  1. AWESOME. Congratulations Teal, congratulations Coach Porter, and CONGRATULATIONS ZIPS MEN'S SOCCER on a great season!
  2. +1, 2009 was a good year (sorry, I guess this is off topic since it wasn't a good year for Zips football)...The trip to Cary for the College Cup was my main Christmas present. The trip to Portland in March was my main birthday present (my birthday is March 20). And, by the way, I made a good friend in meeting CK on that trip. Thanks to CK and the other moderators for setting up ZN and keeping it going. Merry Christmas!
  3. You're a Ken Dorsey fan?Ken Dorsey was #11, and I think #5 was garcia, or more recently ratliff...charlie was #9 while he played with clevelandThat's what I get for being a smart*ss. (I knew Charlie was #9 in Cleveland.)
  4. You're a Ken Dorsey fan?
  5. That leaves plenty of time for ACC lobbying for Corben.http://www.nscaa.com/articles/20091211133417536.phpI think the Hermann voting was done before the top 15 were even announced. So lobbying now is pointless. The link below is for last year's voting process (No "Wednesday, Nov 30th" 2009), but the timing is similar every year.Hermann voting
  6. Both teams bunkered for the second half of the games because they knew they were toast if they didn't out number the Zips in the box. This with the Zips 2 best playmakers (Ampi & Nanchoff) not playing or not at full strength.2 ACC programs played the Zips and didn't score a regulation goal. And the Zips didn't come close to bunkering in either game.I'd take my chances with the Zips playing an ACC schedule. They clearly outplayed both UVA and UNC in regulation & overtime. Do they run the table? Who knows .. but they'd have a better chance of running the table in the ACC than anyone currently in the ACC or in the NCAA for that matter.Go Zips!! B) +1
  7. The College Cup was played at Crew Stadium in 2001 and 2003. In 2001 North Carolina defeated Indiana 2-0 and in 2003 Indiana defeated St. Johns 2-1.Yes, and as cold as it was in NC, there's no reason the College Cup couldn't come back to Columbus. Go Zips!
  8. NOT ENOUGH. Not when you turn away fans, make fans (and students) pay money to sit on the frozen ground or stand for 2 1/2 hours. With a halfway decent facility, soccer could be another revenue generating sport, benefitting ALL programs. When's the last time the basketball team brought in nationally ranked teams in the non-con, and sold the place out?The soccer program hosts HOSTS conference tournaments and early rounds of the NCAA tournament and that sorry excuse for a high school soccer stadium is inadequate. We need to sell tickets right up to game time, and give those people a place to sit. We need to have lighting that will allow games to be on TV. You have a chance of building something BIG in northeast Ohio, and this crap of slapping more lipstick on the pig, while catering to the traditional revenue sports is going to bite the U in the ass.As good as we are and have been at Soccer, it is NOT a sport with a national following. It adds little to the prestige of the school.Football and BBall are THE college sports. AND, the BBall team has been going to the post season, so there is hope for a national program.I say put the money into basketball. Last year they were on national TV a few times, and do add to our prestige.I guess it depends on which nation you're in! (What, no shoulder shrug emoticon?) I've gotten several comments from friends and colleagues about Akron playing for a national championship last weekend. I got only one remark -- from my friend who was visiting Portland at Big Dance time last year, about the first round NCAA game. In my book, Caleb deserves as much, if not more $$ than my classmate Keith. When BB makes a Final Four, we can reassess. +1 I've heard from numerous colleagues at work about the Zips Men's Soccer team before and after the College Cup. There are many more soccer fans in Northeast Ohio than the football/basketball crowd are willing to admit. There are a lot of kids playing soccer here, and consequently, it is easy to get them and their parents interested in our Zips. A colleague of mine (not a UA alum) took his kids to a regular season game on my advice; he and his family enjoyed it so much, they returned for 4 more regular season games and the 3rd Tourney game (Tulsa). His 12-yr old son became so hooked that he couldn't sleep after the Championship game. IMHO, we haven't yet seen the crowds that our soccer Zips can draw and the merchandise they could sell. Northeast Ohio media really only jumped on the bandwagon after the Zips made the College Cup.I love KD and our basketball team (fortunate enough to be a season ticket holder there, too). But, as KD said, the new arena can wait for the new soccer pitch.
  9. They were $50 in person and $55 with the handling fee by phone. Best decision that I made in 2009! GO ZIPS! I'm looking forward to the spring exhibition season. These guys are so much FUN to watch.
  10. I heard that on ZipsLive also. AWESOME!
  11. I didn't see Ampi getting any treatment on the sidelines. He was jogging along the sidelines in front of us like he was trying to work it out and keep his muscles warm to come back into the game. Then he stopped and stood at the end of the bench nearest the goal watching the rest of the game.
