I thought I read that height wasn't any sort of advantage in soccer? You caught that, too.

U.S. U-20 MNT Tops China at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland July 27, 2010 BALLYMENA, Northern Ireland (July 26, 2010) -- The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team opened its campaign at the prestigious Milk Cup with a 1-0 victory against China. Forward Omar Salgado scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute, while goalkeeper Zac MacMath and defenders Zarek Valentin, Perry Kitchen, Gale Agbossoumonde and Greg Garza held onto the shutout. Valentin was mobile from his right back position and got forward in the first half via a give and go with Alex Molano to get into the corner. Valentin touched it back for Molano, who played a good ball into the area, where the 6-foot 4-inch Salgado jumped over his defender to head the ball in at he back post in his first international game. The U.S. will next play Denmark on Wednesday, July 28, at 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET) with a chance to advance to the championship game of the tournament's Elite division. No. We needed someone who has proven that they know how to run a football program as a head coach. How in love are you with Notre Dame that you believe that Ianello is at all qualified to do that just by virtue of him cleaning Charlie Weis' man-bras? Notre Dame is not what it used to be, it's not some great college football mecca, and hasn't been for 20 years. Stop living in the past. Notre Dame is just a step above the MAC, and a step behind the big Ten. Being at a "big program" just means that they don't understand what it takes to run a program that isn't big. At all his previous jobs, Ianello's recruits were falling over themselves to join a BCS school or Notre Dame. He didn't have to work to get recruits at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Meyer If you do some research, life will be easier for you down the road. But you are young and prone to being rash. But since you are a Zip...I have high hopes for you still!!! ;-) Go Zips!!!! You're right, Darkwaters. Steve Zakuani Night in Seattle

Praise from SAF! I was thinking maybe he was referring to Kei Kamara, who had a goal and assist, but Teal WAS playing the central striker. We'll take it! KC Star (article below) KC Wizards stadium commercial with Kamara, Bunbury ... is awesome Charles Gooch The Kansas City Star During last night's broadcast of the Kansas City Wizards-Manchester United game, fans were treated to the Wizards new commercial for their new stadium. And... it was funny and awesome. It stars forwards Kei Kamara and Teal "That Big Lad Up Front" Bunbury* getting ready for the stadium opening. *Teal's new nickname comes from Sir Alex Ferguson himself. Thanks Z.I.P. I watched the highlights of that game on the Sounders website at lunch. Wish I could have seen it (too late Eastern time) or had a DVR. I'm actually going to be in LA on August 14th and am looking forward to seeing Seattle at Chivas USA. -

Although I agree that RI deserves a chance, I disagree with believing "we got the best that was out there". IMHO, Wistrcill did not give due diligence to the search for a head coach. He took the easy way out and hired a former acquaintance. I don't like RI's qualifications (i.e., "lack thereof") and am not excited about football season. I did renew my season ticket, but I fully expect to just go and watch with little to get excited about. I'm certain there were numerous successful head coaches at FCS and lower division schools who would have taken the opportunity to move to FBS. Although nothing is guaranteed, a successful HC from a lower division would have given me more confidence in his abilities to "run" a football team. People around here lost credibility when you guys starting calling for Larry Kehres of Mt Union and guys alike. I don't care if RI was a waterboy at Notre Dame, he has a better resume than some guy who coaches D2 or D3 football. The only way I could accept even a FCS coach is if they had a handful of National Championships and even then I might not think too much of them. We needed someone from a big school. Well, we agree to DISAGREE then. You may think you're all-knowing, but you're not. We'll see how this plays out. The only part of your statement upon which we agree is your use of the waterboy analogy...it's close to the mark. Yeah Assistant Head Coach and Interim Head Coach is so close to waterboy. Assistant HC - offense; what is that? Interim HC...when? during which games did he serve as HC? I've already shared more of my misgivings than I ever wanted to on this forum. As I said, I renewed my season ticket and will see how it plays out. I will gladly "eat crow" if/when my expectations are more than exceeded.

