Maybe, but we set minor league baseball attendance records.Just gotta win once in awhile, put on a good show for families, advertise. Fans will start coming.
-
Not basketball. When you lose to Sienna, and CSU goes rounds, NOT!!!Baseball maybe...What we REALLY need right now is for the Nati to beat the crap out of Purdon't and then they will shut up the Worthless Nuts for good.

Janey, don't you lose heart. It's easy to get blinded by the light. We're headed for better days. Cincy is living proof what a human touch can do in a lucky town. There may be darkness on the edge of town, but still there's reason to believe. We just need the no surrender, tougher than the rest attitude. Point blank. We need a local hero to step up. They'll be racing in the street to get to my hometown for the rising. It'll be magic. I'm just waitin' on a sunny day. We shall overcome.

Seriously???It's not some video maker at another college that's making this team look bad...

To practice on the natural turf at the soccer stadium would put a lot of wear and tear on it. It's tough enough to keep grass on it all fall, without the daily soccer practices. And you don't want artificial turf in a soccer stadium. They're using it every day, I'm in Shrank a lot.

Getting EA Sport's NCAA08 ready to go this year, and was curious who you guys think will start at center, Bardo, Cvet, or Zeke?

I was thinking (yeah!!! That's twice this week!!!) that another part of the perception of Akron by sports fans in Cleveland, is that Akron is seen as a small city in the pro sports world. Minor league. But in the college sports world, it's a different story. Akron's home town is bigger than all Big Ten school's home towns except tOSU and Minnesota, and in a virtual tie with Wisconsin. Problem is, in this area sports fans have far more exposure to the pro sports, always hearing about market size and all that. That's the perception Akron has to get past.In Cincinnati, IMO those fans are more familiar with college sports. And the city itself is considered "major league" with the NFL and MLB. They don't have to fight that perception, just being named "Cincinnati" screams "big league".I think I'm done ranting today...

Our attendance the year (2005) we won the conference was lower than it has been since 2000. In 2006 it was only 300 more than it was in 2004.On one hand I agree with you. NEOhio fans broke league records with a contending Arena football team. But Akron, Cant State, and all the rest of the non-OSU schools have a stigma attached. And a big part of that IMO is they can't accept (can't stand) that Akron would have one up on them. IF the Zips were in that position.I'm in the forums every day, and listening to the radio, I know how they think. I'm not a geography major, but the last I checked, the Nati is not in NEOhio. RIght, and Wal Mart can't keep Mount U merchandise on the shelves, right? Where the heck do you get that???The top half of the MAC ranks with the lower half of the BCS conferences. Were you watching the scoreboard earlier this year? One win and two other games within 4 points against B10 teams the same day we were laying it to Carlton Jackson and his friends. The MAC is rated 12th overall thanks to the bottom half being bottom feeders in the NCAA this year (present company included). Don't just take my word for it. Check out the ratings, and compare the top 3-4 MAC teams with the other conferences. Maybe that's why the MAC sends at least three teams to bowl games.

On a nationwide scale, and in Idaho, I agree with you.But in NEOhio, where you're engrained (sp?) from birth to be a tOSU fan, because it's "Ohio's team", because it's "What we do", it's a different culture. You even mention another Ohio school to a board full of honks and you get annihilated and called stupid. This is the culture I'm referring to.tOSU could go 2-10 and charge $300 a seat and still draw 80,000 every week. Ak could run the table, blow the crap out of OSU and WIsconsin and two other BCS teams, and you bring them up and 99% of the state will say "Arkon? Seriously dude? They'll never be anybody." "Get that crap out of here, you got lucky. We were looking PAST you to a real opponent."And they won't show up of you paid them to (unless you showed the tOSU game on the screen). That's IMHO what Akron is up against in gaining respect. This generation, who's been burned by the Browns for 20 years, and go 150 miles south to compensate for it, needs to die off before the culture will change.

I agree on the need for a return man. How do you rate Hixon vs. Cribbs?IMO (just MO) is we need a downfield threat to spread out the defense and open the running game. 2 for 17? It might even get us in the end zone against the Bills. But pie in the sky, I doubt the Bills make that trade.
-
I would make that deal. Trade Cribbs and his seemingly one dimensional game and his threats if he doesn't get renegged for a pure reciever who can actually CATCH the ball. And not a bad return guy himself.I don't know if the Giants make that. Throw in Quinn maybe...

