I was of the opinion that Manny was an a-hole for holding up construction of the stadium... but frankly its a smart business move. Your cheap suburban akron property suddenly becomes massively valuable because the University wants it to expand its campus. If any of us were in their positions, we'd all be milking as much as we could from the platter UA is serving up.

Making it to the NCAA tourney is an accomplishment in itself. If we did it with an at-large bid, that'd be equally, if not more impressive than winning the AQ bid. That said, its been the team's goal for some time to make a run in the tourney... and I would not expect them to strive for any less than that. Are we proud of what we've done? Yes. Are we satisfied? No. Thats the difference between where we are and where we want to be.

Multiply that times two for women's basketball games... Plus if we host local basketball games... plus if you add in entertainment events (concerts, comedy tours, etc)... plus conventions or other large-space events... youd be wise to multiply that number by at least 3 or 4 if you want to truly represent the number of times the facility could be used yearly. Akron's hockey team is still a club team. Its not a team backed by the Athletic Department. There's absolutely zero reason for the university to build a new arena to accommodate a team they have no responsibility for.

During the spring months, that practice field between the soccer stadium and Schrank halls gets CONTINUOUS use. I've seen it be used by Mens Soccer, Womens Soccer, baseball conitioning, some intermittent football (though theyre mostly using the field house and stadium now), in addition to intramural sports like flag football and the like. There are many days the lights dont shut off till well into the late night because they are still using it. That said, I stand by my thought that the University is either building the new arena where the baseball field is currently at or across the street from canal park. Both are great locations for an arena. I would bet more on the baseball field location though... Either way... I definitely foresee some news coming out in the next year. Should be interesting for sure... I just hope the university doesnt try to polish a turd in trying to make the JAR something its not.

This was one difficult bracket to fill out. I dont have much confidence in the top seeds and there are a lot of potential upsets out there. I went slightly more chalk than I was intending to go, but thats how the matchups fell. And yes, I have the Zips going to the Sweet 16. Might as well make them my cinderella, right?

Butler and Xavier leaving A10...opportunity?
tbozeglav replied to ditchrider1's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Just... no. This would bring down all other sports aside from basketball. Stay where we are... build a winner here. Short-sighted moves like these will hurt more than they help. -
Im just sayin I dont want to have to mingle with the brocean halfway through the game
-
Not entirely thrilled about that one, especially with it being a thursday night and knowing how rowdy that area gets later into the night.

Especially for a mid major.

Filled it out. And of course repeated the need for a better basketball arena

Love the design! Definitely a fan of a sort of "split" design wherein theres an upper section. Provides the additional seating we need for those big games, but is still intimate and close to the action. My only wonder with it is the lower bowl - how far down vertically is that design from an estimated "ground" level? Im sure there are concerns here in regards to cost for excavating that the university would look to avoid, in addition to whatever geography issues may arise from where our campus is. just food for thought

Just saw this too.... awesome

that might be the dumbest thing I've heard someone say. Not like the University hasn't dealt with players getting in trouble like this before... Let alone Coach D.

To this point... There are a lot more than 20 dates per year to amortize the cost, you just have to consider the possibilities beyond strictly men's basketball events. Women's basketball could very well begin to sell suites if their success continues. Concerts could easily be held there (as they rightfully should purely from a student entertainment standpoint) and suites WILL sell for that. Might even be able to tap into the local highschool basketball matchups which could potentially sell some suites. Point is not what events will exactly sell a suite... the point is that there are a lot of event opportunities, should the university seize them to their fullest, where revenue from a suite could be garnered. There ARE people out there will pay more for a "luxury" experience at a game, concert, etc... the university would be fools to not afford themselves the opportunity to open that revenue stream.

The only major appreciable downside to these new housing buildings is their price. When I lived south of campus with my friends, it only cost us $300 each per month for rent (there were 3 of us). For a college kid who's making barely over minimum wage working 30 hours a week, thats REALLY affordable. These new buildings are charging something like $900 PER tenant PER month. That isnt cheap, even if youre putting those costs on your student loans Granted, the current south campus housing is... well... crap, and these new places are awesome by comparison to even my current apartment, its costing the students a LOT more to live there... and there's still something to be said about affordable off-campus housing.

I have a friend who works for 22 Exchange/401 lofts and itd appear those places are in high-demand. With this facility being as close to campus as it will be, Id be amazed if it didnt fill up.
-
This is definitely the right kind of development Exchange street needs. Find a way to put a new basketball Area right with it and that will become an awesome new stretch of campus

Didnt even look sold out to me! Great win by the zips. If I see him in class tomorrow, Ill be sure to give Zeke some words of encouragement for another solid game even though he fouled out.
-
Honestly, I believe keeping with the current design of a glass/steel/brick design similar to the Student Union, Infocision Stadium, or the new dorms would look best.
-
There's still plenty of room for a decently sized arena between that building and the buildings down at the corner of Exchange and Main st. Just saying...
-
figured Id revive this thread... Im on PennStation's email list and got a notification that the one on Exchange (next to the McD's, across from the new parking deck) is temporarily closing for construction... with this, plus the bookstore being gone, the ghetto phone store gone, and Miracle trophy posting that they've moved, it'd seem as though the plan is moving forward to get something built on that block.

Id venture to say that since Frenchy is the zips color commentator, that gives him the right to be a homer. He's there as a zips broadcaster. If you want to hear a neutral commentary, then look elsewhere. All that said, I love frenchy. I concur he's second behind Tom Hamilton and lately slightly ahead of Jim Donovan. He does a real good broadcast, even if he's not perfect.

Zips black uniforms will be made available
tbozeglav replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
thats not cheap at all. Knocks me out of interested people. cant afford to drop that much into a jersey... most authentic NFL jerseys arent even that much... -
Good move by the OU administration. Those students really understood the peril of the situation and made sure they kept themselves safe... http://totalfratmove.com/1140878#hkE7j4TZD0ayt484.02
