impresses me the most even though I have never met the man. I've seen him at baseketball games talking to people, shaking hands, and moving about the JAR. I've never seen another President do that, for one or two when they attended a game it was like a "royal procession" and the peons were expect to bow in awe. Several years ago (when Proenza was new) I became upset about something that the then AD had done that I thought was stupid, so I emailed the AD with my thoughts. Dr. Proenza emailed me back with an explanantion of why the decision was made. For the man to take the time and make the effort to do this impressed the hell out of me, especially since I still don't know how he found out about my email. -
Belated Watchers View: MAC Tourney Notes
ZipAlumn replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
That's news to me .... Division III coaches and players don't "give a crap". Now why would they play if they don't care. When Akron was Division II why did I go to Eveansville to watch the NCAA D-II Finals. Why did I drive to Tennessse to watch Terry Bradshaw and Lousianna Tech beat Akron in the Rice Bowl? Trust me everyone cares it's just a matter of what level you play at. The criticism should be intelligent and constructive not emotional and destructive. -
Several thoughts on the matter after reading the ABJ ......1st, Newspapers (ABJ included) seem to have their own slant to news, so take everything they print (or don't print) with a grain of salt.2nd, IMO the University Police should have thought twice (then thrice) about putting a convicted criminal in the dorms as an informant. Off campus housing is available, and that does not prohibit any on campus connections with drug activity. My personal experience with University Police is that they are often too impressed with their own authority. Granted this goes back many years with myself and just a couple of years ago with my daughter, but I didn't see much change over the years. 3rd, The University Hearing that found Charles Plinton "guilty" left a lot to be desired. For my money if he was found "not guilty" in criminal court, then he is not guilty. Implying that the University is responsible for his suicide is also going a bit far.4th, All in all I would hope that Proenza would take a close look at the situation and make any needed changes for the future.
-
The Beacon Journal seems to feel that they have a hot story about drugs, an informant on campus and a suicide. Link to this article:http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/14086419.htmA University President can't be knowledgable about every day to day event on campus but he should be responsible for the overall direction and policies of every department. If drugs are a big problem on campus then I don't have a problem with undercover informants. However they should not be someone with a criminal background on an incentive pay program for drug buys. Also the guidelines for the University Hearing Board probably need to be reviewed and changes made.

At one time Akron playing Temple in football was a big thing ... now they are just another team to beat and beat badly. Playing Temple in basketball could be just the same in future.

Almost everyone in this forum are Zip Fans (that "Gates fellow" is questionable) and one thing should be understood. GO ZIPS!! So what if the guy next to you sits on his hands, and you spend the entire game on your feet cheering. You are both there supporting your team, and after an exceptional play I'll bet both of you are up letting others know about it. The Zips can't compete with Ohio State now and probably never will. So what, root for the Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon and the Zips Satufday night. You probalby can't get a ticket for the horseshoe so get one an go fill the bowl. The point being win lose or draw Akron is your team so support them to the best of your ability all the time .. not just when they win. Everything else is secondary except (ready for it) .......