That's not going to help. We could beat Big ten teams, get ranked, even make a run for the BCS. Doesn't matter in football, just ask Boise State. Ask Ball State last year. Big time college football is a different culture than any other sport, and only BCS schools matter. In basketball a mid-major who's hot takes on all kinds of excitement. "Is Gonzaga this year's Cinderella"? "I've got Xavier in my Final Four". And if you ever want to get some OSU honks off of you about the Zips, ask them how big Sienna is. DOH.In football, if we don't get playoffs or a BCS conference invite, it's going to take a couple generations of beating BCS schools to become part of the culture. And it has to be the RIGHT BCS conference. Just ask Cincinnati.Personally I prefer a MAC game over watching a top Big Ten team run up 70 on a bottom feeder. Especially knowing full well they don't do that to good MAC teams. I just can't get into 63-7 and "YEAH!!!! WE JUST SCORED ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN!!!!!! O!!! H!!!!" "WOOO WOOOO WOOOOOOO". Crimony.Just opinions.

ROFL!!!Could we expect anything more from that school?Maybe they're going to count the squirrel statues on their football attendance and stay in Div I-A.

It might be easier to get city money for a 8-12,000 seater too. I don't know if the city is really all that interested in financing a new gym for the U. It needs to be something that'll bring in a lot of other events as well. But why all the "retail space" in the rest of the block? One of the biggest problems with Canal park is parking somewhere in the same zip code. A nice parking deck or two would be used year round by the arena goers and the ballpark goers. Even the Lock 3 goers.

You're looking at minor league hockey and arena football at least. There's been a couple tries at minor league basketball in Akron but no real facility.Monster Trucks. Arenacross. Circus. Not the big name $50.00 ticket stuff, but still sells tickets. Then there's the concerts. Conferences. Religious retreats.Look at the Canton Civic Center and the Covelli Centre schedules, and ramp it up a bit if you have more seats. Bigger concerts. Maybe even an NCAA Regional. It's really a tough question. You don't want to go small and wind up with another JAR. You don't want to go Richfield Coliseum and lose the "intimacy". Here's my question for you guys. How cheezy are the curtains used by CSU to close off a big chunk of the Wolstein, or the ones used by the Lake Erie Monsters to close off the upper deck that they can't sell? Not a big deal? Or just plain cheese? That may be the answer to having a close loud college basketball crowd and bringing in the U2's.

Just so the floor area is big enough for hockey.

Where do you guys play?

Best comment I have seen in a long long time.

I shouldn't have gone there and I apologize.I'm the type who can laugh at himself as much as anyone else.I joke about Italians all the time, despite my ancestory. That doesn't make me a dagophobic. Just someone who doesn't always think of how the other guy will take it.

Newest HUGE Verbal - Anthony Schrock
Spin replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
Think about it a minute. It's public record he verbally committed for the past three months. I was suprised you guys didn't know. The tOSU offer (or reasons for deciding against NW and BGSU) couldn't be brought up until the verbal commit. Just In Case. If things fell through at Akron, do you want to be the guy who ruined his NW deal because you said "He didn't go to Northwester because Randy Walker is a douchebag"? Living in the same town, with a son on the team, I don't. -
You can bet Broad Jumping isn't one of the sports.I better stop before the PC police (or the tasteless unfunny joke police) gets irritated.
-
Just one of several reasons we should be careful in bringing up stuff about recruits before they're signed sealed and delivered. I've been around forums long enough to know some people just want to argue about every detail they don't already know, open-mouth-and-insert-foot because they DON'T have all the facts, or start a pissing match because we're reluctant to bring them up in the first place.Wow this kid would look good lined up with Zeke...

Look, I had info from a different perspective. And despite the news being out for three months, there are still people here who obviously don't know the first thing about what went on.Next time YOU answer everyone's questions, since you obviously know everything there is to know. And nobody else closer to the situation could have any insight. If you want to jump on someone for bringing up three month old news, start with everybody who MISSED it for three months. Wow, you guys are on top of things. -
