  1. ... inadvertent minor violation of an obscure legal technicality, that would be a lot different from deliberately thumbing your nose at the law
Lacking detail, but this tidbit is found here: Any hope of an Abreu comeback in Akron went up in smoke when he was arrested in July for an unspecified probation violation. He spent two days in the Summit County Jail before being released.
  2. Defense Still Wins Championships

Top 25 Scoring Defenses Since 2002, Reaching Super Bowl

Let's take a quick run through the Super Bowl teams featuring defenses ranking among the top 25 in points allowed among all teams since 2002.

    1. 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: They upset the high-scoring Raiders.

    4. 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers: They beat the Cardinals.

    7. 2013 Seattle Seahawks: They will play Manning's Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

    8. 2010 Pittsburgh Steelers: This Steelers team lost its Super Bowl matchup against the Green Bay Packers. That Packers offense featured Aaron Rodgers, but it ranked only 115th in points scored since 2002. Rodgers' presence raised the ceiling in a one-game situation.

    12. 2003 New England Patriots: These Patriots won an unexpected shootout against the Carolina Panthers. Both teams had been much better on defense than on offense, but it didn't show in the game.

    13. 2010 Green Bay Packers: The Packers have been known for offense with Rodgers, but this Super Bowl-winning team ranked much higher in defensive scoring.

    21. 2006 Chicago Bears: Manning's lone Super Bowl victory to this point came at the Bears' expense.

    22. 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers: They beat the Seahawks.

T-25. 2004 New England Patriots: These Patriots allowed 260 points, same as the NFC champion Eagles allowed. New England won it all, of course.

    T-25. 2004 Philadelphia Eagles:

Top 25 Scoring Offenses Since 2002

We now take a quick run through the Super Bowl teams featuring offenses ranking among the top 25 in points allowed among all teams since 2002.

    1. 2013 Denver Broncos: They're in Super Bowl XLVIII after setting an NFL record with 606 points.

    2. 2007 New England Patriots: These were the 16-0 Patriots, who were heavily favored against a New York Giants team whose defense ranked 216th in scoring out of the 384 defenses since 2002. Those Giants had a deep rotation along their defensive front; so do the current Seahawks.

    8. 2011 New England Patriots: This Patriots team lost to the Giants once again. This Giants defense ranked 315th in scoring since 2002, but it held New England to 17 points.

    9. 2009 New Orleans Saints: This team won it all at the expense of Manning's Colts. Both offenses were stronger than the corresponding defenses, but the Saints' offense ranked highest by a wide margin.

    22. 2005 Seattle Seahawks: They lost to the Steelers.

    23. 2002 Oakland Raiders: They lost to the Bucs.

  3. I want Peyton Manning to throw a last second TD over Richard Sherman for the win and then see the post game interview.
That will be a pretty tall order. Since entering the league Sherman leads it in picks, passes defended, and QB's have the lowest rating when targeting him. If Manning goes his way with those wobbly passes he was throwing against NE, it will be six the other way. I don't expect Manning to challenge him downfield. LOB.

For those confused by Sherman's ridiculous antics after the play.

Here is the backstory to Sherman vs Crabtree While there, Sherman went to shake Crabtree's hand, and Crabtree tried to start a fight.

Hate Sherman's rant? It's got nothing on Belichick!

  4. 22 Brief Thoughts About That Richard Sherman Interview

    8. If you stick a microphone in a football player’s face seconds after he made a huge play to send his team to the Super Bowl, you shouldn’t be surprised if he’s a little amped up.

    9. Ninety-nine percent of on-field interviews are boring and useless. The TV networks do them anyway for the 1 percent of the time they get a moment like Richard Sherman.

    10. As a reporter and writer, that raw emotion — whatever form it takes — is exactly what I hope for. That’s why media people fight for access to locker rooms. After players and coaches cool off, most of them turn into Crash Davis, reading from the book of cliches.

    11. But we — the media, and fans in general — don’t know what we want. We rip athletes for giving us boring quotes. But if they say what they actually feel, we rip them for spouting off or showing a lack of class

One of the best post game interviews EVER! LOB is coming Peyton.

  5. Denver took apart NE yesterday with machine like precision and they are on a roll. I think their offensive line is going to make the difference in the game and they win in a relatively low scoring game.
Denver taking apart NE defense was no surprise, the Browns took them apart a month ago. What I am surprised by, is that Belichick didn't blitz Manning? I will bet Seattle defends differently. BTW Belichick still hasn't won a thing since being fined for cheating, but he doesn't like it when it happens to him.

Although I like a lot of what the 49'ers do, I'm happy I don't have to watch this bafoon.

  6. Nice article.

If AA is truly sorry, and issued a real apology to fans for his wrong doing, I have no problem with him getting a second chance. I hope he is truly sorry, and is trying to get his life on track. Sometimes it takes something drastic to get your life in order. I know it's not apples to apples, but the Chris Carter story comes to mind. He would have to be mentally tough in road games.

Weatherspoon scored 20 yesterday for Toledo, if he were in an Akron uniform yesterday what do you think his point total would have been?

  7. Pretty scary when we can give up 75 points to Toledo with Pearson scoring only 6 points. But his flying dunk late in the game was unbelievable.
Reminiscent of some of Jimmal Ball's work. I don't blame any fans, but a lot of them left and missed it since it was in "garbage" time. It was interesting to see how his game changed now that he has a team around him.

I agree about the beating, but not the details. Many of those rebounds today were not clean rebounds, but were loose balls that were slapped around, and they beat us to many of them. I don't want to pick on Pat, but there was one particular instance where he took a couple of lazy steps and reached out for a loose rebound in some clear space, and a Toledo player simply ran in front of him and took it away. It was that kind of day.
A few of those rebounds, the Zips had descent position under the hoop and the rebound became long enough it was just out of their reach. Doesn't change the fact that they were outworked on most, but I did make that comment in the first half.

I guess another question. Of all the MAC teams that went deep (for us, that would mean winning a game) into the ncaa tournament, how many of them really were using 10 different guys on a regular basis? If my memory is correct, most of them threw their stars on the floor and lived and died with them for as many minutes as possible. Toledo might just do the same thing this year.
While I agree with the theory, I don't have the vision as some do for the big Toledo NCAA run. I do enjoy their style, they are players that are comfortable what the guy next to them is going to do. Nothing against Tree (my favorite player on the team), CB drove the lane and dished up a nice alley oop, but Tree wasn't on the same page. Just not the same familiarity.

My favorite move of Trees wasn't on court yesterday. He was working his butt off, KD pulled him to give him a break, Tree sat down for about 20 seconds and went over to KD and told him he was good to go. He worked hard yesterday.

PS I caught a few Zips Nation members through my lens across the court who used to post thoughtful critics without agendas. I miss reading those posts. :(

  8. If Akron uses the formula they did today, they don't match up well with Toledo. I hope Akron avoids Toledo in the MAC tourney because I don't see us changing our game plan. You know the old saying about the QB gets too much credit, and too much blame? I think the PG position gets too much blame on this team. There are multiple things not clicking right now, the point guard position is just one of them. I think the position is what it is, now you must adjust your game plan because of it, not run the same ol' same ol' despite it. I'm not trying to take credit away from Toledo, they played well and deserved to win. They wanted the game, and out hustled us.
