  1. Bottom line: Can't is paying for advertising in downtown Akron. UA is not. The only UA "billboard" that's up permanently (not on a video screen for 3 seconds and then replaced by a garden center ad) is the back of the baseball scoreboard facing McDonalds. When most people on ZN complain about marketing, they are complaining about basketball marketing in particular. It's nonexistent.
  2. Joe Akron has been trained to only go to the MAC games. Those games are the ones that get the most media mentions, and they have the most intense atmosphere. The ONLY way to change that is to bring in a "name" program that everyone in NE Ohio recognizes and wants to see. There are only two of them, and neither will be coming to the JAR under any circumstances, ever. Those two are Ohio State and Cleveland State. You can schedule the entire A-10 at home, you can bring in Memphis or any MWC team, the MVC, it doesn't matter. They're not interesting to the insular and ignorant masses.
  3. That'll happen once the "Akron's in Ohio" chants stop. The Canada stuff was started in response to that.
  4. It was a good win. Two wins in a double-header at the JAR is a great day.I hope that everyone is at the JAR on Wednesday. We're playing Can't State, and . I'm going to try bringing my laptop and watching the women's game and the free feed from Athens for the men's game at the same time.
  5. They are Division I athletes. The highest level of collegiate competition. If they can't handle it, then maybe they should transfer to a small D-III school where they're still coddled like they're in high school.
  6. A TV channel is expensive. I'd settle for a quality internet feed.
  7. http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/81076982.htmlThey still haven't finished the 1st and 2nd floors, though. I still wish they could find a way to put a restaurant somewhere on the 1st floor.Memorial Hall will definitely be torn down over the summer to make room for a new College of Education building. Lots of history that needs to be saved and transferred to the JAR, but it's all for the best.
  8. But you CAN'T watch it. Period. They don't broadcast the videoI know. I just think it's ridiculous for people to pay for that. It's more understandable if it was free i.e. "you get what you pay for".I would call the athletic office and ask them to cancel your subscription. If they get enough calls like that, they might do something about it. Complaining about it on an internet message board doesn't get anything done.
  9. Footballcoachscoop.com - Akron: Sources tell us that TJ Weist, former Western Kentucky Wide Receivers coach, interviewed with Head Coach Rob Ianello.
  10. The Ohio-Can't game was broadcast for free. The biggest problem that ZipsZone has is that it is a subscription-based service. That will never work for a team like Akron. Every basketball and football home game needs to be broadcast for free. Is there a fear that you will lose some attendance if people can instead watch the game on a 3-inch feed on a computer? There is no reason to charge for it. I think you'll gain a bigger audience by broadcasting it for free. It just makes sense to be free unless you have a big enough fan base to turn it into a real revenue source with a more professional production value, and Akron doesn't.
  11. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/2010010...otball+recruits I can't find any info on this kid.
  12. "The problem here is that 6-foot-8 center Micah Lio is out for the first part of the season with a hand injury."May be why some schools were holding off on recruiting him. Probably got hurt during football and it carried into the basketball season. And here's an article on him from August: http://aigafoundation.blogspot.com/2009/08...e-than-big.htmlHe was receiving attention from Pitt, Indiana, Purdue, and Michigan State."Lio bears a full black beard and a Mohawk haircut reminiscent of 1980s icon Mr. T." Nice!
  13. Well, we have a highly regarded offensive line coach that can coach him. The trenches are the place where the MAC sees the biggest discrepancy in talent from the BCS schools. He's already got the size and the strength to do well in the MAC. If we can get him the technique and a bit of speed he could become a great player.
  14. For some universities, the most difficult part of getting your degree is being accepted into the university in the first place.
  15. Yes!!! Congratulations Teal!
  16. Well hopefully the coaching talent can win over some players.I'd rather they win games than players. Every press release about our new coaches has a quote from Ianello about how the position coach or the coordinator is a great recruiter, but I don't see mentions of them being good coaches. When you win games, you don't need to be an amazing recruiter because the talent will be drawn to you. We have enough talent to win the MAC already. That should be the main focus.
  17. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htmFor the 07-08 year (last year in the Rubber Bowl). $227,163.00 was spent on marketing. We had the highest recruiting budget in the MAC, by far:MAC WESTEMU - 599KToledo - 456KCMU - 400KNIU - 323KWMU - 287KBall State - 176KMAC EASTAkron - 739KBuffalo - 504K BGSU - 378KOhio - 374KCan't - 372KTemple - did not reportWe earned a grand total $0 in TV money. So much for the MAC TV contract. It will be interesting to see how the new stadium changes the revenue stream. The MAC payouts are under $1 million. That's the biggest difference between the MAC teams and the BCS teams.
  18. We have two academic all-americans on the team. Sarkodie and Zemanski are eligible for significant merit-based scholarship money because of their GPAs.I think it's perfectly legal for a school to award merit-based academic scholarships to athletes. It actively encourages coaches to seek out smart athletes who can earn their scholarships in the classroom so they don't have to use up their athletic scholarships. As for Akron "gaming the system" because of the admission requirements, it's complete BS. Just because somebody is eligible to take classes doesn't mean that they'll be able to pass them. Admissions have nothign to do with how tough the academic courses are. Besides, in order to be eligible for the real big scholarships you need to be accepted into a degree-granting college and they do have higher criteria than the overall university.
  19. According to midmajority.com, the MVC schools spend an average of $2.1 million per year on basketball while the MAC schools spend an average of just $1.4 million despite having a much larger overall athletic budget.Nothing the conference office can do will change individual school budgets on a sport. It takes a collective effort to raise the quality of MAC basketball, and the will to change it just isn't there for some of the university presidents.
  20. Jackson has just been announced as the D-Line coach.
  21. Brandon Anderson signs with the Bucs for 2010
  22. Some uninteresting team: 17Another uninteresting team: 26
  23. David Meves and Zarek Valentin were named First Team All-Freshmen by College Soccer News and Chad Barson was named to the Second Team.
  24. Some of the URI fans are counting on a link for a TV feed of the game to be posted on here. To that I say: good luck . We're in the MAC, and in case you haven't heard, the MAC sucks. No video feed for you. If you're desperate enough to pony up for the paid service on gozips.com, well, good luck watching that thing.
