Akron vs Michigan Part Duece
UAZip0510 replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
fine...ill edit it ...i just thought it was real funny...i hate OSwho... their fans are #$##@$#$$#$#@@$...i thought everyone could use it as a laugh...guess not...whatever...i didn;t know where to post this...and by the way, this is the first time i posted something of OSwho on here... I'll edit this post and the other if it hurts you that much.... Anyone else see the irony in this guy calling them OSWho, but then bringing them up in a thread that has nothing to do with them...? -
OK, so what's the score? Anyone? 3-3, currently in OT

I would beg to disagree with you. Anthony Ponikvar, the Zips back up goal keeper, writes a blog for gozips.com. In one of his blog posts he wrote, Clearly, wearing other schools gear around campus does have an effect on the players. If you go to UA you should show a little pride in your school. It's not really to hard to ask. Please cite specific evidence of this. Isn't that what I did when I quoted Poni?? What more can you ask for? Give me a basketball player, since we're discussing basketball. Judging by this guy's knowledge of the name of the leader of the Rowdies (how many other athletes would know that?) and that he's having dreams about him, I'm guessing they are friends. I want a non-biased opinion. I guarantee you that 95% of athletes on campus know who the president of the Rowdies is. And this knowledge comes from someone who is good friends with a few athletes (current and former) at UA. I know a few people as well, and I can guarantee you that it's more 95% that DON'T know.

but expecting them to stop wearing OSwho crap to Akron games/events, is perfectly reasonable. +1. When this happens, the Rowdies should ridicule the guilty person with chants to the point of utter humiliation. Perhaps that would curtail it from happening again. Yeah, because then they'd want to come to another game for sure... Who cares what they wear? They are a PAYING customer who, on that night, made the decision to go to an Akron Zips game over other forms of entertainment. If they have a good game experience, they'll probably come back. If they're ridiculed for wearing a shirt of a school that isn't a rival, isn't in our conference, and never plays us because some of our fans have an inferiority complex with Ohio State, they will probably say screw it and go to the movies next time. When we start selling out games, you can start being concerned with what fans wear. If it's not graphic or vulgar, who cares? Good God...it's no surprise our fan base (especially student fan base) has trouble growing with short-sighted, ignorant attitudes like this. Our fan base has trouble growing because of the short-sightedness of allowing people to think they can get away with wearing the colors of a school we actively compete against for recruits and TV time. How can you be taken seriously when nobody cares that half the fans are wearing the gear of another team and not the one they're watching? Complacency kills. +1. Not caring sets us up to always be second best. I can just imagine what might be said to someone wearing Akron gear to an OSU event. When I lived in C-bus I wore my Akron gear all over OSU campus and to sports events. Never got heckled. Ever. Quite the contrary, I've always been treated with respect. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I attending Akron vs. Ohio State in football in Columbus a few years back and wore Akron gear. I didn't get heckled at all...a few OSU fans even approached me before and after the game to say we had a good program and that they'll be cheering for us the rest of the way. Again, THANK YOU!

I guess my line of thinking was to come up with ideas here and then pass along a link to this thread to the AD.

At what other school would this be noticed? Nearly every school in the country. Are you an Ohio State fan or something? Seriously, not trying to direct hate at you at all, i'm just confused with how you can honestly think at a college sporting event it's alright to have another (especially a rival) team's logo on you. Akron needs to build it's own identity, if someone wont come to something because they are a bigger OSU fan then who cares? I'd rather build something great and have a true fan base that isn't a bunch of front running sheep. Yes, I am an Ohio State fan. I didn't grow up in Akron, or near any other university. My parents were Buckeyes fans, so doing what a lot of little kids do, I followed my parents and became a Buckeyes fan. I remember starting to watch them when I was 5 years old, so by the time I got accepted to The University of Akron I had been a Bucks fan for 13 years. I graduated from Akron and continue to attend UA for my Master's Degree. Over the past 10 years, I've grown to love Akron Zips athletics quite a bit, especially the basketball program. I've been to countless games, I've traveled out of state to see them, and have successfully turned my parents and wife into Zips fans as well. The Zips are far and away my #1 collegiate sports program. With that being said, my love for UA sports doesn't mean I'm going to just stop following Ohio State as my #2. I continue to cheer for them in every game that isn't against Akron...and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I never wear OSU stuff to Akron games, but I also don't care if other people do. It doesn't affect our recruits, it doesn't affect our players, and we are not rivals (playing them in soccer doesn't make us rivals..with that line of thinking Milliken is our rival too). A few other things...I have seen people wear other teams' gear in other places numerous times - I've seen just about every MLB team's stuff at Progressive Field (when that team isn't playing), same goes for the Q and Browns Stadium. It happens a lot more than you think. One more thing...any non-athlete who selects a college based on their sports teams is going to that school for all the wrong reasons. no where in this did you say anything about you or your parents attending OSU. So you are a bandwaggon fan, you have no other reason to root for them except for the fact that they are good. You have ZERO connection to the school! Alright dude lol...I guess I should have done more research on collegiate programs when I was five years old. I give up...you keep hating Ohio State and thinking they have some kind of big connection to our program. I just hope there aren't enough fans like you that will push potential new Zips fans away because your OSU inferiority complex can't stand that they might like that school's athletic teams as well.

