  1. +1 No one wants to win a National Championship more than the players. Most, if not all of them, play year round at UA and on developmental teams to be the best. Cut them a little slack when they have an off day but are still able to win. The coaches and team recognize their shortcomings.
  2. +1 No one should be allowed to block other fans' view or drip on other fans with an umbrella. Buy a poncho. They are not that expensive.
  3. I agree the Zips played "down" last night. The usual intensity didn't seem to be there, but I must admit that I felt uneasy prior to this game. I think it was because I didn't go to the football game, and I just felt uneasy about the 'failure' in the air. It's strange that I never felt that way last season when we had a football game and soccer game on the same day. Perhaps it's because football wasn't a complete failure last year and didn't seem to drag down the whole campus. At any rate, there were several times during the game that I heard Kofi yelling to his teammates to pick up their intensity. Good to hear the team captains taking charge on the field. It was also great to see Ben Speas score what became the winning goal. I've been wanting to see Ben get more playing time this season.
  4. Tom Brady went to the University of Meeeshigan. (That's a gratuitous Bob Ufer reference. If you don't know who Ufer was. look him up He was awesome.) Otherwise, I have the same thoughts when I keep hearing what a great recruiter RI was for ND. I think BZ was referring to the fact that Tom Brady was a 6th round pick and that Weiss taught him to be one of the best QB's ever while with the New England Patriots (not at Notre Dame),
  5. Approaching #1, in the Bottom 10 Bottom 10 Week 7 "Out in the Cold:" After losing 38-10 at Ohio last week, the Zips became the first FBS team to be eliminated from bowl consideration. On a fun note: Waiting list includes "Ohio State's special teams"
  6. Thanks Zach and MDZip...that's awesome.
  7. As I posted previously (vs CSU topic), call Carrie at CSU. Her direct line is 216-687-5440. Tickets are $7 each, but may (?) be less for students.
  8. I'm with you Trimmy. "Turd" is exactly the word association I make with Akron Football this season. As for Akronad, I was always taught that "hope is not a good strategy"...Akron Football is the tried and true proof of that. It seems that's all that the powers that be do with Akron Football is hope they can find a coach, and once they select someone, hope that he can coach. Beyond the thoughtless approach to selecting a head coach, they continue to do everything they can to drive the fans away. At 5:50 pm on Tuesday evening I walked over by the North End Zone Facility area and was looking into the stadium. Although I was on the sidewalk outside of the stadium, I was told this was a closed practice and I would have to move away and not look into the stadium. Nevermind that I was dressed in full Akron gear (for the soccer game vs Michigan)... I might give away some great secret as to what they were practicing. Also, nevermind that 2 minutes later I was on the club level for the season ticket holders gathering for the soccer game and was able to look down upon the practice from there. Perhaps I misinterpreted the direction to not look into the stadium...maybe they didn't want me to get sick ( ) watching that football practice and not be able to attend the soccer game. At any rate, this treatment sure improved my interest in coming to the remaining football games, NOT!
  9. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the game at Indiana.
  10. Actually, I considered this as well but thought statisically the best thing to do would be to vote for Ampai and no one else. But perhaps diluting the number of votes makes it harder for other to gain on him. Or perhaps it makes 0 difference either way. Math/stats majors? I vote only for Ampai as well...once at home and once at work. It seems to me to be best to only vote for Amapai so that I'm not helping others at all.
  11. I was also there. The 5-1 final score, in Ann Arbor, was awesome. I must admit that when the Zips defeated Michigan in the Spring at Ultimate Soccer Arenas, I remember at least 1 UM player shaking hands with 2 Rowdies on the sideline after the game and saying he would see them in Akron in the Fall. From what I could overhear, it sounded like a very classy acknowledgment of the AK-Rowdies involvement in the game vs little-to-none from his own fans (in his own state). I was one of the four ROWDIES that made the trip to Pontiac for that tournament. It ended up being a blast, especially because I won a raffle and received a Jabulani. I don't remeber a player talking to us, but there was a Michigan fan who if I recall, mentioned he played soccer with Perry at I forget what level. As the four of us walked down to our end that kid said "yeah Akron!" and high fived each of us. He came down later and asked when the rest of us ROWDIES we're going to be there haha. He was surprised to hear there were only four of us coming after all of the students that showed up last year. After chatting with us for a bit he said "well I'm gonna go back to my seat and watch you guys destroy us," then he took of the Michigan vest he had on. What a great sport. Hopefully we get a big turnout tomorrow night I could be wrong, but I swore there was a Michigan player, at the very end of the game, who walked around the right end of the field (as you faced the pitch from the seats) and stopped long enough to say he would see you in Akron in the Fall. I'm probably wrong. I did remember there were 4 of you, but I only remember 2 on the sideline when the Michigan player walked by.