Last year's Zips squad proved that height doesn't really matter. I doubt this is the case with Akron getting these two, but most colleges will often choose to go after players who are big-bodied and play physical kick-the-ball-forward american style soccer instead of shorter ones who know how to play the beautiful game. I don't think that's what Akron is doing here, as I said. I just don't see the need for taller players in soccer outside the keeper position. I don't know...taller strikers may be helpful scoring head shots off of corner kicks.

339 minute scoreless streak! Three games and 69 minutes without a goal. I wouldn't expect KC to suddenly become a title contender -- or likely even a playoff contender -- but I'd sure look for Teal Bunbury to get a lot more playing time in the next weeks, if the KC coach wishes to keep his job. the only other real goal scorer on their side is Kei Kamara, and there aren't many defenses that he scares. By the way, would FSC and other announcers please learn his name -- it's pronounced Kay, not Kai! Oh, well. Way to go Buns. Now if Seattle can just win a game -- think they're on ESPN2 on Thursday. Columbus takes on NYRB on Saturday -- will Thierry Henry be in uniform?? Seattle vs DC United tonight at 8 pm EDT (I believe) on ESPN2.

Teal scored the only and winning goal. I believe it was his first MLS goal, and KC's 1st road win this season. Teal started and played the entire game. After his goal, he went to the sideline and saluted the crowd, just like last season with the Zips. ONN would not show who he was saluting, if anyone in particular. If anyone reading this was there, was he saluting AK-Rowdies or other Zips' fans in the crowd? Go Zips! EDIT: KC 1, Col 0 Bunbury returned to Ohio where he played last season for the University of Akron and scored his first MLS goal in the 14th minute to end KC's 339-minute scoreless streak. Wizards Manager Peter Vermes had made two changes to the starting lineup from last week’s 2-0 loss to Chivas USA, with midfielder Craig Rocastle going for Jack Jewsbury and Bunbury taking the place of forward Josh Wolff.

That may be true, but recognize that "tampering" is against NBA rules. It sure looks like tampering brought Wade, Bosh, James, and Pat Riley together after their Olympics together. However, like all other NBA rules, the "tampering" rule apparently does not apply to "elite" players and coaches. Seems that NBA rules off the court are as big a SHAM as they are on the court. Well the Cavs and Raptors would be stupid to push for a tampering investigation considering they both just signed and traded their guys, wouldn't that look like a little odd? Yes, it sure would RootforRoo. I thought the same thing...everyone takes the easy way out. -

Amen Spin...that the real heroes play in the JAR (and elsewhere for The University of Akron Zips' teams). I've told the Athletics Dept. in the past that those LeBron James banners take away from the banners that rightfully hang there...the University of Akron Zips' players and coaches. GO ZIPS!

Zip_ME87 replied to ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
A little perspective here. The idea that Akron is really a stand alone entity is silly. It is part of the larger Cleveland/Akron/Canton demo, and in fact if you look up the Nielson ratings, not to mention the general perception at large, Akron is considered to be very much a part of the larger "NE Ohio" cluster of cities, led by Cleveland. Get on I-77 or I-71 any morning or afternoon and they are loaded with commuters coming and going between the two areas. Most sports fans here are fans of the major league teams in Cleveland. I know I am. Also, based on how any of the cities in NE Ohio have done, economically, in the last 30 years, there isn't one of them that would likely stand on its own if it really were isolated from the others. Lastly, LeDrama has lived in Bath township for years, as has his mother. For those of you who don't know, many of those white collar commuters going and coming on I-77 to Cleveland every morning are Bath residents. Get as far as Richfield and residents there consider themselves no more affiliated with Akron than Cleveland. LeBron is a native Akronite, yes. And let's be clear that my OP, while expressing my outrage at the way he screwed the team and the community, addressed the issue of the UA-LeDrama connection and whether it will be good for the university to continue the close connection. I think it will be bad for the university. For those of you who remember Modell moving the Browns, there were locals at that time who defended Modell to be sure. However, the prevalent feeling was one of ugly betrayal, just like with LeQuit at this point. Those feelings are very likely to intensify, and there will at some point be backlash against the university if it stays cozy with the guy. I also believe it very likely that with all of the bluster about his love for Akron, we are about to witness him become scarce here. He and his hangers-on will get a taste of life there and he'll decide that it's easier to be there than deal with people here crapping on him for what he did. It's not easy to pay the piper, bro. I personally agree with you SeeTeeZip. In my opinion, UA will eventually have to cut the cord with LeBron. But, for now the best I think they can do is tone it down. They have Nike contracts and possibly other commitments. I don't work for UA and have few inside connections. I recommend sending your concerns to Tom Wistrcill in a carefully thought out e-mail with the proper use of "LeBron"'s name, as opposed to venting. I recommend others do the same, no matter on which side of this you stand. TW is not from here, and I don't believe he can fully comprehend this without input. I sent him a question through the "Ask the AD" feature on GoZips.com, and the response that I received was basically "Good question. I hadn't really considered it given the new-ness of the news." I suspect he hadn't considered the effect on UA whatsoever. In my response to his response, I referred to LeBron several times as "LeBum", which I realize now was a mistake. Fortunately, that was my only "angry" reference. I only asked that TW give this issue and UA Athletic's stance serious consideration. -

