His reasoning:UT's entire starting five averages double figures. It has an elite point guard in Julius Brown (13.4 points) who averages 7.2 assists, double what Akron's top two guards had combined. And it has an elite power forward in J.D. Weatherspoon (11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds) to counter Akron's leading scorer and rebounder, Demetrius Treadwell (13.2/ 7.8). It's a contrast in styles for UT and Akron....But where Toledo seems well oiled, scoring 84.2 points a game and shooting 48.6 percent from the floor, the Zips struggle just to make it to the final buzzer on top.Poor decisions inside the final four minutes and suspect foul shooting make every game a nail-biter for Akron."We have to win until we clean these problems up,'' head coach Keith Dambrot said. "It is what it is right now. Eventually we can't make those mistakes. It's going to bite us." And Toledo has the teeth to do it.Sounds like they go with the theory of starting their best players. Some think it's better to finish with your best.FYIa team coming off of probation with a 2-1 start should somehow be more highly regarded then us if they win this 1 basketball game?.@TheAKROWDIES & @uakron students - FREE donuts (300), FREE lunch (400), and a chance to win @beatsbydre (1,000) at #ZipsGameday tomorrow!

Ellen gives Zips something for their bulletin board
"Toledo (14-2, 2-1) plays at Akron (11-5, 3-0), 11 a.m. Saturday on ESPNU, in what could be the passing of the torch in the Mid-American Conference."
Can someone tweet this to Tree?

I forwarded the article to rianello@ku.edu, let's see if he agrees. I'll let you know.We are probably a bottom 16 team over that period as the Ianello years would destroy any average, but we aren't a bottom two. -
You beat me to it CK. I can almost envision the headline in the Columbus paper...Tressel to Michigan.
From the comments under CK's link, it doesn't seem like Lion fans are going to welcome this with open arms.
I wonder if the front office is waiting to see what initial fan reaction is before giving the approval.
Pending approval? CBSsports.com
Full ESPN insider article found here.
New Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell is in the process of putting together a staff that can take a talented team to a championship. One of the first names that popped up to have a significant role on Caldwell's staff was former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, a colleague of Caldwell's during the one year they were together in Indianapolis. There's even talk that a deal with Tressel is already in place, with only approval from the front office remaining, though that is unconfirmed. Tressel is currently in a leadership position at the University of Akron but one would think he'd jump without hesitation for a chance to coach in the NFL, especially because he is temporarily banned from coaching in the NCAA because of a show cause penalty. Tressel worked as a replay-review consultant under Caldwell with the Colts in 2011.
I never thought that a replay review consultant on your resume would pay off so big!?!

Nice headline. I was going to go with 'Zips Get a Few Crumbs on Court, But Avoid Choking on Cupcake'Bentacourt....only playing out of control once or twice. He also had a nice rebound. -
You are correct, here are the details. Maybe this guy will be there.I believe this is the LBJ Family Foundation game. Last year, that game was Buffalo and had an attendance of 5,403. The game previous? Ball State had an attendance of only 3,169. I would think we are seeing a huge spike in ticket sales because of this partnership.Possibly LeBron's coach/Mike Polk will be there?

Zeke and number one pick overall playing in same league?
In a season that many would grade an "F," Anthony Bennett could soon earn a "D." Even before he didn't play a minute in a 120-118 victory over the Lakers on Tuesday night, [bennett] was being asked whether he'd be interested in going down to play with the Cavaliers' owned-and-operated NBA Development League franchise in Canton. "It's something I'd think about, for sure," Bennett said before Tuesday's game. "It's not a bad thing, especially going down there, hopefully playing a lot, going out there, building my confidence."

I was pleasantly surprised at the Marshall game. The fact that there was a snow storm, no band, no class, and it was still a nice crowd. If Brad is responsible, nice job!I think you can thank Brad Swanson for the increased attendance. His aggressive marketing campaigns the last 2 years (#zipsmensbasketball and BacktheZips) plus the increased outreach to the student body are paying dividends. Anyone who has been to a home game this season can attest to the fact that attendance is clearly up. Not just phantom tickets sold to groups at a discount who never show up(football) but actual butts in the seats. His use of social media is really working. -

Winner!
Great find Hip. Makes me glad I didn't do this the day they had it before a football game. No WAY I could compete with that!

