I actually prefer McManamon's article in the ABJ today:What a Great Weekend for UA, MAC"It begins (note: It does not kick off) with the nation's No. 1-ranked soccer team playing Indiana at 7:30 on the UA campus tonight.Forget about tickets for that game, hosted by the nation's No. 1 team. It's a sellout. That is what happens when the nation's No. 1 team plays.Have we mentioned the Zips are ranked first? In the country?"And..."This weekend is UA's opportunity — in two sports. It starts with soccer, with coach Caleb Porter leading the top-ranked Zips against the school where he starred and was an assistant coach before coming to UA.Porter said he has completely detached himself from those emotions, but he understands what the match tonight means during Alumni Weekend. The sellout is the first in UA's 54-year soccer history. Indiana is a perennial soccer power, and ranked eighth or 10th in the nation, depending on the poll of preference. (UA, by the way, is ranked No. 1 in both polls.)''You can't put it into words,'' Porter said. ''We've been working very hard over the last four years to build our program. To play the brand we want to play. To be able to go head to head with teams like Indiana and not hope to win, but expect to win.''There's a huge buzz and an energy. When I took this job, that's what we wanted to have happen, with time. I think we're finally getting to that point where we're there. Yet we still have a long journey ahead.''''I'm not a soccer guru, by any means,'' UA football coach J.D. Brookhart said. ''But I love watching that team. They're athletic. The precision of their play is pretty amazing to me. A lot of great athletes out there.''

Most Beautiful Thing You Ever Saw?

VMD that is awesome. -
Thanks to the moderator who fixed the link. Can you explain the "tinyurl" thing to us non-expert users?Sure .. it's been posted before .. but probably time again. If you have a long url or one that might get jumbled, you go to www.tinyurl.com and enter the long link in a box, and it gives you a modified small link that will redirect people to the same place. It's particularly useful for things like mapquest directions & winkflush sites ..Go Zips! Thanks ZW. I hadn't seen this before. I'll bookmark that site.

I loved the traveling bands also...fantastic idea. I loved everything about today. The atmosphere of being on campus is absolutely incredible. The students were awesome. The parties and tailgating were fantastic. WE ARE AKRON was the feeling that I had from the moment I drove up Exchange St. 3.5 hours before kickoff.

Those are great pics. Thanks!

The ones you linked to are the ones actually worn by the team. You can see them on Humpty Hitchens from a link earlier in this threadhttp://uaim.dyndns.info/photo_galleries/_A...e/021109015.htmThose are not available publicly as far as I know, I think they are exclusively for the UA men's team. The other shoes are the collectors edition (who would have ever thought sneakers would become collector's items?) that are available to the general public. From what I understand there were only about 3,000 pairs made. That's what I thought. I wish Nike would release a similar shoe that is available to the public. I believe I've seen one for some team in Central Ohio.
-
I'm confused about which shoes are actually for our team. I thought the Nike Zoom LeBron Soldier II University of Akron PE was the shoe designed specifically for our Men's Basketball team at the name would indicate. I like the shoe with the Akron Skyline, but I would much prefer to have these Blue & Gold beauties (or something similar), especially since the UA logo is actually visible.

Zips Apparently Heading to Daytona for Winter Break?
Zip_ME87 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Looking at 2008, I don't understand the tournament format. Only 7 teams are listed. 1 team (WV Tech) only played in the first round. Another team didn't play in the first round, but played in the rounds at Daytona.Glenn Wilkes Classic -
I was in Akron over the weekend and added some new pictures of the stadium to my folder at:Infocision Stadium.(Latest pictures are 6781 - 6816)If the link doesn't work, tryfwelliott.winkflush.com (of course, change the "u" to an "a" to make it work)

I met her at the Spring Game 2 years ago; Wonderful lady...and it became obvious after just a few minutes talking to her how devoted to the Zips she was. She'll be greatly missed.

Soccer schedule released
Zip_ME87 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I have to gladly second that! I was already planning on a return to the Carrier Dome, and with the UB Soccer game at 7:30 pm, it makes perfect sense to take that in as well and then hop back on the NY Thruway for the additional 2 to 2 1/2 hours to Syracuse. Perfect! An early season lake effect snow and you could go cross-country skiing, as well! -

It won't. I will keep it clear of OSU stuff and on-topic. I promise. -

I'm with you CK. That's the first thing I noticed when I saw this schedule yesterday. It would be great to defeat the Hoosiers in Futbol at Jackson Field on Friday and then defeat them in Football at Summa Field on Saturday. -
It's not "man-love" to appreciate good people and to let them know they are appreciated. Sorry that you choose to have such a depressing outlook.I come to this board to get up-to-date and inside information on all things UA and maybe talk some smack. But, I don't come here to bash people.Quickzips - I didn't have a problem with GoZips original post. I thought it was well written.

Count me among those who are disappointed by the negative comments on this thread. In addition to getting choked up during his speech, Coach Boals came across very sincere in a one-on-one conversation about his time at Akron and it's being difficult to leave.During the celebration, Coach Dambrot made us take an oath to keep the faith in this program (referring to what he knows many fans were doing when the Zips were losing in the 1st round of the MAC Tourney against Toledo). He's absolutely right, everything doesn't play out exactly the way you'd like it to, but KEEP THE FAITH. Shaka Smart moved on, and KD found Jeff Boals. Jeff Boals is moving on, and I trust that KD will find another great assistant. (By the way, when I told KD one-on-one that we had a good man...referring to him, he immediately replied "I'm not going anywhere".)Again, best wishes Coach Boals.

I added some new and older pictures of the stadium. They are atInfocision Stadium.Scroll down to see the latest photos with the new dorm foundation work. (Latest pictures are 6681-6704. I cannot get the older pictures to move to the beginning for some reason.)
-
As an Alumnus, I'll 2nd the highlight comment and also say that the most fun I had at the MAC Tourney was at the semi-final game (against BUGS), when I sat on the edge of the Rowdies section and joined in the chants.

As far as sports venues go, ours is a bargain.
-
It may look great, but can you imagine that place in November? Is it really a good idea for one of the Big Eleven's least successful teams to be exposing their fans to additional misery.
-
Great pics. Thanks.

Count me in. Good luck to coach Boals! But the Zips are and will be again. OSUcks!

A MAC team has won a National Championship. Bowling Green won in Hockey in 1984 i believe. I don't believe Miami would have brought the MAC a National Championship. I think they are in the CCHA for hockey.Miami is in the CCHA. How fitting though, i'm glad they lost. I hope it felt the same way that bank shot felt for us.BGSU did win in 1984, but they were CCHA for hockey then, the same as I believe they are now. No MAC national championship.