Bingo!! Those of you posting as if you are a part of this "everyone in NE Ohio hates LeBron" mentality are badly off the mark. Diehard Cavs fans...maybe so. But among Zips fans and others in the area, I'm not seeing it. LeBron chose to give his services to another employer. It happens all the time. If you are a big Cavs fan, I feel your pain. You just lost your best player. I get it. But, do yourself a favor and stop trying to ease your pain by convincing yourself that everyone now hates this guy. I'm really upset that some Zips fans and Akronites have allowed themselves to get consumed in the immature name-calling and bashing. I read that hundreds of cars passed LeBron's house honking their horn and yelling obscenities? What is this going to accomplish?? Come on folks!! Talk about negative publicity!!! This is our chance to separate ourselves from the "mistake on the lake". If we continue to do things like this, call LeBron names, and applaud the irrational and unprofessional comments of their owner, we will continue to be considered a part of that loser city. Is that what we want? A few considerations... I'm sick of this Akron vs Cleveland thing. I'm and Ohioan...what's good for Ohio is good for me. I'm an American...what's good for the USA, is good for me. Where does this Akron vs Cleveland mentality stop. "I'm from Stow, I don't care about Hartville. I'm from Akron; who cares about Barberton. I'm from Green; you suck because you're from Hudson." How about "I live on Market St.; you suck because you live on Main St." LOL! It is also pathetic that anyone in Cleveland would state "This is the worse thing in my life", referring to LeBron leaving. Wow, if that's true, I want that guy's life. It has to be awesome to be him. I totally agree about the name-calling; I can understand "LeBurn", "LeBum", "LeGone", etc. But, attacking his mom and actually driving past his house to shout obscenities is way beyond rational. The man had a right to leave. But, I also have a right to see his words as nothing more than a sham...never backed up by real actions. Everything LeBron does is about LeBron. You are naive to believe that any of it is about Akron. If any of it is about Akron, which part of Akron? Does that include Green? Stow? Hudson? Hartville? Barberton? Do residents of those cities really consider themselves part of Akron or want to be part of Akron? Sorry, Skip-Zip, but I just don't buy the Cleveland vs Akron thing. I'm a UA Almunus, not an Akronite. I happen to love Akron and Cleveland and Stow and Hartville, and Hudson, and... because I love NEO. I left NEO for 11 years because I had to for work. But, I always wanted to return. It took me 11 years to do so, but I made it back and there's nowhere else I want to be. I won't trash any part of it for another...I lived from the Dover-New Phila area to Westlake and places in between. It all matters to me. LeBron is "LeGone". We, including me, need to get over it...and UA needs to tone it down for awhile. Most issues in this world are not one or the other...compromise; don't take it away from those who still believe and don't flaunt it in the faces of those who don't or never did. I believe that's the best UA can do right now. -

