  1. I agree. Being on the Akron staff last season and at Syracuse for a few seasons prior to that doesn't seem like any kind of positive resume.
  2. The Zips Men's Soccer Team won the College Athlete of the Year at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. Josh Cribbs won the Professional Athlete of the Year Award.

  4. Nice acceptance speech by Caleb. Also cool that Kenny Lofton presented the award.
  5. Don't know. The trip to Xenia is on the Spring schedule and is a "soccer event" involving schools that aren't necessarily local.
  6. Porter talked about playing home against Cleveland State at the American Outlaws' USA/Chile watch party a few weeks ago. Also, Maryland at home too i've heard. Yes, Caleb said the Zips are home against Cleveland State, Xavier, and Maryland this Spring. He also mentioned 2 games in one day at Ultimate Soccer Arenas (nice place) in Pontiac, MI...one of them against the Wolverines...as well as a trip to Xenia, OH.
  7. Thanks Crew8. This is an awesome article, but even more significant is that the recruiting class was announced on GoZips.com this morning, and Major League Soccer (MLSSoccer.com) posted an article this afternoon!
  8. AWESOME! Akron Zips Men's Soccer
  9. Chivas 1, San Jose 0 CARSON, Calif. (Monday, February 7, 2011) – Chivas USA earned a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the club’s first match against MLS competition of the 2011 preseason, with forward Alan Gordon scoring the game’s only goal. The Red-and-White now have two wins and no losses during preseason, and have yet to concede a goal in 195 minutes of play. In a match that consisted of three 35-minute periods, Chivas USA came out with a strong lineup and nearly took an early lead when midfielder Blair Gavin, playing his first game since returning from a hamstring injury in 2010, placed a header on net that was saved by San Jose’s Jon Busch. Both teams then traded chances, with Bobby Convey forcing a good save out of Chivas goalkeeper Zach Thornton, and Paulo Nagamura sliding a low shot just wide. The Red-and-White gained the lead midway through the second session when Alan Gordon received a chip behind the defense played by Victor Estupiñan. Gordon took a couple touches inside the box and then slotted a shot past the San Jose goalkeeper and into the net to give Chivas USA the advantage. It was Gordon’s second goal of the preseason, and the assist went to Estupiñan, who had also scored in the Red-and-White’s first match against the Fresno Fuego. Chivas USA will have tomorrow off before returning to training on Wednesday and Thursday at The Home Depot Center. On Friday the team travels to Phoenix, Arizona, where it will scrimmage against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday. 10. Darlington Nagbe, Timbers tie VC Fusion ..."Darlington Nagbe, the No. 2 overall pick (from the University of Akron, naturally) in last month's MLS draft, scored at the start of the second half to give the Timbers a 1-1 draw with the Ventura County Fusion in front of 1,400 at Ventura College."...
  11. Nagbe's goal EDIT: Another video
  12. I trust your "very reliable source" over a random live chat posting. So, is Gallego coming or no? Anyone? Here it is: Kinnelon Athletes Sign Letters of Intent Good looks ZipMe. Can anyone confirm Trapp having signed today? That would be the last, no? Can't confirm yet that he has signed, but this says that he was supposed to do so today (Feb 4, 2011).

  14. Congrats Crew8. If I read this correctly, the Akron chapter has enough members to be an official chapter. I'm glad that I could help. http://twitter.com/AmericanOutlaws "Congrats to Brooklyn for becoming Official AO Chapter. Waiting on Minneapolis & Akron for their App but have enough, & Buffalo almost there!"

  17. According to the attached pdf of the Fall 2002 Alumni Magazine (blue box on page 27), a Men's Soccer trip to Spain occurred in August 2003. I admit that I had lost touch with Zips sports when I lived out of state and didn't start following again until 2005. Does anyone remember the referenced trip occurring (when Lolla was HC)? EDIT: attachment failed; try this link: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=...6dg&cad=rja
  18. I will echo the sentiment that this is AWESOME! I could barely contain myself when I first heard it from my source (which is reliable), but many thanks for the confirmation.
  19. +1000 I keep searching all over the internet to actually find a schedule that reads "Real Madrid (reserves) vs Akron Zips" March xx, 2011.
  20. I heard about the trip to Spain about 2 weeks ago, but didn't have a link or the full info. Thanks for posting this!

  22. +10 Also: There is a long standing, if not widely known, soccer tradition @ Akron. The roots are as deep here as any place in America. Ask not how did this happen; rather ask what took so long? Good points.
  23. Regardless of whether or not folks understand the size of The University of Akron, I love all of the "press" that we are getting. Here's another article from Chivas USA Training Camp about Zarek Valentin, where Caleb Porter and The University of Akron are mentioned a few times.
