Those are frat and sorority houses.

You know... I was thinking about this for some time. If they were to build a new arena in the core of the campus, where would they even put it? The footprint of the JAR is hardly big enough to hold a modern-scale arena, even if it was only a 10k capacity. Youd need at the very least 2 blocks of real estate to build an arena. Where in or very near the core of campus is there room for that?I think the University's hands are tied on this one. We all know theyd like to upgrade the facility especially with the rise of our BBall team. The problem is the location. Either they'd have to tear down the JAR (and possibly have to relocate the frats and sororities that are next door) or they build it elsewhere, namely nextdoor to canal park. Theres just no room anywhere else in the core of campus to build a modern arena that has a capacity of about 10k.

Let's put this into perspective a little. Take the Q for example. That arena has been able to host basketball, arena football, hockey, monster truck rallies, concerts... the list goes on. In my experience seeing a lot of basketball games there, never once did I ever feel there was a really "bad" seat. Hell, even when the alumni dept sponsored a bus trip to cleveland for the home opener for the Cavs last year, we all had seats in about the highest up part of the arena and even then I didn't feel THAT far away from the action. There really aren't any major compromises to be made with a multi-purpose arena.

Requesting Some Help from ZipsNation

Im currently considering 22exchange, even at its price. I did a breakdown of the entire value of all amenities of the apartments there and dollar-to-dollar, plus considering intangible values, its actually not too bad of a price. For me to live on my own at, for example, Highland Square and have comparable amenities, it'd cost me roughly $1000/mo ($500/mo if I get someone to live with me)For me to live with at least 1 other friend at 22Exchange, it'd cost me no more than $735/mo and is not dependent on my roommate paying his share every month (each resident pays their share individually) -

A great idea, yes.... if I had about 3 other people who wanted to get one together. Buying a house by yourself is just stupidI have given thought to Highland Square. Thanks for the tip. I may call them and see if they have anything available that will work for me. -

From what I have been told by friends also looking for apartments, that place is booked solid... -
I am desperately trying to find an apartment for at least the next year down in Akron. I have decided I no longer want to live in a dorm (and might not be able to based on how many credits I may be taking next fall) and want to move to a place on my own. I was going to live with my current roommates, but that fell through as have plans to live with a friend down here. I have been trying to find a way to add another class to my schedule to at least give me the option of living on campus (I desperately do not want to do this again), but there's really no options out there for me.I really don't have much as far as requirements, but here they are: Rent under $500-$600/moAs close to the UA campus as possibleAir conditioningWould like an indoor garage for the carCable/High Speed internet a mustLocated in at least a decent neighborhood (I have many highly-valuable electronics to keep safe)Move in before the start of the Fall 09 semester (obviously)I'm sure there are things I am forgetting, but let me know of any places I can check out. Thanks!

Students wonder why Akron never gets any good concerts to come to campus... when you have the JAR and EJT as the only places you could even POSSIBLY hold one, it doesnt look appealing to the artists.Arena would help the City and the University in so many ways its unbelievable. The problem is in this economy, the opposition would be just too great to do something like that right now. Unless there would be a plan to make the facility a constant benefit to the ENTIRE community, it just wouldn't fly right now.

Friday night games, like others have mentioned, are just as successful as a Saturday game. The only possible issue with Friday night games is High School football. I could be wrong, but those Fridays are going to be right in the middle of the late-season games and possibly the playoffs, so attendance might go down slightly. That said, Fridays have always shown to be successful for High schools (attendance-wise), so we should fare well with those games.

I really like this schedule. Friday games are MUCH better than Wednesday games, so I am pleased. Especially because I don't have class on Fridays this fall :DI cant really complain about this schedule at all. Best schedule we've had in the last 3 years, IMO

Spring Game On-Campus Tailgating Kickoff
tbozeglav replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Ohhhhhhhh i see what you mean. See, to me tailgating more often than not involves mass amounts of cars/trucks with pop-up tents and grills everywhere. In that case, I could definite see the University opening it up for some greenspace for people to have fun in during pre-game. Are there any laws that prohibit any kind of tailgating on the top levels of parking decks? -

thatd work, except you wouldnt be able to get any cars out there. University would NEVER allow cars to drive on natural turf... and if its wet... that field would need so much repair it wouldnt be funny -
Spring Game On-Campus Tailgating Kickoff
tbozeglav replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Last I had heard that was where it'd be... which is kinda dumb if you ask me because there are still quite a few surface lots around campus that can host tailgating just fine (namely the surface lot south the Schrank) -
thats a good point. I wonder if they'll still use the Indiana game as the big party for the opening of the stadium, but that might be a little awkward if there already was a game there the week before...

hate to burst your bubble/rain on your parade/step on your foot, but it was already announced on the last page... its all good though

I too share the feelings that I would MUCH rather have opened the new lady against a Big10 team. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too

noticed they are putting in the blue bleacher backings on the east upper stands (think the blue on the bleachers at the soccer field)
-
Not sure who messed up here. I coped the quote from the website, so I think they FUBARed who actually said it.In regards to the past tailgating... never once did i say what we had at the RB was legit tailgating. I was merely saying that they keep saying we will finally have it yet we keep hearing rumors about them restricting tailgating to some location thats not even a parking lot.
-
Thats some great stuff!! I love the views that they showed from on top of the pressbox overlooking the field and the campus. Major PR for the University! One thing that intrigued me about the segment was this quote: "We will for the first time have authentic collegiate tailgating activities going on before and after the game," said Mack Rhoades, Athletic Director. That being said and considering the "rumors" of where tailgating will ACTUALLY be, I wonder if this is just a smoke screen to making it seem like it will or there are actual plans being made to open up tailgating to other areas around the stadium...I also liked the HUGELY outdated b-roll of game footage...

more than likely it's Tyvek (http://www2.dupont.com/Tyvek/en_US/index.html). From the website: "One of the most popular applications of Tyvek® is in the construction industry. It is used to increase air and water resistance, and provides better protection against water and moisture intrusion."

Is it me or does it look like they are already putting the bleachers in on the west lower stands? I could be wrong, but it sure does look like it.

Stadium Mock-up from Osborne Design
tbozeglav replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
A bit excessive, IMO, but still would be amazing to have built -
Edward's excuse for not liking cleveland because he's ax ex-wolverine is the biggest load of BS I've ever heard. The only reason why everyone hates him right now is because he couldn't catch the dang ball when it was thrown to him RIGHT IN THE NUMBERS. Nobody in cleveland really cares that much that he was a Wolverine at UM. Sure, they'll make mention of it, but if he'd actually play like he's being paid to, then people wouldn't be calling him out.

Stadium Mock-up from Osborne Design
tbozeglav replied to Z.I.P.'s topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
One thing Id like to point out about a few of those links is that many soccer "stadiums" are also multi-purpose in that they hold track and field events as well, whereas we're looking at a soccer only facility. -
Drove by the stadium today and saw something very beautiful....Manny's and that Chop Stix place next door vacant, boarded up, and construction fencing enclosing the area...
