  1. Personally, I'm not really interested in a mock football game or a demonstration of the schemes we're using. I want to see the players who are competing for a spot on the 2-deep. I want to compare and contrast talent and skill levels. Thousands of people show up daily to watch the Cleveland Browns run basic drills in t-shirts during pre-season. A situational scrimmage like this will be infinitely more watchable.
  2. Good to start the season off with a win. They looked much improved from the pre-season exhibition matches.
  3. My best guess is a hyperextended knee. I know he left on crutches to go to the hospital at halftime, and did not put any weight on the injured leg. He was not wearing any medical equipment that I saw; no air cast or wrap or anything. They didn't even take his shoes off, and that's a good sign.
  4. Weird. I'm surprised the national blogs haven't taken the opportunity to make the obvious jokes.
  5. The game @ Creighton will be televised, if you live in Nebraska. It will be streamed online for free, too.
  6. Link.
  7. Isaiah Johnson visiting Akron on August 29th. He has picked up offers from Can't State, Xavier, and NKU, to go with his one from the Zips.
  8. That's a dick move if it's true. Just a few weeks before classes start, after all the coaching candidates have been hired by other schools. It's also a big step down to go from a D-I head coach (and MAC Coach of the Year) to a talent scout for a team that's in turmoil and probably years away from really competing. The timing is off. Usually when a coach leaves like this, it's because he knows some major bad news is coming and he's abandoning ship. I wonder if EMU will look at Zips assistant and EMU alum Charles Thomas as a replacement. I hope not. I like what coach Thomas is doing here.
  9. If you're adding the true and redshirt freshmen, then logically they should be the most numerous class. You have a full recruiting class plus half of last year's added together. 33 true+redshirt freshmen even seems a little low to me. The sophomore class is alarmingly low in numbers, and is a direct result of the exodus of players we've seen the past few years.
  10. There are benefits to practicing in the field house. The heat and humidity should make them better conditioned. Some schools don't even have one of them. But at the same time, if they move indoors every time it drizzles, they'll struggle terribly in the rain, cold, and snow that happens late in the year in MAC country.
  11. Starters look about right, at least for now. Still a ways to go, but if a player doesn't play himself on to the 2-deep by the end of next week, they better get used to the bench.
  12. The problem with most of the past marketing moves has been that a lack of commitment. Every time a successful move is made, it gets left to rot over the course of a few years, and is then scrapped when it becomes clear that actual effort is required to maintain it.
  13. Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, 2:00 means I'll have to miss it. Hopefully there's a decent turnout, though. never hurts to let the fans build a little bit of investment in the team by meeting the players and coaches.
  14. At the bottom of the GoZips.com article about the scrimmage today it was mentioned that the football team is holding a "meet the team" event Sunday at 2:00 in the field house. However, I've seen conflicting reports (from @AkronZipsFB_RC ) that it's actually supposed to take place in the morning. Anybody know what's up? http://gozips.com/sports/fball/2012-13/rel.../20120811eu65ds
  15. Is that a jab at Jim Christian? If so, I like the cut of your jib.
  16. First of all, there's a huge difference between trying out a career in baseball and in spending years recovering from multiple gunshot wounds. Turner spent two years at two JUCOs. Whether or not he actually saw the field, he was on the roster for one of the schools, and his NCAA eligibility clock started ticking. No big school can change that fact to give him more eligibility. If he sat at home that whole time it would be a different story, but it also might mean that he fell out of football shape.
  17. I'll bet he was. I'm sure he would have been out on the field if he could.
  18. It will be interesting to see the two-deep, even if it's not set in stone yet. Jamel Turner finally arriving is a very good sign. The LBs need all the help they can get.
  19. He has two years of eligibility, but would have to sit out one of those if he transferred to a FBS school.

  21. Good news about Hakeem Lawrence and DeAndre Scott. We need depth wherever we can get it.