We've discussed this in a few different threads but I figured we could throw all of our ideas in to one...who knows, maybe someone from the athletic department will notice. A few of my ideas to get things going: - Have a game "host"...a student did a great job in this role two years ago, but then they went away from it. We have a ton of charismatic, entertaining young people going to this university...find one who can lead games/contests, read promos/information, and get the crowd going when needed. - Zips Trivia - Pretty simple...ask a Zips trivia question, and if the person gets it right they get a prize. - Zips "Magic Moments" - Have a spot where pictures and/or video from great past moments in Zips history are shown...show off our tradition. - Student Athlete Spotlight - Focus on one of our players and tell us what they're like off the court...Major, interests, etc. Let the crowd get to know these guys. - Player Questions - Give the players a trivia question, make them do a specific impression, have them sing or dance...the Cavaliers of the last 7 years (and even today) were/are popular not just because they were good, but because you could tell they were having fun. Smiles and infectious. - Zips in the Community - Our players do great things in the community...SHOW IT! - Better Introduction - The current one doesn't pump up the crowd or the players very much - Promotions - If the Akron Aeros and Lake County Captains can do this successfully, so can the Zips. Dollar hot dog night was a good start (although a limit per purchase is needed next time). Free t-shirts is always a winner (they used to do this...I have about 5 "Zips Zone" shirts). A bobblehead night would be cool too. - Post-Game Free Throws for Kids - I'm sure kids would love this...and if the kids have a good time, the parents will probably bring them back.

I have always felt that there are too many people attending Akron sporting events that should not be allowed to attend. Something must be done about this problem before it goes any further. You are brilliant. I'm going to try once more to get some points across... Attendance - Akron was 6th in the conference last year. For this program to grow, more people need to go to games. Publicly ridiculing people who wear OSU gear (or anything else you may not like) to a game will not increase attendance. The irony is that growing the fan base is essential to reaching the goal you (and I) want to reach - Akron being on the same level as Ohio State as far as basketball programs go. If you're going to alienate fans, get used to 2,800 at the JAR every night, which hurts the program going forward. Recruiting vs. OSU - We very rarely compete with Ohio State for recruits, unless I missed Jared Sullinger's visit to campus. Take a look at OSU's recruiting targets for the next three years (http://ohiostate.scout.com/a.z?s=145&p=9&cfg=bb&c=4&yr=2010). ZERO of them have Akron listed as a school of interest. Aside from a rare case, we just don't go after the same players at this point in time. Competing with OSU - Different conferences...never play each other in the regular season...the only time we'd see them is the NCAA Tournament. Aside from a very rare occurrence, we don't and won't directly compete with OSU on the court. Look, I'm a die-hard UA sports fan, but anyone who thinks our program is on the same level as theirs right now is delusional. That's not to say we can't get to that point. But for that to happen, increasing attendance and expanding the fan base is a must. Simply put, to get this program to the next level, we need more fans...and if you're pushing them away because you can't get over them waring an OSU shirt to a game, you're hurting the program. Let them have a good time at the game and enjoy our wonderful basketball team in action, and I won't just guarantee that they'll come back, I'll also guarantee that they'll eventually trade in their scarlet and gray shirt for a blue and gold one. The fan base will grow, which helps the program grow, which helps Akron eventually become a major college basketball program. Or you can be petty and childish, ridicule these people, push them away, and we can keep the status quo. Up to you Zips fans... It's common sense....You are oing to an AKRON game...find something blue or gold even if u don't have anything with "Akron" or "Zips" or anything like that on it...It's like wearing a different shirt of a high school to ur own high school....it's common sense... Why does it matter? If they're at the game, paying money to the program/university, cheering for the Zips, who cares????? If they're supporting our school/program by being there and cheering for us, that's all that should matter.

However, I am not going to perpetuate the argument because it really is political in that neither of us will ever be proven correct. I would appreciate an apology for being called ignorant earlier. I am far from it. Let's not make this personal. I think we are both above that. I apologize if I offended you, that was meant for another poster who will go unnamed...it's just VERY frustrating to me to see the school/program I love held back and pushing away potential additions to our fan base just because a few people don't like Ohio State.

They are the original state school. I'd root for the Bongcats over the OSU NOTC's any day as well. That doesn't mean they represent Ohio...good God, the OSU inferiority complex is annoying. No school represents Ohio. Just like UA does not represent Akron. They are both schools! not professional sports teams. Imagine you went to Hoban for high school and every day you had to listen to classmates talk about how awesome St. V's is and how much better they are. See how stupid it is to be sitting in a class at The University of Akron and have to listen to idiots run their mouth about OSU. If those students had been following St. V since they were little kids, I would totally understand it. That's what you OSU-haters don't get - these people have been OSU fans since they were little. Expecting them to stop cheering for them all the sudden isn't realistic (or fair), and ripping on them for it isn't going to make them want to join you as a die-hard Akron fan. Now back to the original discussion...