Spin, that is not true. Those banners were there during the "Meet the Team" event last year for Men's and Women's Basketball. I've also been told by members of the UA athletics staff that they use them and the connection with LeBron for recruiting. They only take them down during the actual basketball season. I am in total agreement with others that UA, at a minimum, needs to tone down its connection with LeBron. He is damaged goods in NEO and can hurt UA as much, if not more, than he helps. And as far as his help, have you ever seen LeBron really "donate" to anything? His "donations" are always very public events that bring more attention to HIM than to insert charity/issue. It's always been about "Me" (It will be interesting to see if that changes where he has 2 others playing at or close to the same level.) When he was one of us, it was easy to be blinded to it. I've always felt that way about him, but realized that overall he was good for the "psyche" of the area. So, I went along with it. But, for anyone to think that UA won't be hurt by continuing to flaunt their LeBron relationship, you're totally blind to reality. UA cannot just walk away. They have a Nike contract. But, they do need to consider the issue and take appropriate steps to tone it down for awhile and see where it's going. If Tom Witrcill doesn't see this, then he is as pathetic a leader as some of this board's members have stated in the past. KD is too close to LeBron to make a reasonable judgment...I lay this totally on Tom Wistrcill. -
skip-zip, I agree completely. My anger stems from the way LeBum did it. On national television? And, he can say the money went to charity, but that is more evidence of his ME attitude. Has he ever donated any of his own money to anything? As far as the Cavs, I never liked Danny Ferry as GM (or player...Ron Harper trade was terrible) and Mike Brown was a horrible coach (more of Ferry's stupidity). So, the Cavs certainly share the blame in not winning a championship. However, 7 teams won the NBA championship without LeBum during his tenure with the Cavs. Therefore, the Cavs could certainly win one without LeBum also if they make the right moves/decisions. Byron Scott is a good start, but next season's roster is a huge question. Go Zips soccer and football. I'll be re-evaluating Men's Bball given the relationship with LeBum. (I never really cared for it much but tolerated it.)

If he keeps going the arrogant direction he is going, not many are going to have his back. The people of Akron are decent people and they will turn their back on continued displays of LBJ 24/7, produced by ESPN. He needs to fire the person who is giving him the advice that everything is about him. +1

I'm sure there are plenty of folks who have some "slightly wet" land in South Florida they can sell you cheap so you can move down there with your AKRON hero. LeBron SAYS he's loyal to Akron, but his actions don't support his words. Other than holding events and getting us Nike uniforms, what has LeBron done for UA or Akron? Did he say anything on his callous special last night about appreciating the support of fans in Akron? How does Dwayne Wade's b*tch help Akron by winning an NBA Championship with Wade and Bosch. The focus won't even be on LeBron, and Akron will never be mentioned. "Other than holding events..." Okay, it's now obvious that he'll never do enough in your eyes. It's simply a fact that he's brought the city and university unprecedented exposure. Heck, Google's probably hotter with "Akron" right now than with "Paris," "London," or "New York." Additionally, the only way LeBron leaves Akron on a permanent basis is if Akronites drive him out because they wish they were from Cleveland. LeBron's proud to be from Akron. Are we? There seems as if there will be a line drawn between Cleveland Cavs fans and LeBron fans. Many Akronites are Cleveland Cavs fans. We'll see where the stronger loyalty lies. It's an easy and clear distinction for me; I'm not a Cleveland Cavs fan. If they were the Akron Cavs, that'd be another story. LeBron, on the other hand, is actually from our city. Why should I care where he gets paid to play professional ball? Ironically (and, like much irony, this may seem counter-intuitive), LeBron's actually done the Akron area a favor in that he has now drawn the proverbial line in the sand. It's about time someone from Akron did. He has now made the deliniation quite clear: Where does our loyalty reside? How do we view ourselves? As the Akron area, or as a suburb of Cleveland? If Akron turns on LeBron in favor of Cleveland, I think I'll be crushed and probably give up hope of our fair city ever truly having an identity in, and of, ourselves. Wow. You will buy anything.