  12. By the way, in Minnesota, they also think the Zips should be 24-0-0.Teal Bunbury is Hermann Trophy Finalist
  13. For the record, from the 2008-2009 NCAA Soccer Rule Book at ncaa.org:7.1.2 For postseason games, which include conference tournaments and NCAA tournament games, two sudden-victory overtime periods of 10 minutes each shall be played. If the score still is tied, the game shall be recorded as a draw and the tiebreaker procedure of taking kicks from the penalty-kick line or spot, as set forth below, shall be used to determineadvancement. Exception: The winner of the penalty kicks during the national championship game only will be declared the winner for all purposes, including the record.
  14. I'll be there this morning. Since most of us have GA tickets, can those who get there earliest and in a group try to save room for additional Zips' fans so that we can try to sit together and be louder as a group? That would be awesome.
  15. I'll be there Friday and Sunday. Planning to leave Thursday right after work and get in at least 4 hours driving.
  16. I don't know if this posted before, but I found it interesting ("the Akron of Ohio Zips" )Interview with Teal Bunbury...
  17. A pointy ball field is 53 yards wide; a soccer field is at least 70 yards.yeah I played soccer my whole life, including quite a few games in football stadiums. There should be enough room on both sides of the field for the proper width. Is it possible? Yes. However, Id suspect it'd be a VERY tight fit in the corners of the field. I think that while it'd be great to do soccer on that field, soccer deserves to have its own dedicated facility. Plus, I think that having a dedicated facility for the two sports gives a "big time" feel to both programs. In the realm of FBS football, perception is everything. Having a dual purpose stadium wouldn't give us as good of a perception as we wish to attain. In soccer, natural grass is still the preferred surface. And btw, in the realm of FBS football, I'll take winning over perception any day.
  18. At Michigan this year, we had to sit behind a fence. Wasn't too bad, but it was along the length of the field, not behind the goal. Hopefully, the view won't be too bad, or UA can temporarily remove the fence (and not just the blue tarp) as I thought was stated on Gozips.com.
  19. well thats great. I was forced to get a SRO ticket last night because they told me they had sold out of everything else. From Gozips.com, it doesn't sound like your SRO ticket is SRO anymore...To make room for the additional seating, the fence on the west end of the stadium will be removed temporarily and bleachers will be installed. Moreover, to help compensate for what will likely be the team's fifth record-setting crowd of the season, all four gates will be accessible to fans. Once again, the will call table will be available at 2:30 p.m.Additional Tickets...
  20. Yup, you aren't close to the Hipshers at all.I am so close I am Dan's shadow. Dan Hipsher paved the road that the Zips are traveling down now. He gave the Zips the credability that they carry now. Thank You Dan where ever you are right now. Rumor is that he might come back and coach the Football team to a MAC East Title. Are yout a gumshoe Quick? Conf. Conf. Year Coach Record Pct. Maybe you have Dan Hipsher confused with Bob Huggins or Keith Dambrot when talking about coaches that have actually given Zips Basketball any sort of credibility in the Division I era? Or maybe you're just in love with Dan Hipsher? Either one is fine with me, but it's obvious that Dan Hipsher doesn't hold a candle to the things that Huggins and Dambrot have done for Akron Basketball. The numbers speak for themselves.Dambrot is the beneficiary of a weak MAC, when Hipsher was there every team seemed to have NBA talent. Now it seems as if Toledo, Cent Mich, Eastern, Can't, BGSU, are all teams that are struggling to compete in the MAC. Name me 5 players to play in NBA since Dambrot came to Akron and Hipsher left Akron. While Hipsher was there Casey Shaw Toledo, Chris Kaman Cent Mich, David Webber Cent Mich, Keith Mcleoud BGSU, Shawn Stonerook Ohio, Brandon Hunter Ohio, Wally Szerbiak Miami, Derrick Dials Eastern Mich, Anthony Stacey BGSU, Trevor Huffman Can't, Antonio Gates Can't State, Earl Boykins East Mich, Antonio Daniels BGSU, John Edwards Can't State, Ira Newbel Miami, Tamar Slay Marshall, Bonzi Wells Ball St, Theron Smith Ball St.. Seems to me Hipsher was coaching aginst way better talent. I realize some are not in NBA but all played on an NBA summer team in the last 4 years.OMG, it was FIFTEEN years of crap basketball after Huggins left before KD arrived. I thought it was only 14.
  21. Ouch. I think that's all that can be said.HANDS OFF OUR "DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI!" I know it's difficult to compete with one's alma mater (especially when they are a BCS school), but this is where The University of Akron needs to step up and take care of a GREAT coach it already has. I think the students, alumni, and the community are already showing Caleb (and team) all the love we can with the ever-increasing record crowds. The Zips are drawing more fans to the 2009 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament than any other team. I hope that anyone who can buys one of the SRO tickets behind the West Goal to increase the crowd size as much as possible.
  22. Channel 5 had a story on the Zips at approximately 6:15 pm tonight. Hopefully, the link below works to the video on the Newsnet5 website.Zips Men's Soccer Seeks National Title
