  1. Support for coach Peters Tonight

The first 3,000 fans will get a purple T-shirt with '4 Pete's Sake' on it in support of coach Dan Peters.

    Zips are a 14 point favorite. eating-cake.gif

EA of the PD writes about UA

Coach Keith Dambrot's Zips are already playing at a relatively high level, every night, and like Can't State have made some lineup changes with Carmelo Betancourt at point guard, Jake Kretzer at forward, Quincy Diggs now starting at guard, Nick Harney at forward and Demetrius Treadwell at center. This lineup has produced two straight road wins. Overall, while Toledo gets the MAC spotlight courtesy of its victory at Akron, the Zips are in better shape to win or share a third MAC title. Akron already has four MAC road wins, including at Ohio University and at Eastern Michigan. UT has only played two MAC road games to date, and split those. After the Zips play at Can't State, 6 p.m. Saturday, they will only have four MAC road games remaining with a Feb. 19 game at Buffalo being the most daunting. UT still has seven MAC road games, including at OU, at Eastern and at rival Bowling Green. As Treadwell said after a Tuesday practice, "I like where we are right now, and where we'll be by the end of the season."

  2. The problem with the minutes discussions include but are not limited to the fact that box scores can provide limited information of value. Either watch the game and gain observational/contextual data or employ some more sophisticated analytics. The constant and incessant box score rehash stinks. More information is needed and the binary win/loss game output data provides only a rudimentary and noisy read on how well the team is optimized.
    Well said.
  3. The one thing soccer does well is get butts in the seats at their matches - in attendance figures per game they rank 3rd in the US - under the NFL and MLB, but above the NHL and NBA.
Have you seen NHL or NBA ticket prices lately? I can't justify buying a ticket to watch the Pens, even if I could get one. Sellout Streak Over 300

PS I was a little surprised by the amount of NY/Bos/LA fans making up the 14%. This will continue to decline if that league doesn't change.

  4. EA of the PD

As for Akron (13-6, 5-1), one week ago there was angst over its double-digit loss to the Toledo Rockets. But the Zips rebounded with a pair of road wins -- four road wins overall in league play -- which is something no other league team has. While UT has the tiebreaker edge over the Zips right now, the Rockets have yet to play at Ohio University or at Eastern Michigan, two tough spots where Akron already has road wins.

A lineup change for Akron with Quincy Diggs, Jake Kretzer, Nick Harney and Carmelo Betancourt now starting, seems to have settled the Zips, somewhat, even as turnovers and free throw shooting remain an issue. But the Zips play five of their final seven at home, putting pressure on Toledo not to stumble on the road, and hand the MAC lead back to Akron.

  5. The NFL. I know for a fact that at least Heinz field does "butts in seats."
Correct. The Pittsburgh sports media is very interested in how many people are actually at an event (Steelers/Pens/Bucks). The media also does a great job following tv ratings for sporting events, and where Pittsburgh, and other cities, rate in the market. I remember reading that Pittsburgh was the city with the highest TV rating for the Winter Classic. That surprised me a little.

    Attendance example

Another note: Rooney is discussing lowering preseason ticket prices, and raising premier games (Ravens). Like they do in college football already. I would guess this catches on throughout the $nfl$.

  6. CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR ALAN ARRINGTON

Thursday at 5 p.m. on the fifth floor of InfoCision Stadium for a Memorial and Celebration of Life for Football Assistant Head Coach Alan "Tank" Arrington, who passed away in December following an automobile accident in Mississippi. This will provide an opportunity for those student-athletes, department staff and those within the Akron community who were unable to attend his funeral in Mississippi last month to have an opportunity to remember him and pay their respects. Tank was one of the most outgoing and enthusiastic people I have ever known, and that will be the theme of next week's tribute. Please join us if you can.

  7. The press conference, held on the Press Level (7th floor) of InfoCision Stadium, is open to the public. If you were a Football season ticketholder in 2013 and attend the press conference, we will provide you complimentary tickets to our Men's Basketball game against Eastern Michigan that night at 7. You will be eligible for one basketball ticket for each football ticket assigned to your account.

  8. The Zips made the list TWICE. The win over UT is #82 and the close loss in the "Big House" is at #17.
Nice find Johnny, happy I was at both games. It's nice to have football back in Akron. Ianello had me so distraught, I was starting to search for good football outside of Zips football. Now, thanks to coach Bowden I have my cake, and can eat it too. Here's to hoping Akron/Pitt and Akron/PSU are on the list next year. :thumb:
  9. Actually, yes
If you are tweeting a recruit, you're committing an NCAA violation

“Fans cannot contact a recruit and attempt to entice them to attend a certain school, as this is a violation of NCAA rules,” read Woodley’s statement. “If a school comes across an instance of this happening, it is expected they would reach out to those athletics personnel, fans and boosters and reinforce the ground rules related to communicating with recruits. This communication outreach would most likely be reported to the NCAA, which would show the school is doing their due diligence to abide by the NCAA rules.”