From what I could overhear, it sounded like a very classy acknowledgment of the AK-Rowdies involvement in the game vs little-to-none from his own fans (in his own state). EDIT: Article from last year in the Michigan Daily: Zips tear Michigan men's soccer to shreds By Jake Feldman Daily Sports Writer On October 20th, 2009 The Michigan men's soccer team battled No. 1 Akron yesterday at the U-M Soccer Complex, but if you had sat in the stands with your eyes closed, you wouldn’t have known you were in Ann Arbor. A small pack of Akron enthusiasts overpowered the lethargic Michigan crowd, hooting and hollering every time the Wolverines slipped up or the Zips made a play. Unfortunately for Michigan, they had a lot to hoot and holler about. The Zips pummeled the Wolverines 5-1 in one of Michigan’s poorest performances of the season. Akron (14-0-0) pressured Wolverine defenders and forwards alike, forcing errant passes that often translated into Michigan turnovers. The Zips were equally as aggressive on the attacking half, moving the ball quickly and catching the Wolverines out of position. “We knew we were going to be up against a good team,” senior captain Julian Robles said. “I don’t know why, maybe we just gave them too much respect and didn’t play our game.” Akron’s stingy defense has surrendered just three goals on a mere 25 shots on goal this season. Nevertheless, Michigan (1-2 Big Ten, 9-4-1 overall) hung with the top-ranked Zips early on. In the 10th minute, freshman forward Hamoody Saad sent a perfect pass to junior forward Justin Meram who streaked into the opposing box. With a clear shot at the goal, Meram was blanked by the keeper. “He certainly could have put the score at 1-0 for us,” Michigan coach Steve Burns said. “You score early, and suddenly, the game takes on a whole different flavor.” But the Wolverines didn’t score first, and the only flavor Burns’s team would taste for the remainder of the contest would be sour. The Wolverines allowed three goals in a five-minute span and trailed 3-0 at halftime. Meram netted Michigan’s only goal in the 48th minute, but the Zips quickly quelled any hopes for a comeback by scoring on the ensuing possession. Sophomore forward Darlington Nagbe notched his first career hat trick in the Akron victory. While the Zips joined their rowdy fans at the edge of the field to celebrate their 14th consecutive victory, Michigan players circled their disgruntled coach. Frustrated, they shook their heads as they reflected on the woes of the game. The Wolverines had not been so handily outplayed since a humbling 5-0 loss to Notre Dame in the season opener back on Sept. 1. They responded to that defeat with seven straight wins. “Sometimes a thorough ass-kicking cleanses your soul,” Burns said. “And sometimes that’s what your team needs. I think we’ll be a team that responds to that because now you get to pay attention to some of the little details that slip away from you.”
  14. Great quote from Caleb Porter in Michael Beaven's article on Ohio.com: ''It is rewarding to see that after five years we are where we wanted to be. When I came here, the vision was to get to this point and here we are with a team that is capable of beating anybody in the country and doing it in a way that is attractive. I wish we would have won more than 79 out of 100, to be honest to you, but that is pretty good. Overall, it shows the consistency we have had over the past five years playing a difficult schedule. We don't play a cupcake schedule. We play the best teams in the country.'' http://www.ohio.com/sports/105125474.html
  15. "good"...not a term I would apply to our Head Coach (or any of his assistants). Perhaps this book would help...
  16. I heard that last night, too. It was awesome. Zakuani had a great game...what moves to dribble around the goalkeeper and score that first goal. His name kept coming up, over and over. And, the crowd...the Sounders, by far, have the best fans in MLS. Sold out and most of them standing and chanting throughout the match. You could barely hear the referee's whistle at times. I would love to go to a Sounders game at Qwest Field! Seattle qualified for the MLS playoffs, by the way, and I think I heard they have the best record since July (?). That would be cool if they can keep that going in the playoffs and Zakuani and company win the MLS Cup.
  17. Although you can't spell DOUCHEBAG without OU, I don't look for the kitties to lose. Akron 10 OU 31 JZ's avatar is great.
  18. I lived out of state for 11 years from June 1987 - June 1998. With much of that time being before Al Gore invented the internet , I could not easily follow the Zips. I guess that was a good thing in 1994.
  19. You're right about Temple, but I couldn't remember if they were a "good" team at that time. They still didn't quite seem to be on par with a Tennessee or Nebraska, etc. Of course, Cowlumbus State believed it was beneath them at that time to play MAC opponents, especially those in Ohio, if I remember correctly.
  20. Looking at the 2007 Football Media Guide, the worst year in Division I-A was 1994 1994: 1-10 (defeated Ohio 24-10 in last game, & btw, no "bcs" opponents) 1960: 1-8 1951: 1-8 1942: 0-7-2 1931: 1-7 1925: 1-7 1915: 1-7-1 1903: 0-2 1896: 0-1 1894: 0-3 1891: 1-3 (no head coach, just a team captain...I wonder what the result would be in 2010? ) EDIT: 1994 schedule (sorry I brought it up) Date Results S3 Temple L 7-32 S10 Bowling Green* L 0-45 S17 at Can't* L 16-32 S24 at Western Michigan* L 6-19 O8 at Miami* L 14-50 O15 Central Michigan* L 0-47 O22 Toledo* L 25-48 O29 at Youngstown State L 7-41 N5 at Eastern Michigan* L 18-42 N12 at Ball State* L 28-38 N19 Ohio* W 24-10
  21. Just build a new stadium and you will be good.....It worked for us....... ...then go out and hire a bunch of coaches who couldn't win at Notre Dame, but will somehow win at Akron...
  22. UN-DER-STA-TED
  23. I'm concerned about Meves not being in goal, but I can tell you firsthand that you could not have stood in goal at NIU and come away with a win. Poni did a great job, making a number of saves.
  24. Having been there, it was a dirty game by a dirty team. The referee started out fine, then lost control by not making obvious calls starting about halfway through the first half. Meves was hurt by a cheap shot. Hopefully, he will be ready for the Penn State game. Poni was great. I hope the Rowdies are relentless if NIU comes to Lee Jackson Field for the MAC Tournament.
  25. Great to see Poni get in the game. Go Zips!