Jay Bilas has Toledo ranked #68.
Toledo has a top-10 offense in KenPom.com but a defense rated outside the top 250. Toledo's schedule has not helped the cause, with only one win against a team rated in the top 100. This is a good team, but it has to do well in MAC play to garner some national acclaim.

Looking forward to see how the Zips defend Rian.

The Zips were called for it in the Marshall game.He probably was, but the refs look the other way on that infraction nowadays. The game has changed and the OU fans need to find something else to complain about. -
Two of my favorite things in life are sports and art. I really enjoy when the two combine with each other.
I was wondering if there were other fans that would like to start a thread. Feel free to include pertinent links below.
One of my favorite photographers just posted his images of the year here. For those of you that live in the area Scott had some stuff at the football HOF the last time I went.

If one had to write a prescription to help this team last week, it might read "2OT win in Athens"
Hopefully this team uses that momentum to start playing some good basketball for the next two plus months.
PS Just wondering, did any ZN member not guess the play at the end of regulation during the timeout? If you didn't, subtract one from your total score.
"The low block is the answer for us,'' Dambrot said.

BG 14th, OU 15th, and UB 16th. Longwood (whoever that is) is 10th.

Tressel isn't at Akron to be 'an ornament'
As of last week, the university said it had received 48% more freshman applications than it had at this point last year.
Dr. Proenza tried to hire him as the University of Akron's next football coach, though Mr. Tressel was more interested in the academic side of the house.
To boost that number, Mr. Tressel began recruiting so-called “encouragers” to assist the university's advising team in aggressively reaching out to at-risk students. At present, the university has about 18 encouragers and plans to add five more this semester. He launched similar programs while coaching at Youngstown State and Ohio State. At the same time, he has helped recruit more than 700 people for the Roo Crew, a group designed to connect alumni and others in the university community with students to help with job placement.
No mention of funds for a basketball arena. Disappointed the question wasn't asked.
Mary Kay Cabot (one of the best in the biz) writes James Patrick is too old to be the Browns coach.

Draft Insider Tony Pauline writes that UCF QB Blake Bortles is a "clear-cut favorite" to be the Texans' pick at No. 1 overall.
Pauline believes Texans owner Bob McNair prefers Johnny Manziel, but Bortles is a "Bill O'Brien type of passer," and Houston seems likely to lock in on signal callers with the draft's top pick. Bortles has drawn media comparisons ranging from Jake Locker to Andrew Luck. In his latest mock draft, Pauline pencils in Bortles at No. 1, and Texas A&M LT Jake Matthews at No. 2 to St. Louis.

South Carolina vs Florida I'm pretty sure some ZN member predicted this.
KP rates South Carolina 111, Akron-135, Marshall-218, Ball St.-285, OU-81, HippyU-162. Toledo is highest rated MAC team at 79.

Impressive! Thanks for taking the time. You should do one (pattern) with the last 10 years of the Zips basketball ATS (if you can find the data). Make one category, when we are five point underdogs or more.Yes I created it. My methodology was quite simple...look for patterns, and predict the schedule based upon patterns. 2012 prediction was 100% accurate, this year was 80%, because I got one wrong.I'm probably in the minority, but Miami, EMU, and UMass at home do not excite me. BG does! If it gets us to a bowl, great!

Thanks for posting. Good interview..."It will be an interesting time in the next few weeks, I wouldn't count anything out" -James Patrick
He reminds me of a politician the way he answers questions. I hope he gets the job he desires, as long as it isn't in western PA.

I wish I knew about THIS before the game. A couple of my friends watched and said they liked it. I would have turned to anything not to hear Dustburger say "just get us to the fourth quarter" one more time.
I thought I heard this but a lot was going on around me when it happened. I think the time has come.

Zeke was a minus four while on the floor yesterday (per my above link). His efficiency rating, which started in the negative range, is now up to +5.08. That's important because it means the Red Claws are performing better than their opponents when Zeke is in the game. That means he's likely to get more playing time, which will give him more experience and opportunity to improve. -
On one side of the court, offensively, like I stated above, we play too far away from the rim. See my above post for solution.Once again the Zips were outrebounded. What's this all about?

The Blade: Styles Differ
“We’re a better transition team,” (point guard Julius) Brown said. “They’re a little tougher team, if you ask me, as far as rebounding and things like that.”
“Unless we play physical, we can’t beat anybody,” Dambrot said.
I'm always interested in how we scheme to get points. Hope we have a plan, and it is not dribbling/passing the shot clock down to minimize Toledo's possessions.