The point is to FORCE the students to sit in one area. How many students are scattered throughout the GA section that could be packed together? How many of those students don't cheer because of the oppressive atmosphere created by the old folks who yell at them to sit down and stop being so noisy? I'm going to sound like a prick here, but I'm going to be honest...a lot of students don't want to be associated with the AK-Rowdies. Many choose to sit up top, and it's not because they don't like the view from the current student seats. Then they shouldn't pay the ten bucks. As soon as they do that, and they get the t-shirt, they are associated with the Rowdies...there are about 2,000 students in organization...about 85-90% of them pay the 10 bucks just to get the t-shirt...this problem has been going on for a while...I see students at Akron events talking about Ohio State, and Auburn, and many more like we don't have an athletic department and acting like we're just some community college...I see so many OSU memorabilia around and other colleges' memorabilia on campus, and it makes me I told some UA students that I hope OSU loses to Michigan and they're like...."why? they represent ohio? u HAVE to like OSU?" I said back to them..."Actually, OU is the representative university of ohio since Ohio is not "Ohio STATE"...the state is just "ohio" I feel like I keep repeating my self in conversations to hear... 1) I'll play devil's advocate: if there are 2,000 "Rowdies" and barely any show up, it might be time to look in the mirror to see what's wrong. 2) What does our basketball team have anything to do with Ohio State? 3) Bashing people for caring about OSU isn't going to grow our fan base. 4) OU represents Ohio? Did you really just say that?

Great post. Very real problem. We have to compete with the Cavs, so, while an NBA game is oftentimes more akin to a Harlem Globetrotters game than real basketball, the environment is certainly entertaining as-all-get-out from tip-off to final horn. You can tell our Athletics Department puts about 5-minutes of work into the gameday experience planning. I like all of your ideas, and I know it most likely took you 30-seconds to list your ideas off the top of your head. Sadly, like I recently posted in reply to another thought, it is painfully clear that posters on ZN.O put much more time, passion and thought into solving these problems than our paid UA Athletics Staff do. Great post as well. It is disappointing when I legitimately wonder if one of us could do a better job...

Who are these people that are buying out both sides of the lower level reserved? There is never anyone in their seats, i find it hard to believe that the entire bottom area is sold out. Create two sections for students behind the visitor bench, leave the rest and everybody wins. Zachthezip hit the nail on the head with the reasons why the behind the basket seats are terrible as well. I'm just being realistic and giving you what the AD's perspective would probably be. When you have trouble filling in a smaller section of student seats, you generally aren't thinking about increasing the number of student seats you have to fill.
-
Moving the students in to a lower level section won't happen anytime soon. It's a great idea in theory, but why would UA's Athletic Department clear out an entire section of UA Alumni who show up to games, pay for their seats, and make handsome donations to the university and/or athletics for a student body that continually no-shows non-Can't games? If the students can't fill the smaller sections behind the hoop, why would they give them a full section? The biggest problem Akron has is the "Gameday Experience". While they obviously don't have the money or resources that the Cavaliers do, the Zips could learn A LOT about keeping your fans entertained. The first step is having a "Gameday Host", a student or GA who bounces around the arena in various forms of entertainment, including but not limited to: - Zips Trivia - pick a random fan, ask them a UA-related question, give them a prize - Promotions - Instead of just putting it on the big screen, have the host tell the crowd about it - Pumps the crowd up coming out of timeouts (Fans need to be told when to stand and cheer) "Great Moments in Zips History" would be sweet...a random highlight from a memorable Zips moment. I also like what the Cavaliers and Indians do, when they ask a question and have a few players answer it. Something like, "What was your most embarrassing moment?" Or if you prefer humor, have them listen to a TV show theme song and guess what it is. Seriously, how many times can we do the "shoot a layup, free throw, then three pointer" contest? When you have a boring game going on (and let's be honest, UA-CSU was boring for most of the game), you need these creative, entertaining things to keep the crowd interested and into the game. GET CREATIVE!
-
This actually happened? Ouch... Yep...I was disgusted.
-
I saw this one coming as soon as the AK-Rowdies starting chanting that the fans sucked. A few points: 1) If you're going to call out the lower level fans, you first have to look at yourself as a group. The crowd was quiet throughout the game, including the Rowdies. The number of chants were limited. Sure, they stood the whole game...but for the most part you were just talking some lame smack to the CSU players and the referees. Watch a game of a team with great student support - the chants are continual throughout the game, not just sprinkled through here and there. Once you do that, feel free to call everyone else out. 2) When you're chanting "terrorist" at players who appear to have Muslim-descent, I'm not going to join you in anything. That was disgusting and embarrassing to UA. I wish I could say this was the first time the Rowdies embarrassed UA. You could also get more creative than the tired-and-cliched "referee is blind" jokes. 3) The lower level fans are certainly too quiet, but at least they are coming to the games. Where were all the AK-Rowdies? When are you guys going to show up for a game other than Can't or the football home opener? (And by show up, I mean more than 30-40 of you.

Zips Cannot Be Accused of "Hot-dogging It"?
